Chapter 1.

Karma’s Actually Not That Bad

I finally got the nerve to do it. To move to Windige City. Out of my tiny and cramped apartment and into a cute cottage toward the edge. Much safer than where I used to live.

The city has all the skyscrapers and buildings you'd expect, however the farther you go toward the edge the more suburban it gets, until it's all gravel and dirt roads leading into dense forest area.

It's been pleasant enough, to avoid the daily hassle of life I just do my errands at night. I’ve always enjoyed taking relaxing moonlit walks down the pavement, just humming to myself.

I only ever see one man walking at night, he always seems to hum the same tune.

It's comforting, so I never feel nervous when passing him by. He seemed kind on the few occasions we've spoken, I'd probably have gotten to know him better if he hadn't been being stalked.

I was the only one to notice. The strange figure that followed him from the trees and bushes as he walked. I only noticed because the rustling was so loud.

Of course I alerted him immediately that he was being followed. His face went pale.

He said that he'd also noticed this and thought he'd just been going crazy.

I assured him this was not the case and suggested he change his walking times and patterns for a couple of days.

He tipped his head in thanks and I haven't heard from him since.

But that's not my main problem. My main problem is that whatever was targeting him is now targeting me.

Perhaps I was its goal all along, but there's no way to tell.

Tonight I'm especially on my toes.  

It's behind me right now.

Keeping to the shadows. I can feel it. Sense it. Like it's breathing right on the back of my neck. Close enough to grab and snap my throat, or choke the air from my lungs.

It's presence follows me even as I pick up my pace, speed walking towards my the edge of the city. It's a long walk and I don't know why I go further from civilization. The lights dim as they fade away behind me, the whole world is getting darker and darker.

This feeling I've felt before. I hate it.

That feeling of being chased. Like back then.

You know when you hear that noise behind you. The rustle and snarl of something inhuman watching from a tree, or even a stick cracking under someone's foot when you're walking alone.

The adrenaline fills you and you start running. You have no time to look back you just run. You can't scream because you're too busy pushing the air in and out of your lungs as you desperately try to survive.

But that damned thing is catching up. Soon it will be right on top of you. Ripping you to shreds. You're running faster than you've ever before. Sweating and sobbing. Hoping that someone, anyone will step out and save you.

But your brain seems to know better. It knows that there is only one thing capable of saving you and that's your legs. Your legs that are starting to wobble as you move. They burn from the lactic acid but you keep running.

You run because it's all you have. Your only defense and your only offence.

Hot tears run down your face. Home is in sight. Safety is so near. The familiar door handle gleams in the porch light.You just pray you left the door unlocked.

You didn't. So instead you fumble for your keys, lasting only a split second before it catches up.

Safety was so close but you failed. All that for nothing. It rips you to shreds like promised in front of your own home. You pass out knowing that it couldn't have saved you anyway.

But this time I'm ready, I pull out my keys, entering and shutting the door in one swift movement.

Leaning back and sliding down against the heavy oak door slows my nerves and I calm myself.

KNOCK KNOCK!

It scares me out of my skin and I jump to my feet, any calm demeanour I'd tried to retrieve vanished, fear taking its place. "Who's there?!"

A loud thud! catches my attention and I pull open my door. I don't know why. It represents everything I've ever been afraid of but I let it in.

Before me lies the figure that's been following me, chasing me. There's blood trickling down his leg from who knows where and he's covered in the fuzzy purples and blacks I know to be bruises.

The clothes he wears are torn and tattered and barely fit on his skinny frame. You can see his skin through the many holes and tears.

He stands and stumbles forward and I react by catching him. It surprises me but he doesn't seem like much of a threat. He seems to just need help.

That I can handle.

His breathing is just as ragged as his clothing. He looks up at me and my heart stops.

His skin, ghostly white. His hair, a blur of what I can only describe as pure white.

He's an elf.
