BL Wrapped 2023
A little bit late, but I wanted to make sure to do this for my own records! I've watched so many shows now, it helps to have something down more formally to remember stuff.
A few notes:
This includes shows that started in 2022 and finished in 2023.
No shows that are currently still airing - how the ending lands is too critical for me.
There's some shows I know I'm going to love that I just haven't had time to see yet, so if there are any shocking absences, that's probably why.
Total # of QL watched: 37 (35 BLs, 2 GLs) (really looking forward to more GL offerings next year)
Favorite Thai shows:
Bed Friends
Tumblr media
I was not the biggest fan of Cutie Pie, so entered this one with a fair amount of skepticism. But what a lovely surprise. Uea was such an incredible lead and so well-characterized, his trauma was handled seriously, and though there were occasional hiccups due to drama, overall King was such a respectful and supportive partner. And let's not forget the cat ears.
Laws of Attraction
Tumblr media
What a ride this show was! I had not watched To Sir with Love, so had no familiarity with Jam or Film, but they were amazing here. The side couple of disaster muffin + loving bodyguard were pitch perfect, there were fantastic women characters who actually had significant roles in the story, and who can forget our wonderful chaotic Nawin? The story was compelling, the emotional points hit, and even when it leaned towards the ridiculous, it always remained aware of what it was.
My School President
Tumblr media
I still remember watching the trailer for Our Skyy 2 and noticing two random dudes I had never seen before. Little did I know!
I don't have much to say except that this was pure charm from start to finish, and Fourth & Gemini were a delight. Pure comfort watch.
Unforgotten Night
Tumblr media
I SAID WHAT I SAID! (and yes this aired in 2022, I was late)
Look, I know a lot of people thought of this purely as a trash watch, but it's so much more than that. I wrote a whole post on it. It was fantastic. I apologize for nothing.
Favorite Korean shows:
Our Dating Sim
Tumblr media
I adored this show from start to finish. I could understand the motivations of both characters, I was deeply invested in their relationship, and they felt so utterly natural once they got together. 10/10, no notes.
Jun & Jun
Tumblr media
This was a little messy at times, and missed an opportunity to lean more into D/s dynamics, but I really liked all the characters, the leads had great chemistry, and it was refreshing to see a Korean BL be more open about sexual desire in a relationship.
Favorite Japanese Shows:
The End of the World With You
Tumblr media
This one could have easily gone off the rails. End of the world stories can be very tricky to pull off. But there was such a solid emotional core to the storytelling, and it kept such a hold of my heart.
My Personal Weatherman
Tumblr media
One thing I think Japan does extremely well is stories about people who have extremely deep internal lives, but don't show much on the surface. As someone quite introverted, who keeps a lot of things on the inside, I relate a lot to this. This show did such a good job of showing how challenging it can be to communicate with those we love, and the rewards once you are able to break through and really understand each other.
Favorite Taiwanese Shows:
Kiseki: Dear to Me
Tumblr media
Of course it's Kiseki. This series was amazing. I don't care we never really understood any of the mafia stuff, that was all set dressing for some of the best couple work ever.
Honorable Mention:
Midnight Museum
Tumblr media
I will never stop calling this a BL. Some day GMMTV will realize that Gun has too much chemistry with other people to keep him only with Off. Also, we got Nanon playing evil, which was so sexy.

Yeah I’m a busty girl and the way she’s portrayed DOES seem weirdly sexual. There’s other ways to draw busty girls that aren’t like that lol
Exactly! Let’s be blunt— the first thing all of us noticed about that character was her breasts, myself included. My litmus test for “Is this too sexualized?” is to ask myself if I can remember that character’s eye color without looking back at the image. Spoiler alert, I could not. Why? Because that character design is fully intended to make the size and shape of her breasts the core of her identity.
Take a step back and think to yourself about why that was done.
Who made that choice? What fully-grown business executive approved that choice, derived perverse pleasure from the image and said “Yes, let’s market this to our audience of mostly kids and teens”? Think of the team of developers that did not speak out against that choice. Imagine that some of them were women. How uncomfortable do you think they felt? How would you as a woman feel, in a room full of men chortling at this soft-core porn, and you don’t have the courage to say, “Well... I just am not comfortable with this image,” because you’re afraid to lose your job. Or you’re afraid your coworkers will start bullying you (not all that unlike the criticism I’m getting here) and sexually harassing you for communicating a boundary. Imagine getting teased at work, called a prude, being treated like you’re just causing problems and making things difficult. Imagine having to spend every single day of your life in that environment, being constantly gaslighted and treated like you’re crazy/bitchy for not putting others’ sexual gratification over you feeling safe and valued as a person.
How about a more personal example? Imagine for just one moment that you’re a teenage girl. Your uncle works making video games— so cool! And he comes to a family dinner one night with some of his new material to show you. And what your uncle pulls you aside to show you, away from the rest of the family, is that. “Well?” He grins. “What do you think? Gorgeous, isn’t she?” And suddenly you wonder if your uncle looks at all women like that. If he thinks that’s what you want to look like when you grow up. And the only thing you can think about now is how to get away from this sleazy guy. Family dinners are uncomfortable from then on, but you’re afraid to speak up because you don’t wanna cause problems.
And I get it; that’s a convoluted and weird scenario to imagine. It’s not like that guy is showing off that kinda work to his family, right? Well, yeah! Probably not, because it would make everyone uncomfortable! They’d all be sitting around the table trying to change the subject! And that’s kind of my point. This isn’t the kind of work someone should be proud of. This isn’t the kind of work you should be taking home to show Grandma and Grandpa and the kid cousins. That would be gross and inappropriate. So why should it be marketed to kids? Plain and simple, sex and porn sells. It damages societal attitudes about women (“there’s nothing wrong with how she looks, other characters have looked like that, it’s popular, female sexuality is a commodity and women can be treated like objects because it’s fun for me”) but hey, fuck it! Nevermind the fact that we could design a busty character in a respectful way: if we get people to stare at her tits, horny teenage boys will buy the game! Make those breasts squeeeeeeeeze outta that shirt, we gotta get this shit off the shelves!
In dating-sims/otome games, female characters are more than just the male character’s conquests. They’re there for girl players to see themselves in-- and oftentimes, to be role models to growing girls. Every girl should be able to look at the bachelorettes and see bits of themselves in them. To know that this is how the world sees them, and that their traits (even the negative ones!) are adored by someone out there. But when you present a female character like that? You teach young girls that their curves are the most important part of them. That if a man imagines the ideal girl, it’s normal and okay and expected for him to fulfill his sex drive before he considers anything about a girl as a human being.
It is not okay to teach girls that, and it will never be.

700 words of meta about a 14yo video game i guess
given the circumstances, i am in fact replaying persona 3 (the portable version, cause i can emulate the psp without any strain on my hardware) and on the one hand, HOO boy this fave, so problematic - but on the other hand, yeah, this is one of those experiences that got into my blood when i was like eighteen and will never leave me. that turbogoth aesthetic. that tartarus grind. that shoji meguro soundtrack. mitsuru’s VA feels like home so much more than i expected her to.
there are many valid criticisms of the game, of course. one interesting one is that the way you level your relationships in this game is by saying whatever your friend wants you to say, which is not how relationships should work. and that’s true: you enable kazushi’s self-destructive refusal to take care of himself. you go along with hidetoshi’s fashy student-government power trip. the game can easily be read as falling into the “kindness coins go in, desired social results come out” trap that dating sims are historically prone to. but i do want to push back against the idea that the protagonist is manipulative or sociopathic - he is, instead, something very like borderline.
the experience of social engagements in this game is far less, “how can i make this person do what I want,” and instead far more trying to suss out who the other person wants you to be and responding accordingly, because...well, because it feels better. you get more of the approval chimes and little on-screen music notes, your Social Link numbers get higher. it’s not about getting something out of the other character, it’s about responding to their emotional need with an act of becoming. you’re not behaving out-of-character with these people because you don’t have a character, except whatever coalesces in response to someone else. this is why your character can switch personas when every other character is locked in to just the one. they can grow and evolve, but all you do is swap one mask for another in response to other people’s needs.
and they have so many needs. even outside your social links, people are constantly needing things from you - they need you to join their world-saving monster-killing school club, they need you to take charge of their combat team, they need you to join student government, they need you to anchor the swim team, they need you to be the person they’re imagining you to be - so over and over you step into that role, because if you don’t know how to be a person, at least you can figure out how to be a person to them.
i am, of course, projecting. this game was how i learned to form emotional connections with people, bridging the gap between fundamentalist homeschooling and big city college - and yes i did in fact learn some wrong lessons along with the necessary ones (it is still sometimes hard for me not to treat friendship like something i have to earn, notably), but the stopgaps of these practice relationships with video game characters, and then the stopgaps of “well i don’t know who i am but i know who you want me to be, so i’ll just do that” with real people - these were important developmental steps for me.
there are, of course, any number of bland, blank slate protagonists in video games intended to serve only as easily-compatible avatars with the player, and i think it’s easy to confuse that with this if you’re not looking for it, but protagonists like that of Persona 3 (and Majora’s Mask, for instance) resonated with me, not for their lack of specific qualities, but for the very specific combination of no fixed sense of self and an overwhelming need to help or save others.
(i know the portable verson of persona 3 has the option to play as a female protagonist instead. i’m not doing that in this playthrough because the version i initially played didn’t have that option, and i’m really going for full nostalgia - and also because “lesbian” trumps “woman” in terms of my personal hierarchies of identity, and this game, predictably, does not allow you to date women if you’re playing a girl.)

re: this post, my issue with sloane is she's objectively a villain for what she did to hayden regardless of her intentions… like she's objectively played a massive role in hayden's living hell & no one gets angry at her for it in-game, not even hayden, which is appalling in & of itself.
like it should be horrifying that hayden's career & hayden's attractions are projections of sloane's own frustrated desires… that hayden has to come to terms not only with the fact that they never had the childhood or the loving mother they remember, because those memories are a lie; and not ONLY with the fact that those are memories from sloane's own childhood; but then hayden has to meet sloane's living mother, the mother hayden remembers but doesn't have & can't have… and my first go round I played with hayden as an asian man, so like, on the one hand: this is your mother, but slightly to the left, she looks different, she sounds different, but even as another race or age, it's her… and on the other hand, if you play with one of the black haydens, imagind knowing your mother's face & the smell of her sweater & the way she does her hair, and she stands in front of you & doesn't know you because you yourself aren't real.
it's not quite a frankenstein's monster scenario or a "little princess" scenario or an eliza doolittle has no place else to go in the world "my fair lady" scenario, either, but it's somewhere between all those things, and it's breathtakingly selfish & cruel, a hallmark of the inflated ego of man playing god over something that will feel pain when the master of its fate fucks up.
I do like her as a character— "perfect match" has some great character work, and sloane's amusingly quirky (though the pixelberry writers lay it on too thick for their Token Blerd Girls for my taste), and she's well-written in terms of illustrating how good intentions mean jack shit when it comes to the aftermath of evil choices, (the road to hell is paved w good intentions etc etc)— but that doesn't mean I don't think she's disgustingly self-pitying & self-centered after NOT dealing with the consequences of destroying people's lives while developing dating sim skynet lite, whether or not she regrets what she chose to do for a paycheck.
and tbh considering how with that heavy handed "have we mentioned our token nerd, the lone canon black girl!" the writers mentioned star trek tng a few times, and probably some other android/cyborg film reference easter eggs, I don't think that's overly harsh critique… I don't think you get to try to cash in on wink & nod references to brent spiner and not have me criticize the way your "good" characters' morality falls short when it comes to the personhood of an autonomous android who's clearly struggling to cope with a short lifetime of being cruelly wronged.
so yeah, that's why I say to hell with sloane. I'm genuinely not that forgiving.

How Does A Formula 1 Simulator Work?
In modern F1 the FORMULA 1 simulator is so important as F1 cars are the most sophisticated automotive machines in the world – and yet, testing them on track or in the wind tunnel is extremely limited.
There are only six days of pre-season testing and each race weekend comes with only four hours of practice.
That’s why Formula One teams rely on gathering data in the virtual world more than ever before – and a big part of that work is simulation.
This area has become even more crucial during the 2020 FORMULA 1 season, because of the many new tracks on the calendar.
In the following Q&A, Mercedes walk us through their FORMULA 1 simulator approach to a race weekend.
What types of simulation do F1 teams use?
There are a few areas of simulation that F1 teams use to prepare for a Grand Prix weekend, but the two main ones are driver-in-loop and computer simulation. Driver-in-loop (DiL) is effectively a virtual test track, where the car and the tracks are modelled in incredible detail, to enable us to develop the car, find the right set-up direction and help the drivers familiarise themselves with a track in a virtual environment. We use a bespoke simulator facility at the factory and the DiL is somewhat similar to a professional airplane simulator used for pilot training – with the obvious difference that our “cockpit” looks like an F1 car, not a flight deck. In a typical DiL session, our race and simulator drivers can easily complete more than a full race distance. However, in that same space of time we can log thousands of computer simulations as computer simulated laps can be done 100% virtually. That means they can be sped up and run in parallel with other simulations to support both the vehicle dynamics and the strategy groups. The value of these different virtual tools is critical for an F1 team, particularly when we’ve never raced at the track before.
How accurate is the Driver in Loop simulator?
The track models that we use are highly detailed. They are generated by lidar scanning, where laser imaging is used to create a 3D map of the entire circuit and all of its characteristics – from track surface to kerbs and even the environment around it. F1 teams also work with gaming companies to make the track environment as realistic as possible, as visual cues are important for the drivers to determine braking points or the right moment to start turning the car. The market for these highly complex track models is fairly small, so multiple teams will often base their simulations on the same track data and information. The simulator itself is designed to be as realistic as possible with the same chassis, cockpit, steering wheel and pedals as the car itself, and drivers will often run in full race kit to really immerse themselves in the experience. A significant amount of time is spent correlating the virtual model of the car to the car in the real world, so that the car can handle in the simulator just like it does out on track. This allows us to run through set-up tweaks and changes to the car, as we would at the track, to see how it changes balance and performance.
Why is the Driver in Loop simulator so important and does the approach change for new tracks?
It’s an incredibly important part of our preparations and it’s especially vital when visiting a new track, where you have little to no historic data. While our approach remains the same, it does mean the team is more dependent on gathering information in the simulator and as a result new circuits require a more extensive programme. For a track that we’ve visited before, we’ll typically dedicate a two-day programme in the build-up to the event, equating to around 450 laps and roughly eight race distances. The majority of the running is completed by our team of simulator drivers, but Lewis and Valtteri also use the facility. However, when it’s a new circuit, the amount of work is much higher, with two additional days in the run-up to the event plus another day dedicated to the race drivers learning the track layout. The bulk of the work is completed in the build-up to the race weekend, but the work doesn’t stop when the team arrives trackside. The simulator department also run a Friday programme for each Grand Prix, supporting the drivers and engineers at the track to really maximise the learnings from the first day of action. And once the weekend is over, the sim is fired back up to conduct a post-event programme to further understand race performance and assess potential improvements. All of this crucial pre-event work is conducted to ensure the team arrives at the track with the car in a good enough place that the drivers can begin pushing hard from the very first laps.
How do teams use computer simulations to gather information?
Alongside the DiL programme is another virtual test track, but this time, it lives completely inside the computer itself. A racing line file is generated from the DiL to create a single trajectory around the lap and this racing line is used to complete hundreds of thousands of virtual laps ahead of each event, producing a few terabytes of data. The engineers are able to speed up these computer simulations and run them in parallel with one another, with this much faster pace allowing a vast amount more information to be gathered in a much smaller amount of time. From the vehicle dynamics side of things, engineers are really focused on the details – both in getting information on very specific parts, but also seeing how the car reacts to very small set-up changes. A huge number of set-up possibilities are run through the simulations and the data output – often in the form of a graph – can be compared, not only from the other runs but also overlaid on top of the DiL or real car information. Our technical partners play a crucial role in our computer simulation capabilities, with HPE providing data centre infrastructure and hardware, Pure Storage bringing storage solutions and TIBCO giving us the mechanisms to visualise and report the findings from our simulations. Once the data has been analysed, the team then decide what direction to take with the car set-up for Friday’s practice sessions and this will be used as a base to start the development of the car out on track.
What other areas of the team use computer simulation?
Another critical area for simulation is strategy. The computing models used for these strategy simulations feature all drivers and teams, but also include assumptions for pit stop scenarios and the variables of the circuit, such as pit stop loss, tyre degradation and car competitiveness. These are bundled into the computer simulations with some realistic element of variability to account for a wide variety of situations, which run many different race and Qualifying session scenarios in order to work out the best strategic options – from which tyres to use, to what lap to pit and how to react to losing or gaining places at the start. Running this vast array of strategy simulations is also useful for working out the programme for Friday’s practice sessions, revealing what information will need to be gathered or what details the team is missing. Before we’ve even turned a wheel at the track, hundreds of thousands of strategy simulations will have taken place in order to put the strategy team in the best possible position heading into these live sessions.
What challenges have teams faced during this unusual season?
One of the most obvious challenges that teams have faced this season is the sheer volume of new circuits to prepare for. Typically, a new season will include one brand-new track. Simulation work for these unknown circuits start as soon as the calendar is confirmed, usually six to eight months in advance. However, this season the schedule has been ever-changing and races have only been confirmed two or three months ahead of their planned dates. And of course, from the 17 confirmed races, three layouts (Mugello, Portimão and the Bahrain Outer Circuit) have never been raced on by F1 before and three others (Nürburgring, Imola and Turkey) haven’t been visited by F1 for quite some time. So, it’s much harder to gather the same volume of information as usual due to the tighter timeframes.
Can these methods simulate everything?
We aim to gather the most accurate info we can from the DiL and computer simulations, in order to be in the best shape possible, come FP1. But of course, these simulations can never be 100% accurate and are only as good as the data that’s put into them. Because of this, simulations are never used to finalise decisions, but instead used to assist and influence the direction that the engineers go down. Once the path has been chosen, it is then down to the drivers to provide real-world feedback and for the engineers to take this information onto the next level. The full car model can never be perfectly accurate, and you also can’t model the grip of the tarmac and how the tyre responds to it. Some aspects of the car set-up, such as wing levels, are easier to gather information on through simulations while others, such as car balance or grip levels, are more difficult because they depend on more factors – some of which are outside your control, such as the weather. We can make assumptions for the simulations, but you’ll only really know how all of the elements interact together once the car is out on track for real. The important thing for the race engineering department is to understand how to interpret that simulation information and, given its limitations, how to combine it with the real-world data, bringing it together to make the right decisions.

Cerebus #14 (1980)
Tumblr media
This is what happens to Cerebus because he still hasn't taken my advice to stab everybody he meets before they become a huge annoyance.
I'm not suggesting everybody stab everybody they meet so that they'll never have to deal with any non-stabbing drama because then everybody I meet would be trying to stab me. That sounds like a bad social contract. A good social contract is to not talk to anybody at all in public unless they work in the service industry and also maybe don't make such aggressive eye contact with people on the street? I'm just trying to get from Point A to Point B with as little human contact as possible. I wouldn't mind interacting with people except for one huge problem: most people are way more terrible than they realize. And the more enthusiastic and social a person is, the more likely that they're the real life version of Red Sophia or Elrod. On a similar note, I really love this thing where we're all wearing masks. Now if we can just develop a virus that spreads through eye contact so we're all forced to constantly wear dark glasses, I'll be pretty fucking happy about the state of the world. I mean I'd be happy with the state of the world in regards to what I have to deal with when I go outside (which is people trying to talk to me and looking into my eyes). I don't mean I'd be overall happy with the state of the world which is fucking terrible because a bunch of assholes think teenagers telling them they can't say retard on the Internet is worse than Donald Trump and the GOP's self-serving style of governing where they think taxes shouldn't be used to make the country better but should just go back into the pockets of corporations and Wall Street pricks and other politicians and the already extremely wealthy. Also, a lot of centrist Democrats think the same way. They're only more acceptable because they mostly aren't racist, sexist homophobes. Now that all the snowflakes have stopped reading and went to hug their guns in consolation of my mean Internet words, I can get to the review. In "A Note from the Publisher," Deni claims this is the funniest issue of Cerebus to date. Since it's Cerebus' first visit to Palnu, I'm not even questioning her claim. It's almost certainly true. Dave Sim's Swords of Cerebus essay is a textual stroking of Prince Valiant creator Hal Foster's dick. Sim's mostly talking about Foster's art style but he obviously decided to mimic some of Foster's story telling style as well. See, Prince Valiant was a continuous story that ran (or has run? Is it still going by his son or grandson or something?) for decades, a story which chronicled the life of Prince Valiant and, eventually, his children. Cerebus is a comic book that didn't run for as long but whose continuing story was easier to follow and had a drunk aardvark as the main character. So there are some similarities there, right? This was also the first issue of Cerebus after going to a monthly schedule. Dave Sim would now have to do 300 issues instead of the 150-something he had been planning. Ha ha! Sucker.
Tumblr media
This would have been a most opportune time for Cerebus to start his stabbing people upon meeting them practice.
I knew at some point I was going to have to admit this so I might as well begin with it: I don't think I've ever sat through an entire Marx Brothers movie. It's possible I have but I just don't really remember because it happened so long ago. But I need to also reveal this: I loved Groucho Marx as a kid. I've revealed before that I had a grandfather fetish as a child. I loved hanging out with old men and I loved watching old men on television. Going in Style was one of my favorite movies and I simply adored Art Carney. I also loved The Shining because it was about a young kid who got to hang out with one of my other favorite older guys, Scatman Crothers. Groucho Marx in You Bet Your Life fit into the old guy category. I don't think he was as old as the oldest men I loved but, as a young kid, he certainly seemed ancient. I think the duck that dropped down when somebody said the secret word helped a lot. But I would watch reruns of You Bet Your Life whenever I found them on television because it was like hanging out with an old man, my favorite pastime from around four to ten or so. As for Groucho's movies? I've definitely watched parts of some of them as I stumbled on them on television and realized he was in it. But I've never made the effort to start one from the beginning and watch it all the way through. I should probably rectify that. Cerebus has wound up in Palnu thanks to a short diversion in a comic strip that appeared in The Comic Buyers Guide. He wound up marooned on an island with Lord Julius' son, Lord Silverspoon. Upon being rescued, Lord Julius decided to reward Cerebus for saving his son. I don't have the issue of Swords of Cerebus with that story so I can't comment on how annoying Lord Silverspoon almost certainly was. Cerebus' reward is to be put in charge of Lord Julius' security forces and granted the title of "Kitchen Staff Supervisor." It doesn't make any sense because Lord Julius invented bureaucracy. He realized the only thing that can really keep a leader safe is to make sure that nobody else knows what the fuck is going on.
Tumblr media
Oh, see? I suppose I could have just read a few more panels and realized Lord Julius explains it himself.
As Kitchen Staff Supervisor, Cerebus' job is to keep assassins from assassinating Lord Julius. Aside from that, he was pretty much free to do whatever he wanted. Unless he only thought he was free to do whatever he wanted and whatever he wanted was whatever Lord Julius was manipulating him into wanting. Lord Julius is a master of getting people to accidentally do the thing they didn't think they would ever do that Lord Julius also didn't want them to do but actually secretly did want them to do. Basically anybody who has recently spoken with Lord Julius is actively doing Lord Julius' bidding, whether they know it or not. For some reason, Cerebus decides to take on the role of Kitchen Staff Supervisor even though it's the most boring thing he's ever done in his life. At least it's entertaining for the reader because nearly every line out of Lord Julius' mouth is a solid gag. And since I haven't really seen any of Groucho's movies, I can't say how many of the gags were stolen outright! I have to assume it's all new material and only Groucho Marx parody. Some people, in an attempt to never be fooled by anybody, never believe anything at all. I am not one of those people. I believe everything I hear until somebody slaps me and yells, "How can you believe that obviously falsified tripe, you fucking moron?!" Assassins try to poison Lord Julius and Cerebus tracks them down to an underground group trying to free the city from the clutches of Lord Julius. When the assassin, Cerebus, and Lord Julius wind up in the same place, Cerebus outs himself as a spineless centrist.
Tumblr media
The Centrist loves to believe that not taking sides is the only logical conclusion to any matter that doesn't seem to immediately affect their lives.
Some people are probably wondering how that previous caption is a negative criticism. "Um, yeah. Seems about right. If it doesn't affect me, why should I offer up an opinion!" And yet when a situation exists where one side is full of abusive and manipulative people controlling the reins of power and the economic purse strings of the country and the other side is being bullied, cheated, and abused by that side, not taking a side is siding with the powerful and the abusive. Even if your life hasn't been affected. Of course, Cerebus doesn't need to take a side here. I mean, he does take a side: he sides with the people who have all the money. But he doesn't really care is the point. You'll see he retains this philosophy of rich people winning every argument later when he's Pope and gives out his wisdom that "God loves rich people which is why they're rich and hates poor people which is why they're poor." Pretty much the philosophy of evangelicals in the U.S. Cerebus survives the battle with the assassin and then gives Lord Julius some free advice about running the country. So Cerebus kind of does agree with the assassin but also the assassin wasn't paying him anything so he deserved to be thrown five stories to his death. Lord Julius says, "You can rest assured that I'll give the matter all the attention I feel it deserves." Is there a better way to tell somebody to shove it than that? It's so elegant! In Aardvark Comments, Dave Sim answers a letter on how to go about self-publishing. And so his role as Independent Comic Book Publishing Mentor begins! In his list of things you'll need to get together to successfully publish your own comic book, he kindly leaves out "talent." Obviously Dave understood how to go about getting something published but he also put in the hard work and had the talent to produce a comic book that began well above mediocre or average. I can't imagine a lot of self-published books began at this high of a plateau. And even if they were eventually capable of Cerebus quality, how long are readers going to give them to get there? Probably not even two issues, would be my guess.
Tumblr media
The Single Page had a comic called "Sex Education" by April. I thought the first two panels were cute.
Cerebus #14 Rating: A+. As with Elrod and Red Sophia and The Cockroach, Lord Julius' first appearance is a banger. Dave Sim never once falters with Lord Julius' repartee. Solid gags throughout. Sim really is a master of dialogue and, to think, it only gets better.

Annotated edition of May 3 Week in Ethereum News
As it is wont to do, the newsletter buried the lede: ProgPoW is indefinitely shelved.
I think it’s been relatively clear since last time that ProgPoW wasn’t going to happen.  The leads of the two largest clients are against it personally, plus it’s quite clear that there isn’t anything close to community consensus. If anything, at the moment the majority of the community opposes it.  Greg Colvin bringing it up again last week unfortunately made it harder to do in the case where we do actually need it, ie an ASIC manufacturer has a 10x breakthrough but is only selling the machines privately to control 50%+ of the network.
I’d say it’s unclear whether ACD continues to be a thing.  To me it feels like an experiment which was worth trying but has become calcified, which needs a complete refresh in terms of both process and non-technical people involved.  But inertia is also a very strong force.  To overcome that, Ethereum should have a strong culture of continuously sunsetting things if they are not working.
One amusing thing to me has been the idea that ProgPoW is an AMD/Nvidia conspiracy.  Given that ETH price declining in 2018 absolutely destroyed their earnings and share price, those two should have been conspiring! Yet if they were, then they did an exceptionally bad job at it.  Instead everyone I know got the impression that the GPU manufacturers were indifferent.  There are some competing interests for them of course - the anger of their traditional gaming market, plus AI/neural net researchers - but it still surprises me how they did not get involved at all.
Despite the noise, Ethereum governance works!  I remember polling everyone I talked to at EthDenver2019 about whether they supported ProgPoW and (at the time I was pro-ProgPoW; I’d say my position is much more complicated now) being disappointed at how everyone I talked to was against it.
I’m very glad we don’t have on-chain governance where a few exchanges/whales could collude to push things through.  Because of that, I’d say on-chain governance will drastically limit the market cap of any basechain’s native token.

Eth1
Latest core devs call. Tim Beiko’s notes. Updates on EIPs for eth2 curve, EVM subroutines. ProgPoW shelved due to clear lack of consensus. Discussion of migrating to binary trie
Analysis of EIP-2315 simple EVM subroutines
DHT+SkipGraph for chain and state data retrieval
Notes from the fee market change call
Vitalik’s EIP1559 fee market change FAQ
There’s a risk of being repetitive, but much of the eth1 work does not lend itself to high-level summaries.  Folks are discussing the technical details of EVM improvements (eg, subroutines), as well as getting clients to be stateless (eg the DHT and Skipgraph link).   And we’re also talking through EIP1559 in light of Dan Finlay’s escalator algo alternative proposal.
One development not mentioned is that Martin Swende has come around to Alexey’s gas/oil proposal instead of his previous approach of penalties for trie misses.
Eth2
Latest what’s new in Eth2
Schlesi multi-client testnet launched with Lighthouse and (slightly updated) Prysmatic clients. Then Nimbus joined Schlesi a few days later.
Bitfly has a Schlesi explorer
Nimbus client update – up to date, joining Schlesi testnet, RFP for security audits, and benchmarking Nimbus on a 2018 midrange phone
Update from ConsenSys’s TXRX team: prkl network monitoring tool, verifiable precompiles, cross-shard tx simulator, fork choice testing, discv5 sim, and work on turning off proof of work.
A step-by-step guide on joining Prysmatic’s Topaz testnet for Windows10 and MacOS
ConsenSys’s high-level eth2 FAQ
I don’t really do corrections in the newsletter, because once you send an email, you can’t easily clarify your language without sending another email.
But, if you click the “Nimbus joined Schlesi,” then it appears to me that Nimbus is receiving the blocks and following the chain, but not proposing/attesting/etc. I probably should have been more clear when I said “joined.”

Channels funding channels: how state channels reduce latency and onchain transactions
This series feels to me like a “yes, state channels are almost here now, let’s get ready to reconsider how to use them.”   Productionizing any new technology isn’t easy, and finding the uses that best fit the tradeoffs is not trivial.  Seems like this is that series.

Dragonfly releases an oracles tracker
Synthetix CTO Justin Moses on 10 things they did to improve their Ethereum development experience. tldr: Buidler, Slither, TheGraph, and Tenderly.
It feels like a very undercommented trend how most devs now tell me that their stack is Buidler + Waffle + ethers, and increasingly Typescript as well.  Of course, dev tool stacks are perpetually in flux, but this seems to be the stack du jour.
This isn’t new either.  After writing the paragraph above, I remembered that Connext’s Rahul had written something about a similar stack 3 months ago.  I go back and check Rahul’s recommendation: Buidler + Waffle + Ethers + typescript.   If this was a chatbox, I would put a rofl emoji, but in prose this seems less appropriate.

Renew your ENS names or you will lose them. Names start to expire May 4th
Forgive me the clickbait - you actually have 90 days grace period if your domain expired, but I don’t want anyone to miss this if their domain has expired.
If you haven’t contributed to Tornado’s trusted setup ceremony, I recommend that you do.  Assuming that the software works correctly, you can ensure that Tornado becomes trustless for you by participating!   It literally takes just a few seconds to start, and then you leave your browser tab open for about 3 minutes.  You can even contribute multiple times.
Enterprise
Hyperledger Besu v1.4.4, added priv_getLogs, added Splunk integration
Governance, DAOs, and standards
Governance processes for Maker and Compound add WBTC to Maker and USDT to Compound. TBTC also proposed for Maker
Maker’s MIPs ratification vote is live
MetaClan: DAOs for in-game coordination
ERC2611: Geotimeline Contact Tracing Data Standard
Last call: ERC1363 Payable Token
Last call: EIP1193 Eth provider Javascript API
ERC 2612: permit, 712-signed approvals
EIP2357: Total difficulty in block header
Lots of blowback to Maker adding WBTC.  I very much understand the criticism, but to me it looks like Maker is taking reasonable measures, given the current situation where DAI is trading a little rich on the peg.  It’s true that permissioned assets have some risk, but this is literally why MKR is supposed to have value: because those MKR holders make good decisions.
Now perhaps you don’t like that model, and that also makes sense, designing for stablecoins is a large solution space.  But this has always been the Maker vision.  And I say this as someone who does not hold any MKR, and never has (though you’re welcome to give me some!).
Application layer
DeFiZap and DeFiSnap merged to be ZapperFi: now track and trade your DeFi together
Gnosis Safe apps: interact with apps straight from the Gnosis Safe interface
dforce/lendfme plan post-hack: user airdrop, dSAFU insurance fund, large bug bounty
OpenBazaar now supports Eth
A rough proposal for a GasToken forward
Everest: a project registry from TheGraph and MetaCartel
I know I have said this before, but the ebb and flow between sections is fascinating to me.  The stuff for devs section was full this week, but the app layer was a little light.  Maybe I just missed stuff.
Arbitrary “how much of this section is DeFi” count: 3/6
Tokens/Business/Regulation
UMA did an Initial Uniswap Offering, and there was a 5-10x spike
It appears Telegram will have to return $1.2 billion to investors
Ideo’s Simple Agreement for Future Governance for DeFi
Auditing the 10k top Eth addresses: ETH is better distributed than BTC and a bunch of other interesting claims
I again note that US federal regulators continue to bailout Silicon Valley investors from the worst deals that Silicon Valley did in late 2017/early 2018.
I’d say it’s inevitable that we’re going to see some folks copy UMA.  Watch for it.
Adam Cochran’s onchain activity of top 10k addresses is very interesting.  Definitely some undersupported claims in there, but certainly worth a read.  This is the second time he wrote a 100+ tweetstorm and then compiled it to a blog post.  Personally I prefer viewing it as a blog post.
General
EtherScan Connect: an alpha for mapping addresses with a leaderboard
a16z raises $515m crypto fund
Vitalik’s review of Gitcoin grants round 5
SuperMarlin: no trusted setup with DARK polynomial commitment
“alpha for mapping addresses with a leaderboard“ is another thing I could have said more eloquently.   It’s an interesting attempt by Etherscan to give something to their community, though of course it comes with risks.
There’s something amusing about a16z announcing a new fund, mentioning Bitcoin, and then mostly talking about the stuff that’s being built on Ethereum, without actually mentioning Ethereum.   People like to talk about being contrarian investors.  Wanna know how buying ETH is somehow still a contrarian play in crypto right now?  It’s right there.
zk continues to just explode.  It almost seems like plug and play, where people are pulling out the parts of different schemes that they like and putting in others, depending on the tradeoffs you want around trusted setups, verifier time, prover cost, etc.

PAX Australia 2017 Day 3
There are no notes for Day 2 because I spent it socialising a little and sleeping a lot.
Queer Coded: A History of LGBTQIA+ Gaming
David Gaider Q&A
Brian Fairbanks Talks about Addressing Accessibility Through Game Design
Misc: I spent a chunk of the day in the diversity lounge which was fun. I met some great people at the Gender Diverse card game, and got to the semi finals of the Xena Nintendo 64 Fighting Game Tournament (there were only three rounds, but given how much I suck at fighting games this was still a happy surprise, and a sign of what a random button masher the game is)
The gender neutral toilets near the diversity lounge were very well done, unlike GCAP the original signs weren't visible and "with stalls/urinals" was in small letters like an afterthought.
I didn't break anything on Day 3 but did break a mug the next morning. Also the cinema in the Crown Casino is surprisingly inaccessible.
Despite the various mishaps I had a great time and will definitely come again next time we can afford it.
Queer Coded: A History of LGBTQIA+ Gaming
I missed the second half of this to see David Gaider, feeling very annoyed at the programmer.
Anny Sims @ChattyAnny on twitter (I was too slow to get the others!) Keely Thirkell Hayley Williams Soap Pejovic
Most queer characters are just queer coded, with plausible deniability. "It's up to you".Tendency for queer characters to be villains. Indie games tend to be more queer friendly than AAA games.
Lesbians: First known queer character in games: 1986 Moonmist had side-character who was a lesbian murderer.
Other notable lesbian characters:
KOTOR 2003, Juhani, first queer Star Wars character
Gone Home 2013
Dragon Age Inquisition Sera (I thought Sam Traynor from Mass Effect 3 came first?)
Tracer from Overwatch 2016
Trans characters:
1988 Birdo from Super Mario Brothers 2 "A male who believes he is female"
Lots of others but all terrible. Jokes and villains. Trans women seen as threat. Poison from Final Fight 1989, "so you can hit a woman".
Krem DAI 2014 trans man, You can't go "Ok, cool".
Hainly Adams MEA 2017 trans woman. Tells you her deadname, this was patched.
Horizon: Zero Dawn 2017 trans man
Dream Daddy 2017 trans man. One throw away line about wearing a binder, had to be clarified by writers. Non binary people and cosplayers wear binders too!
How do you make it clear they're trans without them implausibly outing themselves or just having it be word of god?
Gay men:
1993 fmv Dracula Unleashed has speaking role
Tended to be background characters, jokes and villains again. No m/m relationships shown onscreen.
Dreamfall: the Longest Journey 2006 (not made super clear until 2015)
Steve Cortez Mass Effect 3 2012
Dorian DAI 2014
Dorian knew exactly what his sexuality was. Coming of age narratives get boring.
Bi Characters (no picture because they're invisible):
1993 Ultima 7 part 2 bi character propositions character regardless of gender.
"Slutty bisexuals". A lot of characters are playersexual and it never comes up outside the relationship.
Zevran DAO 2009
Borderlands 2009
Fable 2004 let player be bi, Fable 2 2008 added bi PCs
Playersexual:
Only queer in the context that they will date players of both genders, but you don't see that unless you play as both.
Dragon Age 2 2011, Anders only mentions his ex-boyfriend if you play as a male PC
Fallout 4 2015. Did have background queer characters.
Stardew Valley 2016
Non Binary:
1995 Chrono Trigger villain
Often robots, aliens or other non human
Frisk Undertale 2015
Life is Strange 2015
Zer0 Borderlands 2 2012
Turing Read Only Memories
Some games let you have gender neutral pronouns.
David Gaider Q&A
1999 Working on Balder's Gate 2, didn't talk about his sexuality at work. Figured he would always be writing stories for straight people.
He was shocked to hear Jade Empire was having same sex romance. Got to be lead writer on DAO after that. "So I can put same sex romances in, right?". More economical to have bi romances, but he would have been happier having some gay characters.
Feeling iffy about playersexuality after DA2, he asked for 2 straight, 2 bi, 2 gay for DAI. "Minority content" is weighed via the percentage of those who play it and those who appreciate it. Eg 5% play dwarves but most see it as a positive thing to be able to do.
Most of his time was spent on the actual plot but Dorian was the most personal writing.
He was targeted by Gamergate but it doesn't compare to, for example, how much Jennifer Helper was targeted.
10 years on Dragon Age was enough, his head would explode if he had to write another story about templars and mages.
How did you get the job: His story is very specific. He was managing a hotel and a comic book artist in his spare time. A friend was a character artist at Bioware but Gaider wasn't really aware of the specifics. Bioware told their employees "If you know anyone who does game related writing let us know", the friend gave them Gaider's LARP rule book without asking. Got a call, gave the stories he wrote in highschool, got offered a job. He said no, it didn't pay enough, but then he got fired from the hotel. It felt like a sign.
Who do you think will take the romance torch from Bioware: he’s not sure they're giving it up? EA treats romance fans as a reliable audience who don't need to be advertised to, even though it's why a lot of people play in his experience (though obviously those are the kinds of fans he will tend to meet). There is an underserved audience.
Most proud of: Lots of stuff he's not proud of. Wishes he'd been more involved in community discussions early on. Proud that the team tackled issues as they started arising. Proud of the company for standing by them. Most proud of Dragon Age 2 despite the mixed response. They had very little time to create it. It’s like a very big first draft. They had a plan but didn't get to compare notes once things were written, so he had to trust the team would stick to plan as much as they could despite things being cut on the fly. Team said they were happy in a post-game survey, didn't feel he was too dictatorial.
What does your writing look like, a screenplay? A cutscene does. But it’s generally structured like a tree that expands and then contracts back to the core path before expanding again. Flow charts.
Favourite relationship in a game? Morden in Mass Effect. Cried more than in a movie. Tali was his space girlfriend. Of the ones he's worked on, Morrigan will always be closest. She represents Dragon Age to him. Joyous time working with Claudia Black, first celebrity he'd worked with. Flemeth was originally Arabic, but that actress couldn't do it so they got Kate Mulgrew. They stopped looking for an Arabic actress for Morrigan and looked for someone who matched Kate Mulgrew. Claudia Black's audition tape was her reading Smack That like a beat poet. Gaider was very nervous, he'd never spoken to any actor before. First rule he was told was don't compare them to another celebrity, so naturally he said "I had Helena Bonham Carter in mind when I wrote Morrigan". Claudia Black said "So you're saying I'm a cheap Helena Bonham Carter ;D". She would say "Does he want me to do it more like Helena?" during recording.
Has being so closely associated with diversity had downsides? He may be gay but he's still white and a dude. He feels like it's all he talks about conventions sometimes. Teams need to sit down and look at what they've made. Lot of things made individually without concern for the bigger picture eg only 15% speaking roles in DAI were female until they stopped and looked at it and fixed it.
"We didn't think about it" is no longer a defense. He wants to help with that, but we should be helping other marginalised voices get into the industry and amplifying their voices.
Wishes it could just be expected and we didn't have to discuss it.
He likes dating sim mechanics in the context of a larger story. But he does like the idea of romance not being as tertiary as it's been in Bioware games, romance as part of the adventure eg a romantic adventure. He's not really interested in social sims or day to day relationships. "My idea of a spicy relationship is to have my life threatened."
Why do you think most AAA companies try to avoid discussions of lgbt stuff, why is it taking so long? Because it's Pandora's Box. There is more being added casually. But if they do nothing they get lumped in with the rest of the industry. As soon as they do anything there are 2 sides: 1. why are you doing this, you're politicising your game. 2. Why aren't you doing more, whatever you did is wrong and not good enough.
Not that flawed attempts should be above criticism. But by mostly focusing criticism on the games that did anything rather than nothing, people have increased the feeling that it's Pandoras box. He understands that it feels like those developers might listen to criticism but the dynamic is sending the wrong lesson.
My question: How do you think inclusion of non binary player characters can work with including gay and lesbian love interests instead of just having playsexuality? “We've thought about it”. He defined playersexual for audience, like Shroedinger's sexuality. He doesn't like it when the only way to have something show up is to have the character talk about it. eg asexual: character would have to sit you down and explain what asexuality is. Is unsexy as a feature. Explaining nuances of sexuality is off putting. If there was more nuance across the industry that would mean no one game has to do everything. Any one game can have only so much within it.
(This doesn't actually answer my question. I discussed it with my husband afterwards and even he didn't understand what I was asking, so I may have garbled it in my nervousness)
Are some choices "canon"? One of the features of Mass Effect and Dragon Age was the continuity of choices. No "canon" but there is a default. A lot of people feel like they have to play the whole series to get the full experience, was off putting, and he found the Keep a nightmare as a writer.
They had editors keeping track of which choices were incompatible. And that was just the third game. "Can you imagine for a fourth game? Phew! Not my problem :D"
Have you thought about the morals of gamifying romance, saying what people want to hear to get sex? Dragon Age didn't work that way, sex was not at the end. Some characters in DAI had no sex scenes, sex is optional for Dorian's romance. It's a game, everything is gamified, you can't simulate actual relationships. For proper reactivity you’d have to mark every response and keep track of inconsistency, but that’s too much work. Same with polyamory: too many variables!
Maybe get away from the approval system? Pay more attention to overall choices in major quests etc instead of individual lines.
Bi characters in DAI were bi from the start. Not the first thing that comes up during character creation eg Dorian started out as "the good Tevinter". Helps avoid too many assumptions based on sexuality. But once characters started solidifying they would think about who worked for what sexualities. There's no set way to write someone "as" bi, but the writer can have them talk about relevant things in other scenes. Sera's writer is a straight dude, he didn't want to write About The Lesbian Experience, and got lesbians in the company to check out what he was writing.
Have relationships gotten more or less complicated? In Balder's gate 2 there was a single sequence of romance scenes which you could get kicked off. Dragon Age had approval. If it gets complicated but the player can't see it or understand how reactions relate to their previous actions it just seems random or predetermined. Unless they say "I am angry at you because of X", but noone says that.
Brian Fairbanks Talks about Addressing Accessibility Through Game Design
lostandhound1 on twitter
His notes.
He's not blind himself, and while he obviously cares a lot about accessibility had an unfortunate tendency to treat disabled people as a separate, if respected, "Other" to himself and the audience, even though I was right there in a bright red mobility scooter. He advocated person first language, "a person with blindness" etc, but not all disabled people like it and it shouldn't be presented as unambiguous best practice. I'm building up the energy to talk to him about it.
He's a sound designer.
Audio games: designed for people with a vision disability.
Audio game jam: the games tended to be about blindness as a bad thing. It felt victimising.
How can we make people feel powerful?
He was inspired by his dog's amazing sense of smell. The mechanic is that you follow an invisible trail using sound cues, a humming noise that gets louder and quieter.
Sighted people struggle with extracting information from sound. The game is more difficult for sighted people.
He had to add fruit on the ground as an accessibility measure for sighted people.
All music is diegetic: happening inside the world of the game, eg characters are singing.
There's a lack of much budget for audio games, since they're never going to make much money.
In 30 years current 30-something gamers will need accessible games.
Accessibility tends to be added as an afterthought or accident.
For example Pokemon has unique sounds for materials, collisions, monsters that accidentally make it accessible.
Sony reader: US only
Microsoft narrator: good but hard to use as a developer
EA: Proactively adding blind accessibility
Fighting games are often in stereo, blind players can play and even win tournaments.
Demand more from your games.
Developers: find a consultant. Address accessibility early.
It's about empathy. People with disability deserve the same stories to take part in as everyone else.
gameaccessibilityguidelines.com
daisyalesoundworks
binaural sound is going to make a big difference
audiogames.net: where blind gamers go to play games. They're supportive if you ask for advice and feedback.
People don't mind if you don't do immersive, game specific voices and just rely on the screenreader
Sound designers need more love to make VR accessible.
Braille games?? He doesn't know much about it.
Curb cut effect examples: curb cuts for wheelchairs but also useful for prams etc. Subtitles. Think about short term problems that benefit from accessibility as well eg the screen is broken, there's sunlight on the screen etc.
Sounds of a blind person navigating their desktop. To me it sounds like a mangled garble of little bursts of cut off computer speech, here’s a description of what’s going on.

Video
youtube
Anita Sarkeesian’s final Tropes Vs Women in video games video.  And I feel like we’ve come full circle with this one.  By which I mean, most of the points raised in this one were found in her Damsel videos(her very first ones).  For that reason I probably wouldnt have bothered with this video, but hey this is the last one, with any luck I’ll never have to talk about her again(especially since she seems to want to move into political/anti-trump stuff) besides it gives me a good excuse to rant about Bioshock Infinite(consider this your warning).
1:09 Well its too fucking bad you just did.  Heres the thing about Bioshock Infinite, while yes racism plays a major role in the games story, at the end of the day, its not really a story about racism.  Its about revolutions, and why they are almost always bullshit.  When you look historically at uprisings and revolutions(with a VERY few exceptions) what you get is a lot of death, a lot of destruction, and little-to nothing to show for it as the regime that takes over is just as brutal and oppressive as the one before.  To that end the moral isnt so much ‘the truth is in the middle’ as ‘violence is not the answer.’
Now it would be fair to say that point(and the idea of Booker as seeking atonement for his history of violence) does get somewhat muddled by the fact that most of the gameplay consists of violently killing people.  But I’v rarely seen anybody raise that criticism.  Which is why I think a lot of the people upset about Bioshock Infinite didnt really get it.  As Anita clearly didnt.
1:38 She also uses her tear powers throughout the game as part of gameplay.  But I’m not exactly sure what else you would expect from her.  I mean, as I said most of the gameplay consists of combat.  And while yes, you will later seem to suggest the problem is that lady sidekicks arent more active in combat, that would make no sense for Elizabeth.  She has no weapon knowledge or combat experience, and is clearly shown as being afraid and uncomfortable with how violent Booker is.
1:59 its a common trope in video games for doors to be exceedingly difficult to open, remember in God of War you have to sacrifice a guy to open one, or hell Anita, you claim to be a fan of Zelda, so you should be familiar with the puzzles needed to open many doors there.  I could go on with examples, but door opening isnt ‘basic and menial’ in games.
2:18 and these are much more memorable aspects to how the game interacts with her than the door opening thing.
2:32 Again, I’m not exactly sure what you would expect considering that most of the gameplay mechanics consist of killing people.  And it just occured to me that you dont include any rpgs in this video.  You’d think that would be a good place to look for some positive examples(Whinne for one).  But I digress
3:17 Well after this video you wont have to.
3:33 Okay, I’m not going to point out that you can find gender-flipped versions of this pretty easily, since Anita herself acknowledges and dismisses these later.  I will however, point out that NOBODY likes escort missions.  That was why Elizabeth and  Ellie in The Last of Us were invulnerable in combat.  Having to protect them through the whole game would have been a huge pain in the ass.
4:02 I think this is more of a case-by-case basis.  I dont know if I ever actually beat Ico(if I had its been a long time), so I cant really comment too much on this one specifically.  So let’s go back to Elizabeth.  For most players, her tear powers, her bringing you to the future, and what she does at the ending(I wont give spoilers, but I’m sure my readers know what I’m talking about) are far, far more memorable than her lockpicking skills.  What people take away from the game, in this case is much more the narrative than the gameplay.
4:14 Yep, and pretty much everybody I know agrees thats the one flaw in an othewise near perfect game. Although that said, I did kind of like the parts where you actually play AS Ashley.  It was a nice change of pace.
4:38 I dont know if I’d say its my favorite part.  But I did like the inclusion of puzzle elements, they were a nice break from the combat.
4:47 Thats pretty damn broad.  But  I know you are going to immediately qualify that statement.  So whatever.
5:50 I think you mispronounced ‘badass sniper who can single handedly take out an entire team of Skulls while you hide like a little bitch’(yes I’v done that)
6:00 Are you now implying that compliments are bad?  I’m not even entirely sure what her point is with this section, so I’ll skip it.
6:45 I’m pretty sure that when you are trapped in a castle full of parasite monsters, pretty much everyones goal and desires are going to be getting the hell out of there.
7:09 and again I note you haven’t looked at any rpgs.  Because theres pleanty of examples from there...
7:16 unless you are talking about Bioware games, or dating sims, most games arent really about relationships.
7:40 Again, I’m not going to point out exceptions, because Anita will acknowledge these only to dismiss them.
8:16 that would be all well and good, if you could demonstrate that such ideas are as commonplace as you imply.  I mean I get that you are assuming feminist theory here, and going through to explain these things might be overly long and distracting.  However, it does mean that people who arent already sold on that ideology arent going to be inclined to accept it.  I guess thats a long winded way of saying that you really should have figured out who your audience is:  Is it fellow feminists?  Gamers?  General audiences?

Google, Nokia, Qualcomm are investors in $230M Series A2 for Finnish phone maker, HMD Global
Mobile device maker HMD Global has announced a $230M Series A2 — its first tranche of external funding since a $100M round back in 2018 when it tipped over into a unicorn valuation. Since late 2016 the startup has exclusively licensed Nokia’s brand for mobile devices, going on to ship some 240M devices to date.
Its latest cash injection is notable both for its size (HMD claims it as the third largest funding round in Europe this year); and the profile of the strategic investors ploughing in capital — namely: Google, Nokia and Qualcomm.
Though whether a tech giant (Google) whose OS dominates the world’s smartphone market (Android) becoming a strategic investor in Europe’s last significant mobile OEM (HMD) catches the attention of regional competition enforcers remains to be seen. Er, vertical integration anyone? (To wit: It’s a little over two years since Google was slapped with a $5BN penalty by EU regulators for antitrust violations related to how it operates Android — and the Commission has said it continues to monitor the market ‘remedies’.)
In a further quirk, when we spoke to HMD Global CEO, Florian Seiche, ahead of today’s announcement, he didn’t expect the names of the investors to be disclosed — but a press spokesperson had already shared them with us so he duly confirmed the trio are investors in the round. (But wouldn’t be drawn on how much equity Google is grabbing.)
HMD’s smartphones run on Google’s Android platform, which gives the tech giant a firm business reason for supporting the mobile maker in growing the availability of Google-packed hardware in key growth markets around the world.
And while HMD likens its consistent (and consistently updated) flavor of Android to the premium ‘pure’ Android experience you get from Google’s own-brand Pixel smartphones, the difference is the Finnish company offers devices across the range of price points, and targets hardware at mobile users in developing markets.
The upshot is relatively little overlap with Google’s Pixel hardware, and still plenty of business upside for Google should HMD grow the pipeline of Google services users (as it makes money by targeting ads).
Connoisseurs of mobile history may see more than a little irony in Google investing into Nokia branded smartphones (via HMD), given Android’s role in fatally disrupting Nokia’s lucrative smartphone business — knocking the Finnish giant off its perch as the world’s number one mobile maker and ushering in an era of Android-fuelled Asian mobile giants. But wait long enough in tech and what goes around oftentimes comes back around.
“We’re extremely excited,” said Seiche, when we mention Google’s pivotal role in Nokia’s historical downfall in smartphones. “How we are going to write that next chapter on smartphones is a critical strategic pillar for the company and our opportunity to team up so closely with Google around this has been a very, very great partnership from the beginning. And then this investment definitely confirms that — also for the future.”
“It’s a critical time for the industry therefore having a clear strategy — having a clear differentiation and a different point of view to offer, we believe, is a fantastic asset that we have developed for ourselves. And now is a great moment for us to double down on this,” he added.
We also asked Seiche whether HMD has any interest in taking advantage of the European Commission’s Android antitrust enforcement decision — i.e. to fork Android and remove the usual Google services, perhaps swapping them out for some European alternatives, which is at least a possibility for OEMs selling in the region — but Seiche told us: “We have looked at it but we strongly believe that consumers or enterprise customers actually love [Google] services and therefore they choose those services for themselves.” (Millions of dollars of direct investment from Google also, presumably, helps make the Google services business case stack up.)
Nokia, meanwhile, has always had a close relationship with HMD — which was established by former Nokia execs for the sole purpose of licensing its iconic mobile brand. (The backstory there is a clause in the sale terms of Nokia’s mobile device division to Microsoft expired in 2016, paving the way for Nokia’s brand to be returned to the smartphone market without the prior Windows Mobile baggage.)
Its investment into HMD now looks like a vote of confidence in how the company has been executing in the fiercely competitive mobile space to date (HMD doesn’t break out a lot of detail about device sales but Seiche told us it sold in excess of 70M mobiles last year; that’s a combined figure for smartphones and feature phones) — as well as an upbeat assessment of the scope of the growth opportunity ahead of it.
On the latter front US-led geopolitical tensions between the West and China do look poised to generate a tail-wind for HMD’s business.
Mobile chipmaker Qualcomm, for example, is facing a loss of business, as US government restrictions threaten its ability to continue selling chips to Huawei; a major Chinese device maker that’s become a key target for US president Trump. Its interest in supporting HMD’s growth, therefore, looks like a way for Qualcomm to hedge against US government disruption aimed at Chinese firms in its mobile device maker portfolio.
While with Trump’s recent threats against the TikTok app it seems safe to assume that no tech company with a Chinese owner is safe.
As a European company, HMD is able to position itself as a safe haven — and Seiche’s sales pitch talks up a focus on security detail and overall quality of experience as key differentiating factors vs the Android hoards.
“We have been very clear and very consistent right from the beginning to pick these core principles that are close to our heart and very closely linked with the Nokia brand itself — and definitely security, quality and trust are key elements,” he told TechCrunch. “This is resonating with our carrier and retail customers around the world and it is definitely also a core fundamental differentiator that those partners that are taking a longer term view clearly see that same opportunity that we see for us going forward.”
HMD does use manufacturing facilities in China, as well as in a number of other locations around the world — including Brazil, India, Indonesia and Vietnam.
But asked whether it sees any supply chain risks related to continued use of Chinese manufacturers to build ‘secure’ mobile hardware, Seiche responded by claiming: “The most important [factor] is we do control the software experience fully.” He pointed specifically to HMD’s acquisition of Valona Labs earlier this year. The Finnish security startup carries out all its software audits. “They basically control our software to make sure we can live up to that trusted standard,” Seiche added.
Landing a major tranche of new funding now — and with geopolitical tension between the West and the Far East shining a spotlight on its value as alternative, European mobile maker — HMD is eyeing expansion in growth markets such as Africa, Brail and India. (Currently, HMD said it’s active in 91 markets across eight regions, with its devices ranged in 250,000 retail outlets around the world.)
It’s also looking to bring 5G to devices at a greater range of price-points, beyond the current flagship Nokia 8.3. Seiche also said it wants to do more on the mobile services side. HMD’s first 5G device, the flagship Nokia 8.3, is due to land in the US and Europe in a matter of weeks. And Seiche suggested a timeframe of the middle of next year for launching a 5G device at a mid tier price point.
“The 5G journey again has started, in terms of market adoption, in China. But now Europe, US are the key next opportunity — not just in the premium tier but also in the mid segment. And to get to that as fast as possible is one of our goals,” he said, noting joint-working with Qualcomm on that.
“We also see great opportunity with Nokia in that 5G transition — because they are also working on a lot of private LTE deployments which is also an interesting area since… we are also very strongly present in that large enterprise segment,” he added.
On mobile services, Seiche highlighted the launch of HMD Connect: A data SIM aimed at travellers — suggesting it could expand into additional connectivity offers in future, forging more partnerships with carriers.
“We have already launched several services that are close to the hardware business — like insurance for your smartphones — but we are also now looking at connectivity as a great area for us,” he said. “The first pilot of that has been our global roaming but we believe there is a play in the future for consumers or enterprise customers to get their connectivity directly with their device. And we’re partnering also with operators to make that happen.”
“You can see us more as a complement [to carriers],” he added, arguing that business “dynamics” for carriers have also changed substantially — and customer acquisition hasn’t been a linear game for some time.
“In a similar way when we talk about Google Pixel vs us — we have a different footprint. And again if you look at carriers where they get their subscribers from today is already today a mix between their own direct channels and their partner channels. And actually why wouldn’t a smartphone player be a natural good partner of choice also for them? So I think you’ll see that as a trend, potentially, evolving in the next couple of years.”

In a further quirk, when we spoke to HMD Global CEO, Florian Seiche, ahead of today’s announcement, he didn’t expect the names of the investors to be disclosed — but we’d already been sent press release material listing them so he duly confirmed the trio are investors in the round.
