Emici yataklar (Wicking Bed), bitkilerin suyunu etkin bir şekilde emmesini ve dağıtmasını sağlayan bir bahçe yatağı tasarımıdır. Bu sistemde, su rezervuarı ve emici tabaka bulunur. Su rezervuarı tabanında bulunur ve genellikle bir kap ya da su geçirmez bir zemin ile oluşturulur. Üstünde ise emici tabaka bulunur, bu tabaka suyu emer ve bitkilerin köklerine iletir.

Emici tabaka, genellikle kum, çakıl, turba yosunu veya diğer su emici malzemelerden oluşur. Bu tabakanın üstünde ise verimli bahçe toprağı veya bitki yetiştirmek için uygun bir karışım yer alır. Bitkilerin kökleri emici tabakanın içinden suyu çeker ve suyun bitkilerin ihtiyacına göre düzenli bir şekilde dağıtılmasını sağlar.

Wicking bed sistemi, bitkilerin sürekli nemli kalmasını sağlar ve suyu verimli bir şekilde kullanır. Sulama ihtiyacını azaltır ve bitki köklerinin suya daha kolay erişimini sağlar. Ayrıca, suyu alttan sulama prensibiyle kullanır, bu da yaprak hastalıklarının ve su kaybının azalmasına yardımcı olur.

Wicking bed sistemi, özellikle kısıtlı su kaynaklarına sahip bölgelerde, sıcak ve kuru iklimlerde veya sulama konusunda sorun yaşanan alanlarda tercih edilir. Bitkilerin sağlıklı büyümesini ve verimli bir şekilde yetiştirilmesini sağlar.

Emici tabaka: Su rezervuarının üzerinde yer alan tabaka, suyu emip bitkilerin köklerine iletmek için kullanılır. Emici tabaka olarak genellikle aşağıdaki malzemeler tercih edilir:

Kum, Çakıl, Turba yosunu, Süngerimsi materyaller

Bahçe toprağı: Emici tabakanın üzerinde yer alan ve bitkilerin köklerinin büyümesini destekleyen uygun bahçe toprağı veya bitki yetiştirme karışımı.

Bitki materyali: Seçilen bitkilerin fideleri veya tohumları, wicking bed sistemi üzerinde yetiştirilmek üzere kullanılır.

Bu malzemeler, wicking bed sistemi için temel gereksinimleri karşılamak ve suyun bitkilere etkin bir şekilde iletilmesini sağlamak amacıyla kullanılır. Ancak, kullanılan malzemeler proje ölçeğine, bitki ihtiyaçlarına ve yerel şartlara bağlı olarak değişebilir.

Yesterday was #wickingbed time! In our little sunroom at #GeoEchoFarm we cut some old apple crates in half and nailed on the back of each some pallet wood. Nestled them in by the window and lined them with the old plastic from the greenhouse poly tunnel. We placed slotted pipe in the bottom and plumbed it up to the top like you can see in the pic. Half-filled it with rock, laying black permeable weed-cloth over that and a short bit of hose on top of that through the box as an overflow. Then the fun part: soil-building time! We layered (from bottom up): compost, straw, lucerne, zoo-poo, compost, comfrey, sugarcane mulch, rock dust, biochar, compost, sugar cane mulch. Finished up planting kale, spring onions, Passionfruit, blueberry, chives, chard, lettuces. Our raised garden beds are quite rotten so we purchased some ibc’s to convert into wicking beds. Hubby cut a few in half so tomorrow starts the transformation-pulling out the old and putting in the new. These will have timber surrounds(eventually) but the main aim is to get them changed over as quick as possible so I can plant out my seedlings. ROOTS Wicking Beds

Materials (and what we used):  --raised planter box (recycled fencing)  --waterproof liner (plastic tarp)  --wicking material (burlap sacks)  --wicking medium (tumbled glass)  --growing medium (compost)  --drain (PVC pipe) We created raised planter boxes by repurposing old fencing material. Pick a sunny spot in your yard and ensure that the ground is level and free of rocks, stumps, sharp objects, etc.

The planter box is lined with a tarp (or pond liner) to create a water reservoir for the bed.

Holes are drilled along the length of a PVC pipe and placed into the bottom of the wicking bed.

The bed is filled with 4" of tumbled glass and the PVC pipe is placed into the bed to allow the water to reach the reservoir.

A hole is drilled on the side of the bed to allow for adequate drainage of excess water.

The liner is stapled to the sides of the garden bed at the soil level.

The interior portion of the drainage pipe is covered in burlap to prevent debris from filling the pipe.

Burlap sacks create a barrier between the tumbled glass and the compost.

The bed is filled with compost

Spent the day, well into the night with the caveman ripping out the old timber beds (rotted after 7 years) and installing the ibc which we have cut amd converted into wicking beds. So we endured wind and got soaked to the bones but we managed to get 4 beds done. Transplanted 2 beds of asparagus and installed 2 beds of tomatoes. Today we are off to bright, got some work to do up there. Wicking bed summer restock. #tomatoes are already in half of one bed, and have been waitonf to be joined by some chilli plants. #jalepeno and #habenero chillis were added for friends and to try making some smoked jalepenos. The #habeneros were planted among #sweetcorn (hopefully it works) for space, and #cucumber in each corner of the #wickingbed .
