I just saw someone say that $35 per second of animation was normal, and I am appalled. As someone who works in animation, no it is not. That is practically free labor. For freelance, ranges of $100-$200 per second are more normal (freelance can be tricky because you have to judge your worth vs how much budget a project has etc etc etc), though it is always better to try and get a job that pays you hourly. Unfortunately, the industry is in a dark place atm. Very little jobs available and tons of layoffs. I can understand someone taking a job that offers so little. However, we should always be fighting for better conditions. Better pay, better hours, all of that, even with indie. If you want a project to have old Disney levels of animation, then you better be willing to pay the price. Else, learn more about limited animation and how that can tell a story with a small budget.

I've talked before about how, while there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, there is standout UNethical consumption that should be avoided so here are some tips I use as someone with a general vendetta against Amazon:

use the shopping tab on google instead of going straight to amazon when you want to buy something.

this will allow you to look through a variety of sellers that sell the item you're looking for. You can also sort by seller, price, condition, and other factors using this feature.

look everywhere else first. I pretty much only click on Amazon when I've exhausted all of the other options on the shopping tab.

The Better Business Bureau is your friend. Some non-Amazon websites can be sketchy as hell. If the business is based in the U.S., Mexico, or Canada, the BBB is basically the mother of all review sites. If you suspect a company is suppressing negative reviews, or if they don't post them at all, check with the BBB to see if the business has a page and if people have complained.

You can also look up "is [website] a scam". This is a bit jankier and less official but it does work. Usually if a website is conning people out of their money someone has posted to somewhere complaining about it.

Choose smaller sellers if applicable.

Obviously if you're looking for a specific item it's probably only sold on a certain store's website, but if you're looking for unique pieces, it's actually fairly fulfilling to buy from a smaller seller. When you buy from places like Ebay and Etsy, or from smaller websites owned by the seller, you're handing most of that money over to a real person like you who will go and spend it on things they want and need. Sellers are also genuinely happy and grateful when something sells, my mom has been a seller on Ebay for years and she still gets excited when she makes a sale.

If an Etsy seller has a personal website, buy from there instead. This is more of an anti-corporation tip than a specific anti-Amazon tip.

Sites like Etsy still take big fees from their sellers which can make business more challenging and result in sellers not being paid properly for their work. Personal sites help reduce this so sellers will often promote them on their shop page. If you like your money to go into the hands of real people and not corporations, buy from their personal website instead.

Take notice when artists advertise their shops here on Tumblr. It can be easy to school by someone asking for money but a lot of people on here sell genuinely amazing art. @/cypric-rat-hyperfixation, @/dappermouth, @/pangur-and-grim, @/pidgie-core, @/ultrainfinitepit, and @/pikaole are just a few people I can think of who sell their art and it's usually cheaper than buying the same mass produced painting that everyone has in their house.

Switch out your Amazon wishlist for a Throne wishlist. One of my biggest pet peeves about leaving amazon was no longer having a wishlist to display on social media that people could actually buy from. Throne filled that role for me. Copy a link for the item you want, click "add gift", paste the link, adjust the price if needed, and bam, now anyone can but it for you. You can even set up crowdfunding for items costing over $10. It's also sex worker friendly and allows you to have NSFW items on your list if you choose!

Finally, understand that there are just some things you won't be able to find elsewhere. Don't beat yourself up for buying a non-essential item from Amazon once in a blue moon. Amazon is a massive overarching corporation that can be extremely hard to avoid especially if you need to shop for things at cheaper prices. The overall goal is to reduce the money given to them and increase the money given to other sellers to send a message that our favor with Amazon is waning and they need to change things to win it back.

This is probably going to be a little sacrilegious but something that I'm finding is that when I play IS3, I am actually enjoying myself a lot. Honestly, I'm enjoying myself a lot more than I was playing IS2. This isn't to say that IS3 is perfect or anything, or even than IS2 is bad, but I find that I'm enjoying my time in IS3 just a lot more.

Now keep in mind I'm not really a hard mode grinder by any means. I didn't enjoy the difficulty mechanics in IS1 very much, and their return in IS2 really did not inspire me with much desire to tackle IS2 on a harder difficulty. IS3's difficulty is a bit...infamous for being a bit much, and honestly I'm kind of content with just poking my toes into the water in the future if I feel I want to. If you asked me to do A15 Izumik or die, I think i'd take the gun personally.

The point here is that I'm taking both of these themes from their base standpoint, and that means on the surface level that IS3 is just going to be easier. Two of IS3's unique squads (Mind Over Matter and People-Oriented) not only feel stronger than any squad in IS2, but they're dramatically more interesting to play. You also start off with significantly higher buffs in IS3 over IS2. You have stronger statistical buffs, you have more resources, you have the frankly crazy perfect clear about 8 Max HP buff, and the new node types, all of which are good.

I don't really want to come in from the difficulty angle, although it is maybe unavoidable that more runs in IS3 for me feel like they actually finish compared to IS2. This is partly due to difficulty and partly do to factors that extend into the design of stages themselves.

I will summarize my thoughts here and maybe make a point later on to elaborate them in a different post

-IS3 gives you more opportunities to develop runs, mostly through the use of keys -Keys fuck, and honestly I will probably enjoy IS4 even more given it uses keys in a much cooler way. Having more control over a run feels really nice -Map design in IS3 is a LOT better than in IS2. A lot of IS2's map design is based on IS1, which I'm going to be brave and say is by and large total shit, and IS2 relies a LOT on what are basically pranks -Seriously, fuck the Lost Colossus stage in IS2. -This makes it so its a lot easier to get a sense of flow in IS3. You can look at a stage in IS3, and know how to reasonable tackle it. This isn't consistently true in IS2. Shit in IS2 just fucking, moves. -Also the fact that IS2 kept the absolutely awful Bear and Duck stages where you just contend with increasing numbers of bullshit, and decided to make one version with fucking Sandbeasts makes me really ticked off. These stages are so much better in IS3 -Corrosion is a significantly better mechanic than Sanity. I am not a Sanity defender and I think it says something that I consider Scarlet Singers so dangerous you have to always account for them -Granted Sea Skimmers also suck dick, Low-Altitude Hovering my beloathed -Paranoia Illusion is a much fairer boss than Lucian, Blood Diamond. I feel like if IS2 had an A15 people would legit hate this boss. You're generally priced into trying to kill him on the first pass or develop enough life to deal with leaks from the defender side. It's never worth actually developing that side if he breaks the roadblocks. -I also like Ishar'mla more than Troupe Mouthpiece. Mouthpiece's stage has a really baller design, but it is maybe the ending out of the 8 in the first two IS that requires the most specific set of units. -Also unlocking Ishar'mla is generally a bit easier than Mouthpiece and doesn't require you giving up a boss relic and THEN hitting a random event

But like, IS3 isn't perfect. It has its bad stages and frankly really annoying bullshit (Territorial Tendencies and Ubi bona somnia are quite bad as Emergency Operations). The Light mechanic is annoyingly useless and not even really fun to interact with. Izumik is uh

thank you! i'm no expert so i'll only be talking about my own experience and what i did when i opened commishes last year :^]

1. set up your pricing, samples, and tos ok this one's kinda obvious bc you gotta show people info on what stuff you could draw and how much will it be! you could either make a carrd or info document for this. feel free to look at other artists' info docs/commish carrds too to see how they formatted theirs so you could get an idea.

as for pricing, i think looking at how other artists' price their work too could help in deciding how your gonna price your works. i personally looked at other artists who i think have a similar style to how i draw and factored in how long i usually work on something when pricing my stuff.

2. establish a limit/amount of slots for commissions the last thing i wanted to happen when opening commissions was to be overwhelmed, thus, making me unable to start on any work bc of task paralysis, i didn't want to bite more than i can chew so i made sure to know and limit how much stuff i can draw.

i limited myself to 8 slots, under it are 4 slots for sketches, 2 for both flat-colored drawings and shaded drawings. i knew drawing with colors would take a lot more time so they're in a lesser amount compared to sketches which i confidently think i could do quicker.

of course, as you grow more confident with your workflow/process/speed, you're free to have more slots or no slots at all! even make a waitlist or something.

3. communicate clearly with your clients got busy and can't work on your commission at the moment? tell it to your client! people are nice and pretty understanding when life gets in the way so don't be shy or embarrassed to say that you can't work on their piece right now. be clear too or even give an estimated date of when you can continue it.

4. make a form where people can submit commish requests i didn't do this the first time so communication with clients took a lot more time and energy than needed, so make life easier for yourself and make a form that asks everything you need to know about your client's commission: the commish description, number of characters, reference pictures, style of drawing, etc.

Book Review #9 of 2024--

Cursed Cruise by Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren. Rating: 3.5 stars.

Read from February 7th to 9th.

Before I get into the review, a quick thank you to the publishers over at Random House Children's and NetGalley for allowing me access to the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. Cursed Cruise is the second book in the Horror Hotel series. In this one, we follow our Ghost Gang as they board the Queen Anne in an attempt to learn more about its haunting and possibly get picked up for a TV show pilot. But things start going wrong the moment their resident psychic, Chrissy, boards. With a hundred deaths to her name, what if Queen Anne isn't just haunted? What if she's cursed? Cursed Cruise comes out on March 19th and is available for pre-order now.

There is so much I love about this group of ghost hunters. In this one, they've just graduated from high school and are set to film aboard the most haunted ship to sail the seas. I loved seeing the interactions between Emma and Kiki. Their relationship still feels so new and having them try to tip toe around their chaperone (AKA Kiki's mother) while also wanting to be accepted as a couple by her was sweet. The dynamic between Chrissy and Chase was good but not the romantic subplot I was really there for. I liked the mystery in this one. I kind of loved that we got a couple of mysteries for the price of one.

I would have loved so much more detail about those mysteries though. And that's a complaint I think I also had with the first one. The world and characters and their shenanigans are so much fun but this book is just so short. I think it's good at maintaining the YA age range and not being one of those YA books that's really an Adult book marketed as YA so maybe the length of the book factors into that feeling. It was more plot heavy than anything else which I don't love but it's also something you have to have if you're going to be in the Mystery/Thriller genre. I think if you had given me another 50 to 75 pages to dive into the meat of everything this would be a solid 4 or more star rating from me.

Overall, this was such a fun and quick read for me. I've been struggling with my reading time for the past few months since I transferred for work and that has meant a longer commute plus longer hours. And yet this was something that felt so easy to make the time for. A fast paced mystery ride that just keeps you invested.

If you haven't been living under a rock or hibernating like a polar bear for the past decade or so, you've probably heard of BOTOX® and are wondering if it's worth the hype. Here’s the inside scoop on why BOTOX® is the answer to so many patients’ wrinkle woes.

Wrinkles develop for many reasons, many of them related to the fact that your skin loses elasticity and collagen as you age. That's when those pesky lines and wrinkles start to show up. While some creases and crinkles form on their own because of volume loss, others develop and deepen due to repetitive muscle activity: smiling, squinting, furrowing your brow—that sort of thing.

Enter BOTOX®, the brand name for an FDA-approved medication made from botulinum toxin. It was initially developed as a treatment for eyelid spasms, but was accidentally discovered to treat wrinkles as well. While numbing cream is an option, it's not really necessary in terms of time or expense. Also, the entire procedure is incredibly fast. BOTOX® injections are usually completed in less than 15 min—so before you even realize that your face has been near a needle, it's already finished. Remember, the medication takes around five days to start working, so avoid getting BOTOX® done immediately before a big event or occasion! In other words, give yourself a little time for the wrinkles to start relaxing.

Aftercare Advice

Keep upright for the first four hours after having facial injectables, avoid swimming for two to three days, don't fly for 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours, and avoid saunas for the next two weeks. These precautions can help prevent the spread of the ingredients to other areas of the face and maximize your results. From here, you can expect the effects to last for about three or four months, after which you can come back again for another round of injections to maintain your more youthful look!

Urban Supernatural Sims; Magic Systems Part 1

Elemental systems in Second Life urban supernatural sims are outdated.

What do I mean by that? First we have to understand what they are! So elemental systems are nothing new if you're familiar with tabletop. Generally, most will have various abilities associated with them (Fire casts fire, water manipulates water, air can make it windy -- you get the idea). Most tabletop system use this as a way to balance their world out via their character sheets where they interact with attributes, feats, and other factors (environmental, spatial, etc.) As such, dice rolls come into play. However when you don't have any clear listings about how complex something should be to cast -- that's where things become an issue. Balance only works when you have the criteria to set up that balance. With no examples or charts, people often rely on people present and sometimes admins will say if it succeeds or not. While what admins say goes, they're not infallible of failing to interpret the text. All in all, though, it's meant to be a fairly simple system that's loosely based around World of Darkness-like themes. Now why are they outdated? Because of what I mentioned -- there isn't any universal criteria that both roleplayer and admin can 100% agree on. Riverside, Crescent Valley, Lakewood Pointe, VirtueNV, Vexford -- they all use roughly the same systems with a modicum of differences. There's also the issue of choking the creative muscle when it comes to sub-magics, especially when they overlap. Ex; Sigils and enchantments. Enchantments can have sigils, but not all sigils are enchantments. They're not the thing that's being used to enchant, it's the other materials present. They're also not just for enchantments. Generally these elemental systems will have you choose two or three different elements to play with, but none of them really expand beyond that you're 'drawing from that particular element'. Not only that, it takes away the grit of what a lot of us love about magical tropes; where's the ritualism? Where's the occultism? Where's the actual progression? Some admins will let you progress into additional elements, but this is just an illusion OF progression. In the end there's no great revelations to your character -- no mysteries. There's just those simple, miniscule elements that also try to give an illusion of balance without a proper framework. Don't get me wrong -- I love World of Darkness, but there's only ever going to be one World of Darkness. Likewise with DnD, Pathfinder, etc. Hell, the people who ran Crescent Valley did the same system in Lakewood Pointe, and then again in Vexford. They even used the same website with minor adjustments between every iteration. Which I'll go more into the criticisms of those sims in one post eventually. The facts are, this system is overdone and it is DEAD. If I wanted that kind of system, I'd be on New Haven By Night which works off of the old World of Darkness systems and has a framework. But what can you do differently? Magic is always going to be complex. There shouldn't be insta-gib magics. Resurrection spells? Should come at a price. For that matter, all magic should have a price. Create the structure around those prices. Spell components, unpredictability of the workings, maybe even shaving some years off the caster's life -- there's literally so much creativity in systems like THAT than this watered down, half-assed World of Darkness-like crap that's beaten the horse dead. For those that would say, "Why don't YOU build a sim then?" are deflecting from the issue. In fact, while I've got ZERO interest in Unnatural -- their magic system is pretty open in terms of how magic works and gives the player a modicum of wiggle room to be creative. When you're restrictive on magic, it just kills the inspiration and drive for those of us who drink deeply of the esoteric shenanigans that are actually balanced. If you give your witches and casters more to work with? We're more than likely to stick by your sim until the day you close your doors if you give us the chance.
