2:28pm, kensington music room

Most of the time, June can put the fact that Henry is an actual honest-to-god prince, fourth in line for the throne, and all-around big deal out of her mind and think of him as her friend, a fellow Austen-enthusiast, and her little brother’s boyfriend. Most of the time, June can set aside the fact that his sister is a literal princess and their brother is going to be king one day. Most of the time, June can look past the notion that Henry’s mom is going to become queen in her lifetime.

Sitting in goddamn Kensington Palace, in one of the best-appointed music rooms June’s ever seen, is not one of those times. 

Aside from Bea and Henry’s bedrooms, it’s the most casual room she’s seen so far. It’s suffused with a sense of family and laughter, unlike the more public spaces of the palace that seem to sag under stonework and tradition and a persistent phantom dampness. Even the guest suite she was shown to earlier feels coldly formal. But the lingering sense of chill falls away here. 

There’s half-drunk cups of tea on the side tables, notebooks scattered on the grand piano, Bea’s leather jacket slung over a squashy-looking armchair that wouldn’t look out of place in a thrift store in Austin. All of the instruments, while of obvious quality, look like they’ve been played often, and well-loved. While the collection of electric guitars is gorgeous, June’s attention is drawn toward the older acoustic guitar propped up in the far corner, half-hidden behind a fern.

She pulls it out and sits with it, strumming idly, echoes of lake water lapping at the dock in her ears. Her fingers pluck out simple chords, adjusting to the new instrument before the music swirling around her head takes over her hands. She’s flying through John Denver and Selena and Dolly Parton and Fleetwood Mac and Patsy Cline, lost in memories of easy summers at her dad’s lake house. But then June’s thinking about last time at the house, and Henry, and how devastated Alex was to wake up with him gone. How he’d been a shadow of himself for a week before taking off across the Atlantic to scream some sense into him. And then the leak, and the election, and suddenly there’s furious tears streaming down her face and she keeps harshly playing the same bit of Johnny Cash over and over, like a skipping record, the lyrics in her head drowning all other thoughts:

“June?”

And the flames went higher

“June?”

“June!”

And the flames went—

Bea pulls the guitar out of June’s hands and it’s all June can do to not curl up in a ball or let loose a scream—anything to mitigate the swirling anger that she’s been shoving down for weeks. Her hands ball into fists as she half-sobs, trying to get a hold of herself but then, Bea’s hands are covering hers and June lifts her blurry gaze to Bea’s face.

“Just let it out, love, you look like you need it.”

And June tips forward and buries a scream in Bea’s shoulder, lets Bea pull her closer and cage her in as the scream turns to sobs. It takes a long time for June to calm down again, fighting for each gasping breath while Bea rubs her back and murmurs soothing nonsense. Eventually she calms down enough to sit up properly again and wipes her face with the cuff of her sweater.

“S-sorry about that, Bea. I just—”

“If you think you’re the only person who’s had a breakdown in this room, you’re sorely mistaken,” Bea says. “Christ knows I’ve had more than my own fair share. But my sponsor says they’re good for me so…”

June sits with that a moment then—

“I’m just still so angry.”

“About the leak?”

June nods. “About all of the shit they dealt with. That they’re still dealing with. And like, officially, everything’s fine now, right? My mom won and Richards is going to be punished and Alex and Henry are happy but—”

“They shouldn’t have had to deal with that in the first place,” Bea finishes grimly. “And because everything’s “fine” now, we have to be fine, too.”

“Yeah. Like I just feel like screaming at the injustice of it all, but no one would listen. ‘They got their happy ending, so can’t we just move on?’” June mocks. “I saw some rando post that on Twitter this morning and couldn’t get it out of my head.”

“Maddening, isn’t it?”

“Understatement of the century.”

“Next time, text me. Odds are I’m feeling the same way.”

June does grin at that. Bea’s probably the only other person who gets what it’s like being the older sister to such a potent force for good in the world. Who gets wanting to fight anyone and anything that threatens her brother’s happiness.

These Players Are The X-Factors In The 2023 NBA Playoffs

The NBA regular season standing reveal how this year’s playoff race will be closer than ever, with just 3 wins separating 4th and 8th place in the Western Conference.

With margins this close, many of the outcomes of these games are going to be swung by moments and by role players, and how far a team’s supporting can push thier individual performances.

This may be true for every team in the post season, but some teams are going to need bigger contributions from their guys than others, and this is a comprehensive list of the players whose performances will have the biggest implications, outside the perfomance of the actual leading scorers.

1. Xavier Tillman Sr

With the injuries to the Grizzlies frontcourt (Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke), there will be a need for Grizzlies head coach, Taylor Jenkins. to find reliable pieces to plug that void.

Up to now, Jenkins has somewhat mitigated the problem through Xavier Tilman, who up to this point, has seen hism given more opportunities and Tilman has started 29 games and he averages about 19.3 minutes per game.

By playing Tilman alongside Jaren Jackson, Jenkins has found a front court pairing that gives him somewhat of a interrior defensive presence, and should he not be able to rely on Tilman, Jenkins will likely have to rely on playing smaller lineups with Desmond Bane at powerforward.

So much of how the Grizzlies backup powerforward performs will have a ripple effect on Memphis’ options as far as lineups and rotations.

2. Khris Middleton

This will be Khris Middleton’s 1st NBA playoff run since the Bucks won the title two years ago and I am not going to bother to factor in how many points he’s averaged because a lot of Middleton’s 2022/23 stats are watered down.

Hence why I am still concerned that Bucks head coach, Mike Budenholzer kept him out of the starting lineup for so long, and basically ran him with the bench unit, and I wonder what effect that had on Middleton because getting less time in lineups alongside Jrue, Giannis and Brook. 

When you look at a Khris Middleton stat line, the first things you want to see are points and efficiency, and while that’s understandable, I think the other thing to watch with Middleton is his pick’n’roll defense because that’s what 1-on-1 scorers do when they face him, and he’s gotta get a handle on it, or be smarter before allowing himslef to switch on to those guys.

I for one, cannot think of a single 2nd star, that has more on his plate in 2023, than Khris Middleton.

3. Deandre Ayton

It’s funny how Kevin Durant joins the Phoenix Suns and his biggest influence or effect, on the team, seems to be his effect on Deandre Ayton.

It’s been tough-sledding for Ayton and while he has gotten a new contract since the 2021 finals, it has come with added scrutiny and a more strained relationship with head coach, Monty Williams. 

Besides what the perception of Ayton may be, both within and outside the Suns organization, he’s in a unique spot to take full advantage of the kind of space he will have in the paint now that Durant is in Phoenix, and I think Ayton knows it.

A motivated Deandre Ayton can easily replicate what he was able to do against the Denver Nuggets in 2021. 

It comes down to the reality that if you look at all the other Western Conference teams, none of them, outside of Denver with Jokic and maybe Memphis with Steven Adams and Jaren Jackson, have got bigs that can match up with Ayton.

He may have dealt with being called out for a lack of desire but I think Deandre recognises how he can be one of the big reasons the Suns get back to a finals. 

4. Jamal Murray And Michael Porter Jr

Denver Nuggets fans have long since talked up the return of Jamal Murray and how that happening would finally allow the Nuggets to reach thier full potetial as Western Conference front runners, and they may very well have been right about that.  

Michael Porter Jr’s case is slightly more complex.

It was thought that the Denver Nuggets had gotten the biggest steal in the 2018 draft when they got Porter Jr, and that still may very well be true, the problem is that when a young player is drafted to a team that already has star offensive players like Murray and Jokic. So Porter Jr hasn’t really had to push his game, the way he would have had if he had been drafted by any almost any other team in the league. 

Murray is getting back to health but the reality is, the Nuggets need him to play like he did in the bubble back in 2020.

The combined scoring of these two auxillary scorers will sway the direction of the Nuggets playoff hopes and each will have thier own hangups/obstacles to to overcome in this post season.

5. The Entire Warriors Front Court

A lot of things are still the same on this team. Steph is still making crazy shots, Klay Thompson is back to his best, Jordan Poole is still among the top 6th men in the league, and they still have Gary Paton, Andrew Wiggins, plus the addition of Donte DiVencenzo.

What has changed is the commitment to defense, and that comes down to Draymond Green, Kevon Looney, Jason Kuminga and Jamychal Green.

While the Warriors have done well to get themselves to top 6 seed, given how thier season started, but there is nothing else they can do, other than to increase thier frontcourt production and thier collective defense.

6. Isaac Okoro and Lamar Stevens

I’m going to keep a keen eye on this wing-forward pairing of the Cavaliers, because these guys actually have the potential to blow the lid off of the Cavs’ playoff ceiling.

That is, provided that they can make thier jump shots.

Clevelands guards scorers and the need for opposing defenses to double-team at least one of them, essentially means that the Cavs auxillary players are going to get a lot of wide open looks, and that means Okoro and Stevens need to focus on splashing their jumpers.

Now, I really have to wonder if Cavs head coach, JB Bickerstaff will commit to having these guys together in the lineup because Okoro averages 36.3% from 3 and Stevens is at 31.6% from the same distance. Bickerstaff has Caris Levert on the bench averaging 39.3% from 3 but they Cavs have not really unleashed the beast that is Caris yet.

It’s a conundrum and while putting Evan Mobley and Jared Allen together in the lineups has it’s perks because of what they do defensively, at some point they have to go to smaller lineups, create space and make jumpers.

Health officials thought (correctly) that fresh air would ward off airborne diseases; then as now, cities rushed to move activities outdoors, from schools to courtrooms. When winter came, the need for fresh air didn’t abate. According to Holohan’s research, the Board of Health in New York City ordered that windows should remain open to provide ventilation, even in cold weather. In response, engineers began devising heating systems with this extreme use case in mind. Steam heating and radiators were designed to heat buildings on the coldest day of the year with all the windows open. Anybody who’s thrown their windows open in January, when their apartment is stifling, is, in an odd way, replicating what engineers hoped would happen a century ago.

The memories of the flu pandemic lingered. Engineering books from the 1920s often mentioned this need to design heating systems, notably the boilers and radiators, to operate with all windows open, a requirement of the “fresh air movement,” Holohan says. This health crusade, which has its roots in the post-Civil War era, saw fresh air as a necessity for good health; adherents believed that rooms with closed windows and tight airflow meant that others would breathe in your vapors and catch disease. The theory originated before modern germ theory, at a time when tuberculosis was a significant health threat. “They called unventilated air the ‘national poison,’” Holohan says.  A key proponent of the idea was Lewis Leeds, a health inspector for Union Army field hospitals who came to the conclusion that “vitiated,” or spoiled, air was the cause of the many diseases. The “spent breath” of the occupants of poorly ventilated homes contributed to 40% of the deaths in the country, he claimed, and often said “man’s own breath is his greatest enemy.” He would spend decades promoting the cause, designing ventilation schemes for buildings, penning a 1869 book, Leeds on Ventilation, and lecturing across the country. He explained his ideas with the aid of a “magic lantern” projector — think old-timey Powerpoint presentations. He’d show slides of a family in their drawing room, then add a slide showing red air coming out of the father’s mouth. The child crawling on the floor would eventually fall over. It “scared people to death,” Holohan says. 

Leeds was joined in his fervent ventilation campaign by author Harriet Beecher Stowe, of Uncle Tom’s Cabin fame. With her sister, Catherine, Stowe would coauthor a 1869 book, The American Woman’s Home, that claimed “tight sleeping-rooms, and close, air-tight stoves, are now starving and poisoning more than one half of this nation.” It also introduced terrifying scenarios to shock American readers into action, such as this passage about the impact of vitiated air on a child: 

Little Jim, who, fresh from his afternoon’s ramble in the fields, last evening said his prayers dutifully, and lay down to sleep in a most Christian frame, this morning sits up in bed with his hair bristling with crossness, strikes at his nurse, and declares he won't say his prayers—that he don't want to be good. The simple difference is, that the child, having slept in a close box of a room, his brain all night fed by poison, is in a mild state of moral insanity. 

These ideas would become more formally accepted by architects and engineers during the beginning years of the 20th century. The 1901 New York State Tenement House Act mandated that every room have an outdoor facing window. New York City Health Commissioner Royal Copeland, who, as a U.S. senator in the 1920s proposed redesigning the Senate Chamber to deal with deadly, stale air, would praise the tenement laws as having a significant impact during the flu pandemic. 

By the time the Spanish Flu hit, the maxims of the fresh air movement had become popular enough to impact building designs. The toll of the pandemic solidified this thinking, says Holohan. Having robust steam boilers that could keep apartments and dwellings comfortable with open windows became standard in New York City, as well as other northern cities in cold climates, such as Detroit, Chicago, Denver, Boston and Philadelphia.

The pandemic abated in 1920 but these standards had become locked into place. The architecture firm KPF found that>nearly 75% of Manhattan’s existing square footage was built between 1900 and 1930. And since steam heat systems are incredibly durable, they’ve lasted for generations.  

In the ensuing decades, shifts in building practice and fuel usage made the problem of over-indexed steam heat worse. The type of fuel used to heat the steam boilers changed, from coal to heating oil to natural gas, and during the changeover, Holohan says, they didn’t properly resize boilers or systematically change design standards to account for the changing power source; replacement boilers were kept big to err on the side of caution. Better windows, especially double-pane varieties, would provide the benefit of better insulation and less heat loss, but only served to lock in the impact of overly aggressive radiators. (If you own an old radiator-equipped house, you might have noticed how overpoweringly effective they can be after you replace leaky older windows with more well-insulated modern replacements.) 

By the 1930s, Holohan says, a few common remedies to mitigate excessive radiator heat came into practice that last to this day. Researchers at the National Bureau of Standards found that if radiators were painted with a special kind of bronzing paint — specifically, the silver tone found in many radiators today — it would reduce some of the heat transfer. Same goes with “radiator cozies,” knitted covers sometimes placed over the ribs of radiator pipes. They have the added benefit of protecting kids from getting burned, but one reason they became commonplace was as a way to blunt excess heat. 

Roughly 80%  of residential buildings in NYC are still heated by steam, and surveys with tenants found that 70 % are chronically overheated in winter, according to Demystifying Steam, a 2019 report by the Urban Green Council. The durability of steam “has locked into place technical limitations of a century ago, ” the report noted; their role as disease-fighters forgotten, radiators are now seen as energy-sucking dinosaurs. “Many tenants open windows for relief, even on the coldest days,” the report found, “but steam systems are so unbalanced that other residents in these same buildings don’t receive enough heat.”

Steam’s grip on the city’s building stock has made the challenge of meeting environmental goals much harder, in effect overheating more than merely the buildings in which they operate. According to John Mandyck, CEO of the Urban Green Council, 70% of the climate emissions in New York City are generated by buildings, with the biggest share from the fossil fuels used for heat and hot water in large, multifamily buildings.

Steam might get a bad rap now, but Holohan notes that its inefficiencies can be traced to poor maintenance and long out-of-date building codes. (It’s not supposed to clank either.) “The banging and clanging wasn’t normal,” he says. “Steam heat was fast and silent when it was first installed. When it’s properly tended, it can be an efficient way to heat. Most people just don’t know how to do it right.” 

As a Covid-haunted winter looms, residents of steam-heated buildings may get another opportunity to crank their radiators up and put them to their intended use. Holohan says he’s bemused to see his field of expertise reemerge in connection with the current pandemic, as ventilation is being again promoted as a key strategy to cut infection. 

“I’ve been talking about this for like 30 years or more,” he says. “And suddenly I’m living it.”

A Glimpse of Another Kind of Economy

Recently in a post about consumerism—The Problem of Consumerism—I touched upon the economics of consumerism and I suggested that, since all advanced industrialized economies are based on consumerism, with consumer products, consumer spending, and consumer debt playing a large role in the economy, we don’t even know what a modern non-consumerist economy would look like. Because of recent shutdowns of large swathes of the economies of advanced industrialized nation-states due to the COVID-19 panic, we have been granted a glimpse of a very different kind of economy, and the different kinds of behaviors to be observed in different economic circumstances.

As offices shut their doors and sent workers away to work from home, and then an increasing number of business ceased most of their operations, laying off workers, and children were sent home from school, people found themselves forcibly idled. In Oregon, we had some beautifully sunny early spring days, and people were out in droves, walking their dogs and engaging in family recreation. I have never before seen so many happy children and happy dogs, innocent of why their family is not away at work but is instead home and available. The previous weekend the weather was particularly nice, and large numbers of people left the city to go to the coast. Local mullet-wrapper Willamette Week had this to say:

 “After throngs of visitors flocked to trails and beaches this weekend despite Brown’s repeated calls for residents to stay at home, the entire Oregon State Parks system is closing to the public. Same goes for Multnomah Falls. The northern Oregon Coast has closed its hotels, and the town of Seaside closed its beach.”   

This kind of unintended recreation is not only happening in Oregon. Youtuber Carl Benjamin made a video about this, Coronavirus is Giving Everyone What They Wanted, making similar observations about England.  

The shutdowns that have been effected specifically exempt essential industries. That means that, despite the panic buying, store shelves are being regularly re-stocked. Food is plentiful; the agricultural industry has not been shut down, nor the transportation industry that moves goods from farms to grocery stores. Utilities continue to function, so that electricity, communications, water, and sewer are working. If there were hunger or blackouts, people would become restive, and eventually they would riot, but they have enough to eat, they have hot showers and clean clothes, and they have the internet to supply them with news and entertainment. You can even get take out from your favorite restaurant, though you have to eat it at home.

Homelife, then, long neglected by the gradual growth of institutions utterly indifferent to it, is flourishing. The primary goal of the shutdowns is the curtailment of social gatherings, which could speed the spread of COVID-19. With social gatherings curtailed, only homelife remains.

Cities are visibly quiet, as can be seen in satellite photographs: Coronavirus slowdown in US seen from space. A photograph was circulating on social media of mountain lions prowling a suburb in Denver, so quiet had it become that, with the retreat of human beings, nature and the wild return with astonishing rapidity. The curtailment of industry has had unintended effects of mitigating pollution. Photographs have shown the water in the canals of Venice running clear, and the return of swans (cf. Venice canals are crystal clear after coronavirus lockdown in Italy by Hannah Sparks).

Some of the observations of pollution mitigation have taken an angry turn by saying, “Humans are the disease, coronavirus is the cure” and variations thereof. This has, in turn, already inspired a backlash calling these observations “misanthropic.” Some of them certainly are, but to dismiss the obvious evidence that shutting down non-essential industries makes the planet noticeably cleaner within days is to completely miss the point. It is possible for seven billion human beings to live on Earth and also to have clear skies, clean water, and wildlife. These are not misanthropic observations; on the contrary, human life is, or would be, greatly improved by a planet with dependably clear skies, clean water, and wildlife.  

What the COVID-19 shut downs have done, unintentionally, is to give us a glimpse of an entirely different kind of economy in which essential services continue to function, but the bloat of consumerism is cut down to its proper size. Ultimately, we do not want to curtail social gatherings, and we do not want to close down state parks and public beaches. We want social gatherings to flourish, and for natural places to be open to the public for all to enjoy, and we can have these things once again after the pandemic has run its course. We can re-open restaurants, allow parties and concerts to proceed, and see social life return to normal. Everyone wants this, and we all understand that it will take time. But will we have learned the unintended lesson of shutting down the greater part of the non-essential economy?

There is already a significant amount of speculation on how the COVID-19 panic will influence life in the future, that changes put in place during the pandemic will lead to a “new normal,” and that things will never be exactly the same again. The convergence of social distancing, working from home, and technologically-enabled isolation could issue in a nightmarish dystopia in which the curtailment of social gatherings becomes institutionalized, to the detriment of us all (cf. Why social distancing might last for some time by Abigail Beall). On the other hand, we might also learn the lesson that most people who work in an office do not need to commute to an office building every day, diverting a large part of the economy into personal transportation and consuming enormous quantities of gasoline, that remote work and remote learning can be effective, and that alternative arrangements are possible and, in some cases, preferable.

For my part, the lesson I hope will be learned from the great pandemic of 2020 (though I don’t think it at all likely) is that there is the possibility of an economy in technologically advanced nation-states in which we can maintain essential industries even while minimizing if not shaming the industries of consumerism, but in which the blandishments of consumerism will not be missed because family life and social life are enjoyed in the context of cleaner, quieter cities and natural spaces in which wildlife thrives. Before the great shut down, we didn’t really know what this would look like; now we do. Shutting down the consumer-driven economy would be a win-win for both humanity and our homeworld.

Corporations that flouted environmental regulations and spewed pollutants into the air and dumped them into waterways will not be required to pay the fines they agreed to during the pandemic, according to The Guardian.

The forbearance of payments totals $56 million from ten corporations for a variety of violations across the country, including polluting air and water in already vulnerable communities, like East Chicago, Indiana, according to legal proceedings.

The companies agreed to settlements with the U.S. government that forced them to pay fines without admitting liability. However, the U.S. Department of Justice advised most of the companies of extensions in letters that were obtained by the government watchdog group Accountable.US via public records requests, as The Guardian reported.

The Department of Justice said the move is intended to "mitigate the financial impact" of the coronavirus. However, enforcement attorneys who have spent years targeting the companies expressed shock over the blanket policy, according to The Hill.

"It's unprecedented in how broad it is," said Francis Lyons, a partner with Schiff Hardin LLP who previously worked on environmental enforcement issues at the Justice Department, to The Hill. "I think this policy goes beyond what is necessary under the circumstances."

In one example that The Guardian provided, KP Kauffman, a Denver-based oil and gas company, has spent $200,000 lobbying the EPA in 2019 and 2020. It also hosted a meeting with oil executives and Donald Trump in 2016. Now, the company has stopped paying the fines it agreed to for allegedly violating air pollution laws when the company emitted smog-forming compounds in the Denver-Julesburg Basin, an area that wasn't meeting smog standards.

So, you moved from a cushy climate to a region with significant snow and this is your first real winter?

Moving from a climate where it never snows to a climate with a lot of snow can be daunting, particularly for your first year of home ownership in such a region.  Snow isn't bad.  It just requires a certain level of awareness and skill to deal with it.  This article isn't meant for someone who's lived in snowy areas for a while.  It is meant for snow first-timers (and even second-timers too).  This article is just a starting point.  The following suggestions are just opinion.  Each person is response to make sure they are always acting in a safe manner regardless to any opinions expressed in this or any article. Owning a home, where you have manage snow on your own, presents a list of problems that need solutions.  For example, if you have a driveway and sidewalks, you are responsible for keeping those clear of snow, no matter how often it falls or how much accumulates.  These problems require various tools for their solutions.  Not all of us can have our own personal "Mr. Plow". As someone who moved from the West Coast to New England, I quickly learned what was needed.  New England is particularly rough in Winter.  I researched the potential problems and solutions.  I will share my experiences by suggesting tools that I found to be helpful for dealing with snow seasons.  I will focus on what I found to be successful, and not dwell too much on failed or ineffective methods.  (Please see my FTC 16 CRF Part 255 notice in the right pane in reference to any affiliate links found this article. Snow Removal - Ground Level

There are various tiers of equipment that can move snow around, from a snow blower to a simple shovel.  However, a snow blower is typically overkill for most snowy days, and useless for the worse of days.  Also, it wouldn't be a good idea to use snow blowers on certain surfaces, such as a wood deck.  Snow blowers are most efficient for a particular amount of snow accumulation, or if you have a particularly large property.  For homes that I've owned, I never found snow blowers to be necessary.  To clear driveways and sidewalks, a shovel with a little elbow grease is typically the most versatile solution.  There are a lot of options for shovels. First, don't use a shovel that isn't specifically designed for snow shovelling.  Using the wrong type of shovel will make your job a lot harder than it needs to be.  Second, I don't recommend using a metal snow shovel.  You may be tempted to think that metal is more reliable, but it's actually the less effective option in my experience. Instead, get a non-metal snow shovel with a metal wear strip.  In fact, get two.  Two?  Yes.  One shovel with a wide "combo" or "shovel/pusher" blade and one shovel with a narrower blade.  The wide-bladed shovel will allow you to push and scoop a significant amount of snow very quickly and with much less effort; kind of like a bulldozer. This wide-blade shovel is your primary tool.  The shovel with a narrower blade will be useful when you need to move piles of snow but still need to do a little bulldozing too.

Snow Removal - Roof

Some regions with a lot of snow, such as Denver, don't keep the snow around very long.  So, although you may need to shovel throughout the season, that's about it.  However, New England is different.  Snow hangs around all Winter.  That's a problem for roofs.  As snow sits on your roof, the heat from your home will partially melt it from the bottom, and that melted snow freezes back into hard ice.  This forms something called ice dams. Exterior signs of ice dams are icicles.  Interior signs of ice dams are leaks from the roof onto your ceiling and into your home.  To avoid the formation of ice dams, snow should be removed from the lowest 3 to 6 feet of your roof, above the gutter.  This is where ice dams will typically form, so removal of snow from this area is important.  The tool I used to remove rooftop snow was the roof rake.  The roof rake I used was the 21-foot Garelick.  However, newer products may be better.  Be sure to check customer reviews for current products that may be better. There are powered or chemical options too.  Every circumstance is different, so these passive options may be necessary for various reasons.

Ice on the ground

To remove ice on the ground or not?  That's a question you'll have to answer for yourself.  Arguments can be made as the necessity of ice removal, or not.  For me, safety is a concern.  Removal of ice from paths and driveways creates the safest scenario.  Slipping on ice is dangerous and very unpleasant.  If you quickly remove snow, you can avoid most ice accumulation on walkable/drivable areas.  However, sometimes ice will just form on your paved areas regardless to the preventative actions you take. There are a lot of options to chemically remove ice on the ground. The most basic is rock salt.  Other chemicals claim to work better.  Others claim to be environmentally-friendly.  There are even supposed pet-safe products.  Any product you choose should work well enough when the ice is thin.  However, don't rely on chemicals if you have an inch of ice.  In that event, you'll need to hack at the ice.  I don't really have advice as to the best ice-hacking tool because no tool seemed particularly efficient to me.  You just have to hack at the ice until you can pry it off. Oh, don't be tempted to take shortcuts, like hot water.  Hot water doesn't stay hot for long when poured onto frozen ground.  You'll likely just end up making more ice. Can you preemptively apply salt or other chemicals before snowfall?  Sure.  In light to moderate conditions, this will work well.  However, if 3 feet of snow falls overnight, don't expect a clear walkway when you wake up.  Expect 3 feet deep snow with a crusty layer at the bottom.

Your Car

Even if you park your car in a garage or carport, you'll still likely need to drive it at some point during a snowy day. You'll need methods to remove snow and ice from your car's windows, hood and roof.  Window scrapers are necessary, even if you have a fancy windshield cover.  Keep at least one window scraper in your car at all times during late fall to early spring.

Driving in bad conditions

Now, when it comes to actually driving in bad conditions, different cars have different requirements. If you have a front wheel drive (FWD) car, your car is not well-balanced between front and back, but your car's heaviest point (the engine) is solidly over your drive wheels.  This means you'll be less likely to lose traction in bad conditions *IF* you know how to handle your car in those conditions.  The problem is that many FWD drivers operate their car in the same fashion as if it was a rear wheel drive car.  This means the car can get squirrely, even when driving fairly straight.  I'm not going to go into driving basics, but do your research and learn as much as you can about the correct way to drive with a FWD car in bad conditions. If you have a rear wheel drive (RWD) car, your car is also not well-balanced between the front and back.  However, the heaviest point (the engine) is not over your drive wheels.  This means you may have trouble getting traction on your drive wheels.  You may not be "squirrely", but you may spin your tires when trying to get up a gentle snow-covered hill.  To mitigate this limitation, use bags of sand or other well distributed weight over your rear tires within your trunk.  Bags of sand are good because they won't shift around a lot.  Even something as little as 50 pounds over each tire can help.  200 pounds over each tire would be ideal, particularly if you have a big engine.  With weight over my rear wheels, I found my car to be very stable and reliable. I remember several occasions in bad conditions where other cars (both rear and front wheel drive) spun-out around me while I was able to drive without any significant trouble. All wheel drive (AWD) is better.  AWD cars don't have the limitations of RWD and FWD cars.  However, that doesn't mean you don't have to be careful.  If you hit ice (particularly when going downhill or at the wrong speed), your car's wheel configuration won't matter that much.  Always use caution when driving in bad conditions.  Better yet, don't drive in bad conditions, if possible.

Snow Tires

Regardless to your car's drive type, consider getting a full set of snow tires if you live in New England or similar climates.  I found Blizzak snow tires to be very reliable for my needs. For ease of use, I purchased a whole separate set of rims just for my snow tires.  Since I had my snow tires mounted on their own rims, tire shops or the dealer usually switched out my tires from all-season to snow tires (and back again) for free as part of routine checks or tire rotations. In Denver, snow tires don't seem necessary since snow doesn't hang around for very long.  Research to see if snow tires are recommended for your area before making the investment.

Snow Boots

Yup, just like your car, you'll need something to make you more stable in the snow.  Get one or more pairs of snow boots.  Just having waterproof shoes or hightops will not be enough. You'll need full-fledged snow boots. Snow boots will allow you to do all the stuff previously mentioned in this article, like shovelling snow.  Seriously, don't try to shovel snow with your street shoes.

Anything else?

Yup, I can go on about such things like clothes to consider, or what to do when the power goes out.  However, there's already enough here to make you think twice about moving to a snowy climate.  So, perhaps I'll cover those things another time.  Overall, where you can prevent issues, do so. Always use caution when outside in bad weather, even if you are just walking your dog.  Good luck!
