Bette Davis and Paul Lukas in Watch on the Rhine (Herman Shumlin, 1943)
Cast: Bette Davis, Paul Lukas, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Lucile Watson, Beulah Bondi, George Coulouris, Donald Woods, Henry Daniell. Screenplay: Dashiell Hammett, based on a play by Lillian Hellman. Cinematography: Merritt B. Gerstad, Hal Mohr. Art direction: Carl Jules Weyl. Film editing: Rudi Fehr. Music: Max Steiner.
Paul Lukas has the dubious distinction of being one of those Oscar anomalies, a longtime supporting player who suddenly gets thrust into a leading role that wins him the award for best actor. His competition included Gary Cooper in For Whom the Bell Tolls (Sam Wood), Walter Pidgeon in Madame Curie (Mervyn LeRoy), and Mickey Rooney in The Human Comedy (Clarence Brown). Oh, and Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca (Michael Curtiz), the one performance that everyone remembers. Lukas had plenty of opportunities to attract attention before: He had begun acting in movies in his native Hungary in 1915, and after coming to Hollywood had appeared in numerous films, playing Professor Bhaer opposite Katharine Hepburn in Little Women (George Cukor, 1933) and the sinister Dr. Hartz in The Lady Vanishes (Alfred Hitchcock, 1938), for example. He had played the role of Kurt Muller, the coordinator of resistance movements against the Nazis, in the original Broadway production of Watch on the Rhine in 1941, so he was a natural choice for the film version, though he landed the role only after the actor producer Hal Wallis wanted, Charles Boyer, was unavailable. As often happens, the Oscar was no step toward better roles in movies, and Lukas spent much of his later career on stage, though he continued to appear on film and TV up till his death in 1971. The play was written by Lillian Hellman, whose lover, Dashiell Hammett, did the screenplay with some input from her. Unfortunately, the result is less a movie than a sermon about doing one's patriotic duty in the struggle against fascism. It didn't help that Wallis hired the play's director, Herman Shumlin, for the film: Shumlin had never directed a movie and had to be assisted throughout by cinematographer Hal Mohr. He was also unable to rein in Bette Davis, who is miscast as the noble and dutiful wife and has a tendency to slip into some of her familiar and caricaturable mannerisms in the film.

28th Jan 2023 - Today I went to see Kate Duchêne at The Donmar Warehouse to watch the play Watch on the Rhine. It was absolutely amazing to actually see her live along with Patricia Hodge and all the other actors and actresses were absolutely brilliant.
I was in the same room as Miss Hardbroom and she was as magical as ever ❤️🥹. It was a matinee performance so I wasn’t sure there would be stage door appearances, however I had an amazing time.

New post --->
I feel like I’ve spent this winter season, just trying to avoid being somewhat ill. I was doing super well, until I overate on pizza and my digestive system decided to have a breakdown. Not fun. But thankfully this managed to pass before my 2 and a half day weekend as I had booked Friday afternoon off, specifically for theatre purposes. Let’s get into it!

genshin characters ranked on how hard it would be to get them to get in the robot and fight alien horrors or whatever they fight in nge
scara would get in the robot enthusiastically and you will need to forcefully get him out of the robot. he's still crying the whole time tho
diluc would get in the robot if after he got out his dad told him he's done good and ppl treated him like a hero
jean and ganyu would have robot overtime and collapse from exhaustion
alhaitham would not get in the robot in any circumstances. in fact, he has powerpoint presentation on why getting kids in the robots is inefficient war strategy and he's instigating a coup to replace the head pro-robot mad scientist
kaveh would tell alhaitham he's a horrible person for refusing and should shut up and get in the robot. he himself would get in the robot to prove his moral superiority and have a breakdown after
kaeya would get in the robot and pretend he's fine, while suffering internally and also realizing he's being exploited
childe would get in the robot willingly, but he would be distracted by wanton destruction and not actually achieve mission goals
furina already canonically was getting in the robot for 500 years
clorinde would get in the robot without complaints
navia would not get in the robot and would be organizing protest groups to get kids out of the robots
rizzley would get in the robot and be very casual about it, hed be like yeah, being in the robot is torture, but its not that bad relatively to what ppl being killed by the aliens are experiencing and someone has to do something. also, this is a rare situation if you make neuvi the alien angel horror, you can get them somewhere close to enemies to lovers
xiao has been living in the robot for last thousand years
yae miko would be the one gaslighting and manipulating kids to get in the robot
kujou sara is one of the kids yae miko personally sent in the robot when she had nothing to do with the robot to begin with
kazuha would not get in the robot. if he was forced to interact with the robot by like blackmailing him, thn after a day with kazuha, robot would get self-awareness and self-destruct to atone for being kids-torturing war-machine

They HAVE to give us Albedo's second SQ/ Venti's second SQ/Mondstadt Interlude quest or anything like that during the Natlan cycle where some shit happens again in Mondstadt, involving Durin and Albedo, and please even more Rhinedottir lore thankyou, and Dragonspine and. Yk. They gave us the prologue, they HAVE to give us the story after all those years. Or what was it for then.

I keep seeing people talk about the connection between Rhine and the shade of life, but I’ve always found this idea fun:
Rhine as the shade of life
Reincarnated from a (god? Are shades gods?) to a mortal who eventually gained control of their birthright, only to be rejected for their mortality
To her, the giving of life and taking it away are inextricably intertwined
But other people don’t see it that way

Der Ring des Nibelungen: Das Rheingold (Bayreuth, 1980): Reactions, Part II
let us continue!
okay this set change is cool
and the interlude is even cooler
down the…fire escape? did they have those in 1876?
that is not a helmet that is a chain mail veil
✨capitalism✨
…so it has a gold detector
same power structure, just reversed
oh it’s the panopticon
annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd there it is
this is the worst argument ever
just gotta say that so far, everyone in this is a really committed actor, which is something i ALWAYS appreciate in a production
i mean he IS pretty smart
fair enough!
okay that trick was actually REALLY cool
just a little guy!
GOT ‘IM!!!
and now to reverse the process from the last interlude
smart move, wotan
okay but COULD you actually???
first recorded instance of amazon same-day delivery
i mean, technically you only said you wanted to keep the ring
uh YEAH, because YOU were the one who took it??? we’re not talking about hypotheticals here
in fairness, it’s not like wotan is actually planning to give the ring back to the rhinemaidens
oops
i rest my case
AND THERE IT IS
i mean it was stolen from the RHINEMAIDENS, so it’s gotta go back to THEM really
this is a lovely musical moment
world’s highest-stakes game of jenga
i love how they’re allowing them to keep the wrapping on the gold lol
this guy is just trying his best and i respect that
oh THAT is some bs
uh oh
ooh boy
spooky times
but how often do opera characters actually do that
“fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine :/“
okay then
well that escalated quickly
nice effects!!!
he’s not impressed
and in they start to go…
…but the rhinemaidens are still upset…
…but they still go in anyway!
“this isn’t over yet, everyone”
and indeed it is not, but 1 part down, 3 to go, see y’all soon for my first-ever die walküre!!!

just watched special program, hype overall, my main points:
1.artifact creation with ability to choose substats is insane, i love it. we need another genshin killer to start up, so next time we can get artifact loadouts too
2.the chance to win 5 star is now 55% instead of 50%, which like.. good? but idk how impactful that 5% is tbh
3.obv fate points going from 2 to 1 on weapon banner is great, much less of a scam banner now
4. unpopular opinion, but i dont really care about standard 5 star selector. like i dont need any of standard cons on either account. i would literally take a cop girl constellation over any standard 5 star con. i wish we had 4 star selector in addition, where like idk, diluc lovers who couldn't get him for 3 years can finally get him, but everyone else could choose someone actually useful for their account
5.exploration looks so fun, i'm so excited! hoyo fucks up a lot, but area designers had never let me down
6.cave of murmurs is not khaenriah :( its a separate abyss themed underground. oh well. full khaenriah in version 7.0 hope asdfghjkl
