De vrijwilligers van de IJsclub Voortuitgang hebben het toch geflikt: in één nacht tijd een ijsbaan maken! Op vrijdag 1 december 2023 om 16.30 uur opent wethouder Bert Jan ten Oever officieel de ijsbaan op het Koopmansplein in Assen. Na de opening is de ijsbaan geopend voor vrij schaatsen tot 21.00 uur. Op 7 december wordt de kerstboom geplaatst op het Koopmansplein. De kerstboom komt dit jaar uit Veenhuizen. Dit jaar is er ook een nieuwe eyecatcher bij De Nieuwe Kolk. IJsbaan Koopmansplein De organisatie van de ijsbaan ligt bij stichting WintersAssen. Zij brengen dit jaar veel winterpret naar de binnenstad van Assen. Van vrij schaatsen tot curling arrangementen en van een gezellig schaatscafé met live muziek tot allerlei activiteiten voor het hele gezin. Kerstboom In oktober plaatste de gemeente Assen en Vaart in Assen een oproep, waarbij gevraagd werd een kerstboom te doneren voor het Koopmansplein. Er waren meerdere aanmeldingen en de keuze is gevallen op een boom in Veenhuizen. Op 7 december gaan de firma Hartenhof en hoveniersbedrijf Donker Groen de boom kappen en vervoeren naar het plein. Een dag later, op 8 december, wordt de boom versierd en worden de verlichte eyecatchers geplaatst.
