EP REVIEW: Bodom After Midnight – Paint The Sky With Blood - Napalm Records
EP REVIEW: Bodom After Midnight – Paint The Sky With Blood – Napalm Records
Recorded towards the end of 2020, Paint The Sky With Blood (Napalm Records) was meant to signal the beginning of a new era in the career of Bodom After Midnight frontman Alexi Laiho. His first release since leaving the groundbreaking Finnish melodic death metal act Children of Bodom the previous year should have been the beginning of an exciting new journey. Instead, his tragic death in late…

Paradise Lost Album Review: Obsidian
Tumblr media
(Nuclear Blast)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Few metal bands have traversed the sub-genre circuit quite like Paradise Lost. The early material of the Halifax, England band was thrashy and doomy. Their mid-to-late 90′s output jumped further into the mainstream, as singer Nick Holmes sounded more and more like James Hetfield while the rest of the band embraced the electronic, industrial sounds popularized by the likes of Nine Inch Nails. And from then up until the mid-2000′s, guitarist Greg Mackintosh often adopted the swinging riffs of nu metal. But their last few records have been your classic back to basics albums, harder rocking and slower burning but mighty. Their most recent and 16th record Obsidian is, at times, a combination of all of the above. Holmes’ singing style alternates between clear crooning and spooky growls, perfect for his wavering thoughts on his place in the world and faith, while the theatrical charges of the instrumentation give the album a sense of musical narrative.
Immediately, take opener “Darker Thoughts”, which begins with the melodic singing to which recent Paradise Lost listeners have been accustomed, along with acoustic guitar picking and weeping strings. “This one-way street you’re on, you’ll never be fulfilled / And this one-way street you’re on is gonna get you killed,” Holmes sings, an echoing cry for togetherness before his vocals turn darker and deeper. Mackintosh provides sky-high solos, and Waltteri Väyrynen’s drums are simply huge, announcing the band’s varying aesthetic on the record. Other songs effectively change tempos, too, like buoyant rocker “Ghosts” and closer “Ravenghast”, which starts with plinky piano and noise washes, eventually speeding into doom and an epic gallop, ending with the same piano. And it’s Holmes’ vocals that alternate on “Fall From Grace”, buoyed by Mackintosh’s harmonic riff. At the same time, it’s the consistently paced tracks that show how Paradise Lost remain cohesive among the variance: the steadiness of “The Devil Embraced”, swaying shanty of “Serenity”, groovy drum beat “Forsaken”, and circular guitars of “Ending Days”. Ultimately, an in-tune band is a symbolic contrast to what Holmes sees in humanity: “The splintered argument / Such a withering lament,” he sings, eventually sighing, “Hopes will die young.” It may not be the message we need right now, but it’s hard to argue with, and it certainly comes from a place of heart.

We mourn the death of Alexi Laiho ! One of the most renowned guitarists in the world, Alexi Laiho, has passed away. The musician, most notably known as the front man of @cobhc, died in his home in Helsinki, Finland, last week. Laiho had suffered from long-term health issues during his last years. Alexi Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen founded CHILDREN OF BODOM in 1993, and the band was one of the most internationally acclaimed metal acts in Finland up until their very last farewell concert in December of 2019. Last year Alexi Laiho put together BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT, who recorded three songs and shot one music video, which will be released later on posthumously. Besides CHILDREN OF BODOM, Laiho was known for acts such as WARMEN, SINERGY, KYLÄHULLUT and THE LOCAL BAND. Awarded with a Metal Hammer Golden Gods and several other international prizes, the guitarist was also the main star, leading a group of one hundred guitar players at Helsinki Festival in 2015 in "100 Guitars From Hel" – a massive concert piece he composed. "We are crushed by the sudden passing of our dear friend and band member. Words cannot describe this shock and the profound sadness that we feel", Daniel Freyberg, Mitja Toivonen and Waltteri Väyrynen from BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT state. The talented guitarist and musician relished his roles as stepdad in his patchwork family, and as uncle and godfather. Especially during the last years, the important family ties brought a welcomed balance to his life and the active touring. Laiho was particularly close with his big sister, parents and his sister's daughter. Laiho's sister says: "We are all absolutely shocked and devastated. We ask for privacy and understanding during these hard times. My little brother's funeral will take place privately." Alexi Laiho will also be deeply missed by his family in Australia. "Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father. Our hearts are eternally broken", Kelli Wright-Laiho says.
