5/20-5/26: Oregon Road Trip!

So I am back in California after going to Oregon, it was an interesting experience. 

Wednesday: The day before a road trip always feels like an unspoken casualty. Yes, you are home, but you are home getting ready to be away from home. Some might even call it a transition day but that doesn’t quite feel right. 

Thursday: We left early in the morning, stopped by San Francisco for food, and if you ever find yourself down there for lunch-stop by Pier 39 or Pier 41. Excellent fish. Strangely empty, but I guess Covid will do that to a place huh? Stopped in Crescent City for the day. 

Friday: Some of us got up early to walk the beaches. California has some pretty beaches but, have you ever noticed how when you cross over the California border into Oregon that giant rocks show up in the ocean? It is an amazing site. We attempted to visit the redwoods national forest, but were unsuccessful. Instead headed to what we call the Baby Animal Zoo in Bandon. Awesome experience. We headed all the way up to Tillamook, the city that cheese built. I hate the road to get there, but love the destination. 

Saturday: We visited another local place with wonderful cheeses, before heading to the Tillamook creamery. I love that place. It has changed since I last went there. More to see, more to buy, and my only sad note is no more garlic white cheese. We ended up eating lunch and getting ice cream there, and that was life changing. We headed to Bend, OR where we have family to visit. 

Sunday: We took our Great Grandfather out to Breakfast and Dinner, and stopped in Sisters, OR for some shopping in between. If you find yourself in Bend, OR - stay at the River House hotel. That was a lovely hotel, and right on the Deschutes River, fabulous. 

Monday: We headed from Bend to Roseburg, seeing another family member on the way in. We ended up finding a craft brewery that was just amazing, and took too little beer home from it. 

Tuesday: We left Roseburg after tending to the graves in the local cemetery that are in our family,  and headed to Redding, where a family friend lives and drove past Sacramento to stay in a hotel, eager to put more miles closer to home in. 

Wednesday: We left the Sacramento area in the morning and did not get home until the afternoon. Nothing says your home like 2 hours of traffic for what is supposed to be only a handful of miles, right? 

Overall, I do not regret going on this trip. It was good to see family, and be with family in the process. I always find that being a temporary local somewhere else gives me a new perspective when I find myself a local in my own town again. Covid has definitely changed travel, hopefully in a way that slowly gets reversed. “Complimentary Breakfast” is now “we grabbed things at the local costco and ask you to heat it up in a microwave”. But good trip.
