... and the DAY has been passed to the next and the desire to connect prevails .. though in a short while there shall be the selected work for the ‘breathing’ .. one that has remained in the structure and the culture of the land .. was in it from the very childhood, then life took over and there was an initiation later too .. almost at the same time as the beginning of the so called return to business professionally and the love and attention it received form the Ef and the public mass .. and now as time passes it has been begun once more ..

some matters repeat .. they design themselves in particular spot again again and again .. many feel the reason of some astrological stars, many others the day and the date .. but what needed to happen happened .. has been taken care of and we wait for the repair to occur .. but yes the occurrence when in the often is concerning not so much to the me but to the others ...

schedules undergo change and that disturbs .. it puts on hold the many works that needed to be done .. but we shall adjust .. life adjusts many a time and this is merely another such occasion ..

the human body is the remarkable element of its build .. it is built to survive and exist on its own .. to heal to function without any external elements .. it shall work well if not disturbed by external elements .. if we damage the interior by polluting its basic ingredients, it shall of course revolt and fall ill .. we make it ill .. ill does not make it ill .. it only cures despite the damage we do .. it cures on its own .. that is the excellence of the body .. we must take care of it .. the more we do the more it shall be with us , undiluted, pure and in the extended period of time for its living ..

Lohri (and Kites!)

My first venture out after the double whammy illnesses of last week was for a Lohri celebration with the wonderful drama students at Khalsa College. FYI: Lohri marks the end of the winter season and the start of the longer days. Lohri is celebrated to welcome the sun to the northern hemisphere. It is celebrated with bonfires, music, dancing…and kites! The students and their teacher Emanuel Singh invited us to join them at the college that day (Friday the 13th)- and when we arrived we found the group surrounding a campfire on the patio of the theatre department. We were offered traditional snacks for the holiday (a kind of peanut brittle- which was delicious) and roasted peanuts (throwing the empty shells into the fire.) The students sang, danced (even got us up for some dancing) and improvised rhyming verses that I believe included some gentle teasing of the two of us. It was a BLAST.

Traditionally, kites are flown on this day, and David and I had planned to go to the Trilium mall where we hoped to see many kites in flight from the glassed-in top floor. But it turned out to be the most foggy day we have had here so far, and the few kites flying were not even visible. (I felt so bad for the kids who had looked forward to this day!)  We went to see Avatar instead (and loved it.!) That night, as we drifted off to sleep, we could hear drums, singing, etc from the many bonfires in our neighborhood.

The next day was gorgeous and sunny (if chilly)- and the kites were out with a vengeance! I wish I could get a good photo or video of them- but the cameras on our phones are not powerful enough. There were literally hundreds of kites in the sky. We saw street vendors flying kites, and people on scooters flying kites as they drove! I’m happy to usher in longer days and (hopefully) warmer weather.

Bask in the Sun’s benevolence upwards and onwards

Benevolent Sankranti

Most of the festivals we celebrate are calculated in accordance with the Lunar calendar. Hence their dates are not fixed. However the Makar Sankranti festival is celebrated as per the Solar calendar and falls on January 14/15 every year. We offer obeisance to the Sun on Makar Sankranti. Why is that so? It seems that when man sought to find proof of God, he found it in the Sun. The Sun is said to be a Pratyaksh Devta because we can see it and feel its warmth and energy. We chant the Gayatri Mantra while praying on Makar Sankranti. Emulating the Sun’s benevolence towards all, we donate food, clothes, milk etc. The Sun doesn’t emit light for itself, plants don’t bear fruit for themselves … let us follow suit!

The Sun provides sustenance to all forms of life. It provides energy to plants for  photosynthesis. We get our food from the plants. So the Sun is an inexhaustible powerhouse of abundance and energy for all forms of life.

Makar Sankranti is considered most auspicious as it marks the upward movement of the Sun away from the Tropic of Capricorn; from the Southern Hemisphere, towards the Northern Hemisphere. It is also called Uttarayan i.e. the Sun moving towards Uttar Disha (North direction). It marks the entry of the Sun into Makar-Rashi i.e. Capricorn. This being the harvest festival in many states, the farmers celebrate their new crops and offer them to the Gods as thanksgiving and also share them with each other.

Makar Sankranti is also called Maghi, Bihu, Pongal, Shishur Saenkraat, Suggi Habba, etc. 

The celebrations vary slightly from state to state all over India. But they centre around prayers, feasting, dancing and singing. In the North, Makar Sankranti day is the day next after Lohri. We usually consume a lot of Til, Bhugga, Peanuts and Gacchak on Lohri as we huddle around a bonfire, sing and dance with family and friends. My mother would always make Chane ki dal ki khichdi and serve it with curd for breakfast on Maghi day. Til-Bhugga etc. generate a lot of heat in the body. And khichdi acts as a coolant thereafter!

This year being the International year of Millets, you can experiment with Bajre (pearl millet) ki khichdi which is definitely the yummiest khichdi in the world! Temper it with hot ghee and red chilli powder and have it with curd! Delicious!

In the run up to Makar Sankranti kite flying is another tradition. Besides the fun in flying kites, it compulsorily exposes us to the Sun. Having stayed indoors in the cold, foggy days of the North Indian winter, kite flying on a sunny Sankranti day is like applying balm on a wound! In the garb of culture and tradition, our health is also taken care of!

The best explanation of the word Lohri is Lo-Hari (Take Lord!), which translates to a prayer written by Sri Sathya Sai Baba, “Oh Lord! Take my Love and let it flow in fullness of devotion to Thee. Oh Lord! Take my hands and let them work incessantly for Thee. Oh Lord! Take my Soul and let it be merged in One with Thee. Oh Lord! Take my mind and thoughts, and let them be in tune with Thee. Oh Lord! Take my everything and let me be an Instrument for Thee.”

Our culture is designed such that after every few days/months there is a festival that brings an opportunity to celebrate life as well as thank God for His bounties and contemplate on the purpose of our Earthly sojourn.

The North is considered to be the direction of everything auspicious, so we celebrate the Sun journeying towards the North. Moving northwards means moving towards positive thoughts, good deeds etc. If man too starts moving towards thoughts of God, it amounts to the same thing. The real northward journey happens inside us!

Good Evening Everyone,

Happy Makar Sankranti to all of you🪁. I hope you have enjoyed flying kite today and must have enjoyed yesterday's Lohri festival as well🔥.

So, A few days ago, one of my cousins sent a meme to me which was related to feminism. At first, I couldn't understand what that meme was trying to convey. But, after stressing a bit on my mind I got the meaning of that meme. Here's that meme.

As I have been a Bio student, I could make out the difference or, you can say the real meaning behind the words, oxygen and oxxgen. Two of the chromosomes i.e. the X and the Y chromosomes determine the sex of a child at the time of birth. Females have two XX chromosomes while males have one X and one Y chromosome. It represents the male dominated patriarchal society that we all live in. I have heard of cases where people often blame women for giving the birth to a girl child but actually it is the men which are responsible for the sex of a child.

I came across some more memes which were as, why is it always "Walking" and not "Walqueen"? Why only "Mango"? Why not "Womango"? Why is it always "Parking" and not "Parqueen"? Feminists when they have to learn "History" and not "Herstory".

Okay, so, what do you understand by the term "Feminism"? Feminism doesn't mean one person's experiences are more important than another. Quite simply, feminism is about all genders having equal rights and opportunities.

According to Gloria Steinem, "A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men."

What I feel is that, now, it's high time that we have to change our mindset and way of thinking and also looking at things and people in society. When someone asks you about the favourite colour of girls, I am sure that the colour which most of you can think of is, "Pink" and, the irony here is that, it is not the favourite colour of most of the girls.

Though changes have taken place and are still in process and also there are women almost in every field now. They have even started getting respect and valued for their work. But still, there are many places where the change is still to come.

I came across one quote of Estee Lauder and felt it really heart touching, it goes as, "I never dreamed about success I worked for it "
