I love the ocean and I really wanna learn more about my favorite sea creatures and beyond but I have no idea how to get started. Are there documentaries or shows your recommend? How do you go about doing research for fun (the American school system has failed me, go figure)? How do you even remember it all? I crave to learn but where I could possibly start is as vast as the ocean itself.

What a fun question! It is admittedly a bit difficult to go back to the beginning of my ocean-learning days, since I can't remember a time when I wasn't super into water and aquatic things, but I'll try! I think I started learning about oceans through books, I'd read and borrow a lot of fish and marine biology books at the library. I think they're the very best place to look to at first if you struggle with the paralysis of having too many things to do or too many places to look from! Libraries are really good sources of information, but unlike the internet, the resources are finite in some way, they're on physical paper, and tied to the place itself (until you take them home of course!), which at least to me makes it easier to start looking for what I want to know more about. Libraries make it easier for me to read things too, I get very distracted at home. Only when I am in the peace and quiet in between the bookshelves can I focus!

Another place that was no doubt a source of learning for me was natural history museums and aquariums. I was (..am) obsessed with the Finnish Museum of Natural History specifically, it was a must-visit every time we went to the capital city area up until the pandemic. Aquariums we went to less so, but the education they provide there is a gem! Sometimes you can even talk to an employee if you're lucky enough and learn extra bits of information about things. Not always free like libraries, but worth a shot if you get the opportunities to visit.

I've also watched and still watch marine/freshwater life documentaries and other educational shows! Usually I'd opportunistically go and watch them whenever one popped up on the TV, instead of going out to find them myself. This, and the fact that it's been many years since I saw some, I can't recall many of the names of the documentaries I've seen! There were some about dolphins and their fascinating behaviour and hunting habits, and this cool documentary series that divided its episodes into two parts with pure opposite climates and cultures with opposite lifestyles, but I can't seem to find the ones I'm thinking of!!! ...Ah, well. I can recommend you Planet Earth (2006), The Blue Planet (2001) and Blue Planet II (2017) from BBC, and Life on Our Planet (2023) which I'm currently watching on Netflix! Secrets of the Whales (2021) from National Geographic I didn't quite finish but it was still quite interesting, focuses on four species of whales.

As for doing my research... well, once I was old enough to get on the internet and I was super duper fixated on a specific species of animal or a group of animals, I'd do this thing where I look up the animal's name and slowly start going through every website that popped up, in order, bookmarking the websites with the most or most interesting information. I still do it. I don't know if it's the "correct" way, could there even be a correct way..? I doubt it, and it does give you many sources to reference with each other! I also like to look through videos of these animals, but, that's probably a given. If you're looking for fish info specifically, I like to fall back on FishBase, SeriouslyFish and A-Z Animals when I'm unsure about something (besides checking multiple sources), as far as I know they're trustworthy.

When it comes to remembering, I unfortunately cannot offer you any tips! I am fortunate in that I have naturally good memory and absorb information with relative ease, so I don't really have any tips for remembering things... though I do like to sort large batches of information into charts, like how I did when I was learning to take care of my shrimp! I looked through several websites and collected the suggested parameters from each, and compared them with each other. I did the same thing when I was making my informational comic about bigfin squids, I collected the depths and places in which squids were spotted in into charts. Perhaps that is helpful in some way!

I know that in our facility, every day our home was full of life, filled with culture. Let me begin how life is now for these residents during this most challenging time. I am more than certain that other homes across the country are facing the same circumstances. During this pandemic, we are mandated to not allow visitors, unless under extreme circumstances. Our residents loss their sense of routine – just like us. Almost every morning, we had church services, and now services are cancelled – which is absolutely disheartening, as these residents need their push of faith more than ever now. Believe it or not, these residents had a day full of scheduled activities. From day to evening, there was always something going on the home and outside to keep them preoccupied. Most importantly, they were connected with others. Residents did have a social life prior to this pandemic. Outdoor activities included, but not limited to: excursions to the ROM, Ripley’s aquarium, grocery run, greenhouse trip, mall excursion, etc. And they also had plenty of indoor activities, such as cooking in the kitchen centre, karaoke, gardening, mani/pedi, paint nights, bingo, outside vendor entertainment etc. Currently, during this pandemic, sadly there are limited to only their room, to practice social distancing, as this is the most effective way to decrease the spread of the virus. As most homes across the GTA have confirmed cases of Covid-19, we have no choice but to do what must be done in order to minimize the spread throughout the home – even it means to what appears to be like imprisoning our residents. Again, despite residing in an LTC home, these residents are locked down and are only remaining on their floors, not even permitted to lounge in the lobby – bear in mind, the daily sight of only the hallways and their bedroom walls, may be the last memories they have. This pandemic not only had an impact on their social life, but more importantly, their mental health. They have lost their daily congregation, social meetings, and even their friends from different floors. Most of our residents already have mental health challenges, and the measures taken to limit the spread of this virus, may worsen their mental health. The pandemic has had an impact on staffing in Long Term Care homes. Some employees are temporarily taking a leave for various reasons. Child care, health risk, covid positive, stranded in another country, or simply just ran and fed into their fears. Almost every home are extremely understaffed, which sadly means comprised care for the residents. I honestly hurt to share this information because it is extremely disheartening, but it is the ugly truth. All residents cannot be fed in the dining room, which means they need to be fed in their rooms, which then would take the heroes longer to have each resident fed. We also had plenty of family members (pre-pandemic life), who would come in to help with feedings. I hate to dishearten you further, but understaffing conditions, also may lead to residents remaining in their adult diapers longer than usual. And it is not the fault of the heroes that are caring for these residents, it is the lack of additional help. However, good news is, other agencies and ministries have currently jumped in to aid, so we hope this issue gets resolved soon. There should be an additional staff for each floor for each shift as more help become available. The residents are not the only ones suffering. It is also the front line workers, they’re working double, even on their only days off. Pre-pandemic, every day we had multiple sick calls and I am amazed to see that those have sick calls have decreased dramatically! This truly showcases how much our heroes care for one another and do not want to leave their team behind to combat the frontlines alone. The staff that work on the fortunate non-covid floors have also displayed such inspiring teamwork. Full time staff are working double or on their days off and even hours they are not accustomed to, just to minimize the risk of this disease from spreading floor to floor. This will prevent having to ask another staff that worked from an outbreak floor to a non-outbreak floor. I would also like to discuss the impact this pandemic has on the mental health of our heroes. There are plenty of distraught and anxious families that call daily and numerous times a day. Some family members become rude and disrespectful and others are pleasant but share their emotional distress and anxieties. During chaotic days, between trying to feed residents, provide medication etc this can get emotionally heavy to bare. Some of our heroes have also chosen to use the option of hotel lodging, to limit the risk of spreading the disease to their families, to help keep their loved ones safe. From being physically exhausted to mentally drained, they enter the paid hotel life. It is not glamorous as one may think. Since these are covid exposed guests, housekeeping or laundry service are not provided. The worst of it all is, they do not get to be with their families, their main source of support. However, at least they can give themselves the peace of mind that their families are not at risk. That’s one good outcome they have control over - protecting their peace. Every staff from every department of this building are stepping out of their role every single day. They truly motivate and inspire me to be here for them every step of the way. Despite my own mental health challenges, I choose to do my part so that another hero does not have to step out of their role just to fill mine.  I am so proud to be a part of this team and happy to be able to witness these heroes dig deep into their strengths and coming together as one. I thought to share what is going on in long term care homes, as there is mainly coverage on frontline workers in hospitals. Not to discredit hospital heroes during this time, but just wanted to inform people of our unsung heroes.
