Bridal Party Ready or Not Room

Ready?...Set?...

 …Of course you’re not set. We haven’t even discussed getting ready yet! Not the follow up you were expecting? Well we’re here today to make sure you know what to expect when you’re getting ready for your big day.

 Let’s begin with a bit of candor. One of the biggest reasons your wedding day is such a long “day” is because it takes such a long time to get ready. The good news is that this can be one of, if not the most fun parts of your big, long day! And why shouldn’t it be? You’re hanging out with all your closest girlfriends, moms, grandmothers and all the ladies that made (and will continue to make) your day possible. Here are our tips for making sure you and all those besties are more than ready for that journey down the aisle.

 Budget appropriately

We’re not necessarily talking about money here. As a bride, you should budget about 2 hours for your own hair and make-up and generally an hour and a half for each of your bridesmaids. Brides typically get ready first and then conduct a few touchups before first look and the ceremony. These moments are also great opportunities for the photographer to capture some candid snapshots. Time is not the only resource to be well-budgeted. Make sure you have plenty of food and snacks for everyone present. The last thing you want is a “hangry” bridesmaid walking down the aisle. [You and your beloved have probably heard the phrase “happy wife, happy life.” What most people don’t catch is the end of that saying: “…happy chicks make happy pics.”] I personally think it is a nice touch to have a toast of champagne with everyone while you get ready. It kicks off the special day on the right note and settles everyone’s nerves for the rest of the day. That said, if you decide to serve alcohol in your “ready room” to wash down those tea sandwiches, then make sure to either serve plenty of water or limit the number of bottles available for consumption. The only thing worse than a scowling, “hangry” bridesmaid walking down the aisle: a drunk one, crawling or stumbling down it.

 Practice makes perfect

And you want your day to be perfect don’t you? Of course you do! That’s why you should always do a trial run for hair and make up prior to your big day. Talk to the hair and make-up team. Determine if you should limit your bridesmaids’ selections. Keeping the bridesmaids’ choices simple will not only diminish everyone’s stress, it will set the tone for a smooth day. Another thing to always do: pay for your bridesmaids’ hair and make-up. Leaving it up to someone that doesn’t want to pay (sometimes justifiably so) the hundreds of dollars it costs to look nice for your wedding day photos could mean that you’re left with someone that doesn’t look very nice for your wedding day photos.

 Pay up for the make-up

Sure you’re (hopefully) getting everyone a bridesmaid’s gift to say thank you, but picking up the tab on something over which they have little to no control, I think, should be something that goes without saying. Besides, they are likely already paying for things like travel, accommodation, and transportation – not to mention any potential time off from work. They’re already worried about their boss’s under-the-breath comment on dipping early from the Friday afternoon staff meeting. Don’t make them worry about whether they can afford to look pretty on top of that.

 Tangential note on make-up – if you have friends with acne, I would also suggest finding a make-up artist that does airbrushing. This such a neat tool! Not that she was an overly blemished pre-pubescent, but we used it on my grandmother, what with all of her aging spots and wrinkles (we love you Gramps!), and she looked so fresh and young! Looking back, I wish we could have convinced my sister’s now father-in-law to get a little airbrushing. What? No! No, he’s a handsome man. But he took a spill a couple weeks prior to the wedding and scratched his face. Had we thought of it at the time, he may have appreciated the effort to make sure those immortal photos didn’t remind him of his fall. When people look pretty they feel pretty! And not only do pretty people smile nicely for your photos, they’re confident and have a fabulous time.

 Red, red wiiiiiine…stay far from me-ee-ee

Since you’re (probably) wearing white, make sure you stay far away from the red wine – and cola, and ketchup, and mustard, and anything else that will leave a stain not only your dress, but on the enjoyment of your big day. I once heard a horror story about a debutant that bumped into someone and dropped her red lip stick down the front of her white dress. Do NOT let this happen to you. There is nothing you can do about it the day of!

  Speaking of the dress, two last side notes to consider. Number 1: Some wedding dresses are being made with cheap, easily broken zippers, so be sure to have some needle and thread on hand just in case! Personally, I’ve seen this happen 3 times. Certainly not every time, but often enough to know it’s not pretty. Number 2 (a best kept-secret you heard here first): Heel guards! Especially when it comes to the soft ground found at outdoor weddings, these guys are a bride’s best friend. Unless it’s your maid(en) of honor, then she’s your best friend. Regardless, these little suction cups that you stick on your heels are a life saver, and will keep you from sinking into the grass or slipping on gravel. Not to mention keeping you off this list of wedding day horror stories.
