omg actually keen to hear ur yellowface thoughts once uve synthesised them... im a chronic rf kuang hater but i also do read her books every time so i would love to know what u thoughtttt
hello omg thank you for asking about this, i would love to know your thoughts too actually!
so it's been a day, i was able to sleep on it... this won't be the most serious review ever but i'll freely share both what i've been mulling over and my thoughts as i type. i think the book is good enough for what i personally thought it would be, which is a silly off-kilter story with a very compelling premise. the bare minimum i initially knew, which is that some white girl stole her dead asian-american friend's work, was enough to intrigue me. what i didn't understand was the hype around how "insane" it is on tiktok (which i will readily admit is where i found out about the book's existence) and i had my hesitations to hold it to that standard. turns out i was right to be hesitant. there was room for so much more. like i understand the pov and insights are deliberately limited and unreliable bc of the main character herself, but here's one example: when juniper made a remark on athena not knowing what it's like to be poor, i expected those thoughts to play a larger role in the story or go a bit deeper, but they were left as few among the many bits and pieces of surface level commentary and somewhat valid criticism against athena and it kind of got lost in the mix. this is such a shame especially because it's clear juniper is big on her own family's dynamics and financial situation, so it could've been such a great comparison point (?) for her to really dig into when it came to her resentment against athena.
i feel like that was the biggest missed opportunity in my eyes because when i read the author bio at the end of the book, i was surprised to find that rf kuang herself is from yale. i didn't know who she was before reading the book, this is my introduction to her and i went in completely blind. knowing a bit of her background now honestly leaves a sour taste in my mouth because this time the story feels too self-referential the way some taylor swift songs can be (and i enjoy tswift btw lol). but i don't know for sure since i still haven't looked into her that much. this is why i would LOVE to know why you're a hater bc i feel we'd have similar reasons
also the buildup to the ending and the ending itself were both so underwhelming that it dampened some of the fun i had in earlier parts of the story. like i was enjoying this white woman going kind of crazy but kuang's stab at the uncanny fell so flat i literally could not stop just thinking about perfect blue 1997 and how i did not pick up the same suspense here. not that they have to be the same at all, i just live like this. also in line with this so much of the book feels chronically online. at first i appreciated how online spaces were so heavily embedded in the story but by the halfway point i was like, um.... i thought this was a satire on the publishing industry, not glimpses of publishing interspersed between losing ur mind over twitter and goodreads LOL.
for now this is all i have to say. fun book! i can tell rf kuang is skilled in her own right. i enjoyed the pacing and the writing style, it was such an easy read and there's nothing wrong with that. nothing i want to take too seriously or sink my teeth too deeply into. people on booktok praise yellowface way too highly that's 10000% for sure

happy birthday ang! i always see a lot of stuff about lin and the airkids, but i don’t see much about kya with su’s kids. could you maybe write something about them interacting?
!!!!! GOOOD POINT
I never thoughtttt so these may be basicccc I'm sorry!
God she and Huan would get along so much because she breezes in next to the stony Lin and is like picking up on their art and everything and they just instantly feel so comfortable around Kya and they go to her for everything and when huan starts dating they go to Kya with questions and for support!!!
Kya and opal can get along well Opal reminds her a lot of Jinora but then blindsides her with that Beifong dry humor and attitude and Kya is thrown but loves it and When opal has her first kid she insists Kya be there because she trusts her
Wei and Wing don't really think they'll like her at first but Kya grew up with Bumi Suyin and Lin and she kicks ass at sports so they're like "Alright cool old lady!!" And they bond that way.
Kya is practically a Beifong whisperer and is the only one who can cut through their bullshit in zero seconds flat so even if the kids try to throw up emotional walls she gently nudges them toward healthy thinking and coping skills.
Suyin is happy to have Kya back in her life too! Kya is what ~10 years older than her?? So she remembers the fun they used to have.
One time Kya was held up in the south so Lin showed up to Zaofu first for their holiday and the kids were all like "Where's Aunt KYA?! Also hello aunt Lin."
Baatar Jr who??

YuuMika Week Day 06: ‘’’’Smut’’’’
(This blog is run by two people, and this is Samantha!)
LOL YOU THOUGHTTTT. I’m not about to write smut because that makes me very uncomfortable still even though I’m technically of age now. But nOW you can have your smut in vAMPIRE form as bLOOD DRINKING!!!!! (Ya’ll know that drinking blood is a euphemism for doing the do anyway?? Like that’s basically confirmed canon lol byeeee)
Brief Summary: Drinking blood brings intense pleasure, but along with that is the fear of what that pleasure means.
[This is a divergence from canon set like after season 2 ends lol. Use your imagination~~~ :3]
Word Count: 1113 (HOW????)
Rating: T for Teen?? (Idk, Yuu curses like once and drinking blood is described as being pleasurable?? Use your own discretion, but it’s very clean!)
Yū paced around the tiny room, feeling the cabin fever beginning to set in. He and Mika had gotten trapped behind the rest of the squad right as the vampire army was passing, and Mika had thrown him into a hut to keep him safe. Not like Yū couldn’t take down all of those vampire bastards on his own, but since hiding out was what Mika wanted, he’d been willing to oblige. But the little shack was so small that it was beginning to nauseate him. The only light that came in was from the cracks in the wooden boards that made up the walls, and even that was dimming as the sun began to set.
“Do you think they’re gone yet?” he asked, pressing himself up against one of the walls. Mika, who was sitting down, listened for a moment, then shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Yū uttered a painful groan. He slid down the wall so that he was back to being on eye level with Mika, whose red orbs were all too visible in the near-dark.
For a second there, he’d almost forgotten that Mika was a vampire. It was past time for dinner, and Yū could feel his own stomach rumbling. If he was hungry, Mika was too. “Here,” Yū muttered, yanking at his collar. “I know you must be hungry.”
Mika recoiled, as he always did. He was being so stubborn lately. This morning, he had refused to drink any blood at all. “No. I’m fine.”
“I know you’re not. Just take some.” Yū exposed his neck even further, dragging his shirt down. “It’ll give me something to do.” If he had to sit around and stare at the walls any longer, he was worried that he might lose it. He could see that he was starting to make Mika sweat now. The boy was licking his lips uneasily and staring at him in that hungry way, face beginning to flush. It was sort of endearing when he stared at Yū like that, even though Yū knew he was valuing him more as a meal than anything else.
“You’ll tell me if it hurts?” Mika asked, still not yet willing to approach. Yū decided to do the hard part for him, shuffling forwards and presenting his neck in front of Mika’s fangs.
“Of course I will. I always do-” Yū cut off, as Mika suddenly struck into him, obviously unable to hold back the bloodlust with a fresh meal right front of him. Yū felt the familiar rush of pain from the bite, always so unbearable that he wanted to tear Mika away in order to make it stop. But then, as always happened, the pain melded away into something more. An intoxicating pleasure rippled through Yū’s body, enough to almost make him cry out again. It was like an explosion radiating out from his neck, bursting inside of him and making his heart melt. It took all that he had to keep it in, because he didn’t know if the sensation was just on his side. Mika probably didn’t feel anything at all. Yū was nothing but livestock to him in these moments, but god did it feel good to have Mika drink from him. Every time it happened, Yū always wanted Mika to keep going and never stop, but he knew that the pleasure was wrong. Yū would smile until he was drunk dry, and that was how vampires were able to make the entire human race submissive to their whims.
A few moments later, Mika pulled away again, the feeling of his fangs scraping against skin throwing Yū back into the state of pain. This time, he couldn’t help but gasp from how terrible the contrast was, and Mika hurriedly wiped at his neck with his sleeve, trying to clean him up.
“You’re hurting, Yū-chan,” he mumbled. “I won’t do it again, I promise.”
“No, Mika.” Yū slumped into the vampires strong arms as he came back down from his high. “I want you to. I don’t mind.”
Mika continued drying the blood for a few moments more, before pulling Yū onto his chest and letting the boy rest there. Both boys were still heaving from the excursion of the blood drinking. Finally, when his breath had slowed, Mika spoke up again. “Hey, Yū… what does it feel like when I drink your blood?”
“It’s…” Yū didn’t even know how to describe it. “You go first.”
Mika’s hand had risen up to tangle in Yū’s hair, slowly brushing through the waves with his gentle fingertips. “I don’t know if this will make sense to you, but it feels... nice. Almost too nice. It’s more than just the blood, it’s...”
“Like your body is tingling all over and your heart might explode?”
Mika stiffened. “Yeah. It’s exactly like that. I’ve been worried that… I think I enjoy it too much. It’s so much better than drinking Krul’s blood, and that sickens me because I don’t want to hurt you, Yū-chan. I’m just worried that… one day I’ll lose control.” He sighed deeply, laying his head upon the other boy’s. A few more moments passed before he spoke again. “How did you know what it feels like?”
“Because it feels the same to me.” Yū had to admit that he’d felt a great rush of relief upon hearing Mika say those words. It was good to know that he wasn’t alone in enjoying the sensation while also being terrified of it. “If it’s so pleasurable for you to drink my blood though, why do you refuse it so often?”
“The less I do it, the better,” Mika muttered, nestling into Yū’s hair. Yū could feel the boy’s cheeks tightening, and he knew he had to be smiling, at least a little bit. “I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling it, Yū-chan,” Mika whispered just loud enough to hear. “You know I would never hurt you, right? No matter how good it feels, I could never hurt you.”
“Yes.” Yū tilted his face up so that he could meet the other boy’s vampiric eyes. It was strange how he could look at once so strange yet so familiar, red eyes contrasting with the pale face than Yū had known for years. “I might not know much, Mika. But I do know that.” With a smile of his own, Yū laid back down in Mika’s arms, staying there until the vampire army was long gone. And while having Mika’s arms around him wasn’t the same as the pleasure from having Mika’s fangs in his neck, Yū did have to admit that it felt pleasing in its own, gentler way.
