I know. It’s another picture of me! ⁣ Today though is because I’m up and out early for the @sheffieldhospitals #Walkforwards event. At the National Trust Longshaw Estate. ⁣ I’ve not really done much fundraising or build up for this. I think because of the time of year I’ve tried to put it at the back of my mind. ⁣ This time 2 years ago I was just about recovering from my second operation. After having my last twins I had to go back for surgery to repair a twisted bowel. ⁣ I’m taking part today not only to raise money for the hospitals charity but to raise awareness of Placenta Percreta. ⁣ I don’t like asking. How to create a top-down character with Playmaker + Unity

So, this post is going to be pretty straightforward. We are creating an animated top-down shooter character with Playmaker with the help of Blender. Please keep in mind we are noobs and nothing in here is final. Not the animations, not the character. Nothing. It’s for learning purposes only... for now. We wean in no way to create a tutorial. We link below two great tutorials on the subject. We are simply sharing our process.

Why?

Because the Adventure Creator character system doesn’t suit our game in terms of movement. It’s too 1 dimensional and ready for the purpose it serves: adventure games only and it’s good for 3rd person controllers, but not top-down. Right now, even though it’s an awesome tool and it’s been helping us a lot, it doesn’t support a wide range of movement animations.

Breakdown 

We need the character to be able to move alongside with the WASD keys. The camera won’t rotate or spin. It will strictly follow the Player. W is for forward movement, S for backwards, A and D for left and right. Nothing new here, we guess...

Blender

In Blender we will need to create 4 different animations for the walk phase.: WalkForwards, WalkBackwards, WalkLeft, WalkRight and an Idle one for starters. We might feel the need to approach this on a diferent way adding more animation for more axis, but we decided to reserve that for the future. The animations aren’t polished enough but they serve the learning purpose. Below is the walk forwards cycle.

Unity + Playmaker

Now it’s time for the best part: working on our result. We used these 2 tutorials available on YouTube in order to understand Mecanim: Create a 3rd person system and  Playmaker: Setup Player Character With Mecanim In Unity. These two are very useful and helped us a lot in understanding how the Animator works with Unity and with Playmaker. Big thanks to their creators. They won new subscribers, most definitely.

We know the basics of the Character Controller. Those are: get the Axis Vector, store it and then use it on the Character Simple move for the base movement. Then we just pick the mouse position with Mouse Pick and add a Look At action to the character and make him look at the Mouse Position everytime. These are the basics of our character movement. But then we want to add animations and that’s when the world ended (such dramatic boys).

Fortunately we started looking around Google and we found something called Blend Trees. We went searching for that and finally there was some light at the end of the tunnel (yeah, not literally...). Now all we have to do is to create a Blend Tree and then assign it our animations and create two floats for X and Z axis like this:

There we go... MAGIC! And... Leftwards. What a word! Moving on, we need to assign each of them their X and Z values.

Now the next steps were to add the following Playmaker FSM (open it, it’s worth it!) and to test it out.

Voilà! A basic movement grows from nothing.
