List of inspirations that I noticed in ✨️The Amazing Digital Circus✨️

an almost-essay (PART 1)

When I watched the first episode for the first time I started to notice several similarities to other subjects that I also like and know, other fandoms and popular things on the internet, and I soon thought about sharing them on Tumblr (which I'm doing now).

I know there will be things that other people have noticed that will be missing from the blog, but I will try to include all the things that I remember recognizing at that moment. Feel free to share them, though!

I don't know the formal names of some things I'm gonna mention, and also my english It's not the best, I'm trying to practice my writing <3

I'll have to divide this blog into two parts because Tumblr doesn't support more than 10 images per blog. grrgrrgr I really wanted to put everything together but I can't. At the end of the blog I will put a link to part 2 and you can continue reading [when i finish the part 2 of course]

1 - Popee the Perfomer

Popee the Performer is a low-budget animation made in 2000, at the time when 3d animation was still a new technology. It's a collection of shorts and they talk about three circus performers' interactions. People found this on the internet in 2021 and they started a new fandom on top of it. What makes this show talked about it's the disturbing situations the characters put themselves through. There are a lot of violent scenes and sometimes the characters die by the end of the episode, but when we go to the next one they're just alive again, and that makes us question if they are living stuck in an eternal loop with no way of getting out of that small circus setting.

The 3d is pretty simple, mostly because it's old, but that makes me think about the connections between PTP and TADG are the aesthetics, the whole "disturbing adult cartoon about serious topics with a children's colorful aesthetic" thing, and also those connections with the Nintendo 64 graphics. I'M GONNA MENTION IT TOO!!

And a part of this fandom also it's part of Raggedy Ann and Andy's fandom. They were pretty close in 2021.

2 - Raggedy Ann And Andy

Their fandom started around 2021 because the YouTube algorythm just decided that it was time to recommend a video about Raggedy Andy to EVERYONE! And that's how I discovered them too <3 (I WAS THEREEE I WAS THERE). Andy got the main focus and he was everyone's dream boyfriend lol

Also that's completely unrelated but I wanted to say that I'm one of the people whose video was recommended to everyone through YouTube algorythm and helped the fandom to grow even more (I'm so proud of myself guys I'm sorry awnqbehdjwndbwjdnh)

I believe that if that first video that helped me (and more people) to discover them were never recommended to us, maybe Ragatha wouldn't even have that design!! It's alright that Ann is a doll from the 1900s, but the whole "Raggedy Ann And Andy" thing wasn't a fandom topic, they were just normal ragdolls and they were recognized only by grannies and "the anabelle doll" (this one makes me pissed)

3 - Nintendo 64 (and old 3d art)

And this recognition that it is a fandom united this subject to other famous fandoms, leading to the same audience, and this audience is also TADG's audience. I'll talk more about this at the end of the blog! (Edit: Part 2 of the blog. *silently cries*)

That low budget 3d aesthetic it's turning really popular recently. I'm not much of an expert on the subject since I don't know much about games, but I recognize it from the old graphics and my biggest reference is Mario 64. There's a good explanation for it being so popular, I have a theory that it's related to liminal spaces, but I'm not sure. Still, it's worth mentioning.... and also that bubble character really looks like chain chomp!!

4 - liminal spaces (backrooms and the "dreamcore" aesthetic)

I think if you're on Tumblr it's very likely that you already know what the backrooms are. A part of our reality, but outside of it. There are floors and floors of eternal levels, where you wander in the same place and don't go anywhere. As if you had broken the matrix and were trapped outside, in a bug. This has become very popular on the internet and it's interesting that it is being used as inspiration for creating a show.

Furthermore, there was also the popularization of aesthetics such as dreamcore, traumacore and weirdcore, which consist of images that look like they came out of a dream. Things that you recognize, but don't know where they came from, like a deja vu, which makes you uncomfortable. It's extremely linked to the backrooms, since it's the same feeling. Many of the images are things that take us back to childhood, to the past, but they are not right, as if they were corrupted. Old 3D is also used a lot to make some of these images, like the example I gave of the Nintendo 64. The fandoms are all interconnected!

In this whole concept they also like to be inspired by childhood characteristics, such as old images of toys, empty birthday parties, playgrounds, and it also takes us to that famous sensation on the internet that I don't remember the name of, but it is basically feeling afraid of a place where people should be going, but they aren't. Abandoned places. The fear of being alone. All those topics revolve around each other. They makes us question abour reality, "do I even exist?" (I know I do, but writing characters that way and exploring the possibilities is kinda nice)

I know a brazillian youtuber that made a good video about it, her name is Replai and in the video she talks about how Poppy Playtime's art was made, but I know that most of the people reading this don't know how to speak in portuguese so... yeah. It's a good video.

5 - Children's aesthetics (but something's off)

This gif speaks for itself. It's that traumacore/dreamcore/weirdcore thing that I was talking about.

Still talking about that empty feeling of knowing that something it's familiar but don't knowing where it came from, childhood memories can be related to this, as they are vague, distant and sometimes carry a feeling of sadness. I'm not a great expert on the subject, but somehow the way that's explored scares us, I know there's a good explanation on the internet. This reminds me of the reason why people are afraid of clowns: they wear this fixed smile on their face and try to appear friendly, but it's this frozen, empty expression that leaves us afraid that there are other intentions underneath. And the fact that they are so related to childhood and children's innocence makes us fearful, because we don't know if they can do any harm to them. (of course, this all happens subconsciously, you don't think about it that way but your brain activates this instinct of fear) (not you YOU, people with that phobia)

I refuse to believe that these things are not interconnected. There is a strange feeling that can be explored from this childish aesthetic and connection to childhood.

Many media are using this aesthetic as part of their stories, especially horror ones. Five Nights At Freddy's was a pioneer, exploring this in the early 2010s, and then there were other franchises like Poppy Playtime, Bendy And The Ink Machine, other FNAF games (and there are also discoveries of things that do this unintentionally and that were created before this popularization, like Popee the Performer. In music we also have great examples like Melanie Martinez's old albums, during the Cry Baby era. There are also other aesthetics who like to explore this childlike-creepy vibe, and they're a little unrelated to all this stuff, like Morute/Dollcore). Whenever I talk about this I remember FNAF SB Daycare, as it is the result of all these topics we have talked about so far. The Security Breach DLC "Ruin" decided to explore this fear of empty, abandoned places, but which once had happy children walking through the corridors. This feeling is very scary.

Do you remember when I gave clowns as an example? The circus is also a way to explore this scary+childhood feeling. A place where there should be lots of games, but which only causes fear, as in the case of those scary clowns. It's quite common in the media for the circus to be used as a focus of terror, however in the internet version we were talking about just now, it doesn't have to be directly a horror circus, just feeling that childish sensation and feeling that something is wrong is enough. Enough to make us feel uncomfortable. It's like the characters were suffering, but they can't scream for help, and it's a disorted vision of how a circus should look like. Hi Pomni!!

The Daycare Attendant also explores that.

6 - Bendy and Fnaf (for the same reasons I already told you all, but one more)

Jax it's Bendy's and William Afton's lost son. We don't need no DNA test.

(I'm obviously just kidding btw, his design was probably inspired by them, MOST ESPECIALLY BENDY and maybe the Cheshire Cat from Alice because of his smile??? Idk)

7. as far as live action, i really like indie movies or films that generally focus on the slice of life genre. also films exploring a character navigating growth or love. i’m open to a lot of animation too but i adore surrealism and similar genres as my live action preferences for that too.

8. i really do wish i read more. its pretty difficult with adhd/autism but i do find myself fascinated with early 1900s children’s book illustrations.

HEY YOU!

Do you like Void?

Are you a Void simp?

If the answer is yes to either of those questions then stick around bc I need help-

I have been racking my brain for over 3 whole days trying to figure out what this creature’s voice sounds like but I have no idea what to do for it and I have yet to make a decision.

If any of you have ideas please please share your thoughts I’d love to hear ‘em! I’m also planning on making an animation for his voice once I’ve decided what it’ll be. (Similar to Dark’s animation) Depending on how long it takes me to decide will most likely determine how fast the animation will be done.

Before this I’d played around with a couple of Voices that I thought fit him, so you kinda have an idea for the vibe of his voice. (What even is that-)

At first I wanted it to be Andy from Raggedy Ann and Andy: A musical adventure. But then I realized it was too similar to Jax, so then I tried Angel Dust from Hazbin Hotel and I didn’t really like the accent. Then I tried Lucifer bc Void matches his ‘I’m ✨Depressed✨’ aesthetic but eh I still didn’t like it- (Might keep that for his singing Voice claim separately though bc my LANDS can Lucifer’s VA sing-)

Aaaanywizzle this has been very long, to me at least- If you have any ideas just tell me the character and the franchise they’re from so I can look at the voice just in case I haven’t heard of it before.

A/N: HI lovelies! Happy weekend! So I’m not really sure what project I’m going to focus on next, but so far this is the one whose muse is strongest so here we are. I hope you enjoy. 

Summary: Halloween shenanigans begin

“So am I really the only one who figured it out so far?” Bucky asked as you played Mario Kart on Friday afternoon.

“Yep,” you mumbled as you blue shelled him and flew past him to win.

“You suck.”

“Don’t be a sore loser.”

He blew a raspberry at you in response.

“So what are you and Steve dressing up as for the party tonight?” he asked as you started another game.

“Wonder Woman and Superman. What are you going as?”

“I’m not going.” He tried to sound nonchalant but didn’t succeed.  

“What? Why not?” you asked, pausing the game.

“Well, Dot’s probably going to be there.”

“You could still come hang out with us. I mean Thor’s your friend, not hers so she may not go.”

“When have you ever known Dot to pass up free alcohol?”

Frowning you were forced to concede the point.

“Besides, I don’t even have a costume. I was supposed to do a couple’s thing with her.”  

“Well, if that’s the only thing keeping you from going tonight. Then I’ve got just the thing. Wait here.”

You were immediately up on your feet.

“Where are you going, doll?”

“I’ll be right back.”

When you returned Steve had gotten back from lab. You grinned and handed the box to Bucky and greeted Steve with a kiss.

“Hi, handsome.”

“Hey, sweetness,” he grinned down at you as you settled your arms around his waist.

“When did you get this, doll?” Bucky asked as he looked at the Batman costume.

“Steve wasn’t sure if he wanted to be Batman or Superman so I bought both a few weeks ago. Never got around to returning it,” you shrugged. “You don’t have to come with us, but if your only reason not to was that you didn’t have a costume. Problem solved.”

“Thank you, doll. I’ll think about it.”

“That’s all I ask.”

You squeezed his shoulder and glanced at the time.

“I��m going to grab a shower before the bathroom gets overrun. I’ll see you later.”

“See you later, sweetness,” Steve gave you lingering kiss which had Bucky fake gagging.

“Shush.”

“Quiet’s not my style, doll.” He winked at you.  “I’ll see you tonight.”

You rolled your eyes but grinned at the positive response.

“Good.”

 You were pleasantly surprised by how well the costume fit, considering it only cost thirty bucks. You were just fixing the tiara when there was a knock on the door.

“One second,” you mumbled through a mouthful of bobby pins.

When the head piece was secure, you fastened on the bracers and smiled at your reflection before pulling open the door.

“Wow,” Steve stared at you slack-jawed for a moment.

“Hey, Superman,” you flirted.  

“Hey yourself. You look great, sweetness.”

He glanced at the other side of your room and you smirked, grabbing at the S on his chest and tugging him into the room.

“Nat’s already downstairs with Clint,” you explained kissing him firmly as the door swung shut behind him.

“Do we have to go?” Steve whined when you finally broke apart after your make out session. You’d somehow ended up on the bed in his lap. “I’d much rather stay here and keep doing that.”  

“Yes, we have to go. We promised since we skipped last week,” you reminded him as you climbed out of his lap and started fixing your hair. “Sam will say I stole you again if we don’t go.”

“Well, he’s. Never mind,” Steve trailed off, ears turning pink.

“What?”

“No. It’s nothing. I was going to make a dumb joke.”

He seemed to be getting redder by the second and now you had to know what he was thinking.

“Please, tell me,” you pleaded, pouting at him. You reached for his hand as you sat next to him.  

He only lasted two seconds before growling under his breath.

“You’re dangerous. You know that right?”

“I’m aware. But I also just want to know what you were gonna say.”

Sighing, he leaned back staring at the ceiling.

“I was going to say Sam was half right, because you had stolen my heart.” You were about to call him on his corny joke when his eyes snapped to yours and he continued speaking. “But you didn’t, because I gave it to you. Without hesitation.”

You gnawed on your bottom lip in an attempt not to cry, but it didn’t work and a few tears slipped out.

“I didn’t mean to upset you, sweetness.”

“You didn’t. That was adorable and sweet and everything a girl wants to hear. Jerk,” you grumbled.

He chuckled and reached out to wipe the tears away.

“You have my heart too, you know. Free and clear.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too. Now stop making me cry, so I can redo my make up.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He snapped a salute. “But if you’re going to redo your make up anyways…”

He pulled you in for a searing kiss that took nearly all your lipstick off.

 Fifteen minutes later you were finally ready to go. You knew your friends would be fuming, but you couldn’t wipe the stupid grin off your face. You grabbed your phone and purse, checking for your ID. You debated wearing a jacket but decided that for one night you’d let aesthetics win out, so you grabbed Steve’s hand and pulled him from the room.

“Good timing. Buck says he’s about to come up here and drag us out.”

“Did Bucky decide to go after all?” you asked as you locked your door.

“Yep, he’s downstairs with the others. And he loves the costume. But you know funny thing I don’t remember considering being Batman,” Steve commented once you were down the hall.

“Because you didn’t.”

“You ordered that after they broke up last week, didn’t you?”

“Yup. Gotta love free two day shipping,” you smirked. “You didn’t tell Bucky, did you?”

“Of course not.”

“I know we’re all going as a group. But I thought he might be more comfortable going with us as a trio.”

“It was a great idea, sweetness. And my lips are sealed.” He wrapped his arm around your shoulders and kissed the top of your head. “You’re the best.”

 The group was chattering excitedly when you reached the lounge. There was a flurry of greetings and compliments when you and Steve entered.

“Superhero suits you, doll,” Bucky whispered as he sidled up beside you.  

“Thanks, Bucks-a-billion. It suits you too,” you grinned up at him.  “Come here.” You pulled up the camera on your phone and took a quick selfie both of you beaming.

“Good idea, y/n. We need a couple of pictures!” Wanda insisted when she saw you and Bucky.

A couple pictures somehow turned into a full blown photo shoot, and you finally got out of the dorm thirty minutes later. How could you resist when you’d all picked staples from your childhood?

Nat and Clint were a spot on Kim and Ron. Sam and Riley were Buzz and Woody. Wanda and Pietro had decided to go as Raggedy Ann and Andy. And Tony, Rhodey, and Bruce were dressed as the red, blue, and green power rangers.

  “HEY!” Thor boomed when he opened the door. “Come on in!”

You all piled into the house.

“Drinks are in the kitchen. Dance floor is through there.”

The group split up, Thor lingering by you, Steve, and Bucky.

“You look amazing as always, y/n.”

“Thank you,” you giggled.

“Let’s get you all drinks and get this party started. Right this way.”

Steve held your hand as you followed Thor towards the kitchen, and you in turn tugged Bucky with you by the elbow. He offered you a wry smile when he figured out you weren’t going to let him sulk for the entire night.

Thor handed you each a beer and chatted for a few minutes he was pulled away, but not before making all of you promise to play flip cup later on.

You were the first of the three to spot Dot sauntering around the party with Brock on her arm. You almost gagged at the sight of the both of them. Bucky was momentarily distracted, talking to Sam and Riley so you pulled Steve away to point her out.

“Damn it. I was really hoping that she wouldn’t show.”

“Me too. But also ew. Please tell me Bucky would not have worn that costume.”

“I can’t but mainly because I am not thinking about my best friend in an outfit like that.”

Steve visibly shuddered at the thought. Brock was parading around in what could only be described as spandex booty short orange overalls that were supposed to resemble a prison uniform and she was wearing a slutty cop costume.

“They deserve each other.”

“Definitely.”

“At least it doesn’t seem like she’s looking for him,” you noted.

“And the cowl covers his face. Maybe she won’t recognize him.”

“With that jawline?” you snarked.

Steve arched an eyebrow at you before chuckling and shaking his head when you shrugged, refusing to take back the comment.

“Well let’s hope she’s not in the mood to start shit then.”

“That we can do.”

You both sighed for a moment before Steve shook his head in a mental reset motion.

“Come on. We’re here to have fun. Buck will leave if he thinks we’re worried about him.”

“You’re right. Dance with me?” you grinned up at him.

“Happy to, sweetness.”  

He led you into the next room where people were dancing, happy for the opportunity to hold you close. You loved the way his hands felt on your hips as the two of you grinded to the music.

It didn’t take long for your friends to find you and start shooting the both of you meaningful looks. You ignored them and focused on the happiness coursing through you. Tonight was going to be a good night.
