Prince Albert in 1841, by Charles Brocky (RCT)
And so we arrive at the Great Victorian Era, with a young Queen taking the throne in 1837. That was hardly likely to do more than set the tails of the coats of the courtiers aflutter. Her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840, however, brought a display of uniforms, mostly foreign.
The Prince Consort, in the twenty-one years of happiness that he brought to the Queen, is not remembered for any new styles in dress. He is instead immortalized by a watch chain: ‘Albert, a watch chain’ is in the Oxford English Dictionary. He seems to have very much liked velvet coats—possibly influenced by his fascination with medieval dress—it was a time of fancy-dress balls. He is reported to have worn scarlet boots whilst shooting.
— Sir Hardy Amies, The Englishman’s Suit
Prince Albert in an exotic pseudo-medieval costume isn't hard to find, as in this fancy dress ball portrait of 1842 (Mary Evans Picture Library):
But the 'Albert' watch chain is a little more ambiguous. Did the Prince Consort actually wear one in that style? The Dictionary of Fashion History by Valerie Cumming dates it to circa 1870 to mid-20th century (well after Albert, who died in 1861).
It is described as, "A heavy chain worn across the front of the waistcoat from one pocket to the opposite, with the watch at one end and a 'guard' (short rod of the metal) at the other; the chain passed through a buttonhole or, after ca. 1888, through a special 'chain-hole' in the waistcoat."
The royal family in 1843 or later, showing a (just barely) visible watch chain on the Prince Consort (National Portrait Gallery).
Many portraits of Albert sporting a watch chain later in life can be found, although it does not look as elaborate as some of the Albert watch chain jewellery styles for sale (which are all attributed to the Prince Consort, of course).

Something that amuses me between knitters and crocheters is this... almost humble nature each craft has about the other. I couldn't imagine how one would knit, and I know some of the basics - and yet, I have met so many knitters who say crochet is impossible, and yet I find it to be so simple. There's just something charming about when one recognizes just how much skill, effort, patience, and care go into a craft, and to be humbled by just how incredible human ingenuity and creativity are
