This is an antique itomaki from 1930s, wrapped in 90s bulk weight yarn from Japan. The colour is haji-nezumi-iro. There is approx 5oz of yarn on this 6"x6"x4" bobbin! Collection of Vintage Cotton Reels

I have quiet a few boxes of vintage cotton reels and I thought it would be nice to display some of them. I went to a large flea market in Malvern hoping to find something, but alas, I didn’t. I saw a printers tray and tried a reel in one but it got stuck! I got it out but decided it wasn’t the best display method.

Anyway, this is what I found in The Range.

So, it needed to look vintage.....so.......

I took off the gold bulldog clips, copied a dressmaking pattern and printed off some vintage cotton adverts and glued them in. I then scrumpled up an old pattern piece and glued that in with an image of the end of a Silk reel.

And then......

I fixed it to the wall and filled it with a small part of my collection. What do you think?

PS. My sewing buddy and friend Elaine Harrison came home from her holidays with a Vintage Cotton Reel with a label on that reads “Specially Prepared for Singer”. I looked through my boxes of vintage cotton reels and there isn’t one - so guess what I am on the lookout for :)
