so I started watching The First Frost (on Netflix, how dreadful) and the translators just refused to translate the episode titles ??? Like why? It's clearly important and the writers put effort into them, so why this "creative" choice to just neglect it?

So here I will write down all the starting and ending titles (because I'm a sucker for these things) as I go through the eps, so I can help my fellow viewers out as well as my future self (ik she will re-watch this).

When they say 'I love you' but Wen Yifan literally said:

SANG YAN SLEPT ON THE SOFA AFTER WEN YIFAN SLEEPWALKING AND SLEPT ON HIS BED, BECAUSE THERE'S CHANCE YIFAN WILL SLEEPWALKING TO HIS BED AGAIN. LIKE WHEN I THOUGHT THIS MAN COULDN'T GET BETTER, HE ALWAYS PROVED ME WRONG 😭

Was watching The First Frost and now a scene where Sang Yan was drunk is mentioned. In hidden love a lot of us did not know what actually happened. The main focus was not on Sang Yan. It's just made me a little more sad because in Hidden love Sang Yan is a goofy but emotional big brother. It is lightly mentioned that someone is pursuing Sang Yan which we took in a comedic way. But in the graduation party Duan Xiaxu did not drink and all we thought was he doesn't drink due to his dad. We lost focus on Sang Yan who was heartbroken 😭😢💔. Our pookie brother Sang Yan was heartbroken!!!! Omg. It kinda shocked me. Anyways there has been a lot of comparison about the portrayal of Sang Yan. Victor Ma's performance moved me on the brother part however I was curious about his storyline too. I definitely wanted to see Wen Yifan there. I was also with people about casting him in The First Frost. But man!!! the The First Frost was so dark that I forgot about anything that bothered me. Poor Wen Yifan . It's a fraction of what some real women go through in their daily lives💔. Bai Jing Ting is a pookie green flag ml as Sang Yan. So, I don't have any issues with it. I'm loving both versions of Sang Yan. Both are attractive to me 🫣.

I was so SO incredibly touched by this scene, got teary eyed and everything because how pure and unconditional truly is Sang Yan's love. And it makes me so happy to know that Yifan finally knows how deeply and unwaveringly she's loved by him.

Currently enjoying the beautiful episodes of The First Frost before the dreaded Hong Kong arc, and I have some additional thoughts.

The reason why this arc fails so badly is because we are shown during multiple episodes how Wen Yifan is processing and understanding the way she hurt Sang Yan back when she essentially pushed him away and ran off to Yihe. We see her being remorseful and repeatedly thinking that he deserves the entire world and that she will treat him better, being brave and taking steps towards him. And then they fall apart again, both in the novel and in the series, but it's how those moments are handled that makes all the difference in the world from a narrative point of view.

In the novel, the moment of them falling apart is a character progression. The misguided desire to protect him is still there, but she has learned from the past and she doesn't cut him off, she simply hides something unpleasant from him, and when she realises she has hurt him again, she gains a new understanding of what it means to be in a relationship, to be actually vulnerable and open up to the person you love the most - so she follows him to Yihe, opens up about her past and apologises for having dumped him in the past, and it's a moment that brings them even closer.

In the series, them falling apart cannot be described in any other way than character regression. She repeats the same mistake she did in the past - she runs away (and this time he doesn't even know where she went), cuts off all contact, dumps all her responsibilities (including her cat!) on him, and stays missing in action for more than half a year. And when they do reconnect, he's the one coming to her instead of the other way around, and while she does apologise for dumping him in the past, she doesn't apologise for her Hong Kong antics, leaving the viewer with the impression that she takes him for granted and expects him to always wait for her, no matter what. In that context, her subsequent worry and care for him come across as hollow, because they reflect her growth in the novel without said growth being supported by the novel storyline, and so the only way in which the viewer can keep investing in the relationship is treating the Hong Kong arc like it didn't exist (sort of like the characters themselves are doing). And it angers me because this exercise would have been completely unnecessary if they would just have followed the damn novel in the first place.

When you really think about it, the Sang siblings don't actually have a lot of rizz. They almost kinda fail in the rizz department

Sang Zhi gave up on Jiaxu and reunited again as an adult, then being the woman that she is who cares about him sm, he noticed her as a woman

Sang Yan also literally had a friendship break up. When they were in highschool he said that his feelings were one-sided. He kept figuratively hammering into Wen Yifan that he cares about her before the breakup and after their reunion. Everyday. Literally took 7 years.

No, if you analyze, you'll see they bagged Duan Jiaxu and Wen Yifan via years of constant unconditional love and care
