It’s Not a Bird or a Plane. It’s a Rocket Ship Roaring in the Backyard. BOCA CHICA, Texas — The text arrived late at night: For your own safety, leave home by morning, it read. Nancy and James Crawford, no longer surprised but still unsettled, raced away in their S.U.V. after sunrise, occasionally twisting their necks to catch a glimpse of the space rocket towering behind them. Moments later, the Crawfords, who are in their 70s, watched from a 12th-floor balcony on South Padre Island, a few miles up the coast, as the rocket shattered on impact during an attempted landing, spreading fiery debris along the sand dunes and tidal flats. The building shook, Mr. Crawford recalled, and in the distance, there was “a ball of fire.” “It was exciting,” echoed his wife, “but too dangerous if we had stayed home.” Home for the Crawfords is a remote coastal community a stone’s throw from Mexico, a village so small that water has to be trucked in. With a single road in that ends at the shoreline, it has long attracted people eager to escape congested cities, and retirees eager to escape the harsh winters of the North and Midwest. From the community tucked among lush wetlands, wildlife refuges and sandy beaches, the nearest supermarket is about 20 miles away, past long stretches of gravel roads and a Border Patrol checkpoint. Until a few years ago, the handful of residents could not have imagined that rockets designed for interplanetary travel would be as much a part of their view as the Rio Grande. But ever since the billionaire Elon Musk brought his private space company, SpaceX, to the area, life has not been the same. A gargantuan gray rocket, surrounded by chain-link fencing less than a mile from the ranch-style brick homes, is a constant reminder that the Crawfords and their remaining neighbors live near a space launching pad. SpaceX representatives usually give the 10 or so residents plenty of warning that a rocket is scheduled for launching. Other times, loud sirens warn them, and some, like the Crawfords, choose to put on heavy-duty headphones to block some of the noise. When a rocket engine is tested, the roar and trembling are so powerful that they can blow windows inward. Humans are not the only species who cower. The earsplitting sound of rockets shrieking above the tidal flats has caused some, such as shorebirds, to flee in terror or to stop nesting in the area altogether. And heavy machinery brought in to retrieve whatever debris has scattered often damages the road and scares away other wildlife, environmentalists said. While the Federal Aviation Administration has given SpaceX environmental clearance for the tests, environmentalists worry that recent explosions could have a lasting effect on the ecologically rich area, home to a number of endangered species, like ocelots and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. “When you’re testing brand-new technology and brand-new rockets, brand-new engines, stuff like that happens,” said Jim Chapman, president of Friends of the Wildlife Corridor, a nonprofit group with a mission to protect the native habitats of the Rio Grande Valley. “Well, our feeling is, that shouldn’t be happening here.” But the story of how SpaceX came to Boca Chica, about 22 miles from Brownsville, Texas, begins with a promise of a much-needed economic boost to one of the poorest regions in the country. For decades, Brownsville and the broader Rio Grande Valley have struggled with a lack of opportunities and a brain drain, with many college graduates opting to leave for careers elsewhere. Before SpaceX became entrenched in Brownsville’s consciousness, the local economy had relied heavily on jobs with the government, schools, health care and some low-paying retail stores, officials said. Representatives for SpaceX, which is investing a fortune in its quest to send people to Mars, did not respond to a request for comment. But officials of Cameron County, which includes Boca Chica, said the company had infused hope and optimism into the region. When the company announced plans to move to the area in 2014, it promised to create about 500 local jobs, said Eddie Treviño Jr., the Cameron County judge, the county’s top elected official. But as of late last year, he said, the actual figure was more than triple that, with more than 1,600 jobs in construction, clerical and other fields, most of them given to local residents, he said. The benefits to the Brownsville area, where according to the U.S. Census Bureau at least 30 percent of the population lives in poverty, will eventually outweigh whatever tension and disruptions the company has brought, Mr. Treviño said. “We have to balance the good with the bad,” he said. Won’t You Be My Neighbor? The search for the ideal SpaceX launching pad began more than 10 years ago. Sites were considered in other states, including Georgia, California and Alaska, but engineers needed a mostly desolate area close to the ocean. Boca Chica, a retirement community with only a few year-round residents, fit the bill. After SpaceX signed a deal to set up operations near the village, the testing of rockets that would one day reach outer space began a few years later in earnest, Mr. Treviño said. The company has taken a fail-fast, fix-fast approach, which essentially means that engineers use the tests to identify shortcomings in the design and then make adjustments before the next test. Over the past year, those who still live in the community have had to flee before every launch. Four rockets have exploded, spreading debris across the area. (The most recent test, this month, did not result in an explosion, and an elated Mr. Musk took to Twitter to celebrate the milestone: “Starship landing nominal!”) This was not the Crawfords’ idea of a peaceful retirement. Both worked in government jobs in Michigan, him in law enforcement and her with a deeds department. And though they still spend their summers in Michigan, they bought their home in Boca Chica 10 years ago in search of nature and some quiet. Then came the knocks on their door, and on the doors of their neighbors. SpaceX wanted their homes. Representatives with the space giant had appraised the Crawfords’ single-story, three-bedroom brick house at $50,000 and was willing to pay “three times” that, they were told. The Crawfords dismissed what they considered to be a paltry offer from one of the richest men in the world. “We can’t buy a new house with that money,” Mr. Crawford said with a chuckle. Last October, the offers finally stopped. “We are pretty certain that we will be able to remain in our home,” Ms. Crawford said with a sigh of relief. But many of their neighbors, who like them once found Boca Chica the perfect winter oasis, took the checks and left. And one by one, the ranch homes have been replaced by modern white houses with solar-powered rooftops, the occupants younger space professionals who work for SpaceX, local residents said. “You can tell which homes are SpaceX because they are the ones that look the same, a stale white and black,” said Rosemary Workman, 72, who spends most of the year in Boca Chica and has turned down offers to sell her home. One of her new neighbors has stood out. Mr. Musk has been spotted staying in an unassuming ranch-style house. Ms. Workman and her neighbors sometimes see him taking a stroll with two men they assume are part of his security detail. “He doesn’t really make an effort to say hi or get to know us,” said Jim Workman, 75, who lives across the street from the billionaire. The feeling, he admitted, is mutual. He pointed to a flag on his front porch that reads “Come and Take It” below the image of a cannon, the flag fashioned for the Texas Revolution and long a symbol of defiance in the state. “I think he gets the message,” Mr. Workman said. Fuera SpaceX Concerns over SpaceX extend beyond Boca Chica. In downtown Brownsville, Elias Cantu, an activist with the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, the oldest Mexican-American civil rights organization in the country, stood beside a mural of Mr. Musk that read “Boca Chica to Mars” and shrugged. He said he feared it would be only a matter of time before Boca Chica’s extreme redevelopment found itself encroaching into Brownsville’s poorest neighborhoods. “It’s inevitable,” Mr. Cantu said. “He’ll need homes to house all the people he wants to bring down here. I’m afraid he’s going to push out a lot of low-income families who have lived here for generations.” Xandra Treviño, a member of Fuera SpaceX, an organization pushing back on SpaceX’s rapid expansion (its name translates as Leave SpaceX), said she and many other activists felt ignored by area policymakers. “I feel like people believe that SpaceX is going to be good for the community, when in fact, they are too large to control, too large to hold accountable,” Ms. Treviño said. “Local officials are only seeing money signs. Local officials are star struck.” But area officials said they could not turn away millions of dollars in local investments and the promise of high-paying jobs in a region that for decades has been starved for investment. In the “build it and they will come” philosophy, the space giant has already attracted other employers to the region. Space Channel, an entertainment network devoted to covering space, recently announced that it would move part of its operations from Los Angeles to Brownsville, including six executives, with local positions to follow. Other companies are likely to do the same, said Rose Gowen, who sits on the city commission. “One of the very important things for me to support, and us to support, is growing the wealth,” said Ms. Gowen. Mr. Musk seems to agree. He recently announced on Twitter that he planned to donate $30 million for city revitalization projects and schools. The mayor of Brownsville, Trey Mendez, did not respond to a request for an interview. But in a statement, he said he supported money coming in. “We look forward to a discussion about how this could help our community prosper as we take a front seat to the next chapter of space exploration and innovation,” he said. But that growth is no consolation for the holdout residents of Boca Chica. The Crawfords like to sit in their backyard and admire the several species of birds looking for respite, or the delightful sightings of those migrating. But reminders that they live near a launchpad are never far away. Every now and then, loud sirens startle them, signaling that the testing of rocket engines is about to begin. Or they receive a text asking them to leave their home, a cue that a launch is imminent. When a local sheriff’s vehicle drives by with its sirens on, the Crawfords know they are supposed to run to the street or at least leave their home. They know their windows could shatter. But the last time they heard the siren, on one afternoon this spring, the couple looked at each other and shrugged. “We grew tired of running out,” Ms. Crawford said. This is life near SpaceX, after all. Source link Orbem News #backyard #Bird #plane #roaring #rocket #ship

What IF Michael Jordan was a dual-sport All-Star?
In the events with the NBA Playoffs officially underway, this is a perfect time to chime in on another favorite sports hero of my time: Michael Jordan. Being born in Chicago and baptized during the Chicago Bulls dynasty era, I was more than lucky to witness as a young kid the greatness that was “Air Jordan.” Hell, I even came out of the womb wearing Jordans on my feet until I was 12-years old. Chicago was on an all-time high during the first three championships the Bulls brought to the city, but it was mere tragedy when Jordan discovered that his father was murdered by the time the series finished and he sealed his third championship. The sports world took even a bigger shock when Jordan announced his retirement from the game of basketball, and decided to turn his attention to the sport that his father loved; and that happened to be baseball.
Chicago Bulls’ owner Jerry Reinsdorf did not want to let his best financial asset go so hastily, so he offered Jordan a contract to play for the other team he owned in Chicago; the White Sox. Jordan signed a minor league contract on February 7, 1994 for the Birmingham Barons. Jordan’s career for the White Sox was short lived, only playing the 1994 season in double-A minor affiliate before he returned to the Bulls for his second reign of three straight championships. His performance for his single season for the Barons was considered less than average; having a batting average at .202, hitting only three home runs, and striking out over a hundred times appearing in only 127 games. Most baseball fans and historians would find Jordan’s baseball career a travesty; however, how history unfolded it could have been a more interesting expectation if Jordan kept his dedication with baseball over his return to basketball.
An interesting article came out on ESPN last week that featured a great deal of supporting cast members that were a part of the Birmingham Barons during the ’94 season that had a different take on the playing style of Michael Jordan. Former team manager Terry Francona mentioned that after Jordan left the team, he was highly confident that he was about a thousand at bats away from getting into the big leagues. Francona, well known, successful manager in the big leagues for the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians, still has a prosperous relationship with Jordan. They still communicate on a regular basis as one of the close relationships Jordan made while playing for the Barons. Batting coach Mike Barnett who is the hitting coach for the Indians under Francona was working with him over twenty years ago with the Barons the same time Jordan was there. Barnett marveled at the idea that Jordan’s obsessive competitive nature was unreal compared to the other developing players on the team. Instead of the two batting sessions the players were required to do, Jordan did five. Even though his hitting was under the “Mendoza line,” Jordan worked hard to improve his hitting day after day.

To bring a more “realistic measure” into perspective, Michael Jordan was called up for one exhibition game for the White Sox at Wrigley Field for the Chicago Classic. On April 7th, 1994, Jordan played right field for the South Siders and had an excellent game for a very cold day in Chicago. He went 2 for 5 with a double, two RBIs, and played a key part in tying the game that ended in a tie after ten innings. The amount of years I have watched Cubs games, I have never seen ANY player from the White Sox get a standing ovation at Wrigley Field. Granted, the Chicago fans were there to give Jordan high praise for his performance. So, without lingering on the fact that everyone was “star struck” that the most popular athlete in the city was playing baseball, it was the idea that he was succeeding at the next goal he was looking to accomplish and was in reach of becoming another multi-sport athlete.
If you do not believe me about the game at Wrigley Field, here is exclusive footage of it via WGN
The downfall of it all was that in the same season in 1994, a strike between the players union and the league brought the result of an end of the regular season and no playoffs being played that autumn. Failed negotiations between the players and the owners about salary limitations is where a great deal of players felt like it was their time to walk away from the game. A great deal of replacement players were called in order to fill rosters between the 1994 and 1995 seasons, which included a great deal of promoting players from the minor leagues. The White Sox did not hesitate to ask Michael Jordan if he would like to play at the Major League level, however he did not care for the treatment the players were receiving by the owners and decided to decline the invitation to play for the senior team. Months later, Jordan believed his hiatus from his original sport was over as he returned to the Bulls and continued his legacy bringing another three championships. The rest of the tale of Jordan’s baseball days were nothing but history, however, there has always been a thing in my mind with what if Jordan actually took the White Sox’s offer….
Tumblr media
Inserting the idea that IF Jordan said yes, and became a replacement player for the White Sox , it would have been more to his advantage than disadvantage. The White Sox in 1995 were in complete disarray and did not make the playoffs, as they would have the season before. Jordan would have split time in the outfield alongside players like Mike Deveraux and Lance Johnson. At age 32, he would have been in the same “veteran” type status as the rest of the team were averaging at the same age, around 30.2. Even if he came off the bench as a pitch hitter or runner, his stats that reflected from his minor league days would have reflected effective base running. Jordan had a total of 30 stolen bases while playing for the Barons in the minor leagues, the only player in the starting line up that had more than him was Johnson with 40 swipes. These stats may have not count as a sufficient factor for Jordan, but there were a few benefits that the White Sox could have taken advantage of at the time.
The ”money” that came behind Michael Jordan might have come to be more expensive and hefty than had his $33 million single season contract that he signed in 1997 for the Chicago Bulls. For his age and his experience, he would have signed for the same amount, if not more for a three to five year deal valued close to $50-60 million. The highest paid player in 1995 was Cecil Fielder for the Detroit Tigers at $9.2 million, Jordan would have been pushing it if he came close to make anywhere near that amount. However, with an additional signing bonus becoming a replacement player, plus the values that came with Jordan being a “face of the franchise,” he would have been close to making an estimate of $5 million in 1995. Not to mention the sponsorship Jordan would have easily transferred to the game of baseball that he was already under contract for and that were already using his face in advertising. Today, you can find the “Jump Man” logo on any major sports team from the days Derek Jeter was sponsored by it with the Yankees to the current sponsor of the French football team, Paris Saint-Germain. In the 90s, sure the media would poke fun of the ridiculousness of Jordan bringing a “basketball logo” to the game of baseball, but do you really think anyone is caring on how the business mogul is using it now for any sport under the sun?
The part where I start getting a little bit more naive is the idea that Michael Jordan could have possibly helped the White Sox be a more competing team during the mid to late 90s. Just ask Barry Sanders when he was part of the title attempt of the Atlanta Braves during the 1996 World Series. Looking at the stats, had the Braves won over the Toronto Blue Jays, Sanders would have been the unanimous MVP of the World Series and possibly would have considered a longer prosperous career playing two sports in football and baseball. Jordan, with his competitive nature would have gladly filled that role the same way Sanders did. The rumors of Jordan having an obsession complex of becoming better at something in order to be the best was never a secret among teammates and colleagues on and off the basketball court. His tenacity even showed as he was playing for the Birmingham Barons while he was trying to get up to pace from when he last picked up a bat in high school. Jordan would have taken the initiative being a leader on the White Sox alongside Frank Thomas and Robin Ventura, but everyone would have worried about Jordan’s ego taking control, which would leave teammates to become hostile and send the locker room into complete turmoil.
I guess one can think that the idea of Michael Jordan’s baseball career was nothing but reconciliation that he needed in the absence of his late father. Perhaps it was to get away from the game and clear his head from all the speculation that he was under, like his addiction to gambling. The memory of Jordan playing baseball only lingers with the spotlight he had in it with my childhood guilty pleasure of Space Jam. Even the great Jim Rome in the movie has the joke to poke fun on how disappointing Jordan’s baseball career was. I have mentioned before on this blog how I long for another great athlete to play more than one major sport. The American folk tale that was Bo Jackson was cut short from everyone’s entertainment from the late 1980’s. I am still optimistic that Kyler Murray’s football career will be nothing like his college career and he will eventually come crawling back to baseball. I will let my first sports hero stay immortalized with what he did with the Chicago Bulls, but had he been a White Sox later in his career at a senior level, it would have been possible for my entire family to switch from being Cubs fans to White Sox fans.

In 1993, TV—and TV writing—were much different entities than what we know today.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, Exhibit 5,768: the current golden age of TV has clearly inspired a golden age of TV writing. And if you follow today’s TV criticism at all, chances are a handful of names immediately come to mind (people like Emily Nussbaum at The New Yorker or James Poniewozik at The New York Times, for instance). But time and time again, stories on the rise of this format in recent years end up pointing to one writer—Uproxx’s Alan Sepinwall—as the dean of modern TV criticism.
While landmark TV writing sites like TV Without Pity (1998) wouldn’t come along until the Internet matured, Sepinwall was on the Web back when “Lynx and Mosaic were the only two browsers and you had to drive uphill through the snow both ways to get to the Yahoo! homepage,” as he once put it. Back in 1993, long before he started his own blog or went on to contribute to the Star Ledger and Hitfix, Sepinwall was just a college sophomore posting about NYPD Blue to Usenet.
DS9 recapper / physics teacher, Tim Lynch.

Ask Sepinwall about the origins of modern TV writing, however, and he has something different in mind: Usenet’s rec.arts.startrek.current and a certain Deep Space Nine recapper extraordinaire named Tim Lynch.
“Tim was, I think, a CalTech prof by day. I tried tracking him down once to thank him for inspiration, to no avail,” Sepinwall tweeted when reflecting on his 20 years as a critic in 2016.
Luckily, Sepinwall ultimately got his chance. In fact, the underground TV writing/DS9 legend recognized the name. “I remembered Alan Sepinwall from my days on Usenet,” Lynch told Ars recently. “He didn’t tend to post to the Star Trek newsgroups all that much, but I remember seeing his stuff here and there. And when I later moved back to New Jersey, The Star-Ledger is where he was writing for years. I read that column and I said ‘I know him.’ He found me a few years ago when someone was doing a feature on him, and he ended up sending me a signed copy of his book.”
Enlarge / Ah, a delightful Usenet terminal.
Ground zero(ish) of Internet TV writing
Ahead of the recent anniversary of his start with DS9, Lynch happily revealed he didn’t start modern TV criticism, either—he actually got into it because his college buddy Mike was already reviewing Trek on mailing lists and Usenet back in 1988. “After about half a season [of reading], I said, ‘You know, I can do that,” Lynch said. “So very early in The Next Generation S2, I started writing reviews.”
This was the late ‘80s, and Lynch would review TNG all the way through S6. His early work doesn’t resemble what you’d necessarily read in Entertainment Weekly or on The AV Club today: the pieces include recaps of the main plot and any notable subplots before getting into how he feels about the episode (see an early review from 1989 for TNG’s “The Icarus Factor” as an example). Each ends with a rating out of 10, sometimes rating individual storylines or performances even.
But in January 1993, things changed. That’s when, 25 years ago this month, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine premiered.
“I even said it in one of my reviews, I wasn’t planning on reviewing DS9. The time suck was too large,” Lynch said. He had just started his first year of teaching (which was “also not a time-light activity”). “I warned people not to expect reviews, but then the show premiered. I thought ‘I can’t not talk about this.’”
Here, Lynch’s writing evolved into the forebear for modern TV writing. To start, Lynch didn’t shy away from or hide his personal preferences. For instance, slapstick Ferengi episodes? No thanks, see his review of S6’s “Profit and Lace”—“I wrote something to the effect of: ‘There were some nice moments of pathos, some nice cliffhangers, and Armin Shimerman did a great job, but enough with this week’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’” Lynch recalled. “That got a lot of people’s attention.”
Lynch skipped his prior recaps in favor of individual episode discussions involving themes, writing, and performances. His pieces got longer, and separate season wrap-ups emerged. For another example, Lynch looks back at DS9 S2 as a high point, and a late-season review like his take on two-parter “The Maquis” demonstrates that reverence. While all the reps (Lynch imagines he penned well over 100,000 words in total between TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and some film reviews) clearly helped him develop a certain style, Lynch acknowledges DS9 also provided a richer text to engage with.
“From early on, DS9 struck me as something with so much meat in the premise. There was an awful lot of stuff they could do with it, and I got very into its potential,” he said. “TNG was depicting a very utopian society, which was challenging for the writers at times. But DS9 and later Voyager dealt more with, ‘How do you maintain a utopia’ or, in Voyager’s case, ‘How do you build one?’ Voyager ran away from that premise as fast as it could, but DS9 mostly tried to keep that. In the end, I wasn’t 100 percent thrilled that they decided to go on a war footing instead, but there was a lot of stuff they did that spoke to more complexity of character and theme than TNG. I love TNG, but DS9 usually gave me more to think about.”
Sisko explains to Bashir that humans of the 21st century rebelled against the government that kept impoverished people in ghettos.
The actors who played Bashir and Garak on Deep Space Nine played up the romantic chemistry between the two men.

Deep Space Nine is on the wormhole front in the Dominion Wars, yet its main characters remain fundamentally humane and strive for peace.
Deep Space 9
A genuine Internet impact
Though he covered TNG, Voyager, Enterprise, and some films/books, Lynch’s writings on DS9 are what ultimately earned him a lasting place in TV criticism lore. If the Sepinwall namecheck isn’t enough proof, his work eventually inspired fans to create an entire wikia just for these reviews, and his writing decisions (like when he took on Enterprise or eventually retired) made TrekToday headlines just like the announcement of a new film would. (No, he insists his work didn’t inspire the First Contact character, though.)
Lynch kinda, sorta even had an idea at the time that he was gaining more readers than just his other Usenet pals. Early in his DS9 review, Lynch taught science at a school in California “and I was teaching Rick Berman [Gene Roddenberry’s successor]’s son, just luck of the draw,” he said. “I don’t know that his dad was reading my reviews all that much, but his son certainly was. And he asked me for copies of a couple of them from Voyager and DS9 to print out and show dad.”
Lynch would later hear from people like writer Brannon Braga (TNG, Voyager, Enterprise, and now The Orville) and artist Michael Okuda (supervisor on many films and Enterprise), plus fellow TV writers like Bad Astronomer Phil Plait. A UK magazine called TV Zone asked Lynch to review Trek books based on the strength of his DS9 work, studios approached him with sci-fi scripts to review, Tor nearly published a compilation, and the Marc Alaimo (DS9’s Gul Dukat) fan club even asked him to attend an official farewell dinner at the end of DS9 (both Alaimo and Casey Biggs, DS9’s Damar, chatted Lynch up that evening).
Yet the pièce de résistance of his impact seems clear in retrospect—the TNG writers room once invited Lynch to pitch an episode based on the strength of his work near the beginning of DS9. Lynch recalls he wrote an episode following up on Data dreaming as laid out in TNG’s “Birthright;” the writer dug into Trek dream symbolism and Data’s emotions or lack thereof.
“Obviously, I wasn’t taken, but that was very flattering,” Lynch said. “I’m flattered and still somewhat amazed that the decade or so of writing I did was seen as so valuable.”
Born at the wrong time?
If Lynch came up reviewing Trek during today’s TV writing culture, it’s quite likely he would’ve been scooped up by some major outlet (if not a sci-fi show writer’s room directly) to write full-time. But his experience came during a different era of recaps and reviews, so Lynch still teaches science to generations of young students. And if he were to shift careers back to writing, he’d rather pursue science writing than entertainment writing at this point anyway. Yet, today he has no regrets about how it all played out.
“Those reviews made me realize my writing was somehow valuable, and it encouraged me to keep doing it in some shape or form,” Lynch said. “It made me better as a teacher, and it leads to the occasional moment of hilarity when students stumble upon it and say, ‘Wait, is this you?’ A friend who was dean of students at one of my previous schools referred to me as her favorite science nerd, and she said it was because I didn’t write like one.”
A few years have passed since Lynch rewatched any DS9, but he keeps up with new Trek films and intends to follow Discovery once its distribution method becomes a bit more viewer-friendly. Given how much a certain series shaped his life, however—Lynch’s DS9 writings spanned the entire run of the show, which coincided with ages 22 to 29 for the teacher—it’s unlikely his answer to “what’s the best Trek?” will ever change.
“As much as I tended to ride DS9 for not living up to its potential at times, in a lot of ways it was a high-water mark for writing in the Star Trek Universe,” Lynch said. “The advantage of being in a stationary setting versus a starship setting is, you couldn’t run away from the consequences, which is something virtually every other series did quite a bit. In DS9, they really had to push themselves in different ways, so some of the cultural questions and political questions it brought up are still to this day very, very strong pieces of work and things I think about.
“I would love to have some other Trek series come up where I can say, ‘I think we’re finally equalling the strengths of DS9—and without the occasional lows.’ But that remains a pipedream.”
Lynch joked he likely won’t be so eager to chat when Voyager hits its 25th anniversary in 2020. So as far as legacies go, he notes, DS9’s is not a bad one to have after all these years.

Since I hadnt kept any fish this year, we took some home. Theres a couple of lessons in there. Game and Parks counts 35 species, not including sunfish hybrids, as gamefish in Nebraska. At least 10 of them (I cant always sort out all those sunfish species) inhabit Lake Minatare. Several, including crappies, are great fish for the table. If you only fish for one species, youre missing some great opportunities. Even if you focus on walleyes, its a good idea to change gears once in awhile. That includes changing tactics. Despite all those fish that should be hungry after wintering under ice, we didnt find much by fishing near the bottom with jigs. The water was about 52 degrees still a bit cold. The walleyes might have had spawning on their minds. Or we might have done better by trolling closer to the surface, casting near the dam or working shallow water near the trees. We were using minnows to catch those crappies. When I switched to a bit of nightcrawler, I started catching bluegills. If youre not experimenting with different methods, youre missing opportunities.
