been rereading hemlock grove so i decided to go through @withalisp and fell down an old ship rabbit hole and now i'm feeling emotional

‘ letha, can’t we be done exercising. ’ shay lets out a deep breath, body sagging a bit from all of the work. sure, it was technically jazzercise and yes, she did enjoy seeing letha in her eighties exercise jumpsuit ( mostly because her butt looked really nice in it but shay would never say that ) but shay also liked being able to breath as well. with nothing short of dramatics, shay flopped down on the floor. her arm coming to hold against her forehead, dampened from sweat. ‘ at least give me a ten minute break. i need a break, all of the breaks in fact. ’ her lungs burned, legs ached. shay would never again make fun of exercise moves called chassing or windmilling or whatever in the hell that woman on that video had said. that woman made it seem like she was having a great time. meanwhile, shay would have rather done anything but another stupid side leg lift. ‘ letha, i can see the light..it looks like donuts. lemon filled donuts. ’

the words catch her so off guard she almost things she’s imagined them. eyebrows furrowing together as she looks up quickly from the biology homework they’re doing together. sometimes shay wondered how letha managed to see right through her. as if letha opened a door right into her brain and looked around, picked up all her flaws and insecurities. and god if that didn’t make shay feel unnervingly vulnerable. was it that obvious? so obvious that she had a hard time find worth in herself when she was always finding it in others. ‘ sometimes i don’t think i am valuable. ’ her words spilled out before she could stop herself, like a river flooding it’s banks. ‘ it’s hard to find the light in myself sometimes. to find something i think it worth praise or worth loving. ’ the end of her mechanical pencils eraser taps the paper in front of her as she thinks about why that’s so. but she comes up a bit short. perhaps it was the years of her fathers inability to be proud of her. or the traumas she’s been through that she keeps to herself. ‘ maybe there isn’t anything about me worthy of value. ’

words normally would have been heard from roman’s lips instead escape letha’s.   they make his shoulders tense.   he doesn’t like to hear her voice say those words.   letha’s happiness should never be limited.   he wants her smile to be never-ending.   that’s the life he wants for the light that always pierced the darkness  ‒  back when they were younger.
