With a length of 12.4 metres, a width of 7.2 metres and a height of 6.2 metres, the Hauly could be considered the largest taxi in the world. The vehicle is a former dump truck which, during its active period on the Erzberg, transported 12 million tonnes of rock. This giant weighs 91 tonnes and was capable of loading almost 100 tonnes of rock in its trailer, which is where you are now sitting. It can accommodate 62 visitors and is powered by a 12-cylinder, 895-kW diesel engine and an automatic transmission.

You are probably wondering where the name “Hauly” comes from? Hauly is a nickname derived from the HAULPAK vehicle name. Haulpaks were produced by the Wabco company in Illinois (USA) and used until the early 1990s on the Erzberg.

The Styrian Erzberg is the largest siderite iron ore deposit on earth and the largest and, most importantly, most modern open cast mine in Central Europe. Along with siderite, which is an iron carbonate with the chemical formula FeCO3, the material mined also contains ankerite and dolomite rich in iron. This mixing with minerals containing less iron means that the iron content is only between 22% and 40%, averaging around 33.5%. Carbonates rich in iron were deposited around 400 million years ago (during the so-called Devonian period) and later mineralised with solutions rich in iron. It is believed that over a half a billion tonnes of siderite ore formed here. Geologists estimate that there are still several million tonnes of available reserves of economically viable ore, meaning mining is currently still possible until 2060.
