Walten Files 4 Notes/Messages Transcribed
Anything I couldn't read is in [], with my best guess at what it says or "can't read", if there isn't enough information to make a guess with, or "unsure" if I cannot understand the writing.

Charles Brook: 10.10.1970 Hi! Just got hired officially as the computer supervisor for "Unnamed Bunny Smiles Restaurant" (though I've been coming up with a few names myself) I've known these guys for a while, they're family! I've done some work for them along with Susan for years now, even before CyberFun Tech! Getting to meet the Waltens and the Krankens has been super fun! So excited to get to work! The future is bright. C. B. P. 27:12
Worth noting, P. 27:12 is a proverb from the bible, "The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty."

Mr. Kranken This is Norman. I’m sending you this letter on behalf of our deal between Bunny Smiles and CyberFun Tech and most importantly, the well-being of our Cyberfun staff. We’ve been getting a lot of complaints about a member of our staff going missing who was highly associated with you and your team. Susan Woodings has been missing for a week now and here in CyberFun Tech we are working as hard as we can to try and manage to get in contact with her. Is there perhaps any detail you could hand us to help locate our missing employee? I’m going to be entirely honest with you, Mr. Kranken, and tell you I have a ton of questions and suspicions about whatever is going on with your company. Whatever it is, it’s making both your company and mine look bad to public light so, again, if there’s anything that could help us find Susan, write us back immediately. Thank you. I’ll see you Monday.
A second later, a sentence appears
SUSAN HAS BEEN STRUGGLING TO BREATHE FOR [3?] DAY SHE [can’t read] ANYMOR[E]

my problem with postcanon jade was that it said she was a cis girl before fusing with bec. i took it as the same "true in a transmisogynist way" troll as transmasc roxy
like, truly, i miss transfeminine roxy every day, and my house is fairly glass when it comes to things here considering i'm writing The Butch Lesbian Jane Comic, but like. the way homestuck fans exert ownership over the text of homestuck is fundamentally what the homestuck epilogues and post-canon are about. act 7 is about the dead calliope saying "fuck canon" and making her own, and she does not know how to care for the characters in question. i genuinely believe reconciling these facts, that what homestuck wants to be and what fans want homestuck to be are tangibly, ideologically opposed, is what post-canon is about
"fans read this character as X identity" is fine and good but that's paratext at best, and making demands of a text that has no obligation to respect them at worst. the epilogues are cashing in that desire to not respect them. homestuck has always been shaking off its readers who exert too much ownership, feel too comfortable with it. this goes way back as far as act 5 act 2 - the author commentary describes switching between walkaround sprites and hussnasty mode in such close proximity as a means of saying "if you always get what you expect, you will become complacent and that's no way for a reader to be", the "come in, go away" routine of homestuck is so repetitive now that i'm surprised basically nobody's caught on - homestuck is always doing insane flips to try and shake people off of it.
and now homestuck is doing that with your headcanons. like, this is a thing i see genuinely, all the fucking time in fandom over the past 15 years or so, people hype themselves up on paratexts and pretend the paratext is the source. the worst i ever saw of it was people having full blown self-harm threatening panic attacks because klance was not endgame in voltron legendary defenders. genuinely, i remember this so well - i think there were still two more seasons of the show after that event too, but i didn't watch it.
i only looked on from afar because what i saw of season 1 wasn't especially novel. castiel was never gay, no matter how many times he was caught leaking omegamusk in walmart or whatever, i'm stealing valor with this joke i was never a superwholock omegaverse girlie. there's so many fandoms i'm not a part of, it's unreal.
anyway, my point is people get really invested in their reads on characters and pretend it's real for the same reason a normie's sports team is gonna go the distance this season. and when they don't, they riot. this is literally just sports fandom 101. we may as well be talking about fucking inflategate here. i also don't go to sports. it's basically just homestuck for me these days.
i imagine this is what it's like to run my little pony before bronies came along: the show was negligible in relevance beyond its capacity to show off the new toys to play with. but the difference is that my little pony is about the toys, it's about encouraging that kind of play, it's fundamentally a set of toys they made a show about, as opposed to homestuck, which was always niche art for webcomics weirdos that caught on, quite literally, with the brony audience. i remember the first time i ever saw dave strider was on fucking ponychan, chronologically it would have been mid-act 5 act 2. it was an image of dave ransacking the lohac stock exchange, which is an a5a2 thing, it was before season 2 started, etc etc.
this is one hell of a tangent to say as far as the text of mspaintadventures is concerned, problem sleuth characters have gender signifiers that are more similar in nature to drag and performance of gender roles than any actual sexual dimorphism. homestuck characters are built atop the gender expression of problem sleuth. jade was a 13/16-year old girl, and that's the only information there was. over time, this changed.
this was an explicit change, too - it's in the change to act 6, passing through the fourth wall, that these characters, who fundamentally are game pieces, that homestuck starts to contend with the fact that people are emotionally invested in them as people. people don't like dave or vriska in the same way that people care about problem sleuth or nervous broad, and this comes out in the text. we get a lot of the best stuff in homestuck out of that change, too, like. the retcon only works because of that emotional investment, and i go so hard for the retcon. the retcon is the coolest thing ever.
and with that change, now, in 2024, she is explicitly a 39 (? i think she's 39.) year old woman with a penis. she didn't go from "cis woman" to "trans woman", she went from game piece to human person. there is no "cis jade" to be overwritten. you're assuming a "cis is default" worldview of a team of transgender and/or nonbinary people and thats just like. its not ideal, really

hsrp post format
In the absolute gamble that Homestuck will still exist and be usable in 2031, I've scheduled every post for this project (or saved to drafts when the queue overflowed) so it's ready to go on 4/13, 69 days from now.
Homestuck ran for 2557 days (7 years including 2 leap years), but the comic was only updated on 1161 of those days. On each day with an update, there will be a post detailing the day's pages, numbered according to update days. So, 4/27/24 will be 'Homestuck Day 13' as 4/27/09 was the 13th day with an update, despite being the 15th day of actual time.
These posts will be tagged #homestuck replay and #homestuck. (I will not be using the tag 'upd8' due to actual, present day upd8s of Homestuck: Beyond Canon).
There will be other tags for other posts, like reactions and analysis and fanart, which I'll figure out as I go. No posts on this blog will spoil the comic beyond what's in the most recent upd8 post.
Upd8 posts will be posted at 4:13pm EST (GMT-5) daily, as this is the timezone Homestuck was written and posted from. If there wasn't an update that day, there won't be a post.
--
April 13, 2009 <- Post heading: the date, 15 years ago to the day
Homestuck Day 1 <- Upd8 day of Homestuck, between 1 and 1161
New Pages: 1-16 <- Pages released this day according to the Unofficial Homestuck Collection's story by story page numbering (should also correspond with Homestuck.com; does not correspond with original MSPA page numbers)

% Completion (Time): 0.04 <- Calculated as ([HS Calendar Day]/2557)*100. Does not take pages or updates into account, just how far through the seven year period we are.
Notes: Beginning of Act 1 (The Note Desolation Plays) <- Notes that do not include spoilers for the update, such as beginnings of acts or notes indicating an especially long reading day.

last night I had a dream. Warning, my dreams tend to be a bit… weird and surreal and nonsensical, but not the exciting or abstract kind. A more low-key insanity.
I went to Universal Orlando… again (outside of dreams I had gone a few years back). Specifically the Islands of Adventure park.
There was a Fraggle Rock land, of all things.
The land, while it was SUPPOSED to be Fraggle Rock, was actually kind of a big forest. Outside of the rides, I remember much of the experience being walking through the forest, going into some hollowed out trees, and seeing animatronic Fraggles. All the while, the BGM was Mokey singing really relaxing remixes of various songs such as the Fraggle Rock theme. It was quite a vibe, actually.
The one attraction I went on was an outdoor river ride. It was rather slow and chill, with Mokey once again on BGM. But she sang a different song… “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green”, Kermit the Frog’s signature song (aside Rainbow Connection)!!!
The climax of the ride was this kind of split in the river. If you went left, you would apparently see a scene with Boober Fraggle. I went to the right, meaning instead I saw a scene with a giant walkaround animatronic Junior Gorg, and narrowly escaped his clutches by continuing to ride the river through/beneath his legs. I also think I saw… a road or sidewalk at this portion of the ride? Like, right beside me?
At one point Mokey spoke instead of sang, and I distinctly remember the line “On Muppet Island, anything is possible!” 1) Mokey sounded much different from her show counterpart, having a deeper yet much younger sounding voice (like, within tween or teenage range). 2) Muppet Island was the real standout to me, even in dream, since the land was specifically Fraggle themed. I suspected the land might have started out as “Muppet Island” with Fraggle Rock being a subsection and they forgot to update the attraction’s soundtrack.

Unprompted ranking of gg guys based on how much i like their clothes
1. Krosp
Tumblr media
Have you ever seen a more perfect coat for an emperor cat
2. Martellus
Tumblr media
This is undisputed for me. These clothes are so fucking good. I think I forgot both his lab outfits but forget it these outweigh everything else he's worn regardless of how bad it is. He's like a fratboy trying to audition for a disneyland walkaround.
3. Dimo
Tumblr media
These fuck. Like dude gets his clothes by attacking random guys who might be his size and he makes it WORK
4. Klaus
Tumblr media
You all have to leave me alone on this one. I have a coat collection irl
5. Gil
Tumblr media
Gil's wasp fighting outfit is one of my favorite of all time, as is his lab coat from castle arc that I surprisingly forgot to include even though ITS THE OUTFIT I COSPLAYED. I'm also a huge sucker for overalls. The rest of his clothes though are kiiiinda boring. Nice coats but they tend to run together.
6. Tarvek
Tumblr media
Look, man. I draw tarvek in a lot of awesome shit, in my opinion, but the fact of the matter is he is FAR too conventional. BREAK SOME MORE DAMN RULES. YOU DRESS LIKE GIL IN PURPLE AND RED.
7. Maxim
Tumblr media
I think hed be ranked higher if he had more outfits. Obsessed with the implication that he mugged someone for a princess hat, apparently. I relate so hard. Also, purple is my favorite color
8. Hadrian (the good one)
Tumblr media
Wizard of Oz is a good movie
9. Theo
Tumblr media
He dresses... Interestingly, but the winner is the black outfit he's wearing under that coat. Obsessed with it. Wish i owned it.
10. Van
Tumblr media
VAN YOU LOSER YOU WERE SO CLOSE. YOU COULD HAVE BEEN WAY HIGHER WITH LITERALLY JUST ONE OUTFIT YOU EXCLUSIVELY WEAR AND THEN YOU PULLED OUT SOME HIDEOUS NIGHTGOWN

little known fact about us Australians
We actually prefer the avenger versions of Chuck e cheese characters and we also only have had 2 animatronic pizzerias in the entire span of our country’s known existence, which are: Charlie cheese’s pizza playhouse, and pizza showtime, I’m pretty sure Australians will flock to Chuck e cheese if
The had the animatronics and
used the avenger designs and walkarounds
so if you really want to make money cec, then do that, and you’ll be making millions from the first few months of the first few chuck e cheeses opening then do that

I think since today’s the day, I should get off my chest what I think about Homestuck and the epilogues: the former is good and the latter is like an uncooked steak covered with diahhrea.
To elaborate, Homestuck is a cake that used too much baking soda and cooked in the oven for too short, its the same size as a cake but the outside is too airy and the inside is mushy and liquid batter, disgusting.
But there’s this middle part, between the layers that’s delicious as all hell, it uses grandma’s secret recipe and the chef was running a rush order, it’s a miracle he used the perfect ratio of egg to sugar to flour and milk, you can’t deny most chefs wish they could prepare a cake this good, and when one ingredient is off and it was underbaked, many critics would absolutely drop a solid 9 to a 5/10. It’s still good in my heart.
Now leaving the metaphors, I love this comic to an autistic degree. Its art direction and narration perfectly mix the feel of a strange adventure game published by some studio pushing the boundaries but had no budget so they end up reusing assets from stock images for most of its run, and for the second half abandoned jpgs for minimalist bean shaped heroes.
It has multiple flash animations, interactive walkarounds, and plenty of callbacks and reference to its own story beats and panels, it’s really good and even the secondary characters have a lot of dimension to them! The big issue was the pacing, and by god did Act 5 Act 2 cone out the miracle it did, balancing troll to human conversation perfectly, never abandoning the kids, and leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for the mess the trolls were about to make for themselves.
I even like act 6. Yeah I said it. Caliborn is funny, Calliope is eh, Roxy is the obvious character with the most going for her, Dirk has a good arc about his own struggles, but between him and the alpha kids, not so much. Jake had an arc for him to realize who he can be and his linits and how he should stand up for himself, and Jane was learning to trust her friends while being able to sleuth out manipulation or bad actors. Some of these words are in past tense because Hussie was now ping ponging to the boring 3 years where the kids are separated by dream bubbles and a long yard, almost never interacting with each other’s side of the 3 year journey (minus one DISTACTION by Rose and John hammering Bec’s head in with COOL NEW BREATH POWERS)
The pacing was a whole lot and openbound was a waste of time for 10 characters the fans could play with as dolls, but Act 6 Act 6 united both alpha and beta parties to actually do stuff.
But Hussie was also developing a (STILL UNFINISHED) adventure game(s) for his two new kidsonas that were going to give Alternia more breathing room and two new kidsonas an adventure to expand on the lore of Beta earth Roxy, Jake Harley, and a dead flighty broad.
After delaying when the comic should have ended by one and a half years, Hussie says “fuck it” and drops an awesome flash where everyone fucking dies. I was sad a little bit but remembered the comic had to end with the good guys winning so I just slogged another 500 pages watching a cool concept unfold: alter the timeline to unfuck the doomed timeline and fix the time paradox that would cause Lord English to not exist. Cool yeah?
The problem was after undoing 2000 pages of characterization Hussie needs to redo those 2000 pages and give characters worthwhile new arcs to solve, make everything both hunky dory on our way to the finish line but also start a new problem from railroading the characters into this new chance to win the game, and are clearly still coping or ignoring their other timeline’s struggles.
The best Hussie could do was 750 pages.
Build the new universe, kill the bad guys, save the troll race, finish Dave, Dirk, and Roxy’s character arc’s, we’ll finish the rest in a new timeline, the epilogues stuff. Drop in some vague shit at the last minute like “Ultimate Selves” “Aspect design and destiny” and some lip service to how these aren’t the same kids John knew, the look like them but they’re ever so different.
Then for like 6 months that was it, then the credits explained what happened to them and where they are now, and what’s unfinished.
Bonus updates we see a human cosplay space fish horns Hitler, a troll cosplay an immortal time demon hellbent on wrecking the corpse of every Universe he is aware of, and a carapacian cosplay a teleporting radiant dog demon that killed 3 parents. This was for Halloween.
Jane gets kidnapped by the goons you loved back when the comic only had 4 kids 3 adults a dog, some 4 chess friends, Jack, the midnight crew and the felt, and then she mind controls Jack and says she is going to get political.
Also the woobified side characters Wayward Vagabond and Oeregrine Me dicant are no longer “the deterrent of the original bad guy” and “silly marketable plush character who was once a veteran of the bloodiest massacre in Sburban history” they’re dead.
So what an ending huh, that was overwhelming, also unfinished. That epilogue should really tie in loose ends and end the narrative stakes of a work of fiction to a calm and satisfying pace like a traditional narrative does, boy oh boy can’t wait to expect that from the postmodern work of Homestuck hahahahahahahaha.

All Hallows - County Drakul
At last we come to All Hallows's final themed area (for now). County Drakul is actually the largest part of the park by area, much of it to accommodate the massive Gothic castle and associated ride at the back. The bulk of the space takes the form of an Old European village in a non-specific time period, with design elements spanning from the Middle Ages all the way up through the Victorian era. The streets are cobbled, the buildings mostly half-timber construction, and once off the main walkway the area seems to consist entirely of narrow, winding dead-end alleys. Sharp-eyed guests may notice strings of garlic hanging in the upper-story windows, holy symbols scratched on the shutters, and other evidences that the townsfolk have something to fear at night.
Besides the castle, prominent locations in County Drakul include a small rundown cathedral, a pub, and the town square with its ornate fountain featuring statuary of angels and demons. The area music loop consists of spooky classical pieces, orchestral music from appropriately Gothic horror film scores, and similar.
Tumblr media
Characters
The people of County Drakul are suspicious of outsiders and fearful of the creatures of the night—don't expect to get to know any of them. The only named character of significance is of course The Count himself, who appears in portraits and on posters around the town, and on the Castle Drakul ride in animatronic form, but not as a walkaround character. However, you may encounter some of his courtiers at night. It is unwise to approach them for photos without plenty of witnesses around (and they might not show up in the photos anyway).
Attractions
The Grim Procession: A nightly performance in which black-robed people (monks? specters?) holding candles emerge from the cathedral, slowly march around the town square, take up positions around the fountain, and begin a low chant. They are answered by eerie wails from white-shrouded figures that emerge on the rooftops around the square. The spooky counterpoint continues for a few minutes until the apparent ghosts sink back out of sight, at which point the robed figures march around the square once more and then return to the cathedral. Direct explanations for what just happened are not forthcoming.
2. Danse Macabre: The cathedral is the theatre for this grim but lively show, in which the interior crypts open up and the bones of the dead emerge to dance to the strains of the chapel organ. As the show progresses, the images of the saints—stone statues and stained-glass windows alike—also join in the romp.
3. Into the Catacombs: At the far side of the graveyard attached to the cathedral is a massive mausoleum housing County Drakul's maze attraction: a dismal house of the dead featuring skull-lined passageways, dripping water, shuddering sarcophagi, and other such gruesome sights and sounds.
4. Castle Drakul: The most elaborate ride in the entire park, bar none. It begins as a slow trackless dark ride through the corridors of the castle, but at the halfway point (in the grand ballroom) transitions into a mag-launched roller coaster as guests escape a horde of vampires after inadvertently interrupting their masquerade ball!
5. The Laboratory: A long-form dark ride celebrating the Gothic tradition of mad science. Bubbling beakers, crackling Tesla coils and strange creatures in chains are just some of the things you can expect to see as the ride builds toward its lighting-infused climax!
Shops and Eateries
6. The Wolf's Head: A pub-style restaurant facing onto the town square—low lighting, wood furnishings, and hearty food that doesn't skimp on the garlic.
7. Tomes of Mystery: A hole-in-the-wall bookshop focusing on classic Gothic lit in hardcover, including rare editions. Leather-bound blank journals are also available.
8. La Masquerade: County Drakul's costume shop features archetypes from Gothic literature (and its many film adaptations), elegant period costumes, and religious imagery. Specific examples include: angel, demon/devil, French court, gargoyle, ghost, Grim Reaper, mad scientist, nun, priest, skeleton, steampunk, vampire and Victorian. Individual costume pieces such as masquerade masks, velvet capes, and Goth jewelry are also part of the stock.
9. The Lord's Feast: Situated in a wing of the castle (but not sharing space with any part of the ride), this full table-service restaurant offers a menu of sumptuous food fit for nobility. Reservations for large-group catering can be made in advance.
Other
County Drakul has walkways connecting with both Goblin Woods and Ghoul City.

homestuck.coms search feature is absolute shit. hate it
the ordering of the results just goes off the page number. completely disregards what that page is in. for example, the epilogues almost always show up before actual homestuck
its just not very good with text. but its a text based search engine!! :
- disregards punctuation. "xyz's" will show up when you search '[s]'. [this does not mesh well with the aforementioned sorting thing!! ':/ ] ;
- does not understand html encoding. specially bad with > because > is a pretty common character, you know, ==>, and there are [2, but like its really 1] characters with the handle GT
its just worse than readmspa in everything but loading time :
- walkarounds don't exist. specially weird for, like, alterniabound. it's been mangled into a bunch of images and badly formatted text, they could have used that, no? ;
- they didnt do anything for the text as images. like, lord english is "lrd english" because of the pool ball o. the green sun just doesnt fucking exist
just use readmspa. its what the uhc does too

Raise of the Conductor’s Baton: Pgs. 248-270
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IT’S FUCKING WAYWARD VAGABOND.
HE’S HERE.
oh? what’s that? you call him “The Mayor?”
THE MAYOR
IS THE TITLE OF THE FALSE IMPERSONATOR.
WV is an honest chess man thing, a humble farmer turned revolutionary leader against the tyranny of the kingdoms. he stood for democracy and freedom and fought for these ideals. he was the last man alive in a bloody massacre, left to sulk in survivor’s guilt.
“The Mayor” is a strange childlike creature with no true morals, relenting all of his autonomy so he can be coddled by everyone around him. he let Earth C be ravaged by a bunch of 16 year olds who turned it into a racially divided monarchy. he is a false idol and an insult to the legacy of WV.
anyways Rose Lalonde made a GameFAQ.

the 2 flashes that open Act 2 have some really nice shots, seeing the skies of LOWAS without knowing what’s below is pretty damn menacing. you’d think the Egbert household got banished to the fucking void or something. welcome to purgatory, featuring clowns.
Tumblr media
and then oh FUCK it’s a WALKAROUND BABY.
the walkarounds are so fucking good, I just LOVE registering the dimensions of these fictional locations admiring the random shit placed within them.
weirdly enough, the Act 4 opener is the only other flash to exclusively use this style of walkaround. by that I mean, using the regular sprite mode art style in and letting the player move around in the isometric camera angle. on 1 hand, completely understandable, it would be an utter nightmare to constantly reuse or make brand new traditionally drawn art assets just for some open areas to fuck around in. on the other, literally controlling in a Homestuck environment is fucking cool, the feeling is like no other, this is the John house and I am walking through it.
best part about this has to be witnessing WV’s manner of speaking, it’s so fucking good. he’s eternally yelling in direct mannerisms while not knowing shit about anything.
some highlights:

also very good that he utterly despises clowns because that was the attire of both the monarchs and Jack Noir.
oh also there’s the
Tumblr media
command where you can turn
Tumblr media
and walk through walls.
Tumblr media
Trickster Mode is fun, Trickster Mode is silly, I am not going to talk about the white part, let me have this for a moment.
we should instead talk about how you can enter Problem Sleuth’s office.
Tumblr media
god Problem Sleuth is so fucking good.
Tumblr media
John.
Tumblr media
John is afraid of heights, another character detail that needs to be represented more in fanworks. we need more acrophobia content.
Tumblr media
just look at him, the poor child.
Tumblr media
[scuttles around like a little guy.]
Tumblr media
YOOOOOOO IT’S FEDORAFREAK!!!!
EB: i'm fine i guess. EB: since i got here i feel compelled to do these weird things i don't really want to do. EB: by some kind of voice that i can't really even hear. i don't know, it is hard to explain. TT: Perhaps the early symptoms of an anxiety disorder, like post-traumatic stress?
haha, John??? suffering from anxiety and PTSD??? hahaha, imagine. haha.
ha.
uh.
