A new sculpture in the early stages. (Joy) . This one has been in the works for many weeks. I have the figure I shaped in my living room so it’s under constant scrutiny and consideration. How much do I want to solidify and how much to keep ephemeral and therefore “vulnerable” in its human frailty. . For this one, I am stitching her in places with a fine metal thread as I decide on the next steps… Is there any better feeling than beginning a new piece? Completing one is fabulous, but the excitement and all the unknowns and exploration in new works it’s something I find very energizing. How about you? So… The thing about my brand of sculpting - as opposed to painting - is that the progress images can be much less understandable or pretty. in fact, they are downright messy and ugly! LOL (a metaphor for life?) ;) . Nonetheless, I am making slow progress ..., but I will not be posting too many images as they really don’t show where I’m going… At some point I will maybe post sketches as I work things out... . Also, taking a video of this would pretty much only show parts of me or my hair as I move around the piece and block any lens I would set up… LOL . If anyone knows how to video a painfully slow process, but to make it be a fast action video, please PLEASE let me know how to do it! I would greatly appreciate it… . Thanks and happy Wednesday! The before and currently in progress pictures. I did a little more work on her today, but it is slow going and a very deliberate process. I am so glad I started painting her. Looking back at the original plaster and metal assemblage finished as a stone-textured off-white sculpture, she looks so unfinished to me now. I have been working on her for a while, but mostly looking and studying and thinking about it… I am trying to paint the sculpture as I do with my paintings, and as you can imagine it is much more challenging painting in the round. . when I get farther along, I will post a before and in progress photo if I can find a clean spot in my studio to take a photo… LOL . This sculpture was originally titled “awakening.“ The finish was a limestone textured paint over the plaster and wire assemblage/sculpture. . The exhibit I am in with about ten other MFA artists at BWI Airport “Respective Perspectives” closes tomorrow, 22 October. It has been hanging since late February, so I hope some of you or people you know I’ve gotten to see it. This is the first photograph of the exhibit that I have seen!
