You can write on England, but what was written before keeps showing through, inscribed on the rocks and carried on floodwater, surfacing from deep cold wells. It's not just the saints and martyrs who claim the country, it's those who came before them: the dwarves dug into ditches, the sprites who sing in the breeze, the demons bricked into culverts and buried under bridges; the bones under your floor.

She says, 'I cannot imagine you as a child.'
He thinks, neither can I. I cannot picture myself.

Every time I think Gregory's character is inconsistent with strange development, I realize it's a direct result of Thomas not checking in on him or witnessing his development, so when Gregory lashes out, then goes back to normal, and then speaks like a child, or acts sarcastic, and it's seemingly makes no sense, i understand we're suppose to see Gregory like Thomas does.
I would have loved to see the story written through Gregory's perspective

Sometimes I’m fine, and then sometimes I remember that this is how Hilary Mantel writes about the death of Thomas Cromwell, and then I am beyond all sense and all words.
