"He didn't think to check" Regulus Black Oneshot

All he had thought about was practicing for the competition. He had all but assumed that the ice was still frozen solid. He didn't even think to check, for he had been on this ice merely hours before - how could it possibly become thin after only a few hours?

Regulus didn't have a prayer of getting to the edge, to get off the ice when he heard the first crack. He barely registered that the ice he was standing on had cracked at all when it started to crush under his feet.

If he wasn't already terrified of water - which he most definitely was after an incident at the ocean where he nearly drowned because of his own stubbornness and his parents getting a little too caught up in their booze - he was most certainly now as the ice gave out completely underneath him before he had even managed to take a step.

He was completely submerged in mere seconds. Gasping for air when there was no air to gain, limbs trying to make him swim to the hole in the ice when they barely knew how, ice shards scrape his numbing skin, unable to see underwater.

His brain to panicked to think about this most certainly meaning death - to think about how he didn't get to say bye to Sirius or James, to tell either of them how special they were to him, how much he loved them both - all he could think about was trying to get out and get air.

It was only a couple minutes before Regulus's lungs had filled with the icy water. It was hours before someone came to the rink, only to find Regulus barely visible under the ice. Poor kid.
