i have a few words on the new lucifer episode because it actually made me think about things for once
this is going to have major spoilers for all of Lucifer seasons so please keep scrolling if your not caught up!!
so in my opinion the last few episode stood in as “filler episodes”, like they had little bits of the main story line but had more of an arcing over effect of a side story. Like learning about Ella’s brother and shit, like this can be argued as character development but idk man i dont see it that way. (dont get my wrong, i love Ella but i think that episode was unnecessary)
anyway, there were many aspects of this episode that furthered something i thought (like honestly i thought they were about to stop doing this more and i was going to CRY) they were in pure need of furthering: the relationship between Chloe and Lucifer on a romantic level aND major character development in Lucifer’s character.
i may be a bit bias because i kin with Lucifer but i consider this episode one of the fundamental episodes in understanding who Lucifer really is and how he has changed and “developed” from the old Lucifer we first met at the beginning of Season 1. And we also finally see some real loving connection between Lucifer and Chloe that i don’t feel like we have seen for a bit now (which was pissing me off to no end).
So with the extremely important development of Lucifer’s character was very obvious about the end of the previous episode where Lucifer ends his alliance with Cain because of the position Chloe was put in with the bomb, he realizes that she isn’t just like him with his immortality and could actually die one day. It is obvious from Lucifer’s expressions and visual tone (and by the amazing acting Tom Ellis puts into Lucifer’s character to show these emotions) that it worries Lucifer to no ends. So what does Lucifer do being the Luci he is?? He puts up walls and acts super generous to everyone and is extremely kind to everyone. He puts even more walls up between Chloe and himself so that whenever she has to go, that A. he would not be as hurt B. he would not become the reason that she would get injured again (since it was pretty much Lucifer’s fault Chloe had to deal with the bomb). He does not want to have to suffer being the reason so passes.
I don’t think this could apply but there was a part of me that noticed Chloe’s, almost, annoyance/jealousy/frustration about how Lucifer was treating other people with more affection then he was treating her. Chloe could’ve have almost felt this place empty in her so it reflected on how she acted. But that’s very high speculation and probably far from being right.
Anyway, the last 2 at the end of the episode are the MOST important. These are the scenes where 1. Lucifer takes a knife to the shoulder (even though he is mortal around Chloe) for her 2. Lucifer realizes he really messed up with trying to avoid Chloe and give other people affection and confronts Linda about it.
so lets start with the 1st scene out of the 2. Lucifer originally became Axara’s LAPD’s protection “bodyguard” because he did not want to put Chloe in harms way, but when Axara’s assistant shows up at Lux, where Lucifer and Axara are, Chloe gets into a sticky situation aiming her pistol at the assistant. So lets stop right there and talk about that. So if you look carefully at Lucifer’s expression, he has the mixture of terror, concentration, ashame and alertness. He is terrified because he could die since being around Chloe makes him immortal and that Chloe is present in this situation so her life, too, is at risk. And, like the bomb, the only reason Chloe is in this dangerous situation is because of Lucifer so this is one of the reasons he is concentrated and alert. He is also concentrated since Chloe is standing 5-7 feet away from him, he is reading to stand right in front of Chloe to make sure she does not get injured. That is also the same reason he is alert. Lastly, he is ashamed because of course he is the reason Chloe is in this position and he failed at the job he took from Chloe so that she would be protected. So in a way, this could make Lucifer upset about how he treated a job at the LAPD and reflects badly on himself because he could not pull up his end.
After the first moments of the 1st scene, the assistant, Chloe, Axara and Lucifer discuss the motive for the assistant attempting murder on Axara. Once Lucifer and the assistant get into a tenser conversation, at the end, the assistant launches at Chloe with the knife where Lucifer blocks her by tackling her on the ground and taking a knife to the shoulder.  So this is super important and very fundamental to Lucifer as a character. He risks his OWN WELL BEING FOR CHLOE BECAUSE HE DOES NOT WANT ANY FORCE HURTING HER THAT WAS DIRECTLY CAUSED BY LUCIFER’S ISSUES THAT LUCIFER DID NOT CLEAN UP. HE MAKES SURE THAT GOD CAN NOT DO ANYTHING TO CHLOE. he has previously shown that he will do anything for her; like giving up his one way ticket back to Hell up for her (the coin back in s1 i think it was). So that he did was both a surprise and something to be suspected.
We knew that Lucifer was going to make sure Chloe sustained barely any damage in that scene or no damage, but no one had any idea how (or at least i didn’t). I personally did NOT expect Lucifer to practically jump on top of the assistant and hold her down, honestly i don’t know what i was expecting. But that he did this fundamentally showed that even though throughout the whole episode he acted like he did not want to care about Chloe and stay close to her, he risked his own life for her.
Fundamentally bringing back this side of Lucifer was, in my opinion, important to the storyline in some aspect that we haven’t seen yet. I have this gut feeling that we know Lucifer will jump onto someone for Chloe and take this much damage to himself that this will probably happen in the finale or sometime before it. Like this scene showed that Lucifer is capable of doing this so when he does it later on, it isn’t such a shock.
now the other scene. this scene is after the case is solved and, from what it looks like, Chloe is wrapping up the case before going to the Axara concert. We instantly see Cain come up to Chloe and question her about the free Axara VIP tickets because Cain felt like he had a chance with her because of something Amenadiel said after the knife situation in the scene before. But moments later, Lucifer approaches Chloe and jokes about how he is already invited and she says Cain and her are going. and the amount of disappointment in himself about her reasons why and the betrayal he feels from Cain are so vividly shown in the last 5 minutes is spectacular!! Few seconds later, we see a sitting Lucifer in a chair a little farther from where Cain and Chloe are leaving. He watches them smile at each other and leave. The sadness and loneliness Lucifer feels is so well displayed it was heartbreaking.
And he knew he could not go to anyone else but Linda, so he goes to his therapist and fully admits to making this mistake HIMSELF. he did NOT blame anyone else, HE BLAMED HIMSELF. LUCIFER BLAMED HIMSELF AND OWNED UP TO A MISHAP HE MADE. HE OWNED UP TO MAKING A MISTAKE. something like this is so notable because when does Lucifer own up to his mistakes? practically never. off the top of my head i can not think of another example of him owning up (there is probably one but i just don’t remember). The whole mood of this last scene, has depression written all over it and we know this atmosphere of despair is Lucifer’s emotions during this event.
okay that’s all i have. i am so grateful for the people that read this [smooch] have a wonderful rest of your 24 hours!
