Walmart store closing: Walmart to close four underperforming Chicago Stores

Walmart announced  Tuesday that it would abruptly close four underperforming Chicago four stores, citing millions in annual losses. The company said its eight Chicago stores haven't been profitable since they opened 17 years ago. According to a press release, this has resulted in "hundreds of millions of dollars in losses annually," which have nearly doubled over the past five years. All four stores will close on April 16, although their pharmacy will remain open for 30 days. The locations are in the Kenwood, Lakeview, Little Village and Chatham neighborhoods of Chicago. "Over the years, we have tried several different strategies to improve the business performance of these locations, including creating smaller stores, expanding product assortment and services," the company said in a release. "As we looked for solutions, it became more and more clear that for these stores, there was nothing the leaders could do to help us get to the point where they would be profitable." Walmart said all employees at these four stores are eligible to be transferred to other Walmart locations and will be paid as of August 11. The company announced will keep its other four Chicago stores open. According to media reports, Walmart said: it would close a dozen stores in March. Walmart also announced in March that it would lay off hundreds of employees from e-commerce fulfillment centers nationwide. As of January 31, the company operated more than 5,300 retail locations, including supercenters, discount stores, Sam's Club, and smaller format stores. Why is Walmart closing the Chicago store? Comments from cardstumble: Personally I never shop here.  Shoppers should try to spend their money elsewhere   Amazon is cruel to its warehouse workers, overworking them, setting quotas, destroying their health etc..  Then they use this employee blood money to gain unfair advantage and to destroy competitors who may in some cases be decent and try to treat their workers at least reasonably well?

comment from cardstumble: I shop at the Walmart neighborhood stores and supercenters all the time.  Prices aren’t as low as ALDI but there is a lot of choice and they are open from early  until late.   I don’t get the feeling that the workers in the stores are victimized.  I may be wrong but I don’t think so.  Some of the Walmartstores in the center city areas were heavily vandalized during the riots in early June..   Interestingly because of the pandemic everythng  is re-arranged in many of the stores and it is more self service.  There are now just a few checkout workers, if any

Walmart (NYSE: WMT) stock jumped about 6% in the pre-market trading hours after the company reported better-than-expected second quarter 2021 financial results. The retail giant’s adjusted EPS of $1.56 and revenue of $137.7 billion excelled analysts’ estimates.

On a GAAP basis, earnings soared 80% to $2.27 per share. Walmart US eCommerce sales grew 97% with strong results across all channels.
