Thank you for the link to the white strawberry cockle debacle!
@hellsitegenetics is my favorite new gimmick blog btw and everyone should definitely check it out.
The “debacle” is that three posts in a row that they analyzed to find DNA resulted in the same organism: the white strawberry cockle.
I do not think this is a coincidence.
I think someone very carefully made three separate requests designed the get the same result
But I am wondering what y’all think:

Custody Battle--Four Seasons
The Ritual of Propagation has succeeded. Aziraphale and Crowley are ready to welcome the newest member of Their Own Side. But the Archangels have other plans. No young angel has ever been raised outside their closely guided care, and they have no intention of changing that.
As Aziraphale, Crowley, and Kokabiel get ready for breakfast, their peaceful morning is abruptly interrupted. Their next visitor has arrived...
(Chapter has CWs for mild violence and panic attacks. Whole fic has warnings for noncon, emotional manipulation, and more--please check the tags carefully!)
Read it on AO3!
Aziraphale hummed cheerfully as he chopped ingredients, keeping an eye on the sizzling sausage and hot oils dancing in the pan.
He’d started making crepes, as planned, but he’d found the scent of the batter… uninspiring. Even when he switched from strawberries to a lovely mix of raspberries, blackberries, and loganberries picked from the garden—a bit of tartness to counter the sweetness… well, one sniff and he knew that wouldn’t do at all.
But as he rummaged about the kitchen, he soon discovered what he was in the mood for.
The sunlight streamed through the windows as he set to work, shifting the enormous pan over the gas flame. The perfect morning for a meal on the garden patio, soaking in… everything.
“Mmmmmh…” Crowley sighed, coming up behind him and sliding his arms around Aziraphale’s waist. “I think I called it. Those are some funny looking crepes.”
“Oh, hush, you.” Aziraphale expertly shifted the sausages to make room for the bacon. “I thought a little change was in order, and Kokabiel likes watching the pan, don’t you my dear?”
They bounced excitedly across his wing, not leaping as high as yesterday, instead trying to match the spattering, cracking sounds of the oil in the pan.
The scents filled the room, warm, savoury, and crisp. Sausage and thick back bacon, as well as black and white puddings. Now he just had to sear the tomatoes, caramelise the mushrooms, fry the bread, then take care of the baked beans and eggs. He’d even managed a bit of laver bread, though something was still missing. A bit of trout, perhaps, or some cockles…
“You sure you want fried food?” Crowley asked, one hand running idly along his wing. “How’s your stomach?”
“Much improved, thank you for asking.” Aziraphale nudged the bacon, making sure it cooked properly. “My appetite has quite recovered; not a hint of nausea to be found.” He flashed a smile over his shoulder. “And how are you?”
“Awesome,” Crowley said with a lopsided grin. He’d changed his clothes, now sporting a snug-fitting lacy black corset top under one of Aziraphale’s dress shirts, unbuttoned and flowing loose. They, and a few mis-matched necklaces, worked together to draw attention towards his bosom, which appeared to have grown even larger. “Shower was a good idea.”
“Naturally. It was one of mine.”
Crowley snickered, leaning closer to press against his angel. “Not your only good idea…” He kissed Aziraphale’s cheek, damp hair brushing both their faces.
Aziraphale immediately shoved him away. “What—what is that horrid— stench?” He pressed his hand to his nose, trying to block it out.
“What? I—I don’t—” Crowley sniffed his own hair. “Not me. Did the eggs go off?”
“I haven’t started them yet—and I know what rotten eggs—this isn’t foul, it’s…” He tried to pull his hand away and… no, there was the nausea, back in full force. “Oh!” Aziraphale slammed down the spatula, stepping away from the stove. “It’s no good.” He jerked open the nearest window, taking one deep gulp of air after another, hoping that would rinse the horrid malodour from his memory.
“I… I guess this is a new shampoo,” Crowley admitted, twisting his hair up into a knot, “but it barely has any scent!”
“Well. One of us is mistaken.” Another breath, and his mind started to clear. But his stomach still churned uneasily, and the thought of standing over the stove for another twenty minutes made his knees weak. “If it isn’t the shampoo, it must be something.”
A brush of fingers running up his back. “Do you need me to—”
“I need you to give me space!” He swatted Crowley away, fanning his face with the other hand. “It’s—I’m sorry, I just need you to… get rid of that smell!”
Brow furrowed in confusion, Crowley sniffed the loose shirt collar, then bent almost double trying to do the same for the low-cut corset top. “I… I tried one of those little potpourri things in my drawer? Is that it?”
“I can’t even think!” Aziraphale pushed past him, sprinting up the stairs. “I will find that scent and exorcise it from this house!”
“Angel, you can’t be—wait!”
“No! You’ll thank me when it’s gone. Good Lord, Crowley…”
“Just… leave my deodorant, alright?”
Aziraphale paused at the top of the stairs, leaning against the bedroom door as he fanned himself, chasing away the summer heat. A distant, hazy thought slipped across the back of his mind, not quite fully formed. Confusion, protest, and a sense of curiosity.
“Well, I thought it was entirely necessary,” he grumbled in response to Kokabiel, still trying to get the awful smell off his tongue. “Really, he has no sense of moderation or—or anything when it comes to trends and fashion. If the humans declared walking around with kippers in their jackets to be cool, Daddy would have them bursting from every pocket. Absolutely insupportable.”
The curiosity drifted away, turning in slow circles, then rushed back, nudging an impression, the ghost of a memory, into his mind. For a second, Aziraphale could smell it again—too chemical, too sweet, and an undercurrent that was downright astringent. The memory alone was enough to make his stomach roll. “Yes! Precisely that! And we can’t let Daddy get away with it, can we?”
“You know I can hear you, right?” Crowley appeared at the bottom of the stairs, waving the spatula at his husband. “I’m not going to take this from someone who hasn’t changed his cologne in five years!”
“A classic scent never goes out of fashion!”
Kokabiel’s attention began to drift away, unable to follow the conversation. But they quickly brightened as another memory rose up in their mind: clematis and jasmine, magnolia and sweet alyssum, and over it all, the smell of honeysuckle: sweet and heady, citrus and vanilla.
“Yes!” Aziraphale beamed at the youngling. “Oh, look how clever you are. Yes, we want Daddy to smell like the garden, not like a chemical plant explosion. Why don’t you set things up outside, dearest, and air yourself out?”
“Fine, fine, right after I finish cooking your breakfast.” He pointed the spatula like a sword. “You’re lucky that I love you.”
“I truly am,” Aziraphale agreed wholeheartedly. “Mind you don’t burn anything.”

The cake... what are the odds that the chosen colors (besides the white from the cream) are green and blue?
I mean, it would make more sense dark/brown (chocolate), pink/red (strawberry), yellow (vanila), orange... or blue and/or green colored cream combined with other colors.
But, not... they chose ONLY GREEN AND BLUE.
And the antis may say we are reading too much and making things up. But everybody in this fandom have known for years the association of green and blue with destiel/cockles. People leave green and blue hearts in Jensen and Misha social media (and we all ask them not to do that!). Bibros and wincels called us once "greenblues"... everybody know this association.
What are the odds??
And the Eiffel tower... that's more far-fetched. It could be a coincidence, but I wonder... I guess the company managing the lighting of the tower can rent their services. And light up the tower according to different events. So... maybe someone paid for these services 👀. How much does it cost? I know Misha is rich, but still could be a lot of money. Or maybe Creation did it (yeah, I know they are assholes, but maybe there are some "insiders"...). Who knows... I hope to know the truth some day.

Special Note: Conservas
The WSJ did an article recently on conservas  – tinned seafood from Spain or Portugal – that sent us down a delicious rathole.
Tumblr media
We’ve been doing taste tests of the endless varieties – bonito del norte ventresca (white tuna belly), bluefin ventresca, bonito del norte lomo laminado, squid, octopus, anchoves, sardines, mackerel, trout, cod, stickleback, mussels, razorback clams, cockles, scallops, baby eel, roe of every kind, in olive oil, Galician sauce or brine, small and large, fried and unfried, it goes on and on.
Our favorite brands so far have been Conservas de Cambados, Jose Gourmet, Donostia, La Brujula, Don Bocarte, Ortiz, and Ramon Pena, and our favorite types have been tuna belly (yellowfin, bluefin, albacore), white tuna, octopus, small sardines, razor clams, and cockles, in olive oil or escabeche.
While you can eat it on its own, there’s almost as many ways to eat conservas as there are varieties – it reminds me a little of Danish smørrebrød in that way.
Some thought starters on your tapas:
Base (e.g. crostini, other bread, chicharrones, crackers, roasted seaweed, pasta, potato chips, small potatoes, beans, tortilla, naan, pizza, rice, fried rice, saffron rice, salad, lettuce, no base/ceviche in tin)
Savory (e.g. butter, lime crema, mayo, cream cheese, parmesan, chopped/sliced boiled egg, fried egg, avocado, hummus, feta, manchego cheese, goat cheese, ricotta, cream cheese, tuna salad with bonito del norte, white bean puree, curry yogurt, sardine rillette, tuna melt, pesto, spinach sauce, soft scrambled egg, roast garlic pate, sauce vierge, saffron aioli, ajo blanco in shot glass)
Citrus/acid (e.g. orange slices, preserved lemon, lemon zest, sundried tomato, tomato pulp, diced tomato, roasted cherry tomato, squeeze of lemon/lime juice, sherry/red wine vinegar, lemon garlic sauce, romesco sauce, pisto/ratatouille, mango)
Sweet (e.g. jam, honey, strawberries)
Herbs (e.g. parsley, mint, cilantro, basil, tarragon, dill)
Greens (e.g. fennel, cucumber, radish, arugula, spinach, sprouts, microgreens, radicchio)
Onion (e.g. green onion, slivered shallot/onion)
Crunch (e.g. chopped nuts, slivered almonds, pine nuts, pistachio, sesame seeds, bread crumbs)
Kick (e.g. grated garlic, capers, guindilla/piquillo peppers, jalapeno, roe, asian chili crisp, wasabi mayo, manzanilla olives, olive tapenade, pickle, relish, mustard, kimchi, salsa red/verde, pepper flakes, piment d'espelette, banderillas, hot sauce, artichoke, diced red pepper)
Flavor (e.g. sprinkle of good grey salt, pepper, paprika, olive oil, roasted seaweed pieces, sliced white asparagus, za'atar, oregano, cast-iron charring)
You obviously don’t need to include all of these but a tin of conservas is great to have when you’re famished since it’ll go with whatever you have on hand.

This WSJ recipe for roasted peppers and white tuna ventresca was delicious, though it took longer than I’d like:

CARBOHYDRATES AND ITS EFFECT ON HEALTH
Tumblr media
Carbohydrate foods
Carbohydrate-rich foods facilitate, after eating, the rapid rise in blood sugar levels (blood glucose). This and many more of its disadvantages are the reason it is advised to be taken in lesser quantities when on a ketogenic diet, it is important to study the workings and some key symptoms when on a ketogenic diet.
Consequently, although carbohydrates can be a quick source of energy for the body, the health benefits are low, so it is advised not to include them frequently on the menu.

Foods with few carbohydrates are what you can eat in the ketogenic diet, high in fat, and often used to lose weight.
Notwithstanding these values, if you suffer from diabetes mellitus you should take into account when preparing your meal, in addition to the grams of carbohydrates that each of the foods have, also the glycemic index (GI).
Glycemic food index (GI). Good and bad carbohydrates
The glycemic index measures the intensity and speed with which foods containing carbohydrates raise the level of glucose in the blood (glycemia) after ingestion.
Consequently, foods with a high glycemic index raise blood glucose faster than others with a low glycemic index.
For example, whole wheat bread will have a lower GI than white bread, or pastries, which have it higher.
Diabetics should eat foods with a low glycemic index and only occasionally, better not daily, can ingest those of medium GI for what these lists will be useful, accompanied by the corresponding suggestions of their specialist (doctor or nutritionist).

As far as destinations and ease for accomodating large groups, this place is a winner with several areas indoors, outdoors, sectioned booths and private dining rooms available for use.
The main sell here is location location location (Cockle Bay Wharf to be precise) and so it doesnt have to go to extremes when it comes to the menu and with it’s large foot traffic of tourists can get by serving crowd pleasers.
$46 gets you the 350g grain fed New York  Sirloin served with sweet potato chips and Portobello mushroom and a gravy of your choice (red wine jus pictured here).   If you’re being charged that much for your cut of meat to be cooked to your preference, then that’s automatically a given.
The service staff are very accommodating  and personable and somehow a bottle of white ordered 5 minutes ago arrives before the red that was ordered almost 20 minutes ago.  It’s a group of 10 who are not the easiest to coordinate orders with, it’s peak Christmas dining season so there’s plenty of blame to go around.   Generally the synchronocity between our main service attendant and two others supporting our table work it like clockwork.
$39 is within the average range of a Darling Harbour main, and here it gets you the Grilled barramundi served with pea-mint puree, potato gratin, fennel – broad beans  salad, crispy pancetta, and red vein sorrel leaves.
The wine selection ranges from $55-$170 a bottle.   It’s curated to complement the pastas, risotto, land and sea menu items.
Tiramisu and Pannacotta are done beautifully cementing the authority as an Italian restaurant destination this side of the harbour.   Desserts range from $14.50-$27.50.  A standout is the tuile basket which confuses the palette with a filling of balsamic caramel strawberries using their housemade mascarpone to neutralise the sour twang that coats the sweetness.
Great service personality and atmosphere attracting prime views of the harbour sunset.

Running Out of Children, a South Korea School Enrolls Illiterate Grandmothers
GANGJIN COUNTY, South Korea — Every morning on her way to school, Hwang Wol-geum, a first grader, rides the same yellow bus as three of her family members: One is a kindergartner, another a third grader and the other a fifth grader.
Ms. Hwang is 70 — and her schoolmates are her grandchildren.
Illiterate all her life, she remembers hiding behind a tree and weeping as she saw her friends trot off to school six decades ago. While other village children learned to read and write, she stayed home, tending pigs, collecting firewood and looking after younger siblings. She later raised six children of her own, sending all of them to high school or college.
Yet it always pained her that she couldn’t do what other mothers did.
“Writing letters to my children, that’s what I dreamed of the most,” Ms. Hwang said.
Help came unexpectedly this year from the local school that was running out of school-age children and was desperate to fill its classrooms with students.
South Korea’s birthrate has been plummeting in recent decades, falling to less than one child per woman last year, one of the lowest in the world.
The hardest hit areas are rural counties, where babies have become an increasingly rare sight as young couples migrate en masse to big cities for better paying jobs.
Like other rural schools, Daegu Elementary, in Ms. Hwang’s district, has seen its students dwindle. When Ms. Hwang’s youngest son, Chae Kyong-deok, 42, attended it in the 1980s, it had 90 students in each grade. Now, the school has only 22 students in total, including one student each in its fourth- and fifth-grade classes.
This year, the worst calamity of all struck the district.
“We went around villages looking for just one precious kid to enroll as a first grader,” said the principal, Lee Ju-young. “There was none.”
So Ms. Lee and local residents, desperate to save the 96-year-old school, came up with an idea: How about enrolling older villagers who wanted to learn to read and write?
Ms. Hwang and seven other women, aged 56 to 80, stepped forward, with at least four others asking to be enrolled next year.
For younger people who want to stay in the area, the future of their town depended on keeping the school alive.
“Who would start a family here if there were no school?” asked Noh Soon-ah, 40, whose husband — one of Ms. Hwang’s sons — quit his job in an auto parts factory in a big city and resettled his family here five years ago, to succeed his parents’ farming business. “Children are what brings laughter and vitality to a town.”
The local education office warmed to the idea, and Ms. Hwang started attending classes last month.
Like many first graders on their first day, Ms. Hwang cried. But these were tears of joy.
”I couldn’t believe this was actually happening to me,” she said. “Carrying a school bag has always been my dream.”
Once overcrowded with students, the seaside campus of Daegu Elementary looked almost empty on a recent visit. Camellia, sweet brier and pine trees surrounded its deserted sandy playground. After a rain, cherry trees were shedding their blossoms.
Inside the two-story school building, children and grandmothers changed into slippers and walked hallways decorated with locally produced jade-green celadon vases.
In the first-grade classroom, Ms. Hwang and two other grandmothers toiled laboriously, determined to learn to read and write.
Pencil in hand, they chanted the 14 consonants and 10 vowels of the Korean alphabet as their teacher, Jo Yoon-jeong, 24, wrote them one by one on the white board. They took dictation on words like “aunt,” “fisherman” and “raccoon” with their slow and crooked penmanship.
Between writing exercises, Ms. Jo turned on an upbeat song — “There Is Nothing Wrong With My Age!” — and led a dance routine for the giggling grandmothers to follow.
“School is so much fun,” Ms. Hwang said.
Her son, Kyong-deok, agreed: “My mother has become a much happier person since she began going to school. Smiles hardly seem to leave her face.”
Ms. Hwang’s county, Gangjin, here on the southwestern tip of South Korea’s coast, is typical of the rural areas left behind in South Korea’s rapid industrialization.
Gangjin’s last major industry, potterymaking, died when plastics began replacing crockery in Korean kitchens in the 1970s. Its rapidly aging population now makes a living growing strawberries and mulberries or picking oysters, cockles and octopuses from tidal flats.
Park Jong-sim, 75, is a champion octopus catcher in her village. But on a recent day, she was more worried about falling behind in her elementary-school class.
She blinked her eyes as she tried to keep them focused on the notebook, and occasionally took her reading glasses off to wipe tears caused by eye fatigue. Enunciating words was also difficult. To practice her penmanship, she woke up before dawn.
“My memory, hand and tongue don’t work like I wish,” Ms. Park said. “But I am going to learn to write before I die. You don’t know how I feel when I go to a government office, they ask me to fill out a form and the only thing I know how to write is my name.”
Going to school became a distant dream for Ms. Park after her father died when she was 8. She spent her childhood collecting sea mustard, raising silkworms and harvesting ramie plants.
Decades ago, Korean families often focused what little resources they had on educating their sons. Many girls were expected to stay home and look after younger siblings while their parents worked outside.
Ms. Hwang said her father found a new wife after her mother gave birth to five daughters but no son. Her stepmother refused to send Ms. Hwang to school and scoffed at the idea of “teaching a daughter letters” when her father tried to show her how to read at home.
Being illiterate brought many humiliations later in life. Posting packages was always a problem because she could not write addresses.
Years ago, she and her husband, Chae Jan-ho, 72, were visiting their son in Seoul, the capital, when they got separated in the bustling subway. Ms. Hwang could not read any of the signs and was hopelessly lost until a stranger helped her find her way.
Now she and her fellow students are determined to make up for lost time. One of the women who returned to elementary school this year had dropped out of school as a fifth grader in the 1970s, when she was sent away to become a live-in housemaid for a rich family in order to support her own.
“They are eager to learn,” said Ms. Jo, the teacher, about her first-grade students. “They are probably the only students here asking for more homework.”
Unlike other classrooms, the first graders’ classroom has a sofa and a heated mattress. During breaks, the older women sat on the warm mattress and buried their feet under blankets. They also kept a basket of candies for the second graders next door who occasionally came to visit.
But Ms. Hwang felt bad that she was in school during a busy strawberry harvesting season. To make up for it, she rose at 4 a.m. and helped her husband, son and daughter-in-law pick strawberries before going to school.
Ms. Hwang has already hatched an ambitious plan.
“I am going to run for president of the village women’s society,” she said. “People used to ask me to run, but I always declined. It’s a job for someone who can read and write.”

Where to Eat During Summer Restaurant Week 2017
Winter Restaurant Week is largely intended to give a seasonal boost to eateries, whose bottom line is heavily affected by a widespread unwillingness to venture outside in the frigid cold.  Yet no such incentive is needed during summer, when city-dwellers seek any and all opportunities to escape the cloistered confines of their apartments.  And since dining out is a preferred warm weather pastime, the annual promotion — running from July 24th-August 18th — affords ample opportunity to do so for a song, thanks to three-course $29 lunches and $42 dinners at some of NYC’s most respectable restaurants.
Batard
239 West Broadway Tribeca,New York 10013
(212) 219-2777
Score a Restaurant Week coup by nabbing a resy at Drew Nieporent’s Tribeca triumph, Batard, where Markus Glocker constructs Modern European courses that hardly qualify as discount dining.  Think Beets “Linzer” tinged with currants and crème fraiche, Spigarello Risotto dotted with broccoli rabe and preserved ramps, and Duck Egg Crème Brulee, accented with bing cherries and chamomile sherbet.

Buttermilk Channel

(718) 852-8490
Not only are they offering reduced-priced meals (expect dishes like Flatbread with charred ramps and huckleberries, Lasagna lined with eggplant and summer squash, and Banana Pudding pelted with salted caramel popcorn), Buttermilk is also taking part in Restaurant Week’s first ever tasting series, by hosting a ticketed, $75 per person wine pairing dinner, with proceeds benefiting City Harvest, Citymeals on Wheels, and Food Bank NYC.
