Happy #SharkWeek! Yes, we MUST start our week off with Carcharocles (or Otodus depending on taxonomy!?) megalodon! A C. megalodon (Yes, we shorten the name, like T.rex!) tooth is one of the few objects that you can hold in your hand that strikes fear, fascination, & mortality into your very being. See this gorgeous illustration? Louis Agassiz, Swiss-American biologist and geologist is particularly known for his contributions to ichthyological classification, including extinct species. This C. megalodon drawing from his publication, Les Poissons Fossiles (2nd 📷), illustrated by Austrian artist Joseph Dinkel, depicts every line, detail & serration on the shark's tooth. Early scientific illustrations as detailed as these are still extremely important, especially because specimens can become deteriorated or lost over time. Though C. megalodon is very, VERY extinct (YES, VERY MUCH DEAD!), its legacy lives on through science, illustrations, & our imagination. Day 3 of @thestemsquad's #WEARESTEMSQUAD photo-a-day Chalenge. And today the theme is - Field. I'm an #actuallivingscientist with a BSc in #nanotechnology and #chemistry from @universitywa. I followed this up with two postgrad degrees in #Scicomm - a GradDip from #UWA and a Masters from @ouranu where I was part of the #ScienceCircus team in 2015 thanks to an agreement between #ouranu and @questaconnstc. Now I work by day as a marketing and communication officer for a mathematical not-for-profit and by "night" as an #SciencePresenter at #Questacon doing shows and #tinkering around with projects and ideas throughout the centre. Day 5 of #wearestemsquad What am I currently reading? I am so proud to say I'm reading a book written by a good family friend, @rickvega5437 Dr. Rick Vega is an emergency medicine doctor in Texas who throughout his decades of practice has seen way too much chlid abuse. Dr. Vega believes his path is to start AND normalize the conversation on preventing unwanted pregnancies, especially by people who shouldn't be having children in the first place. Dr. Vega wants to enlighten people on the horrible suffering unwanted children endure and how we as a society can shift this problem by being able to freely talk about issues such as birth control without be judged or shamed. This is why as a young women, especially with politics nowadays, I associate so strongly with reproductive rights. Day 1 #WEARESTEMSQUAD So…I just recently became aware that for the Month of March, the badass peeps of #thestemsquad will be posting a picture a day based around a specific theme and today’s theme, is “me”. ---- if you’re unaware of whom I’m talking about its the kickass, sexy, nerdy, taking-over-the-world women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics #womeninSTEM --- First, I want to acknowledge that this is an era where women are increasingly prominent in medicine, law, and business; #career paths minimally pursued before the early 2000’s. But now, 10 or so years later, women are successfully “breaking the glass ceiling” into a new realm of STEM. Making this era, the BEST era of all. Women empowerment is now rooting itself deep within every major career playing field. Women of all ages, races, nationalities, political views, money status, faith, and everything else are creating imprints the world has been patiently waiting for. Why so few women in Science and Engineering? I ask myself this question all the time…because it is true. I remember how much of a struggle it was when I applied for Undergraduate Research programs. I was emphasizing my degree’s focus in #immunology and was analyzing #internship programs that had woman as the PI (Primary Investigator). My enquiry began small (looking at 2-3 colleges) but the more I searched the more I noticed there wasn’t a damn female in sight. 2 female faculty members in the entire Immunology sector…TWO…and that was the trend nearly everywhere. However, instead of feeling discouraged, I felt enlightened. I knew I was about to be a part of one of the most profound movements in Women’s History…and I was NOT alone. A few years later, I decided I wanted to take a leap and completely change careers and enter Technology. I successfully transitioned into a ASP.Net MVC C# programmer and am currently #workingremotely while traveling from city to city --- current city: Mexico City. Now, I know dozens of chicklets who are making monster waves in the STEM community and paving the dusty trail for future women like “me” in STEM. #wearestemsquad #womeninSTEM #research #immunology #programming #globecoder (at Condesa)
