there was a familiar person in view, a figure whose right of presence she instantly and passionately studied. it was very rare for ruka to encounter other people from the industry. even her own labelmates, she would only see during evaluations and that hasn't been much of a thing since their recent debut. moments like these always made her freeze, but only long enough before she starts to feel an itch to say something because of that chary feeling of awkwardness. she sure wished the charisma could work in such cases, but her confidence seemed to tie into her craft, the stage giving rise to a persona she could only hope to be a fraction of in the mundanities of everyday life; an odd thing to wish for, perhaps, but it's a thought that was enough to get the pad of her fingers rubbing against her scalp.
valuing the personal security of the other—which must have been significant considering the substantial popularity him and his group has garnered over the years, she slid closer very carefully across the marble bench she could feel the pressure on her calves. "what's someone like you doing in a public place like this?" ruka, at this, fixed her eyes, partially covered by her hat, a minute on the ground, back and forth her cup of baekmidang ice cream, and at most momentarily taking a gander in case she had mistakenly approached a complete stranger—or worse, a fan. that would cause quite the chaos in a mall of such scale. "alone?" making the distinction gave way for a chuckle to slip out of her. there was a hint of impishness in her words, guessing there was some sort of secret rendezvous involved in such an arrangement.

face blanched, uncreased eyes started and wild mouth gaped; this was the immediate response whenever ruka found herself in the presence of jennie. she was intimidating, in a good way. the last time ruka had seen her label senior, she still had orange locks flowing down her shoulders. she faltered but a second. "sunb—" at this, she petered out of her own words to correct herself. "unnie!" she beamed and broke into a long look, filling the air with silence until she had noticed the unease marked by her actions. "i saw your, um, coco photoshoot." she followed to clear the mood, but halting a little as a single thought crept into her mind. she wasn't sure whether to bring it up but her mouth had decided for her before she could even think it over. "you should sign me with oa as a solo, too. so we could collab and, you know. we'd make a fire track, i think." there was a lingering timidness in her tone that she was trying hard to play off. she didn't know whether the other would detect the half-meant joke but part of ruka needed jennie to keep the proposition in mind, for the uncertain future. "but really, congratulations! it's such a big step. really inspiring, honestly."

you're never really asleep... and you're never really awake. ( for ruka! )
"can't a girl have hobbies? i'm just god's eepiest soldier. it can't be helped." an obvious satirical jest, but spoken with a serious, tender grace that's made it harder to detect the humor within her words. she had clearly just gotten up, wakefulness still partial and lulling her reactions. "honestly, i'm probably still growing.'' she pauses to think of what she was saying, processing as if to realize just how silly that sounded considering the life stage she's currently in. "but really, it's hard to get any sleep lately." it's hard to pinpoint what was causing the sleep deprivation, resulting in the daytime fatigue that minghao has noticed. fingers press onto the sides of her head, giving it a massage done in a circular motion. "i even feel a headache coming right now. i'm dehydrated, i think."

longing for family was a persistent instinct for ruka. it was still hard and conversations with her mother were usually disposed to be brief. much like that day's. ruka blamed no one in particular for this nor did she feel aggrieved for the path that she had chosen for herself causing this 'existential' dilemma. not in a million years. she has once said that she would dance until she died. the same is true within the present. she's just lucky to be making money off it as an aside. though her time away from home paled in comparison to sana, the feeling of rootlessness, nostalgia, and alienation didn't wound much less. despite her matnae status in her own group, she didn't exactly feel plush with the idea of sharing her woes with the younger members. in fact, she doesn't know who to turn to in general.
"what's it like?" ruka, conscientious in how to put it into words, mused out loud, albeit with some context missing, as they pressed feet along the most happening streets of sinsa-dong. it was both a passing thought and an inquiry meant for the other but it was said so casually it almost felt like it wasn't meant to be heard. they continued to trod throughout the length of the pavement that bore the load of several dessert places without ruka elaborating on her cliffhanger of a question—attention span be damned. "there!" she stopped in her tracks upon spotting a familiar store, finger neat in pointing at the bakery with the sign that spelled 'yammy cake'.
dark red locks flew past her shoulders at the opening of the glass door. "the desserts here are soooo good. i got a cake here before. pharita dropped the box and i kid you not, it honestly was still perfectly intact. i totally vouch for this place." she gushed up until the two of them reached the counter. eyes scanned from one end to the other, finding every new thing on the display fascinating enough to send forth a string of gleeful gasps. "wow, last time i was here the menu was completely different." the two spent an unreasonable amount of time ordering drinks and desserts as if either of them could really finish all of it in one sitting, but the rush and excitement of seeing beautifully decorated desserts transfixed them into a compulsive expenditure.
"sorry, i meant to ask, what's it like to be away from family for this long? as in, not living with them and everything." finally, the long-awaited question had been concluded and it happened with ruka mindlessly dipping her fork onto multiple slices of cakes, trying each from the variety that they had purchased.
just behind the day's companion, a staff was approaching with a surprise. unbeknownst to sana, ruka had called in prior to their visit to order a customized cake intended for the older's upcoming birthday. her lips pressed down against each other, the soft palate dropping to allow air to pass through her nose, producing the mm sound. eyes swelled with anticipation and her hands meet together for a clap—going once, twice, then paving the way for a gentle applause accompanied by a muted happy birthday song. she at least wanted to make sure there were no unnecessary attention drawn to them lest they be crowded with people taking pictures. lucky for them, it wasn't that much of a busy day and extra steps to be discreet wasn't exactly demanded.
the song wrapped up and the pair was greeted with gel letterings spelling out "happy bday sana" on a generously burnished, deeply golden surface of the cake, the sides of it patchy from the absence of a crust. she wanted to specifically get a basque cheesecake because from trying it in the past, she recognized the taste. it was this distinct creme caramel flavor, the aerated, velvety custard-like texture reminiscent of the cottony, soufflé-style cheesecake back home that she figured sana might find comfort in just like herself. "try it, try it. no butter. no flour. and it still looks perfect. how cool is that? i bet it tastes amazing."

there had always been a gap between her emotional maturity compared to her age in years. being surrounded by girls much younger—yet more ahead-of-life than she is—their energy rubbing off on her, and knowing peers in the same stage of life have gone on to attend college or even finish and are able to support their families, she had always felt like it's only her time that has stopped. so much of her life has been centered around dance that she can't imagine any other path anyhow. it's why she's persevered as it is despite her complicated thoughts on the matter of 'success' and how it's measured in society. but what are you meant to do when your time is put on hold?
in ways, this conviction is or was a point of commonality with momo, not including the passion for dance. whether it was appropriate of her to seek her insight, being momo's junior by a whopping eight years, was another story entirely. both coming from japan at that, politeness was not just a form of accommodation that depended on the character of a person. in their culture, though not necessarily a legal bid that was mandatory for everyone to follow, it is a tacit agreement that's been collectively abided by. it should explain her unusual quietness and the stiff awkwardness, wary of seeming nonchalant or forthright or anything less than courteous. that could be off-putting.
"well..." ruka voiced quietly, breaking the still silence in the air. fingers trace the rim of her cup, the affogato in it untouched, while her eyes fixed its gaze down toward the drink. the gelato had completely vanished, likely filling the bottom curve of the container. growing into an adult officially, she had been trying to enjoy coffees in earnest and slowly weaning off the daily morning routine of drinking milk. but she's not quite there yet. "do you like what you got?" ruka inquired, looking up slightly to point at the drink with her eyes, in a deliberate attempt to quell the unease trapping them into this somber mood. "maybe i should try the same one next time. i'm an adult now, you know. i need to get my tastebuds more used to bitter flavors."

monster without me, just a baby.
Tumblr media
kawai ruka (河井瑠花) aka ruka (루카) of newly debuted yg entertainment group babymonster and former founding member of shibu3 project's blue class. she's solidified a reputation as the best dancer within her group, specializing in hip-hop, having danced since she was 6. before her arrival to south korea, she was a talent under platinum production in shibuya and has been hired for small projects and music video cameos. she joined yg in 2018 and quickly trained to become a rapper while still possessing skills in the vocal department. she ranked 2nd on the final line-up, right under jung ahyeon. she'd been applauded for her range and ability to reach high octaves with ease. she also conspicuously holds the most "swagger" known of yg artists among her members. to contrast this, despite her 5+ year-age gap with the younger members, she's been dubbed the pseudo-maknae due to her playful nature off-stage. ultimately, she's someone with a lot of unique charms which has been constantly pointed out by mentors and peers alike. ruka's biggest dream is simply to become a top artist, whether through yg and babymonster or elsewhere.
