Stormlight Archive Epigraphs (6) - The Diagram

These epigraphs are from Part 5 of Words of Radiance. Text below includes spoilers for the pre-released chapters of Rhythm of War.

Catechism of the Back of the Flowered Painting: paragraph 1

Tenets of Instruction, Back of the Footboard: paragraph 1

We now know that Taravangian’s goal was to become king of all Roshar and then make a deal/bet with Odium to spare Taravangian’s people (i.e. everyone) if Taravangian won. As of Oathbringer, he has failed at this.

Chaos in Alethkar is, of course, inevitable. Watch carefully, and do not let power in the kingdom solidify. The Blackthorn could become an ally or our greatest foe, depending on whether he takes the path of the warlord or not. If he seems likely to sue for peace, assassinate him expeditiously. The risk of competition is too great.

Floorboard 17: paragraph 2, every second letter starting with the first

This seems to be Taravangian trying to find Honorblades. If the swords of the Heralds, like those of the Radiants, were made from bonds with spren (were they?), breaking the Oathpact would inherently entail leaving the blades behind. Taravangian appears to have orchestrated Szeth’s exile in order to get access to an Honorblade and a person with the Surge of Gravitation.

The Unmade

The Unmade are a deviation, a flair, a conundrum that may not be worth your time. You cannot help but think of them. They are fascinating. Many are mindless. Like the spren of human emotions, only much more nasty. I do believe a few can think, however.

The fandom has largely concluded that the last statement is referring to an Unmade, due to it being from the same location as the other two. And as of WOR, we know that Sja-anat has made contact with Shallan. I don’t trust this, personally. Sja-anat may have divergent interests from the other Unmade, but I don’t believe she has the best interests of humanity (or Singers, for that matter) at heart.

“They are fools” refers to the people (Sons of Honor, I think?) who were deliberately trying to bring back the Desolations so that the Radiants would return. Gavilar may have been among them (?). The Ancient of Stones is Talenel (which means that Taravangian figured out what had really happened with the Heralds, which is very impressive).

But who is the wanderer, the wild piece, the one who makes no sense? I glimpse at his implications, and the world opens to me. I shy back. Impossible. Is it?

North Wall Coda, Windowsill region: paragraph 2. (This appears to be a sequence of dates, but their relevance is as yet unknown.]

No idea about these number series. I’m an analyst, not a cryptographer.
