Aegon was the son Viserys always wanted, the son he slaughtered one woman and raped another for, the son he neglected his daughter for. And yet he did not love him.
Helaena was the dragon dreamer Viserys had always hoped to be, the holder of the Valyrian magic he so revered. And yet he did not love her.
Aemond was the lover of dragons, the eager student of history, the kindred spirit Viserys was never able to find in court. And yet he did not love him.
I will rage forever at how much Viserys should have loved these kids. He should have loved them so fucking much. Every single one of them embodied one of his deepest hopes and dreams. And yet he spent the rest of his miserable life punishing them for his own goddamn decision to bring them into this world.

I’ve seen a lot of people talking about how the half of Viserys’s face that’s rotting facing the greens and the half that’s fine facing the blacks is symbolizing their badness and goodness but I’d argue differently. The rotting side faces the greens because they are the ones that deal with Viserys at his worst. Alicent is raped by him. Aemond is mutilated and denied justices. They are the ones caring for him as he rots away and they see the worst of him. The blacks get his best side. Rhaenyra gets a loving permissive father. Luceros and Jacaerys don’t get punished for what they do. He protects them against rumors of bastardry. They visit him when they want his help but have not been there for his sickness.
The two sides of Viserys’s face are about the two sides of himself and which each cohort sees.

Aemond Targaryen x Blind! Reader Pt.2.
Summary: The ways that Aemond tries to help the reader become more independent since her family kind of thinks she's useless and needs help to do everything.
Warnings: More Allusions to Neglectful Parentage, soft Aemond is his own warning (more so out of shock).
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 3.5 / Part 4 / Part 4.5 / Part 5
Tumblr media
This is based more or less soon after they meet but the mannerisms (what he does for the reader) stay more or less the same into their older years, closer to 1x08. So, he may not seem as cold or intense mainly because this is more of how he is seen in 1x06 and 1x07 due to his age.
Aemond wasn't an open person, he was seen mostly in the training grounds or with yourself in the gardens.
Lots of people saw him on a day-to-day basis but never really spoke or knew anything personal about him.
Paired with his looks it was much more common to hear the rumours about him and how he acts with his family. Some, mostly residents outside of Kings Landing believed that he held little love for his relatives but those within the castle knew much better.
He was constantly speaking to his mother about the court and what he may do to help ease the burden. Arguing with Aegon about how he treated women and sank in his wine trying to knock some sense into his older brother before he got himself killed. Defending Helaena from comments about her odd visions and sayings. He was by no means a cruel person towards his family.
When you became his friend and someone he genuinely cared for you came into his circle of protection. Said protection also meant a helping hand whenever you needed it.
Your parents were adamant on you having company of a knight at all times. They would lead you where you wanted to go and wait for you to be finished. Most times it felt as though you were a burden from how they would essentially grip your arm and drag you around.
You were not allowed to attend lessons that all ladies from high standing houses were meant to part take in. It left you feeling like a disappointment at best and while you never openly said it, anyone who saw the relationship between yourself, and your family could see it.
Your sisters often teased you for not attending lessons and would trip you slightly as you walked past. In truth, they did mean this in a light manner, but it certainly did not help you with how you felt.
Your brothers were similar, they didn't trip you as much, but they enjoyed jesting about your condition far more and in a more hurtful way.
You wanted to do those things, painting, stitching pictures onto thin cloths, gossiping with ladies of the court. But alas, you could not.
Deemed too different, too incomplete. It infuriated you, a complete contrast to your regular composure.
Naturally when Aemond heard of your wishes he set off doing what he could to help silently.
-- Becoming friends with Helaena.
When he introduces you to Helaena, your joint interest in plants and critters (more so for Helaena on the latter) meant that you'd become close to one another almost immediately. He was glad to see that you'd made friends with another person in the castle as he scarcely saw you in conversation with others outside of the dinner room and your own family.
Just as he'd predicted, Helaena had practically begged their mother so you could accompany her to her lessons. Ones that you weren't allowed to attend at your home away from the Red Keep.
Not only had he given you the opportunity to become friends with another girl (as most turned away after finding you were blind) but he'd also managed to get you into the lessons you so desperately wanted to attend since childhood in the space of a few days, without you ever realising he'd planned it from the start.
Ever the cunning prince.
Helaena would now join the two of you in the gardens when she was free, utterly delighted by the fact you did not fear bugs and arachnids.
You were told that they were ugly, scary things but you'd never been able to differentiate whether something was ugly or cute for obvious reasons.
Perhaps only centipedes were the exception, the feeling of hundreds of tiny legs running up your arm at a fast past was unnerving, but Aemond was always quick to remove the critters if you seemed to dislike them.
He too had been subjected to the same treatment (holding Helaena's bugs which she named ever so carefully) except he didn't have the pleasure of complete blindness to hide the bugs from him.
Then again all he had to do was close his good eye.
-- Walking through the Red Keep:
Another time when you visited the Red Keep, a few moons after your initial visit. You'd told Aemond how you felt about walking through the halls.
You wished to have the opportunity to not feel so useless and to walk on your own.
A few days later you were gifted a cane by the same prince you'd befriended.
Your parents had never allowed for you to have one because they thought that it was very unladylike to use one to move around. When you proposed that they could simply have one craft that looked fit for a lady of your standing they'd adamantly refused. They'd said that it would take too long to craft, be too expensive and that you would 'never use it'.
You knew that it was not the case. They just didn't want to spend money of you who they thought was a lost cause when it came to betrothals and weddings.
Aemond had done exactly what they refused to do for you despite only knowing you at the time for around five moons. He knew that you were a good person when you comforted him in the gardens, and he too felt what it was like to be unimportant in the eyes of a parent.
His father that is, Aegon often joked about Aemond being Mother's favourite but Aemond was more than smart enough to realise why. It was only because he was actively making an effort to hold the family together. In his mother's eyes, she needed Aemond to keep Aegon focused so that they could stand against Rhaenyra.
When he'd first gifted it, you spent 15 minutes feeling around the staff and all of its intricacies. You could feel a multitude of jewels, or were they crystals? Aemond was more than happy to tell you about each one.
It was a slim thing which made it far lighter and more appropriate for someone of your standing. Everything was in the colours of your house, including the jewels. It had light carvings of your house sigil as well.
An item fit for a princess, apparently Helaena had also given him ideas about what to be crafted.
You'd given the two of them a strong hug of gratitude in the privacy of Helaena's chambers.
Aemond would stand back a few feet and let you orientate the halls by yourself, something you'd never done before anywhere. It was a bit nerve-racking, and you called out the occasional 'Aemond?' just to make sure he was still there and hadn't left you fully to your own devices.
He always called back 'I'm here.'
He would warn you that you were coming up to a staircase but would otherwise let you try to move around objects by yourself unless you asked for a bit of assistance.
Eventually you began to memorise the halls of the Red Keep all by yourself (somewhat).
You would still walk into the occasional wall when someone distracted Aemond from you as they walked past, but he would always apologise and ask if you were okay. You only ever chuckled it off as your own clumsiness.
Laughing together about how you had a cane now yet still couldn't hold it in front of you.
When you needed to get somewhere quicker you would hold out your hands in his general direction and he would place his elbow between the two so that he could lead you.
He was much gentler and more understanding, you'd come to realise quickly.
--Some random bits:
He would often sit on your right during the lessons that you took with Halaena (she sat on your left). When you wanted to switch string, he would whisper what colour you were holding, and you would ask if it would match the picture you were trying to create (often using one of Helaena's previous pieces as a touch template)
He would give his honest opinion but remind you that it was ultimately your decision, not all great pieces of art came from a mix of similar colours. So, in the end you would end up using them regardless of what he'd said.
He would honestly explain what he was saying when he looked at your own stitching. Even if it was completely off but he would again tell you that you were trying your best so you would only end up improving.
He would always arrive you early to your family dinners in one of the rooms in the Red Keep and takes you to a free seat on the table to make sure that all your cutlery was there before leaving once some servants came in to keep you company before going to the main dinner hall that the royal family ate in.
While the ladies of the court where not exactly pleasant with you, the servants were more so since you were one of the few people in the Red Keep that were genuinely kind to them and thanked them for their service.
Once again, I would love to take requests for HOTD characters and on anything you'd like to see between this Aemond x Blind! Reader. Like please, I really wanna continue this thread XD.
If you wanna get tagged in this particular fanfiction for Aemond just comment it and I'll add you to a list. I forgot to mention that on the first one.

Something interesting I noticed while rewatching this scene: Aemond looks directly at Viserys when he lies to defend Alicent, but Aegon can barely look at Viserys - he does briefly, for one line (”Everyone knows.”) before looking away again.
Aemond has just gotten definitive proof that his dad does not give one singular shit about him, and his attitude is “well, fuck you too.”
Meanwhile, Aegon is just completely resigned to it. He already knows his dad doesn’t give a shit about him, and he doesn’t want to be the one stirring this pot of shit, but he's not selling out his mom either.

i'm thinking about the dinner scene after aemond's "strong boys" toast and lil tussle with jace when alicent reaches for him, trying to corral him, and he shrugs her off without even looking at her. it's the closest to violence or anger we ever see directed from aemond towards alicent. this is the boy who is parentified, who alicent relies on for comfort almost in viserys's stead, so even a gesture as small as this from him means a lot. and i think it shows this interesting divide and almost resentment between alicent and her children.
alicent's spent her entire life preparing her children for what she views as an inevitable war. rhaenyra has been her children's boogeyman, and while some of them (aegon) resisted this idea at first driftwood really cemented it as fact in their minds.
while alicent has a foundation of old friendship that can give rise to sympathy or hope, her children do not. so when alicent reaches out to rhaenyra during this scene, when she berates her children for the animosity she instilled in him, her children act almost betrayed and double down further. even aemond, who is the most dutiful and careful with alicent.

the horrifying what happened to aemma in episode one about this is that it is only when the woman is ACTUALLY dying or are already dead that c-sections are performed. that told me they do not care of about the historical telling of the story AT ALL. so i just wanna break down the situation and why i dont think that scene in episode one was necessary in the way it was.
now we have a precedence of this shown in the form of queen dowager alyssa velaryon in f&b. the first birth of her marriage to rogar had not been good, she was already weakened by that and her second pregnancy in the marriage was worse, to the point she was dying.
the maester informs that alyssa was already dying and that the only solace they could give is dreamwine. if she had consented or never woke up, we dont really know - but either way the baby, jocelyn, would actually die if they hesitate longer and that if nothing is done, alyssa could take the baby with her as well.
so jaehaerys and alyssane are told and its jaehaerys that tells rogar - that alyssa is dying and the babe could be as well, but they would have to cut her open. rogar was horrified but its something that had to be decided. yet it was a hard choice to make, because no matter the outcome, there would be pain and death - brutal one at that.
but because alyssa was already dying, it was offered as an option and hence it aligns heavily with the medieval standards. in fact, we can find this in a book by historian renate blumenfeld-kosinski called not of woman born where she talks about this.
there's a passage where she mentions saint thomas aquinas and the conundrum of conducting a c-section as soon as possible to annoint the child in holy baptism, to 'save its soul' from damnation — which details a conversation but saint thomas wrote against that, in defense of the mother and explicitly details that he rejects killing the wives.
if the mother is already dead but child is still alive, that's where you move to cut open because the child would die just the same as the mother. thomas rejects the idea that you should kill the mother in order to baptize the child. it is so interesting that the church is against abortion, but one of its outspoken individuals has this sort of perspective.
in fact, there is a passage on three instruction manuals for women's health and medicine called trotula (the little work of trotula) in medieval italy in the 12th century. the midwives who study these texts are encouraged to take care the mothers first. this was at a time where people are HIGHLY religious and would have caused such a social taboo. it was a shock wave to the population seeing these radical ideas for the first time.
the text on c-section on the trotula goes as follows: "whan the woman is feble and the chyld may noght comyn out, then it is better that the chylde be slayne than the moder of the child also dye." - which means it was highly encouraged that they ONLY CUT when the woman is already dying or is dead. this text tries to tells that the mother and child need tp be looked on but women need to be cared for as much as the child. if there is any other way, it should be taken. only in the event of no more choices should there be cutting.
in fact the woman who was behind ideas in trotula — trotula of salerno was a radicalist in her time. she believes both women AND men can have defects. specifically how men's semen can be medically unfit to conceive a child. and that WOMEN should not be suffering at child bed, discussing the use of opiates from herb plants to help with pain and just like saint thomas, she believes that women are not meant to suffer or die from childbirth and that women should not have to make up for the sins committed by even in eden.
in fact, c-sections were also heavily regulated by local authorty. jakob nufer in 1580s for example was a veterinarian who found that his wife was having such a hard time with childbirth that he was so concern and begged to be allowed by local authorities to perform a c-section on his wife because he feared she would die and he succeeded, which his wife surviving AND that child living a long life according to the records.
historians have said that this would not happen just without any reasonable cause to do forced c-sections on their wives for the fact that their wives are also belonged in other royal houses and strong noble families. the people in charge needed these alliances and connections in order to keep the peace going. foul play cannot be a must, the childbed is risk enough for these alliances already. marriages and childbed tied the peace together. alas, the best childbed care is a MUST.
aemma's death would have been fine as a regular death in childbirth or even a similar situation as alyssa's, which would have at least dignified her death. unless it was the natural progression of childbed and or foul play, aemma arryn would have no need to die like that on her childbed. this was not a good way for aemma to die.
it was just insulting to the book material, historical record and aemma herself. not to mention to viserys i. losing his son was tragic enough but having him decide prematurely without her consent, without her actually nearing death or without discussing it in depth with the maester and or not insisting any other way was so off to me. he would have been making a bunch of questions, this was his wife - she was tied to house arryn and she was a high ranking woman. he would not HAVE had her cut open like that when she was not dead yet or actually on her death bed.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON ↳ Princess Rhaenyra serving as a cupbearer for her father, King Viserys I
At eight, the princess was placed into service as a cupbearer… but for her own father, the king. At table, at tourney, and at court, King Viserys thereafter was seldom seen without his daughter by his side.
