We will never not appreciate how colorful Mexico is. From our trips around Baja California Sur to road trippin’ on the Yucatan, there are always new places to enjoy. The colorful towns of the Yucatan are exceptionally cool and fun, and each is so different! OMG, road trip theme: colorful towns and street art. Okay, here you go!

Your complete Yucatan road trip itinerary (with bonus plans)

Starting in Cancun, since that’s where you fly into usually, grab your rental car and plan your stops.  The plan I’ve made here is good for a four to six day road trip focusing on towns and relaxation, but it could easily be stretched out to ten days if you wanted. And know that this plan doesn’t include every cenote or Mayan ruins site, but you can add those in too.

First stop: Puerto Morelos

South of Cancun about forty minutes, this colorful little town is at the start of the Ruta de Cenotes: the Cenotes Road.  While it isn’t a resort town, per se, it’s very much centered around tourism and the beach. The town square is just off the beach and it’s surrounded by small hotels and open air restaurants. There is some beautiful street art, plenty of colorful buildings, and a small malecon for strolling

This town is great for a day trip if you’re in the mood to relax and people watch, or if you are looking for a quiet town to escape to for a few days.  There are tourists here, but not many. Puerto Morelos feels like the town locals probably visit when they’re having their own beach days…

Note: near the beach the prices of EVERYTHING are crazy.  It’s not that I’m an American that wants to haggle or something, but I was looking for an inexpensive beach towel and the only options were very cheap small towels for $27 or $36 USD. And there was no compromise. The prices and mood here are very different from more touristy areas.

Ideas for activities around Puerto Morelos include boat tours to get out on the water, chillin’ on the beach, driving the Ruta de Cenotes (love Cenotes Siete Bocas!), or using this as a home base for visits to Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

Chillin’ in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen has been one of my favorite spots in Mexico for a few years. Yes, it’s totally built up now and there are tourists and vacationers EVERYWHERE, but it’s still awesome. The town itself is colorful and fun with the feel of a small city.  The beach is easily accessible from nearly everywhere, the residents are welcoming, and the food is stellar. Can you go wrong mixing Mexican food and super fresh seafood? No.

Staying at Club Yebo Hotel – Playa del Carmen

An ideal spot for overnighting in Playa del Carmen, the Club Yebo Hotel was super cool. Nestled into one of the more quiet streets just off the main strip in Playa del Carmen, it was exactly what I’d hoped. The courtyard was kind of a jungle with huge trees and elevated walkways, the pool area was beautiful and calm, and my room was simple with plenty of space and amenities.

At night, despite being right between the beach and the party scene of Playa del Carmen, it was very quiet. In the morning, I was able to grab coffee and breakfast just outside the hotel at the little cafe. It was kind of perfect.

Who knew Playa del Carmen was such a crazy place? Until this last trip I’d only visited Playa in the daytime and now I know where Mexico goes to party. There were more people out in Playa after dark than I’ve seen anywhere else, including the Castro of San Francisco. Shoulder to shoulder people in some spots. There were countless restaurants with outdoor seating, lots of bars, there were break dancers, street performers and so much more. The spectacle of Playa del Carmen at night is something to experience. And street tacos too.

Akumal: colorful nature

This is one of my favorite places in Mexico. I’ve been here before (check out my article) and it was incredible. This most recent visit was just as incredible as before.

The town site of Akumal is built around the beach, as this is the prime destination on the Yucatan for spotting and swimming with sea turtles. Little pockets of restaurants and small hotels are all within a two minute walk to the playa. If you’re into larger resorts, there are a few options here in Akumal, but even those are mellow in comparison to what you’ll find in Cancun.

When it comes to experiencing wildlife in Akumal, that’s where I start to ramble. On this last trip, I saw seven sea turtles swimming, eating sea grass on the floor, and resting. One even swam over to investigate me!  I’ve seen stingrays, loads of tropical fish, and just enjoyed laying in the sand. It’s perfect.

Note:  there are times that Turtle Cove at Akumal is closed due to too many tourists or a lot of turtles laying in the area. Getting to swim with the turtles isn’t a guarantee, but if you do, you need to exercise caution and respect.

Also in Akumal is Cenote Yal Ku. At the end of the beach road you’ll find a small parking area and an attendant in a palapa style structure. You pay your entry fee ($15 USD as of Feb 2017) and make your way to the most unique cenote. Hugely open and full of mangroves, Cenote Yal Ku is unlike any other I’ve visited. The fish population was off the charts and the direct connection to the Caribbean made for an interesting flow of water as I snorkeled. So fun and colorful!

Valladolid:  colorful Mexico

This is my new favorite city in Mexico. Valladolid was so colorful and full of amazing sights! I hate to play to the millennial vibe, but it’s seriously the most Instagramable place I’ve ever visited. Between the towering church in El Centro to the colorful buildings lining the narrow streets, to the plethora of old VW beetles, it’s a photographer’s dream.

Valladolid still feels rather undiscovered when you consider the larger Yucatan towns like Cancun or Playa. Unlike the main tourist areas, you do actually need to speak Spanish in Valladolid. Primarily, the town is a residential one and also home to the local Universidad de Valladolid. If I wanted to stay someplace totally chill and beautiful that the whole family would enjoy, Valladolid would be it. Yes, not close to any beaches, but there’s a cenote right in the middle of town, so…

Yes! There is an enormous cenote directly in downtown Valladolid. Cenote Xin Ha is one of the largest cenotes on the Yucatan and is, hands down, one of the coolest natural wonders I’ve ever seen. There’s a fee for entry of course, but find me a cenote that doesn’t cost something. Once you’re scaling the steps down into the grand cavern, you have the option of doing the full loop or just jumping in off any given cliff. I did the loop and checked out the bat caves and stalactites, but eventually found a small cliff to jump off of that didn’t make me terrified. After relaxing for a bit, I hiked back out and continued to explore the town. Lovely time in Valladolid!

Tip: the city is very walkable and safe, but you need to be sure you’re parking legally, as Valladolid doesn’t have clearly marked parking areas/signs. I had to chat with the police upon returning to my car, and they were awesome and hilarious about my parking job, but it could’ve gone a different path.

Bonus city: Merida on the Western Yucatan

If you have time, spend a day or two in Merida. We haven’t visited yet, but everybody says it’s beautiful and its Spanish colonial heritage makes for some interesting historic sites.  This is also where you can stay if you plan on visiting Rio Lagartos or Los Colorados for flamingo viewing. Just an idea…

Next colorful Yucatan stop: Isla Holbox

I returned my car to Alamo Rent a Car at the Cancun airport and headed to the international arrivals terminal to meet a friend. We found our driver with Transfer Holbox and buckled up.  This was a mini road trip itself.

A couple of hours in the shuttle and a few Coronas later we made it to Chiquila, a tiny town on the water where we would be catching the ferry to Isla Holbox. It was a beautiful Caribbean night so we sat on the upper deck and enjoyed the ride while a local busted out his amp and microphone and sang for tips.  It was all too fun to be true, but it was.

Note: there are different boats that do the ferry service, and depending on the model of boat and the roughness of the waters, sitting outside may not be an option due to the huge waves/spray.

Exploring Isla Holbox

This cool little island is off the northern tip of the Yucatan and it’s still fairly chill for being a Caribbean destination. It’s a strange place, I’ll be honest. And FYI, it’s said “Hole-bosh.”

You arrive by boat and that in itself is kind of an adventure. Once you’re on the island, the only transportation is via golf cart taxis or bikes that you rent. Actually, you could also rent your own golf cart if you really wanted. There isn’t pavement except for some areas of the town with paved sidewalks.

The town of Holbox is very similar to other Mexican towns in that it’s pretty colorful and is 60% restaurants. What makes it different (in addition to the golf carts) is that it’s full of street art and hammocks. Yeah, both in the water and in the town you can use or rent hammocks to chill out randomly.

We ate at several different restaurants in town, but my favorite was El Champlin. This small restaurant in the heart of downtown, just off the main square, has no menu. Each day the chef sees what’s fresh and available and makes four dishes. When we went, the options were stewed shrimps, bone-in tenderloin, lobster and cream sauce, and grouper (fish) with poblano peppers. I had the grouper and it was remarkable. Delicious with a really subtle heat.

Overall, the food of Isla Holbox really seemed to be Mexican inspired but big-city trendy. It was not what I was expecting.

Isla Holbox has plenty of hotels to choose from (we stayed at Villa Flamingos) and pricing is still fairly inexpensive for being the Caribbean. It seemed that most of the visitors to the island were either from Canada or Europe. There weren’t a ton of Americans in town.

Tip: if you can be on Isla Holbox for Carnival, do it! It’s not like Carnival in Venice or Mardi Gras in Mobile, but it’s fun and the whole town is in on the party.

Hyundai Tucson is expected to debut in India by July 2020. Hyundai Tucson will get a rich interior and will be powered by a BS6-compliant 2.0-liter powerplant. New features include a connected car technology with a Krell powered sound system. The diesel unit will get an 8-speed automatic transmission instead of a 6-speed AT in the pre-facelift model. Petrol engine power is 152PS and the output of the diesel is 185PS.

Hyundai Tucson’s 2.0-liter diesel engine is expected to have a mild-hybrid setup. Based on the pre-GST taxes, the ex-showroom prices are already revised and gone down.

The starting price of Hyundai Tucson is 18.17 Lakhs, and 20.09 Lakhs as opposed to pre-GST. There will be a reduction of 1.92 Lakhs as well. SUV’s top variant stands at around 2.5 Lakhs cheaper with a cost of around 23.98 Lakhs. Prices are revised and revamped across variants.

It will continue to rival the Honda CR-V, VW Tiguan, MG Hector, and Jeep Compass when launched. The upcoming Haval F7 will also go up against the facelifted Tucson. Hyundai Tucson is a rival of CR-v, MG Hector, VW Tiguan when it will be launched. The starting price of Tucson starts at Rs. 18.13 Lakhs for these three variants. Also, insurances are marginally higher as the tax rates are revised as of now and stands at 18%.

On Bein’ at the Be-in

I work 40 hours a week but am not stratifyingly ambitious. I dress modestly, sometimes wear a tie, but keep also a beard. I am married, but not to a Caucasian. I drive a 1965 car but of course it’s a VW. I admire the eloquent silence of Buddha’s flower sermon as well as the several-hours speeches of Fidel.

I see that source of unity which is a revelation of inner harmony and not anyone’s putdown, but sympathize with “people’s armed struggle.” I steep in Buddha’s cosmic universalism but belong to a socially conservative Buddhist temple.

Not knowing then what tribe I belong to I went to the great BE-IN gathering. I had heard that the hippies and the activists might lovemagically coalesce and bring forth Buddha (the Great Compassion and the Great Wisdom!)

Majestic Moses and Sweet Jesus were seen many times, soft eyes with revolutionary beards. Angels from the very gates of Hell protected the erstwhile wantonly cut electric power and also suffered little lost children to come unto them. (Electric guitars will never make it in the Sierra Maestras, comrades!) No anger, no reproach for the act of non-love (or was it Divine Mischief!); Allen Ginsberg provided a special mantric spell to divert any likely lingering, lurking evil spirits. In this he was aided by inspired percussionists in front, and by much of flutes, bells and tambourines among the communicants.

A little more than an hour before the commencement of the more formal rites, my wife and I camped by the ends of the streamers from the skyward rocket, phallic multicolored submarine, with a couple of friends who rushed in from Davis. Ginsburg invoked Shiva and the lively kind-faced youths behind us worshipped the grass fragrantly. Gary Snyder intoned the sutra in traditional Japanese inflection.

With joy I saw that Suzuki-roshi was on the platform and wished that at least one of my Buddhist Churches of America ministers was there. Upon leaving we did meet at the crowds fringes one of the lay brethren from my particular religious circle; he wondered what WE were doing THERE. He was taking pictures.

A painted face behind us bent to a squat little stone flute it seemed, but it sounded like an ecstatic meadowlark. In the quietness of the sunlight it soared, and amid the humming of all those golden honeybe-ins; in and out of strands of speech and chanting it was always harmonious: the One and the Many. A nobly beautiful couple rose to dance.

Near us a shy, very young looking pair looked with wide, serious eyes and they blessed us by accepting eagerly our food offerings. (Dana is a twoway street). When the Davis-friends split we found our neighbors to be another pair of tall beautifuls, he black, she blonde and rosy, modest mature types. We had some Japanese style fried chicken which they accepted with a special kind of joy to be long remembered. The man especially felt something wonderful had happened.

But that was only one corner. In the spirit of the Five Thousand, the Diggers began to feed the multitude. Some say as many as four times Five Thousand were present and all seemed filled, contented and giving.

A lad unfurled a poster-sized picture of Ho Chi Minh - just a picture, not a thousand-words. We saw there that Ho was beautiful. (“Well, what do you mean by beauty? - happily none bit THAT apple.) “I found this picture of Ho down there on the road.” So now we know where the Ho Chi Minh trail is!

My heroic wife who tho great with child made the pilgrimage, could sit no longer and from closeup-center we had to make for the periphery. So close packed were the merged communicants that to avoid altogether treading on bare toes was almost impossible. But again, no hostility. The age of miracles has not ended! We departed in a shower of flowers, ribbons, balloons and sugarcubes.

My friend Dr. Allen Cohen, the psychologist and devotee of MEHER BABA, the mahaguru who also as avatar raises his voice against psychedelic chemicals, was not there that I could see. But such a large crowd - but Gleason in the - (there I am again!) - Chronicle, noted Baba-signs “LSD IS MORE ILLUSION, GOD IS THE ONLY REALITY.”

There are so many perspectives. The Buddhist says God too is an illusion, the grandest of them all; but tolerable and sometimes useful if it does not become the “opiate of the people.” Did find one Babalad sitting in the dust with a sign, a forlorn non-communicant sight ( as if self-cast out of the “tabernacle of the congregation”).

I don’t remember the Meher Baba quotation but I do remember the credit at the bottom: “MEYER BABA.” (“His name is Meyer?”) Probably some brotherly Jewish Marxist-Leninist made the sign for him, the same kind of fellow who has a left- handed kind of fondness for Hubert Lindsey the Berkeley campus evangelist-our evangelist. “The lion shall lie down with the lamb...”

Most of the Berkeley lefties I know are not doctrinaire in that inhuman, mean, uptight sort of way - sectarian - (yet steeped in doctrine) and they even find Buddhism a worthy subject of eager inquiry. But after the gathering I met a respected lefty who hit me for a few bills of bail fund at the Med. He asked me how I liked the BE-IN and I saw in his eyes that he wasn’t so sure. “Didn’t the activists speak as planned?—Rubin was there,” etc., I asked, explaining my earlyish departure. “Not so you could notice it” was the tone of his answers.

Well, I can still hear Dan Sorkin crowing on KSFO as I drove home from that Great Gathering, about how wonderful he found it while he could stay; he spoke repeatedly of the spirit, the beauty, the gentleness, the Buddha leading them all down to the sunset service on the beach.

Sometimes I think anything might be possible if the sincerely compassionate revolutionary saints would take up some regular consciousness - expanding meditations. The bodhisattva drops IN not OUT. Out is where we were, in the cold.

When’s the next one? Shall Berkeley host? Maybe not only will the Hell’s Angels be in there but also the Baba-boys and later, the Red Guards.

Xiong, a salesman in Chibi, a city near the center of a virus outbreak, is one of millions of people in China who are obeying government orders to work from home as part of the most sweeping anti-disease measures ever imposed.

After breakfast, Xiong leaves the 3-year-old and his 10-month-old brother with their grandparents. The salesman for IQAir, a Swiss maker of household air purifiers that are popular in China’s smog-choked cities, goes into a bedroom to talk to customers and try to find new ones by phone and email.

His son “comes to knock on the door when I am in a meeting, asking for hugs,” Xiong said. “I put myself on mute, open the door and tell him I will be with him later, and he is fine with that.”

Most access to Wuhan, a city of 11 million people where Xiong usually works, was cut off Jan. 23 and some other cities have imposed travel restrictions. Controls imposed on business to try to stem the spread of infection extend nationwide, affecting tens of thousands of companies and hundreds of millions of employees.

The government extended the Lunar New Year holiday to keep factories and offices closed. Cinemas, temples and other tourist sites were shut down to prevent crowds from forming. Group tours were canceled and businesspeople told to put off travel.

As mentioned in my Part 1 post my Dad hooked me on cars early starting with my love for his Plymouth Road Runner. Dad is mostly a GM man, but this one time early Mopar foray of his may have planted the Mopar seed.

Brakes

Upgraded brakes. Front rotors are upgraded to 14.5″ rotors.

My first car, a VW Fox, had smaller wheels that this has brakes at 14″.

Interestingly the transmission plays a great part during braking. The first time I had to reduce speed on a highway the transmission kicked down gears like I would have done when I drove stick. The result is that the reduction in speed was so jarring and I had to let off of the brake to keep the Civic behind me from rear-ending me.

Oddities

To make space for the center console gear the shifter moves to the steering column. This is also where the manual shift switch has moved. But the transmission handles duties so deftly I rarely use it.

Pleasant Surprises

This car is nice. Not that I was expecting it to be awful. Was expecting a rough and tumble car. A more powerful version of the rough around the edges Crown Vic. But this car feels like a more powerful version of our V6 VW Passat. And dare I say better handling. Makes sense since the base Charger architecture was lifted from E Class MBs of years ago as a result of the Daimler marriage long since annulled. The current VW Passat is a softer American built and American market vehicle which may explain it being more softly sprung than the Charger.

Media. The base touchscreen system has been flawless. No Bluetooth, but it proved to be no issue. There is a USB slot where I loaded my music and there is a conveniently located AUX cable between two power ports in the lower dash. Great sounding stereo. More ways to customize locking, locks, lights, wipers, etc. through the touch screen than I have ever seen. In-dash display with great information available.

Wheels. All black hubcaps that are so fetching that I have no plans to replace them.

Comfort. While first researching Dodge Charger my son and I test drove a civilian Charger and found it to be very tight. But surplus vehicles have seats with less padding to accommodate utility belts. Same for the backseat. Combined this also provides more backseat leg room. No center console also makes for better hip room up front. No sunroof so it gave my son proper Afro clearance.

Keyless entry and remote start. Never had it before.

Has cylinder deactivation so fuel economy was rated at 25 MPG highway. That matches the VW Passat that has 100 less HP. Takes medium grade fuel instead of the premium required for the VW so the fuel bill ends up being less under normal use.

Cosmetic condition.

These cars are the cream of the surplus crop.

Exterior:

Very few cosmetic blemishes and most are forgivable. Most are very clean. The very cheapest carry a few dings, but the car I chose was very clean. A bit of touch up paint here and there and that about did it.

Interior:

A bit of shampoo for the front seats.

What about reliability concerns?

Legitimate concern. These surplus cars are packing over 100,000 miles. But they come with a folder stocked with all of the service documents. And there are a few things that helped me get past my concerns:

A Hemi engine alone runs about $6,000 depending on where you look. These cars started around $6,000.

The only repair for this car after a thorough review by the local Dodge dealership was less than $200 of exhaust work to rid the car of a rattle. For a little more I had a missing cargo hook in the trunk replaced.

My folks have been driving it trouble free since. They both took a liking to it so there previously favorite vehicles are often parked.

Purchasing strategy.

Same as you would use anywhere. They do not let you drive the cars, but they will let you start them and open them up. Ran through the usual checklist:

Do all power windows, door locks, mirrors, and other auxiliary equipment work?

Run the engine with no radio to see if there are any errant clicks, squeaks, whines, or ticks.

Get low. Look in wheel wells, at the exhaust, and under the car for any signs of corrosion or leaks.

Test A/C to see if the cold blows cold and the hot blows hot.

Cigarette lighter check for cell phone power.

Open the hood and trunk to gauge the state of things. Any fluid leaks or rotted plastics or rubber up front. Feel around the trunk for any signs of water leaks.

Check the tires for how much life is left.

Look through the provided service records to see if big service items have been addressed.

Gun it. Purely for the sake of science of course.

There is no haggling by the way. Price is as posted. Reasonable price for a well-maintained vehicle in great condition with well-sorted factory upgrades.

Choosing our Hemi.

As mentioned earlier the least expensive of the offerings was available for $6,450. The most expensive of the RWD 2014 and earlier Chargers was just shy of $10,000.

Year 2015 and beyond are AWD. Read that Dodge offered AWD as an option for 2014 and so many cars were ordered that they made AWD standard from 2015 on. My upgrades.

Did not need anything. Changed one thing.

As with the Crown Vic removing the police gear in the center console left a big gap, but unlike the Crown Vic a large metal plate was left that did not allow for a $29 mail order center console.

This took a little more research for a solution. My theory was that someone out there created a solution and wanted my money. And I was right. For $95 I found this cupholder/armrest that was made to be bolted to just this type of metal plate.

Conclusion.

If you are an old land yacht car head that enjoys the rumble of a V8 of the HEMI variety, a smooth ride, ample interior space, but does not want to spend a ton of money I highly recommend that you look for one of these old decommissioned cruisers. If you are fortunate to have one of these surplus facilities near you even better. For less than $9,000 all in I can ride in style in a whimsical vehicle that does not embarrass itself when the odd evasive maneuver is required.

As an added bonus on-ramp merging is a breeze, especially at night.
