Unknowable

An online exhibition of sculpture by Teresa Wilson organised through Laura I. Gallery and Artsy. Please use the link above to access the event. Details below.
The show celebrates the uncanny art of Teresa Wilson, known for her haunting puppet sculptures made from textile, wire and mixed media.  The work explores psychological ideas such as Freud’s unheimlich “the uncanny” the human sculptures appearing to be just about to move or speak yet at the same time having a dead mummified appearance. Wilson imagines her human sculptures as actors in mini dramas, “unknowable” events which hint at memories, dreams, fairy tales and fragments from the distant past.  The work takes the viewer into a strange shadowy world where the people are “other” to us. It is a world of the Wild Man, strange little people, ghostly dancers and the sinister Yellow Room.
Why does Wilson feel the necessity of creating this imaginative realm of mysterious beings? It is because, like Bourgeois, she is concerned with making real and physical those intrusive shadows and memories from the unconscious part of the mind.  By making these uncomfortable emotions into real presences she is able to confront them ‘head on’ and invites us all to do the same.
Robert McLiam Wilson’s essay Wild At Heart in the introduction to Charles Fréger’s book Wilder Mann: The Image Of The Savage, describes the modern world of data stream, internet, social media and global networks as “...becoming a kind of poison... (we are) all networked and isolated, at the same time disconnected and too connected...and we are becoming strange to each other...we are losing ourselves and losing each other”.
As an antidote to this modern dystopia we can reconnect to others and to ourselves by ‘digging down’ and searching for the founding myths which tie us to our ancestors, to traditions associated with place and the collective consciousness.  In this exhibition Wilson follows two themes which like a dark thread run through our dreams and understanding of ourselves; these are the archetypes of the Wild Man/Woman and the symbolism of the colour Yellow.
The image of the wild man is an emblem of altereity, of the outsider, part of our consciousness since human beings first settled into farming communities, or even earlier.  It is a founding myth and an integral part of our understanding of ourselves. “We need to define who we are by first defining who we are not. We are Tame Man because we are not Wild Man.  We know what we can trust because we know what we fear... (we) feel included because of what is excluded” (1).  The wild man appears in a changing form throughout the ages and cultures, he may be a hairy monster, a fairy, a dwarf, a hermit or a murderer.  The wild woman archetype on the other hand has links with the wild intuitive nature of wolves; it is the wise woman of the fairy tales, a creative force that has been pushed down by male dominated cultures afraid of its power within the instinctive nature of all women.(2) This exhibition contains a series of these “others”, linked to traditional stories or archaeological findings; they may disturb us at the same time as speaking to ‘to our depths’ and allowing us to relive, rehearse and heal long forgotten fears and traumas.
Every colour has both positive and negative symbolism.  Yellow is the colour of light and happiness, but the flipside of yellow is associated with sickness, sensationalism, fear and madness;  think of yellow fever, The Yellow Book containing the sensationalist drawings and fantasies of Aubrey Beardsley and the use of the word yellow to mean cowardly. The artist Vincent Van Gogh lived in the Yellow House in Arles when he suffered his mental health breakdown.  In order to know ourselves it is essential to dig beneath our fears, for what we are afraid of may reveal itself by what we are drawn to. The Yellow Room is an “uncanny” installation within the exhibition, hinting at strange perceptions and happenings, it is both familiar and unfamiliar, homely and ‘unhomely’.
Running through the exhibition is the concept of looking beneath the present reality to explore the lost traces of people gone before and the psychological unearthing of hidden aspects of the psyche that connect us to the collective or community consciousness, helping us to remain included and integrated rather than lonely, disconnected and strange to each other.
The exhibition runs from 21 June to 11 July 2021 online through the Artsy platform. An online Zoom Preview event will be held on Thursday 24 June, tickets available on Eventbrite.
