ここ数年は大袈裟な表現をするならば いつも今年が最後のつもりでスタートラインに並んでいる。 大袈裟じゃないな・・・来年も同じ気持ちで同じように準備をしてスタートラインに立てるか・・・年を追うごとに自信は無くなってきている。

去年の修善寺での全日本選手権。 ここに書くことが何もなかった・・・あのオリンピックで使用された難コースで雨・・・成す術なく自ら前に進むことを諦めたあの日から、もう終わりにするのか？まだ頑張りたいのか？まだ頑張れるのか？そんな事をダラダラと考えながら1か月ほどを過ごして思った事。それは自転車が好きでMTBが好きでXCOが好きだって事。「楽しいっ」て思う気持ちが20年以上前から全く変わっていないという事。そして何よりこのまま終わりたくないっていう気持ちが沸々と強く湧き上がって来たって事。

終わりは近い。それは間違いなくもうすぐそこにあると思っている。気持ちは変わらずとも体の衰えは確実にジワジワと進んでいるし昔のように感覚的で瞬発的な動きは殆ど出来なくなってきたし。今はただ経験の中から導き出した答えに沿って破綻しないように体を動かしているだけで自分自身にサプライズはほとんど見つけられないし予想範囲内でのパフォーマンスしか出せなくなっているから。 周りから見ればお世辞でも「ベテランらしい丁寧な走り」みたいな事を言って貰えたりもするけれど正直そんなのどうでも良くて本当は体が言うことを聞いてくれるならば、なりふり構わず後先考えずガムシャラにペダルを踏みつけるような走りをしたいんだ。

富士見パノラマは標高が高いから金曜日の朝から会場に入り少しでも高地順応を図る。ライセンスコントロールも済ませ試走の出来ないこの日のうちにバイクの最終チェックと工具類やピット（フィード）に持ち込む諸々を準備しておく。予報では土日2日間とも雨なので天気の良い金曜日のうちに出来る準備は全て終わらせておく。土曜日の試走と日曜日のレース。その2日間は出来る限り走る事だけに集中出来るように。

レース本番はそれまで積み重ねてきたトレーニングやその日に向けて準備してきた全ての答え合わせ。結果（リザルト）は良ければ良いほど気分は良いけどそれよりも大事なのはその瞬間まで何をどれだけ積み上げてきたか？頑張ってきたか？だと思ってる。僕はプロじゃないからね。限られた時間の中でどれだけ真剣にこの競技と向き合ってきたか？その過程を大事にしているしレースの楽しみの半分くらいがそれであると言っても過言じゃないかな。

試走ではいつもの冨士見パノラマとはいえ丁寧に確認しながら最速ラインを探す。と同時に入ってはいけないラインもチェック。前後にライダーがいる場合とそうじゃない場合、木々のない開けたセクションの風向き、気温や湿度、雨が酷くなったら等々、様々なシュミレーションをしながらコース全体を把握していく。各セクションの瞬間瞬間の捌き方の一つ一つの中で1秒でも0.5秒でもタイムを削れる可能性を探していく。パワフルに踏み抜けばいい。と同時に最大限の効率も求める。レースだけで考えれば結果が全てだから。

エリートまで昇格して何年経ったかな？もうそんな事も忘れてしまったな。当たり前だけど30代になってからエリートまで辿り着いたわけだし表彰台に近いところで走れるはずもないし、ずっとずっと悔しい思いしかしていない。いつの年だったか日本で10番のシリーズランキングまで登り詰めたのが今思えばピークだったけどそこからは右肩下がりで低空飛行。それでもここで走る理由は自分の中にあって。その理由とか思いとか情熱みたいな心の中にある塊が熱いうちは走りつづけたいって思ってる。

バイクをHTからFSに変更した今シーズン。開幕戦の菖蒲谷ではスタート直後に前方で起きた落車に巻き込まれ完全ストップで最後尾付近からの再スタートになるも走り自体は悪くなく好感触。次戦の朽木ではバイクセッティングが決まらずズルズルと後退。全てを見直して臨んだUCI八幡浜では完走こそ逃したもののUCIポイントも獲得。雨でマッドコンディションになった一里野も全日本に向けてのトレーニングレースという位置づけで疲労を溜めた状態で走ったけど大崩れすることなく走れた。成長はしていないと思うけど精度はレース毎に高まってきていたと思う。

細かいことを気にしすぎる性格なのでバイクのセッティングもそうだしレース当日のルーティンも誰かに乱されるのは極端にストレスだしレース会場では出来れば誰とも口もききたくない。そんなのちょっと変だと思うけど全てはレースに最大限集中したいから僕はそれでいいと思ってる。

レースは最終周回に入れず-1lap。あと少しほんの少し足りなかった。悔しい思いもあったけど持てる力の全てをぶつけた結果なので納得はしている。来年また同じ気持ちで同じように準備をしてこの日を迎える事が出来るのか？簡単にまた来年～って感じじゃないんだよな。だけどあの特別で濃密なあの時間を僕の中から手放せるの？と自問自答すれば・・・そんなの考えられないんだけど。でも自分がイメージする自分と現実の自分の乖離が許容できる範囲を超えてしまった時にはきっぱり降りようと思う。今はまだその時じゃないと思ってるんだけどね。

"Kohana" was an Orca raised in captivity at SeaWorld and then "sold" to Loro Parque in Spain to perform for humans. Orca aren't meant to be kept in concrete cages, or concrete jungles - they're meant to be free out in the open. Kohana died Sept 14, 22. I thought it fitting to name my Spanish @orbea Orca M20iLTDin her memory. The sticker on the top tube is actually Kohana - she was known for playing games with her trainers with leaves. I guess when you're trapped, anything can be a toy. Like an Orca, this bike is an absolute weapon! Crazy fast yet still compliant. Kohana cuts through the air and flies up hills unlike any other bike.
