Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 16 Review - Memories Will One Day Disappear

This marks the end of the first cour! Next week starts the second cour complete with a new opening. I honestly can’t wait to see what this new cour is about. Despite my excitement, this episode was also good!

I really love the little life lesson in aging. Old man Voll has lived up to a dwarf’s life expectancy and has gone senile. He cannot remember or recall many things, but he still does remember who Frieren is in a way. While Frieren is still young from an elf’s standard, there will be a day where she will wither and become old like him. Seeing him in this state is what Frieren could become in the future; it’s a lesson to appreciate life and the people you meet along the way. I really like the message!

Voll is quite the character. He’s a lot different from Eisen in terms of dwarves. While decrepit, he still has strong intuition as he was able to catch Stark off-guard and have him on the ground. Because of that, Frieren suggested he go train with him to hone his skills. I’m not sure when the results will be shown, but it was nice seeing Stark getting a power-up of sorts. Unlike Eisen, Voll had married a human woman and loved her a lot to the point that he protects the village she called home. Despite his devotion and love, he gradually lost memory of her; he still protects the village despite forgetting why he does so. It’s bittersweet in a way; his brain may have forgotten but not his heart.

I also liked how the flashback with Himmel showed that he was ready to accept the outcome of being forgotten, but didn’t worry too much because Frieren and Eisen will carry on his memories into the future. Frieren still remembers him fondly to this day because of this. I think it’s sweet that after Himmel’s death, the world gradually had forgotten Himmel, but not Frieren. She still remembers him clearly.

Not only that, the overall theme of memories in this episode merges with Sein’s desire to find his childhood friend Warrior Gorilla. It’s a weird name, but unique and a memorable one; he named himself that so he can be remembered as a great hero. It turns out that he was inspired by a statue of forgotten heroes long before Himmel. One of them turned out to be Kraft; it was nice knowing that Kraft used to be a hero in his long life. The fact that the other person with him has been forgotten fits the theme. Eventually, Himmel will be forgotten through the passage of time and there will be a day where new heroes will emerge and history would repeat itself. I kind of like that; it shows a very bittersweet aspect of history in a way. While history is preserved through books, museums and memorabilia, the memories from back then had been forgotten via the passage of time.

But it also makes me wonder, if Gorilla hasn’t returned in so long, has he forgotten about Sein? That could also be a big worry for Sein. What if Gorilla had forgotten about him or his reason of becoming a hero? It sucks that Sein reuniting with Gorilla would be shown off-screen due to Frieren’s party needing to go to Äußerst to take the First-Class Mage Exam while Sein needs to go to a town further from there. Who knows if Gorilla would actually be there in the end? I can sense that Sein will be leaving next episode; it was fun while it lasted. I do hope they will reunite with Sein in the future; it’d be cool to see Gorilla join Frieren’s party as the fifth ranger of sorts.

I’m anticipating the second cour of the show. The cast list for the new characters have been revealed and I’m super excited! I see some familiar names with one of the biggest names being Kisho Taniyama; if you’re not familiar with him, he voiced Jean from Attack on Titan, Himuro from Kuroko’s Basketball and is the vocalist for the band GRANRODEO, who sang a lot of anime openings—notably most of the Kuroko’s Basketball openings.
