Voltron Season Seven: Thoughts and Reactions
As you can see, I am out of hibernation mode ;p Just finished up a bit ago.
My thoughts in no particular order on season seven. Prepare for a few unintelligible spazzes and random questions that like, why were these not answered? Oh Voltron writers, you and your plot holes. Tagged with all of my previously mentioned ones so here goes!
Okay, so Adam? As much as I didn’t care for how he wasn’t supporting Shiro, I was excited by his role and inclusion in the story! Also, haha, I laughed because I named the one character in my Keith and Shiro backstory Adam and he’s a pilot too, haha. They definitely aren’t the same one because mine was a jerk, but I love that somehow I still got that name. (or maybe that’s how he and Shiro got to talking after Shiro confronts him for what he said to Keith? hehe. Look at me ;p)
But then. When they were mobilizing to fight the first wave I’m like, is Adam a pilot? And then we saw him and then his ship blinked out… gosh. Shiro at the wall with his name broke my heart. There’s a lot of regret there. Definitely something I wish had been further explored, but I’m not surprised they didn’t. There’s a lot that has been skipped over already.
So… Shiro has a disease that gets brought up once, never impacted him at all in the first six seasons and… never mentioned again? Er… what was the point of that exactly? (clone body not have the illness?)
Oh baby Keef. I cheered when he punched Griffin. Glad to see Griffin has grown up since then. But uh, can someone confirm for me the new cadet pilot with the glasses. Is her name… Wasabi? Usagi? And while I adore my Keith backstory this one was endearing too. And his dad died in a fire? Gosh. I had a feeling after the fireman refs but to hear it confirmed. Sad.
Where did Axca go? Like, she left the base with the Paladins and they have no resources to provide her a ship. So…? I’m curious with her popping up at the end behind Krolia and Keith at the grave… interesting. Once it was disproved that she wasn’t Keith’s twin I thought she might be Krolia’s sister but no mention when they met so… hmm. Curious and curioser. (does she like Keith? Hehe ♥ I admit I think they’re pretty asthecially pleasing together and I love Axca’s new design.)
Veronica is a fucking badass. As soon as she showed up on screen I’m like, that’s Lance’s sister. My sister was like, no, and I’m like, uh, her name is Veronica, coloring is the same including the blue eyes and in that really crappy family projection photo from season one there was a relative in a military uniform. Damn, I love her so much. Almost cried when I thought she died (twice xD). Also, her teasing Lance about Allura and her little smirk smile there? I died. So fucking cute.
This is my personal preference but I did not care for the game show episode at all, nor the “reason” behind it. There were a couple cute moments in it (all of them choosing each other to leave and I winced when Lance kept being called the dumb one and could taste the angst) but overall, my least favorite filler. And this coming from someone who adores game shows xD
The “lost in space” episode also wasn’t high on my list. I loved the idea of it and them forming a circle (that was so flipping cute) to stay together with the check ins (and a note to Keith and Krolia’s time together) but the words exchanged? I get it and didn’t mind but they never *really* resolved it. Not really. And some pretty hurtful things were said. Also, the fact they have almost fatal oxygen depletion based upon Keith’s indicator and their weary lines under their eyes, but then they literally bounce back full power to fight? Just throw the realism out the window. Just like the castle of lions losing all oxygen in a matter of hours two seasons ago xDD
How have we ever survived without the space wolf? Seriously? I’m bummed his name is not Yorak but I’ll take Cosmo. Very cute! Love how keith is waiting for the wolf to name himself. Oh, sweetie.
The Blade of Marmora luring with the Druids was delicious. Loved that bit. Glad Kolivan made it out. Wasn’t surprised when Krolia left the main cast; it was getting crowded and given that the writers have difficulty managing characters on a regular basis at times the more the less merrier.
On that note, loved Romelle in the first episode but she practically disappeared for the rest of the season. Disappointed. Thought her and Hunk were hilarious.
Same token bummed Matt was offscreen for most of it. But again, see above.
The three year time gap was interesting. Never really explained well either; pretty much I think a way for earth to get completely overrun by Galra. On that note, loved all of the Sam episodes, think the new pilots are pretty neat additions. Particularly love… Usagi? Wasabi? Kinkade too; a man of few words and I adore his name. Iverson too was a pleasant surprise and I loved his apology to Keith later and his constant backing of Sam. Also, Collen is a badass too. I do have to give credit to the writers; they make some amazingly strong female characters and it’s such a breath of fresh air (from watching YYH it was a stark reminder how things have changed over the years in terms of representation across the board on many things).
But one woman I did not care for was the Admiral. Boo hiss. I also hate that I called her turning on them as she was adamant throughout the entire thing about protecting earth in “her way” and I was waiting for this move. She did save the Paladins lives but she endangered them in the first place so… I acknowledge her desire to protect earth but am disappointed in how her character was played out. (and honestly, why the fuck would she trust Sendak to keep up his end of the deal? Why? Bit of weaker writing there).
Speaking of characters… where’s Haggar? At the end with the giant robot my sister and I were arguing who was driving it; I was Team Lotor and she was Team Haggar. Nada to both of us. Very interesting with that result too;  how was one Altean doing all that? Hmmm. And with the colony missing something is definitely up.
The Hunk family feels I was not expecting and loved them. I was glad he didn’t endanger the team anymore after he found his parents were not accessible, but dios I felt so bad. It’s hard especially to see Lnace and Pidge with their families and he with none. Loved his and Keith’s moment too. ♥ Keith was particularly awkwardly sweet and I loved it.
And Lance’s family! Gosh. Him hugging his niece and nephew broke my heart and then his being mobbed by his family stomped it into the ground with love. So. Beautiful. My boy has his family and I am so so happy.
Speaking of the families! Haha, I’m excited that I was write in that both Lance and Hunk’s families are stateside and I am going with my headcanon of Arizona (Garrison location) given how they were *right there* to be rescued. My childhood besties idea for Lance and Hunk when Lance immigrated over is still well and strong!!!
Back to Lance. I was so so so excited to see him getting some really nice shots and pieces in this season. The sword (c’mon broadsword, let’s see you come back too), the giant cannon gun, the amazing sniper shots (hoshit don’t get me started on that part, I love good sniper cover and damnnn ♥) his attempts to seat everyone in Lions (whoops xD), his stepping up to really support Keith and be second in command... just so much good stuff for my boy ♥ I was freaking out when Red didn’t come right away in the summoning thing after he and Veronica went under fire, but I’m like, Red always does things differently. And then she came in like ajdfkajfklda right when Lance was closing his eyes and thinking it was the end and just, so good. Great timing on that part.
Shiro’s new arm… loved the angst and pain as first one didn’t calibrate xD I’m terrible. I will admit I’m not sold on the design; very bulky and I dislike that it’s not attached; that’s not a proper hug! But I am happy he has one so will go with that.
Er, this is getting long. Last few.
How was Shiro breathing in space in fight against sendak? Someone, please tell me. But also yesss, loved that the two of them had a final fight. Brings back memories. When Keith saved him I really wanted a throwback to the “as many times as it takes” but alas, no go.
On Sendak… is he the main big bad? He sure has quite the Galra fleet. How do Ezor and Zethrid’s turn to piracy factor in? Was expecting something else with Lotor given their mentions of him early on. Is space just one giant war out there right now? We never really found out any details and here I was expecting Axca to fill us in.
The Atlas turning into its own Voltron was super cool. Loved all of the fight scenes although I admit I get bored with all the constant blasts so would have liked those shortened down and more character stuff, but it is a show geared for little kids so… boom boom pow.
The very end speech via Shiro had me on my toes as I didn’t think any of our team died but I was legit slowly starting to panic that somehow the new cadets were going to be the new Voltron pilots because ours were unavailable Phew, not the case! Loved the little hospital scenes popping around, particularly Lance’s nephew wearing his helmet and then Keith waking up to Krolia there. Oh, and Matt getting a hug from his mom! (and that ponytail! ♥ I love guys with a nice ponytail, mm, weakness).
Overall giving this season a 7/10 rating. Not my lowest, definitely not my highest. Very much appreciated though having a longer season to watch.
If you have thoughts feel free to comment on the post! I will not be posting any asks with spoilers in the ask until next Saturday though so best way to get a response is comment here. What did you all think of the season?

[Darkwing Duck] How we Roll
Apparently we needed 2,330 words of Darkwing Duck family feels fluff involving sushi today.
“Launchpad!” Drake grinned at his partner in delight. “I didn’t know you could use chopsticks!”
“Oh yeah.” Launchpad deftly dropped a piece of crab sushi into his mouth with his chopsticks, taking a quick second to chew and swallow before speaking again. “Went around the world with Mr. McD and the kids, picked up a few things along the way. Kind of had to, Mr. McD is a stickler for table manners, especially when it comes to meal time negotiations.” He went to grab another pieces and it slipped, falling out of his chopsticks. The chopsticks quickly followed, one falling off the table and rolling on to the floor. “Course, I tend to crash them too.” Launchpad chuckled ruefully, then picked up a piece of salmon nigiri. “To be honest, I’m better at eating sushi with my fingers.” If that was the only thing Launchpad crashed tonight, Drake would count it as getting off lightly.
“Using fingers to eat sushi is still culturally acceptable.” Drake grinned, picking up piece of nigiri and daintily eating it. Yellow tail. One of his favourites. “How are you doing, Honey?” He asked, turning to his daughter, who seemed to be sulking a bit. “I’m still not so sure about this.” Gosalyn poked her california roll suspiciously, holding the chopsticks like daggers. She hadn’t been entirely thrilled with Drake’s suggestion for dinner, his attempt to branch out their diets a little bit more. “Raw fish?” “Only some of it is raw, and none of the sashimi is for kids.” Drake grinned, giving Launchpad a quick wink. “You’re not ready for the raw fish.”
“What?!” Gosalyn straightened, her face twisting in outrage. “What do you mean ‘I’m not ready’-?!” “You haven’t tried any of the boring cooked stuff, and you can’t even hold your chopsticks properly.” Drake stole the california roll Gosalyn had been poking from her plate and quickly ate it. “Hey!” Gosalyn glowered at him. “Where did you learn to use chopsticks anyway?” She grumbled. “Studying with Goose Lee. How do you think I ate in Kung Pow City?” Drake shrugged, going after a nice looking piece of mackerel nigiri. Although the Chinese food in Kung Pow City was certainly different from Japanese sushi. But still, chopstick mechanics were similar, even if the shapes were slightly different. “When travelling, do as the locals do.” “Here, here!” Launchpad cheerfully agreed, and then paused. “Well. Unless they’re hurting people. In that case, you stop them.” “Yes, that.” Drake agreed. That was the principal thing that being a superhero was about. Gosalyn gave them both suspicious looks, then carefully picked up a piece of her california roll with her fingers and hesitantly ate it. She chewed for another moment, then swallowed, quickly reaching over and grabbing another piece to shove in her mouth. “It’s alright.” She muttered. “Glad to hear it.” Drake fought a smirk. “Although you’re still not getting any of the good stuff until you can master chopsticks.” “I can do that.” Gosalyn scoffed, picking up the chopsticks and arranging them in her hands. The top one slipped between her fingers. Drake said nothing as she attempted to figure it out, occasionally squinting at his hand as he picked things up to eat, as if trying to figure out if he was using some sort of magic trick. Launchpad gave him an amused look, dipping a piece of tiger roll into the soy sauce for a moment before sticking the dripping piece in his mouth and eating it with great delight. Drake wrinkled his bill at him, he’d overpower the delicate flavours of the fish with that much sauce, the heathen.
“Okay.” Gosalyn spoke up, sounding annoyed. “How do you do it?” “Like this.” Drake set his chopsticks down and reached over to help her, folding her fingers correctly. “Bottom one rests on your thumb, top one you hold like a pencil.” He helped move the sticks in the proper way.
“And then you use the chopsticks to chomp like an alligator!” Gosalyn squeaked in delight, clacking the tips of the chopsticks together. “Ah… Yes. Precisely.” He agreed with some amusement, releasing her hands. “Like an alligator.”
“Keen Gear!” She exclaimed, reaching to grab one of the california rolls still on her plate. It exploded between her chopsticks, falling to pieces. Gosalyn’s face fell for a second, then she got a determined look on her face, tongue sticking out of the side of her bill as she tried picking up the pieces of the dismantled california roll. He certainly had to give her points for determination. Drake turned his attention back to the sushi platter, debating what to eat next. Not the octopus, he’d leave that for Launchpad, too chewy and he didn’t like the feeling of the suckers between his teeth. Something moved in the corner of his eye and he reacted without thinking, catching it with the tips of his chopsticks before it could strike him. “Neat-o!” Gosalyn cheered, staring at thim in wonder. “You just *BLAM!* caught that! Snatched it right out of the air!”
“Yep, yep, yep.” He set the piece of what looked like cucumber down on her plate, feeling extremely proud of himself. If it had been mostly a fluke, well, they didn’t need to know that. “Can you catch a fly out of midair too?!” Gosalyn demanded. “Usually.” He shrugged it off. Drake Mallard was a humble person. “But it’s not really worth it. You have to clean the chopsticks off after. Bug guts.” “EW!” Gosalyn’s face scrunched up, her tongue sticking out in disgust. “I wanna learn how to do that.” She decided, a fierce expression on her face. “And then I’ll make Tank eat the fly.”
He probably should say something against that. Probably. Drake glanced over at Launchpad, who seemed to be pointedly ignoring the comment and decided that his partner had the right idea of it.
“Here.” He flipped his chopsticks around and used the thicker back end to grab a slice of caterpillar roll and putting it on Gosalyn’s plate. “Try that. It’s like the california roll.”
Gosalyn’s eyes lit up, before narrowing as she focused on grabbing the caterpillar roll with her chopsticks, fumbling it a few times.
“Why’d you flip the chopsticks around?” Launchpad pointed at Drake’s hand, looking confused. “I ate off the other end.” Drake shrugged, turning his chopsticks back around. “Isn’t that how you serve if you’re sharing food?” That way you weren’t sharing germs and saliva. “Never thought of it.” Launchpad wiggled his fingers at Drake. Right. “Usually just pass it over and put it on their plate.”
Gosalyn made a confused noise as she finally got the piece of sushi into her mouth and ate it. “It’s warm-?” She said, confused and slightly disturbed. “Has cooked eel in it instead of crab.” Drake said mildly. Avocado, cucumber, and eel. “EEL?!” Gosalyn’s eyes went wide. “Gross!” “But tasty!” Launchpad pointed out, grabbing a piece of caterpillar roll as well and eating it. “You should try some of the roe.” “Roe?” “Here.” Drake scooped some small orange looking dots off a pieces with the back end of his chopsticks and putting it on her plate. “Try a small sample first.” Gosalyn gave him a suspicious look, but dipped the tips of her chopsticks into the bright orange dots and putting it in her mouth. Her eyes lit up. “They pop!” “Well, yeah.” Launchpad grinned. “They’re fish eggs! Little tiny tiny ones!” “Groooooosssss.” Gosalyn breathed, excited. “Can I have more?” “Sure.” Drake motioned to the  platters in the middle of the table. They had a lot of different kinds. “Anything you can grab with your chopsticks. And no raw sushi.” He smirked to himself as her jaw tensed up, a determined look on her face as she gripped the chopsticks tightly in her hand. Launchpad gave him a confused face and Drake gave a small shake of his head. Gosalyn stood up in her chair, one hand braced on the table as she looked over the platters of sushi. One of the joys of all-you-can-eat sushi was that it gave the opportunity to try a lot of different kinds. And between the active lives the three of them lead, they could certainly pack the food away.
She leaned forward to snatch at the closest sushi to her and shoving it in her mouth. Her expression turned puzzled. “I don’t think that was fish.” She complained once her mouth wasn’t full anymore. “Tamago is an omlette with normal eggs and Mirin, a type of sweet rice wine.” Drake explained. Honestly, he was just grateful she wasn’t talking with her mouth full. “That’s why it was sweet.” Gosalyn nodded as if that made sense. She reached for a piece with cooked shrimp, and at the last second, twisted her chopsticks to make a grab at a piece of raw tuna. Drake caught her chopsticks in his own. “Nice try, missy.” He declared as she growled in annoyance. He released her chopsticks and grabbed the tuna, quickly eating it. “Mmmm. Delicious.”
Gosalyn muttered to herself as she readjusted the chopsticks and grabbed a kappa roll, filled with cucumber. Drake smirked to himself. That was one way to get her to eat her vegetables. Launchpad glanced between them, looking suspicious as he went for a piece of octopus. Good. Drake watched his daughter try a couple more pieces before going for a beautiful slice of salmon, intercepting her. She muttered in annoyance, attempting to wrestle with the chopsticks. Drake smiled, foiling her plans. Gosalyn growled, and then it suddenly turned into an all out chopstick war, trying to grab and eat everything in reach. Launchpad yelped, then dove in with his hands as well, grabbing more than one piece at a time and shoving them into his bill before they could get to them.
It was rude, it was messy, it was so perfectly them that Drake had to smile to himself as he fended off the dwindling pieces of raw sushi from Gosalyn. It helped that she had far from mastered it, and kept fumbling the pieces that he would quickly grab. And then suddenly there was nothing left but wasabi and pickled ginger. Drake leaned back in his seat, feeling both full and satisfied as Launchpad started to pick at the ginger before offering it to Gosalyn. At least no one had accidently inhaled wasabi this time around. His first introduction to the green horseradish paste hadn’t been pleasant at all, although he didn’t mind a little bit of it. “I’ll get it next time.” Gosalyn muttered, trying to grab the slices of pickled ginger. “We’ll see, honey.” Drake said, pulling out his wallet as the waitress walked up with the check. With the mess they’d sort of just made, he didn’t blame them for not asking if there was anything else they could get.
It was a not uncommon occurance going out to eat with Gosalyn. Thankfully there had been no livestock involved this time around. He left a hefty tip, then escorted Gosalyn out of the building, Launchpad automatically following, guarding their backs. Gosalyn kept the cheap bamboo chopsticks with her, holding them like a stake, muttering about the utensils behind handy in case of rogue vampire attacks. A couple walking by them picked up the pace a little as they overheard what she was saying and he ignored them. It might have seemed odd to anyone else, but it made Drake happy to see Gosalyn growing up to be happy, healthy, and most of all, herself. Not trying to fit any pre existing molds that didn’t fit her. No matter how unlady-like her behaviour seemed to be, or terrified Birdie. He’d grown up to forge his own path, Launchpad too to some extent. And his daughter was already an amazing tiny person. Although she still had some growing up to do. Years.
“You know, we have several sets of chopsticks at home.” Drake casually mentioned, trying not to sound amused and failing.
“We do?!” Gosalyn exclaimed in excitement, then turned suspicious. “Really? How come I’ve never seen them?” “Oh! That one I can answer!” Launchpad volunteered. “That’s cause you never help with put the dishes away.” “I help occasionally.” Gosalyn retorted, torn between pride and defiance. Drake barely kept from snorting in amusement. The silverware was the only thing that was safe from Gosalyn, and even then it sometimes ended up being embedded in the wall. “And just you wait, Dad! I’ll master chopsticks in no time at all!” Gosalyn waved her stolen chopsticks in Drake’s face, looking stern. “And then we’ll see who gets the ‘good stuff’.” “Uh-huh.” He nodded, a skeptical look on his face. She snorted in annoyance and stomped forward, fingers moving to automatically try to hold them properly. He’d be willing to bet that she’d probably eat everything with them for the next three weeks, until she felt she’d sufficiently mastered them. He stretched, then rubbed his full belly, feeling happy and content, surrounded by two of his favourite people. It’d been a good dinner. Tasty food, no massive disasters, no villainous attacks, and he hadn’t had to pay for any dishes or property damage. “I don’t get it.” Launchpad whispered quietly at him. “Why don’t you want her trying the raw fish? It’s good.”
“It is.” Drake gave his partner a slow, smug smirk. “But this way, she’ll want to try it.” Launchpad looked puzzled a moment longer, before his expression slowly cleared as he realised that Drake had essentially tricked Gosalyn into learning how to use chopsticks and try raw fish, something she wouldn’t have even contemplated when they first walked in.
“Hot. Dog.” Launchpad whispered in awe, glancing between the still fuming Gosalyn and the smug Drake. “Good one.”
“Yeah well.” Drake shrugged, bumping Launchpad’s arm with his own in solidarity. “Let me know if you think of anything that’ll trick her to cleaning her room.” -fin-

Where’s My Mirror?
Posting some of my 25 poems for the day. Going for 100 in February.
Where’s My Mirror?
It’s the double-blind administration.
Gloves are on then off then
we aren’t sure whose they even are.
I’ll meet you at the palace.
Here’s a list of things:
Microwaves in kiddie pool
hoarse breath on neck
inescapable feeling of inescapability.
So, we all joined back up
after the grazing. Held
the fierce oboes up to our
cheeks. Devoured the wasabi.

‘Fins fam’ finds home in Bethany with Fins Ale House &?Raw Bar
Coastal Point • Tyler Valliant: Head chef Celaso Morales, left, owner Jeff Hamer, second from right, and Director of Operations Briana Roviske gather with the crew during their opening-night celebration last Thursday, May 25.It’s what Jeff Hamer, president and founder of the Fins Hospitality Group, likes to refer to as “being the rising tide.”
The long-time restaurateur has built his success directly around that of his “Fins family,” ever since his days of launching his very first venture in Rehoboth Beach.
“That’s why we like to say, ‘It’s the rising tide,’” Hamer explained. “If we can provide good-paying jobs, we can lift the people up around us, then the community just becomes stronger. [Our employees] all have families, homes in the areas, mortgages, their kids are in school — they have a stake in the community.
“That’s really been our blessing — it’s not about me when people say they love Fins,” Hamer continued. “It’s the employees. They’re the ones that do it. I come up with the ideas and kind of paint broad strokes, and they’re the ones that make it happen. They make Fins, they really do.” While Hamer’s vision has come a long way since its early beginnings — now including four Fins locations spanning from Rehoboth to Berlin, Md., Claws Seafood House in Rehoboth and Big Oyster Brewing Co., which set to debut its new brew pub in Lewes later this month — the group’s “be the rising tide” philosophy has remained the same.
That was the case when the newest addition to the Fins family opened its doors last week, ready to embrace their new home in the Bethany Beach area with Fins Ale House & Raw Bar.
“My wife, Kim, and I actually take our morning walk in Bethany now,” said Hamer of his new daily routine after dropping off his kids at the bus stop en route to Worcester Preparatory School in Berlin. “It’s really just a great community. Everyone is really nice. It’s quiet. There’s plenty of nature trails here. It’s just its own little beautiful place in Delaware.”
After taking over the former location of Burnzy’s Bar & Grille in the Marketplace at Sea Colony, Fins Bethany will aim to stay true to its roots while offering some unique additions specific to the new location.
“We wanted to make sure that we brought in some veteran staff that represent our brand the way that we know they can,” said Director of Operations Briana Rovinske.
“We still have our ‘Build Your Own’ Fresh Fish Board — you could come into Fins seven nights a week and have a different meal every night just off of the fresh fish board — but then our chefs have come in with a lot of fresh ideas and a lot of new menu items that we’re very excited about.”
Menu staples and signature specials
Longtime members of the Fins family, including Rovinske, head chef Celaso Morales and executive chef Max Sopinskyy, have teamed up to create the location’s signature dishes to go along with the ever-changing menu of nightly specials.
So far, the new dishes, such as the Grilled Shellfish Combo — featuring baby lobster tail, shrimp, scallops and chorizo — have become fast fan favorites.
“We want to give people different options. We keep it fresh for the customers and keep it fresh for us, too,” said Morales of his culinary vision. “I’m very excited to be here in Bethany. I want to show people what we can do.”
The menu also includes an array of seafood specialties, ranging from the Fins’ Shellfish Pasta, Spanish Seafood Paella and Balsamic Glazed Salmon to some of the usual seafood suspects, including fish-and-chips, both fried shrimp and fried oyster dinner platters, and jumbo crabcakes.
While the seafood choices continue onto the sandwich menu to feature the Fins’ Lobster Roll, fish tacos, buffalo shrimp and fried oyster po’ boys, and more, there’s also plenty of sandwich and entrée choices for land-lovers, with dishes such as Chicken Marsala or center-cut filet mignon, honey bourbon chicken sandwich, half-pound burger and a full menu of soups and salads.
As always, one of the most popular draws has been the Fins raw bar, offering up freshly shucked selections of oysters, clams and signature shooters cocktails to go along with steamed oyster, clam, shrimp, mussels and combo options as well.
Favorites on the appetizer menu included Fins’ tuna nachos with fresh ahi tuna, house-made guacamole and honey-wasabi aioli; chorizo cheese fries; Fins’ Homemade Crab Dip; flash-fried calamari, oysters and lobster tails; and fried green tomatoes, just to name a few.
Big Oyster brews and more on tap
No matter the menu selection, the Fins team is well equipped to recommend something from the newly revamped wine list for pairing, or one of the local brews from their draft rotation.
There was something on tap for everyone during opening weekend, with selections from Fins’ Big Oyster Brewing Company, such as the Solar Power Belgian blonde Witbier, fruit-forward hopped POW! (as in “right in the kisser”) and traditional throwback Bonnethead Pale Ale.
When the new 15-barrel, 80-seat brew pub launches in Lewes, Big Oyster brews in cans will be available as well.
As for the rising tide, even with the new ventures on the horizon, Hamer and his team are ready to establish themselves as part of their new community in Bethany, the same way they always have before — whether it’s through creating new jobs that can one day become careers or donating to the Fisher House and other military organizations, as they do with their north locations, and “Make a Difference Monday” fundraisers, as they do in Berlin.
“Each community is different and has its own needs. That’s always an important part of our mission is to give back,” said Hamer. “We feel like the more ventures we get into, the more jobs we can provide the community. A lot of our general managers now started off as bus-people or dishwashers. Everybody works their way up.
“We’re a family. People stick around for a long time. We offer plenty of opportunity for growth, and we like to promote from within — that’s one of our philosophies,” added Rovinske. “‘Fins fam for life.’ That’s the motto.”
Fins Ale House & Raw Bar is located at 33544 Market Place, south of Bethany Beach. The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and will stay open year-round. For more information, visit their website at www.finsrawbar.com or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/finsalehousebethany, or call the restaurant at (302) 539-3467.

The Best Takeout & Delivery We Got This Week (3) added to Google Docs
The Best Takeout & Delivery We Got This Week (3)
Restaurants across the state have slowly started to reopen, and close, and reopen again over the past few months. It can be a lot to keep up with, and there’s still a large degree of uncertainty around the safety of dining out. Want to know what’s safe? Eating at home. And if you’re as bored of canned tuna as we are by now, here are a few great meals we’ve had recently that you can get for takeout or delivery.
Featured In The Ultimate Austin Delivery & Takeout Guide See all our guides Week Of August 10  Raphael Brion SeoulJu Korean Kitchen & Bar $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Korean  in  North Lamar $$$$ 9515 N Lamar Blvd Ste 230
The North Lamar Korean restaurant Seoulju has been takeout only since the pandemic hit, and just last week they launched delivery of both food and drink. Which means that you can get dishes like Korean Fried Chicken, kimchi stew, and spicy rice cakes, alongside beer and soju delivered right to your door. We opted for two sauces on our still-crispy chicken wings: Korean Sweet & Chili and Extra Spicy Sweet & Chili. Get the extra spicy.
 Raphael Brion Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop $ $ $ $ Tacos ,  Mexican ,  Cafe/Bakery ,  Tex-Mex  in  East Austin $$$$ 2305 E 7th St
The dining room at Joe’s Bakery, the family-run East Side Tex-Mex staple, is closed. For now they’re sticking to a drive-in model (you can’t even call ahead or order online). You park, waitstaff comes out and asks if you need a menu, they take your order, and the food comes out fast. We recently got an order of breakfast tacos (migas con todo and a bacon, egg, and cheese) as well as a side order of carne guisada and a whole bunch of their fluffy homemade flour tortillas. Everything was excellent, as always. You don’t even need to ask for their spicy salsa - they’ll put so many containers in your takeout bag that you’ll have leftover salsa for days and days.
Nicolai McCrary The Gossip Shack $ $ $ $ Southern ,  Soul Food ,  Fried Chicken  in  East Austin ,  Windsor Park $$$$ 2709 Rogge Ln
The menu at Gossip Shack consists of just a few items - chicken, waffles, and waffle fries. But everything they offer, they do exceptionally well. Their wings are some of our favorite in town, due in large part to their unique offering of flavors, like jerk chicken or their signature CPR (Cajun, parmesan, ranch). And those are exactly what we got - large, perfectly fried chicken wings coated in Cajun spices, ranch seasoning, and enough parmesan to make a bowl of spaghetti jealous. Orders can take a while and they often sell out before their stated hours, so call ahead and get your order in ahead of time.
 Nicolai McCrary La Fruta Feliz $ $ $ $ Tacos ,  Mexican ,  Tex-Mex  in  East Austin ,  MLK ,  Mueller $$$$ 3124 Manor Rd
We love a lot of things about La Fruta Feliz - their barbacoa de chivo (barbecue goat) is a favorite on tacos, and their al pastor is excellent - but if you’re looking for a really good and hearty lunch, their torta is a clear winner. Coming in at a massive 12 pounds (don’t fact check us on that), it’s packed full of meat - in this case, al pastor - and veggies for just under $5. They also have a huge fruit and veggie juice list, so go ahead and throw on a Digestivo (papaya, orange, and carrots) to help you get it all down.
Week Of August 3  Raphael Brion Carpenters Hall $ $ $ $ American ,  Seafood  in  South Lamar $$$$ 400 Josephine St
Carpenters Hall at the Carpenter Hotel has switched to takeout only, and they’re selling a cold fried chicken picnic for two or four. For $28, the picnic is not an insignificant amount of food, consisting of a half chicken (with a ranch dressing and spicy honey), potato salad, roasted green beans, and a cabbage slaw. Plus two very good chocolate chip cookies. You will have leftovers.
 Raphael Brion Slab BBQ $ $ $ $ Southern ,  BBQ  in  Wooten $$$$ 9012 Research Blvd Ste C4
The Slab Slider Trio at Slab BBQ is exactly what it claims to be: three barbecue sliders. They’re mini versions of their much larger sandwiches: the Notorious P.I.G. (pulled pork, mustard coleslaw), the Texas O.G. (brisket, pickles, onions), and the Chicken W.A. (smoked chicken, coleslaw). But just because they’re smaller doesn’t mean they don’t pack the same flavor punch. And at $12, it’s a perfect lunch for those of us afraid of a singular sandwich commitment. Why have just one sandwich when you can have three, each one better than the next?
Nicolai McCrary Lechonera El Pachango $ $ $ $ Latin ,  Puerto Rican  in  East Austin $$$$ 2701 East Martin Luther King Jr Blvd
Lechonera El Pachango specializes in roast pork - something they’ve proven to do exceptionally well in the short month that they’ve been operating out of a seemingly-abandoned gas station on East MLK. We weren’t sure what we wanted to try when we pulled up, so we decided to just go with our nose (and a little guidance from the owner). We ended up walking out with a plate of slow-roasted pork, rice with peas, and yuca with pickled red onions. The pork was juicy and topped with a sauce made from a bit of the marinade and lime that we couldn’t get enough of. The yuca con mojo comes out in a stewed-consistency, making it fork-tender and bursting with tangy flavor. And the rice was the perfect intake-vehicle for all of it.
Week Of July 27  Raphael Brion Hank’s $$$$ 5811 Berkman Dr
We’re working on a guide to takeout Happy Hours, and the Windsor Park neighborhood restaurant Hank’s has a very solid offering. Every day from 3-6:30pm, you can get very good and very inexpensive frozen palomas, frose, and frozen margaritas - they’re $5 each. Order online, and pick up at their convenient drive thru takeout window. Instead of racing home with your frozen cocktails - drive safe - it’s perhaps better to bring a cooler.
 Nicolai McCrary Bodhi Viet Veggie $ $ $ $ Vegetarian ,  Vietnamese ,  Vegan  in  North Austin $$$$ 2301 W Parmer Ln
Bodhi Viet is a small food truck in North Austin with a 100% vegan Vietnamese menu, offering everything from banh mi and pho, to Vietnamese coffee and boba tea. We really liked the banh mi we had here, stuffed with a spicy lemongrass seitan, and filled with fresh vegetables that they grow themselves. And the best part is that they’re only $3, so you can throw in an order of their pineapple curry that we also really enjoyed and still get away for under $10.
 Raphael Brion Vic & Al’s $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Cajun  in  Cherrywood ,  East Austin $$$$ 2406 Manor Road
Vic & Al’s is the new Cajun restaurant from the people that brought you the ever-popular Italian food trailer, Patrizi’s. We really like the po-boys, especially the super-tender blackened catfish and the Cochon De Lait, which has a sauce that’s almost like tonkotsu broth. The vacuum-packed, pre-made cocktails are also fun, including the very good made-for-summer Orange Drink (it’s very orange, but it also has tequila). Vic & Al’s is open for both takeout and delivery.
Week Of July 20  Raphael Brion Bufalina Deli $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Italian  in  East Austin $$$$ 500 San Marcos St #105
Bufalina Deli isn’t technically a new restaurant - instead it’s a simple lunch-and-dinner concept operating out of Wright Bros. Brew & Brew with a variety of salads and Italian sandwiches. On a recent takeout order, we really liked the summer tomato salad and the meatball parm hoagie. And since you’re ordering from The Brew & Brew, you can also get coffee, beer, and wine. Place your order online and pick it up at The Brew & Brew.
 Raphael Brion Ramen 512 $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Ramen  in  Central Austin ,  Wooten $$$$ 8023 Burnet Rd
You might have heard about Ramen 512 and their often sold out popups - yes, the ramen was that good. But now they’ve found a permanent home, inside the new “cloud kitchen” concept Kitchen United Mix. This place currently has three options: Hakata Classic (a pork tonkotsu), the BGO (the Hakata Classic with black garlic oil), and the Sunset Red (a spicy version of the Hakata Classic). We recently tried the BGO and the Sunset Red - the broth for each was super creamy and rich, as a pork tonkotsu should be, and the spice level on the Sunset Red was in fact actually spicy. You can order the ramen ready-to-eat, or you can cook the noodles at home, with very precise instructions. Takeout and delivery are available.
 Nicolai McCrary Lula Mae's Catering & BBQ $ $ $ $ BBQ  in  Cherrywood ,  East Austin $$$$ 3842 Airport Blvd
Despite the small space - Lula Mae’s is located in a small gas station off Airport and 38 ½ St. - this place manages to put out some really great barbecue, with side dishes that are tasty enough to order on their own. We really like the brisket and the pork chop - the latter of which is served as a giant, whole chop with a smoky exterior and a juicy center. You can get all of the meats by the pound, in combo-plates, or as a sandwich.
 Raphael Brion DipDipDip Tatsu-Ya $ $ $ $ Japanese  in  North Austin ,  North Loop $$$$ 7301 Burnet Rd
The dining room at DipDipDip Tatsu-Ya, the Japanese shabu-shabu place from the Ramen Tatsu-ya team, has been closed since the pandemic hit. But they did what people do these days, and pivoted. They transformed the restaurant into a takeout-only pop-up serving sandwiches that mash up the French dip and shabu-shabu, with excellent results. Our favorite is the beef sandwich with a wasabi ranch and the pork sandwich with kimchi and a curry cabbage slaw. For dipping, you can choose between an umami jus and a spicy miso (they recommend which dipping sauce to get for each sandwich). Make sure to get an order of the aptly named “Pow!tato” - a side dish with some of the most impossibly crispy smashed potato chunks we’ve ever had.

The Haitian food truck Kreyol Korner - off of North Lamar near Koenig - is usually open only on Saturdays, but it’s worth waiting for the weekend to roll around to try this place. Check their Facebook for the current menu and opening days and hours. Standouts from a recent meal include stuffed plantain cups and the super-tender stewed chicken combo. Also, make sure to ask for extra pikliz, the Haitian pickled vegetable relish.
 Nicolai McCrary Otherside Deli $$$$ 1104 W 34th St
Otherside Deli makes some of our favorite sandwiches in Austin, from cheesesteaks and meatball parm subs, to Italian subs and patty melts. But if you’re a first-timer at Otherside, chances are you’re here for the reuben - loaded up with their housemade pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and russian dressing, between two slices of grilled rye bread. Keep an eye on their Instagram for some fun specials, like the Outer Limit Fries that come loaded up with all of the typical reuben fillings, but on a bed of waffle fries. They’re currently accepting takeout orders from their shop near 34th and Lamar.
 Raphael Brion Ramen Tatsu-ya South Lamar $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Ramen  in  South Lamar $$$$ 1234 S Lamar Blvd
Ever since they originally opened, Ramen Tatsu-Ya has been vehemently anti-takeout. But then the pandemic hit, and they pivoted to takeout-only (and have stayed that way ever since). We recently picked up some of their ramen and it tasted just like how we remembered it at the restaurant. The toppings and noodles come in their own container (that way the noodles don’t get soggy), and the broth is packed in a deli pint container that’s thoroughly wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent in-car disasters. The instructions are clear: heat the broth, do not boil, then add the broth to the noodles and toppings. And with three locations in Austin - north, east, and south - ramen is never too far away.
Week Of July 6  Nicolai McCrary Island Fork - Caribbean Cuisine $$$$ 100 12th St
Island Fork in Pflugerville specializes in Caribbean food, like jerk chicken, curry goat, and escovitch fish (fried fish topped with pickled vegetables). They also have jerk-seasoned burgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as a menu of “rasta pastas” that feature creamy, Caribbean-inspired pasta sauces served over noodles and a variety of meats, like oxtail and jerk salmon. We usually get the jerk chicken here, served with coconut rice and grilled sweet plantains. Make sure to get a Caribbean soda as well - we like the Irish Moss and Ting.
 Nicolai McCrary Cuantos Tacos $ $ $ $ Tacos ,  Mexican  in  East Austin $$$$ 1108 East 12th St
Blink and you might miss this little food trailer on East 12th street, which has some of the best Mexico City-style street tacos in Austin right now. Cuantos Tacos has a tight menu of classics like suadero and beef cheeks, as well as a few less-common options, like buche and longaniza. Everything can be made as tacos or quesadillas, and at $2 and $5, respectively, the prices are affordable enough that you can probably try a few items off the menu. We like just about everything they carry, but our favorites are probably the champiñones quesadillas and the suadero tacos.

Order delivery  Week Of July 6  Nicolai McCrary Island Fork - Caribbean Cuisine $$$$ 100 12th St
