Week 1: Introduction to Software Design and Engineering
January 13-17, 2025
This week marked the start of our Software Design and Engineering course. Our first session was on Monday, where our instructor introduced the course, outlining expectations and objectives for the semester. Afterward, we were divided into teams, and I chose to collaborate with my former classmates. Our first task was to brainstorm project ideas that leverage technology to solve real-world problems while also having business potential.
Exploring Project Ideas
One of our initial ideas was an Order Queueing Web App for internet cafes. We recognized a common issue—gamers often need to pause their game to place food orders, which can be disruptive for them and inefficient for the staff. Our proposed solution was a web app that allows customers to browse the menu and place orders directly from their gaming stations, with real-time notifications sent to the cashier to ensure a seamless experience.
We also considered a Job Hunting Website, but we soon realized that its broad scope would be difficult to manage within our timeframe. After further discussion, we pivoted to a more practical option: a Smart Inventory Management System for Small Businesses. This system would enable businesses to monitor inventory in real time, receive alerts for low stock, generate sales analytics, and automate reports—effectively addressing common challenges like overstocking, shortages, and inefficient tracking.

To better understand user needs, we conducted interviews with potential users. We visited Virtual Grounds, an internet cafe, to observe how customers and staff handled food orders. Additionally, we stopped by Minute Burger, a burger shop, to learn about inventory management challenges. These interviews provided us with valuable insights and helped refine our proposed solutions.
During class, we presented both project ideas. After discussing their feasibility and impact, we officially decided to move forward with the Smart Inventory Management System as our final project. It stood out as a more practical and scalable solution, with a clear market need and strong alignment with our course objectives.
With the first week behind us, we’re eager to dive into the planning and development phase. Excited for what’s next!

Thess vs Sisyphean Tasks
I pulled two hours of overtime, and yet the overall number of items in the queue has not gone down that much. There are a few reasons for this.
They generated a lot of typing today just in general
They continued to generate a lot of typing until 6:30 in the godsdamned evening
New Girl managed to sit on five cases that were dictated on Friday and dumped them back into the queue when she left dot on 4pm (because gods forbid she do overtime)
I got all of The Annoyances again because I'm the only person in the office who takes the typing cases in chronological order, and The Annoyances always take longer
So overall, I am in a great deal of pain but still don't feel like I've been particularly productive. I mean, I know I have, because that's 136 cases total I typed up, including all of The Annoyances, but ... when you came in and the queue was at 302 and you shut down for the day after working two hours of overtime and the queue's at 287 ... the whole thing feels Sisyphean as fuck.
I'm going to have to pull overtime all this week. I'm probably going to have to work Saturday. Do we not hire temps when we're horrifically understaffed anymore? I don't know if I can take a week of this being entirely on me. Then again, apparently it was entirely on Goblin last week because Temp's apparently been off sick for awhile now, Milady ... I have no idea what's going on there but "being away indefinitely" seems pretty bad, and so all she had was Other Part-Timer and New Girl. So I don't grudge Goblin her week off - everyone is entitled to their annual leave. I'm just pissed right the hell off at the higher-ups who are happy to let us be massively understaffed for two weeks or more and have the only solution be, "Let's overwork the one who's actually in this week!" I should probably mention that it's not nice to overwork your disabled staffer when she's on reduced hours specifically because of that disability, but honestly, I don't think anyone in the office space we occupy (real or virtual) has any choice. It's up to Head Honcho and those above him when we book a temp. And apparently budgetary considerations mean that it's better to pay overtime than book a temp. Of course, their budgetary considerations don't take into account how much productivity will plummet if I have to go off long-term sick again, but that would assume they see me as a human being.
And of course, that massive temperature drop is torture right now. So that's making life fun.
