I am not a big fan of shipping in general, much less shipping wars, but watching the CiarGwen-CiarFinn (WolfPrincess-FoxWolf, whatever) fight go by is particularly frustrating because some of the major arguments apply equally to either ship.

Cut because all of these ships are terrible triggery messes.

“[CiarFinn/CiarGwen] is canon!” Yes. They are both canon. It’s not subtle. (They are also all canonically terrible at sex, but people tend to forget that part.)

“Ciaran really cares about [Finn/Gwenaëlle], he defied his father about it!”: Ciaran defied his father to bring Finn into the Pack. Ciaran defied his father to keep visiting Gwenaëlle. Ciaran never defied his father about anything else major.

“[CiarGwen/CiarFinn] is abuse because [Gwenaëlle/Finn] is manipulating Ciaran!“ Yes they are. That is how you get Ciaran to do things (unless you are the BBW, the witch, or his mother when he was a kid), and considering Ciaran’s role model some other influence is highly desirable. (Gwenaëlle manipulates him more, and in a more calculated and personally ambitious way; Gwenaëlle also stops his destructive behavior way more than Finn ever managed.)

Honestly the point above possibly frustrates me the most because you could also say “[CiarGwen/CiarFinn] is abuse because [Gwenaëlle at the start/Finn] is not exactly in a position where it would be entirely safe to say no, and if Ciaran thought about anything ever he would have realized that”, but of course that never comes up in the ship wars. (I don’t think Ciaran is the Worst Ever -- he had a lot of reasons to turn out like he did (mostly his father), he’s not unwilling to change, and there are people he really cares about -- but Ciaran apologists can get. Tiresome.)

I think those are the big ‘basically same argument’ ones, but as long as I’m doing this here’s my take on some other common talking points--

Is CiarFinn incest? Debatable. Minimum childhood friends. Finn lived with them from when he was probably about eight, BBW never saw him as a son, Mrs. BBW may or may not have, what Finn and Ciaran think about it unknown. When they’re referred to as brothers it’s always in the context of the Pack, same as all the others. Finn never guilted about it. I think they think it’s not, but by modern standards they were basically adopted siblings, so... make of this what you will.

Did Ciaran rape Gwenaëlle before she woke up? I really don’t know about this one. On the one hand, she wasn’t just unconscious, she was Winter-touched -- barely breathing, extremely slow pulse, cold to the touch, emitting a subtle aura of dread, and harder to move than she should have been. No matter how beautiful she is this has to be more than a little offputting. On the other hand, no matter how fiery Ciaran’s nature, do we really believe just kissing could break someone out of Winter-touch? Really? And we know Ciaran is confused by the concept of consent.

Does Gwenaëlle care about Ciaran? I’m not sure how much Gwenaëlle is capable of caring about anyone, at this point. It’s not just the Winter -- she was ground zero for the Mirror breaking. Even if all the shards are gone there’s no way that didn’t do some lingering damage. But she’s reacted more emotionally to Ciaran than she has to anyone else (including Parry and her actual aunt).

Did Ciaran and Finn have any chemistry or did Ciaran just have the idea that’s what you’re supposed to do with the person you’re closest to who’s under you’re protection? Fuck if I know, I don’t see chemistry. Ciaran is definitely fucked up enough for that, though.

This much I’ll say for CiarFinn: They love each other. It’s an unhealthy relationship in too many ways to count, but they seriously do love each other.

This much I’ll say for CiarGwen: It starts off bad and is still really unhealthy, but after Gwenaëlle wakes up all the way and finds her feet, it’s a relationship with roughly equal agency.

And one more thing before I shut up about this trainwreck: YES, OBVIOUSLY the Pack doesn’t act anything like actual wolves, Finn outright SAYS (to Parry but also to the witch, earlier) that if one of them ACTUALLY gives in to wolf instincts they just run away into the woods and maybe eat a rabbit, most of the time they’re just using it as an excuse, because BBW was a toxic person who dragged down everyone who came into contact with him.
