✨🌿I wish I could bottle the looks I get from people when they see me walking around the neighborhood with handfuls of “weeds” to put in a proper potion. You can always tell if there is a fellow green witch in your neighborhood just by how plentiful or scarce the wild plants are during harvest season. Luckily no one in my little corner of the planet has any idea how PRECIOUS these mullein stalks are. I’m turning the leaves into tea that helps keep the lungs healthy. Harvesting the THOUSANDS of seeds that come from one stalk, then dipping the stalks in local beeswax and herbs to make candles. DIANHONG RED TEA WILD FOREST

This “Red Wild Forest tea” by Eastern Leaves is made with the same trees of the pu-erh, the oxidation occurs in baskets and the leaves dry naturally under the sun. This red tea takes several months to reach the perfect point of maturation, developing a wide range of complex aromas maintaining them for long time. We are not talking about “aging” but “maturation” - it’s important to stress this to distinguish this red tea from pu-erh. Usually it is stored and sold in loose leaves, but my special tea friend @jurga_po of Prima Infusione has chosen a special edition ‘mini cake’ - which I thought it was pu-erh! 😅 🍂

Okay - so not every #outdoorlearning activity we have tried has been a success, I admit! For example, we tried to make #nettletea, apparently full of fabulous vitamins and good for the digestion.. and my son said a big fat ‘bleugh' 🤢 and has vowed never to drink 'nettle stuff' again. HOWEVER I do think that knowing how to make a natural tea is worth the bother, so this is how we did it! How To: We learnt this on a bushcraft course this spring, so we did it ‘proper’. We headed out into the forest, and boiled some water using a safe fire, and a kelly or storm kettle (these are amazing bits of kit, that heat water very fast using a chimney design). While one of us was keeping an eye on the kettle, the rest of us wandered around trying to pick the youngest, smallest nettle tops from the top of the nettles. Astonishingly, none of us got stung, but gloves are recommended. We took care not to pick nettles that grew near posts/fences (as yes, this is where dogs and people like to wee). We then poured the water into a bowl, and steeped and stirred the nettles for a few minutes, before pouring and having a sup. More: So this was not a stonking success from my son’s perspective, but as I have fabulous memories of drinking both freshly made mint tea, and also sage tea, in separate trips to Morocco made in just the same way - I will definitely do this again myself.
