Ch 3 (of 4): Wherein the time becomes a teensy bit trying, actually —!

Fic Summary: If Luigi had known babysitting this Yoshi egg would bring him this much trouble, he would have thought twice about volunteering to watch it. Especially since said trouble had Bowser’s name written all over it. Multiple games of tag later, Luigi stumbled back to the outdoor nest, collapsing onto the main blanket next to Bowser. Bowser looked down at him, crinkled amusement at the corners of an understanding gaze. Luigi couldn't help but smile tiredly back, in between gasps of air. Really, though. Fighting against that kid didn't tell the whole story about how hyperactive he was. He was still running across the courtyard at full tilt, something sparkling clutched in his claws. Kammy was running after him, shouting for him to give it back to her. She stopped in front of the nest, hunched over and panting.

“Are you idiots just going to sit there?!” Kammy shrieked at them.

Luigi would've helped her out, but he was currently too tired to even stand. Bowser very unconvincingly pretended he didn't hear her. Kamek grinned wide, but didn't move an inch.

Kammy cursed. “Useless, the lot of you!” she spat, hitching her robes and resuming her chase.

Luigi wondered why Kammy didn't use her broom to go after Junior. But that was the sort of thing that made this place so lively, Luigi supposed. He curled up right where he was against Bowser’s knee, too exhausted to notice Bowser stiffen at the contact. Memories floated through Luigi’s brain about some of the adventures he and Mario and Peach had gone on together. It’d been a while since he’d seen them, hadn't it? He hoped they weren't too worried about him, but they were probably worried sick. The last time Luigi had gotten himself into trouble like this, Peach had been beside herself; her shout of “Luigi!” had echoed ad infinitum down the cavern he’d fallen into. He could practically hear it now, repeating on itself amidst the rumbling of stone. Mario hadn't said anything back then, though he seldom did; he’d just jumped in after him before Peach could stop him, Luigi recalled. He was always more of an action person, in that regard, and he always stayed cool and collected about it all. It was pretty rare that Mario would do something like shout for his name in the cadence Luigi would shout for his when he was worried for —

"Luigi!"

…wait hold on was that Mario’s voice —?

Luigi scrambled to his feet, scooping the egg up as he rose and turning his head every which way to find the source of the shout. It had come from across the courtyard, where Mario and Peach were standing on the other side of the fence. Peach had one hand cupped to her mouth to yell, the other waving in the air in a manner that threatened to knock Luigi’s hat off from where it rested on her head. Mario was staring at a point past Luigi’s shoulder with a hard frown.

Luigi turned around. Evidently, he was the last person to notice Mario and Peach; Kamek had his book snapped closed in vexation, and Bowser was crouched defensively, teeth bared at Mario. Oh no. This probably looked really bad. Maybe he could just…go talk to Mario and Peach? Tell them that everything was fine?

Luigi stepped one foot out of the nest to go to them. Bowser snapped his attention to him. Raising the other foot off the blanket earned him a growl, and as Bowser stepped towards him Luigi remembered he was technically being held here against his will.
