I decided to make my own meme this week. About a week ago, I saw this tweet on Twitter (or X, I suppose) and immediately thought about how accurate it is when describing how my feelings are regarding Mr. Collins. I took a screenshot of the tweet and used Picsart to overlay it on top of the photo of Mr. Collins. The meme format is pretty popular online in the world of fandoms and pop culture as it follows a structure of putting a saying/quote on top of a photo of someone to insinuate that the quote describes the person/character in the photo. It’s meant to be funny and in this case, I think the quotation is pretty accurate. The tweet I chose in particular describes a situation of meeting a man who has never been told to shut up, and I paired it with Mr. Collins, obviously, as he is the epitome of a man who never shuts up.

In my opinion, Mr. Collins is genuinely insufferable and if he was a real person, I could not survive more than five minutes in a room with him. He talks about Lady Catherine de Bourgh incessantly as he is “eloquent of her praise” (Austen 48) to the point where it almost feels comical or like satire on Austen’s part. If Mr. Collins is in a chapter, he is usually talking about Lady Catherine and if he isn’t, don’t worry; he will most likely find some way to tie the conversation back to how grateful he is for her. However, while Mr. Collins is irritating and has the typical views on women, marriage, etc. of the time period, he seems to be one of the less terrible men in comparison to other Austen characters such as Willoughby, Wickham, and Thorpe. Maybe if he shut up about Lady Catherine from time-to-time, I could find him a little more tolerable.

GX Finalized-Subs!81 (WIP) - Sleepless in Yamanote

With the fixes and stuff I’ve finished up for 80, I’ve now started working on stuff for episode 81 before I work on revising both episodes’ scripts.  As part of that, I’m hitting the one to-do list item I flagged for myself back in 2020 and translating the 2chan-like thread that Shou/Judai and Kanda are looking at (Shou and Judai through Shou’s PDA in images 1 and 2, Kanda through his laptop on images 3-6).

Keeping in mind that this was a 2006-era thread (and thinking back to my Pojo/Janime days lol), I brushed up a bit on Japanese emoticons to make sure I conveyed those correctly--though I am still a little bit confused with the  “('Ａ`)ｳﾞｪﾉｱ” one; the Japanese Yahoo! Answers page or two and other sites I looked at to find more on its meaning mentioned it’s like a “cry that you can’t get out” so I figured the “QQ” one would work, but if there’s another equivalent someone might know about, lemme know lol.  “OTL” I’d known about for a while and I figure it’s a pretty decipherable one, and the “ ｷﾀ━━━━(ﾟ∀ﾟ)━━━━!!!!!” one (”there he is!!”) seemed to note a bit of sly excitement (kind of like a 😏 smirking, was my read; I thought about “\o/” but thought the smirk would work better since the following line has “((((((((;ﾟДﾟ))))))))ｶﾞｸｶﾞｸﾌﾞﾙﾌﾞﾙ” for a trembling-fear/scared reaction that I figured “D8″ would work well for, but again, lemme know if that could be better conveyed).  Also used Verdana for the font since forums around then did love Verdana, and I chose not to keep “Name” and “Timestamp” next to the names and timestamps to save on some redundancy.

Also worth mentioning, as I looked into this, that this whole asking-for-love-advice-online bit, as well as the “('Ａ`)ｳﾞｪﾉｱ” emoticon, seems to be referencing the Densha Otoko/Train Man story, where a nerdy guy/otaku on a train intervenes as women were being harassed, he goes on to date one of them, and it’s catalogued and followed up on through 2ch; the woman he dates also goes on to send him luxurious gifts, including goods from a “Benoist” British tea brand sold in Japan (the kana next to that emoticon sound out “benoa”).  This does explain why Kanda later goes up to Judai and Asuka and acts like Judai was accosting her (after Asuka poured water on him and the others), lol.  The Yamanote in Kanda’s username is also referencing the Yamanote Train Line, possibly also referencing the Densha Otoko story (his username is “yamanote-sen meguri,” which I translated here as “touring-the-yamanote-line”). (Also, the episode aired on 4/9, but these were posted on 4/18... interesting.)

Now, for the first shot, I’ll need to work it into the footage and add a little screen flickering (which I did before with this from my 5D’s “Dub-Uncut” project, so it shouldn’t be too hard), while for the second, it’s a quick zooming-out redo.  For that third shot it’s in (which I brightened by adding an Overlay-blended layer over the resized screen translation), I’ll have to mask Kanda back on top of the resized translation while he types his response to Judai, but also shouldn’t be too hard.  I’ll post an update once I do, lol.

Have you ever wondered why some things are digitized while others are not?

Not me, until I was annoyed when I wanted to access a resource only to find out that it was only available in a museum or a library far, far away.

Recently, I read an article that made me think about who does and does not have access to resources. Kamposiori, Warwick and Mohanty explained the stages of the research process, the difficulties that researchers encounter when digitizing resources like art and texts, what can be done to solve them. The author's style was very scientific and thorough and identified the following issues:

Lack of access to materials in private or smaller public collections as many remain undigitized

Access to locations (cost, language, accessibility, reliability of information, and availability to the public)

I have thought quite a bit about access as I am a Disabled student. I have found it a challenge to access textbooks and other resources, forcing me to adapt my learning and research processes.

Digitization on its own does not give full access to Disabled people. For digitization to be accessible, we must think beyond what is needed for neurotypical people and centre Disabled folk. Often what is stylistically pleasing to the eye makes it less accessible to Disabled folk.

Changing fonts are a straightforward way to give meaningful access. When creating texts, we need to think about improving access.

It’s much easier to read San-Serif fonts like Arial and Calibri.

Instead of fancy fonts.

When sharing images, we need to provide image descriptions and Alt Text. Digital resources must be available with OCR, font size options, colour overlays, audio recordings or text-to-speech. OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition, allowing screen readers to read the text. In Online Disabled community forums, you can easily see that the lack of OCR is a significant issue because of the volume of discussion. I rely on OCR to use my text-to-speech software, and blind students need OCR to access texts using text-to-speech or use a braille interface. Rarely are the needs of Disabled people even considered when we create digital sources. Texts must be digitized using formats that Disabled folk can access.

Digitizing text and artifacts gives everyone with internet — access. Imagine a world where everyone with the internet could access all texts and artifacts, even rare ones! When you think about it, access to sources democratizes learning. Access to the internet is another issue!

The cost and physical accessibility of visiting collections mean that some folk will never have access. Rarely do non-disabled people consider wheelchair accessibility, that stairs prevent access to artifacts and texts, signs without braille and large print and a lack of audio guides deny people entry. This needs to change.

There has been a lot of talk about intersectionalities lately. Let’s be clear, accessibility is not only about Disabled folk. It's also about race. Watching the documentary, The Recorder: Marion Stokes, I found myself as a white settler questioning who is left out of data-finding stories and that the process of searching, collecting, writing, collaborating and researching in the digital sphere (chaining, browsing, verifying) means that marginalized people, their way of knowing and how they experience the world are excluded. There is a whole database of Black women in physics and astronomy whose research and methods are rarely taught. We need to digitize and welcome everyone by providing access for everyone so we can all develop, analyse, reflect, evaluate, learn and communicate with one another.

It’s 2023, and it’s time to consider real inclusion. It’s time to showcase those who have been excluded. We need to see the brilliance of Black women in the arts, and Disabled people in the sciences. We need to digitize databases, artifacts and texts so that everyone can access them, learn and analyze them, be part of the dialogue and contribute to research.

Depends on what you mean by standard, depends on what you mean by unattractive, depends on what you care about or think regarding things like "dating/sex preferences"

I think there's SOME pressure, I think specifically about the genre of "white gay men want to literally murder fat queers" internet take. But it's honestly not very...powerful, or maybe influential is the better word? Like there are endless discussions, take your pick on whether they're good bad or ugly, about perceived gay male taste in style, size, race, etc. But it feels like a gap between online discussions versus the lived reality of the average gay man

There's also got to be some overlay with how gay men are told to be attracted to women. If you're dealing with that, I think it impacts your willingness to engage with other commentary on what you "should" be open to, good bad or ugly
