ON THE USA AND JAPAN TEAM MEDALS:
This will be a very brief post, since what I have to say on the topic is very short.
I'm so glad to see the USA and Japan receive their rightful team medals this week in Paris, since it's been a long two years coming. My only concern is that the Canadian appeal was dismissed just days before this was scheduled to happen. I think it's unfair in the first place to present medals when the Canadian team had an ongoing, unresolved appeal, as it would've been nice to have the whole podium presented together. I also feel that the event already being scheduled was among the reasons that the appeal was so quick to be dismissed. The Canadian team were not invited to Paris, and it seemed like everyone involved (CAS) wanted this whole situation over and done with, to brush under the rug as quickly as possible. If Canada won their appeal, the medal ceremony would either have to have been postponed, or another one would have to be scheduled at a time and place where the Canadians could be invited to hand them their medals. It was clear that CAS didn't really want it to drag on any longer, and swept aside the appeal despite there being genuine, plausible grounds for the reevaluation of the scores, since without Kamila's score, Canada should have moved to bronze as their female competitor should have moved up the table and been allocated more points. They also dismissed ROC's appeal though, so I can't confidently say that the result of the Canadian appeal was entirely due to CAS/RUS collusion/corruption. I think, on a larger scale, the scandal had shed such a negative light over the sport, and all the major bodies wanted that shadow gone as quickly as possible, regardless of whether the athletes involved were paid their dues and given the correct medals.
There's not much that can be done now, and the Russians were also not invited to Paris to receive bronze and likely won't ever receive those bronze medals the final results say they have (per CAS) as they continue to parade their athletes around the country as "Our true olympic champions". Russia, even if invited, will not accept bronze.
In short, I think this situation has boiled down to: "There is no 2022 Team bronze medal, and we will act accordingly."
Pretty disappointing but what more can we expect? I think many saw this a mile off when the CAS hearing took 2 years to be resolved.

Rika Kihira - Grand Prix Espoo 22 - Womens SP - JPN
Elements:
3S | 2Aeu3S | 3Lo | 3Lo2T | FSS4 | 3F | 2A2T | 3T | ChCoSp4 | ChSq | StSq3 | LS4
Program: Titanic
Gosh, it is seriously so refreshing to see, and I am so captivated by Rika’s clean skating, even more so than at SCI. Her comfort and ease in this program and with this ‘easier’ content really just brings you into her performance and makes you forget you’re even watching a competition. Seriously, just such a joy to watch. It was so tough to have a season without her last year, but seeing her thriving and setting herself up for a long, healthy career makes it all worthwhile.
And seriously, Women and Men across both disciplines need to take some serious notes on Rika’s performance, her program composition and her score. So many of the up-and-coming skaters would be soooo much more successful if they laid out CLEAN, attainable programs for themselves and focused on quality and confidence building. ESPECIALLY when coming off of major injuries or full seasons off of the competitive circuit.
I also still love this dress on her, and it is so lovely seeing Tracy at the boards with her 🥺
Score: 128.36, 192.43 into 1st
(Do y’all even understand how huge of a score that is with her current tech content? That’s 8 points away from 200 🤯😭👏🏻)

She is in love with watching you skate on the ice she is mesmerized by you
Loves your skating outfits so much
You guys met at Wisconsin when you accidentally delayed there practice
Going to college after winning the Olympics and being a normal person was all new for you. But the fact that the school had a skate rink, helped a ton. Right now you were skating across the ice, adding a turn or a jump every few steps. You didn’t notice when the gym door opened up and team of hockey players came in with the gear on ready to practice. The head coach Mark looks at you then back at the team “Wait one second I’ll ask her to get off the ice” he informs the girls. Lacey squeals grabbing KK’s arm “Holy shit that’s the Y/N Y/L she’s like a famous ice skater she got Olympic gold medals and all” she tells the girls shocked that you were in there rink right now.
You skate faster before doing three quads in a row landing them. You hear clapping and turn your head seeing a group of girls, you skate towards them and step out of the rink “I’m so sorry I didn’t know there was practice today” you apologize quickly. The coach nods at you and introduces himself “I’m Mark the coach it’s great to meet you I’ve heard a lot about you” he says. You smile “Thanks I’m Y/n” you say and Laila taps your shoulder “Your really talented you know” she says smiling ear to ear. You nod “Yeah I bet you guys are too” you smile.
Caroline thought you were the prettiest girl she has ever seen before “You looked really good on the ice it was beautiful” she compliments you. You turn your head to her and you look into her pretty blue eyes “Thank you, you have beautiful eyes” you say softly before coach motions for the girls to get on the ice. Caroline looks at coach then back at you “Here take my number I’m Caroline but you can call me KK” she tells you before grabbing your phone from your hand. You unlock it for her and she puts her number in before smiling at you and getting on the ice with her team, a blush covering her cheeks.
You wear her jerseys to all her games and she gets you the best seats every time you come to watch her
Caroline comes to all your competitions and practices just to watch you
She loves to skate with you when it’s just the two of you alone
You hold Caroline’s hands as you skate backwards pulling her along with you. She grabs your waist pulling you up in the air while she spins on the ice. You laugh “KK if you drop me I swear to god” you squeal as she spins you both faster before moving your legs to wrap around her waist. She hold you in her arms as she skates around you wrap your arms around her neck “Your so beautiful baby” she whispers one hand coming to pull your face closer to hers.
You rub your nose against hers “Yeah and you’re gorgeous” you tell her before pulling her lips against yours. She kisses back immediately and gently puts you back onto the ice before pulling away and grabbing your hand dragging you across the ice to skate with her, your hands interlocked. You let go and twirl around on the ice before smiling at her and grabbing her hand pulling her closer to you “Come on hot stuff show off for me” you beg. She smirks and starts skating way faster that you “Come on catch up with me baby” she says before you try to catch up but her being way to fast.
In love with doing your hair for you before competitions
She gets nervous when you have to practice or do a dangerous move
Always helps you when your injured or sore that goes both ways
Giving each others massages >>>
Forcing her to do Pilates with you
KK groans sitting back on the floor “I can’t do this my body is not flexible” she complains looking up at you. Rolling your eyes you bend down next to her “Come on it will be good for you now get your ass up and let’s go” you demand standing up and looking at her expectingly. She groans and stands up watching you “Okay so bend your knee into a lunge and bend your back backwards to grab your back foot” you tell her before doing exactly what you said.
She tried to copy your position before falling down “I quit I’m done” she says laughing sitting in her butt watching you do it by yourself. She flex’s her muscles in the mirror for you “See these you wish you had them this bullshit didn’t do that” KK says before sitting back leaning on her hands. You stop and look at her “You see this body you wish you had my waist” you wink. She shakes her head “No I love my big abs but I love looking at your body and feeling it” she grabbing you by the waist and pulling you on top of her. You laugh and move your hand to cup her cheek before kissing her, she kisses back and slides her tongue in your mouth. Laila walks into the gym and gags “NO NO NO GET A ROOM YOU FREAKS” she yells covering her eyes.
SHES SO PROTECTIVE OF YOU
she always finds a way to bring you up in conversations “My girlfriend is the best figure skater ever” “Oh Y/n yeah that’s my girl” “My girl is unreal on the ice you should watch her sometimes”
She tries to teach you hockey but it doesn’t always end up well
You look at KK holding the big hockey stick in your hand “I don’t think I can do it” you tell her honestly. She goes behind you and puts on hand above yours, enveloping yours “Just relax baby” she whispers moving you into a stance to hit the puck. You follow her lead and hit the puck and it flys across the ice before hitting the wall and coming back hitting you in the calve.
“Ow ow ow KK ow” you gasp, wincing holding your foot dropping the puck. Caroline picks you up bridle style trying not to laugh at you. You look up at her with a pout on your face “What’s so funny? I’m in real pain” you ask her while she carries you to the bench.
She lays you down and takes your skates off for you, she bites her lip to hide her laugh. Once the skates are off you kick her in the stomach “I asks what’s so funny?” you ask again. She laughs out loud “Your like impossible to play hockey with how do you get hurt doing nothing it’s hilarious” she laughs some more. You look at her dead faced with no emotion, so she grabs your waist brining you to sit on her lap. Caroline rubs your waist and kisses your head “I’m sorry baby it’s okay I love you sporty or not” she jokes. You roll your eyes and kiss her cheek “My calve really hurts tho” you say. She moves you on her lap to sit with your butt on the bench, your legs in her lap. She lifts your pants up and looks at the mark before rubbing it, you flinch “It’s gonna bruise I’m sorry mama” she says feeling bad that you got hurt and she was just joking about it. You shrug “It’s fine sweetheart I promise I love you” you say looking up at her.
You steal her jersey all the time
People say you guys are both iconic with how your both Olympics winners
THE TIKTOK EDITS GO CRAZY
She is in love and amazed on how flexible your body is *wink wink*
She calls you mama, baby, princess
You call her babe, sweetheart, baby
You guys have a good luck ritual where you tell each other I love you before a game or a competition

ON NATIONALITY SWITCHES, AND THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION:
Recently as of maybe a few months ago, we've seen two Russian athletes switch nationality in the span of 2 weeks. Sofya Samodelkina switches to Kazakhstan, and Sofya Titova switches to Armenia for the upcoming season.
Is this the first time we've seen Russian girls switch nationalities? No. Will it be the last? Definitely not. However, it is the first time that students of such a high profile coach (Evgeni Plushenko) and coaching team (Angels of Plushenko) have switched, and the first time that 2 have switched in such quick succession.
There have been rumours about Samo's switch since august of last year, so this isn't so surprising. She ranked 11th at RusNats, and was not a top skater at her time at CSKA, before she was kicked, so it makes sense for her to want to switch out. She was relatively competitive in the JGP back when Russia was still eligible for intl. starts, and was pretty decent on the junior circuit, including a silver medal at the 2021 Russian Junior Cup Final and Gold at the same event in 2020, along with some 4th place finishes at Russian juniors Nationals, 2 JGP medals (bronze at Rostelkom and 3rd in Slovenia) and a win at the 21-22 Denis Ten memorial.
When she graduated to Senior level, though, it just. Stagnated. We've known for a while that Russia's oversaturation alongside the biased judging makes it impossible for any up and coming talents to succeed, where the Eteri bonus holds so much weight. Samo finished 11th at both RusNats and the Russian GPF, and her only medals of the season came from her performances at the GP stages, where she came second at the 2nd stage Velvet Season, where her only competitors were Adeliya Petrosyan, Veronika Yametova, and a, at the time, struggling Alexandra Trusova who was fighting through injury and a lack of motivation. She then won the Volga Pirouette Stage, which again, her only competition at that event was Sasha, who wasn't landing any Ultra-C where Samo had a 3A.
All in all, her level of performance just was not enough to get her to that place of success she needed to be at, and with Russia's ban from intl. sport, it was only looking like it would get worse, despite her improvements from switching to AOP full time late last year. Samo, who had stated before that she wished Beijing would be postponed because she knew it was her only shot at going to the olympics, is grasping at straws to stay competitive, and it just so happened that her mother was born in Kazakhstan, making her eligible for citizenship by descent.
For her, I completely understand where this has come from. She will be an eligible senior when she returns to the international stage, and has the technical ability to blow people like Kaori Sakamoto and Loena Hendrickx out of the water. Is it worth is? 100%. She'll be able to get back out there, potentially stake her claim for some senior titles she wouldn't win under Russia, like National Championships and Four continents.
I think Kazakhstan would also be relatively grateful for the heightened exposure her fanbase would bring to the domestic Kazakh events, and hopefully she'd be able to contribute to building that domestic sport up by earning them places on the international start that they lost in womens ever since the departure of Elizabet Tursynbaeva. The problem here stems in that I feel Samo and other girls who defect to other federations will be in for a rude awakening when they don't get the inflated scores they were getting under the Russian flag, and that it may be harder for them to bridge the gap between them and skaters like Kaori and the Japanese who are so strong in their components.
Back when the season was in full swing, we saw how AOP athletes suffered from the underscoring in place of the Eteri girls getting inflated scores. We saw, in 22-23, Sasha's components drop and her STSQ and spins falling for lvl 4 to 3. Sofia Muravieva is a great example. Mura had the scores to best Kamila and Akatieva in the SP, but was rarely given them.
And so Plushenko made his ultimatum to the federation: Continue devaluing his athletes, continue to give them scores less than what they deserve, and they will jump ship, and compete for a federation that wants them. I found this interesting, because we all know Plushenko has quite the reputation for being loud mouthed, and a Patriot??? It made no sense that he would actively encourage his athletes to leave the Russian federation, and so I thought originally it was all hot air. This combined with that Samo's nationality switch had been whispered about BEFORE Plushenko even said anything.
And then Titova. She has no discernible ties to Armenia that I could find, so the switch seems odd. But again, she's not the most competitive, and in a world where the Russian juniors are arguably MORE competitive than their senior counterparts,,, its ruthless. If she wanted any chance at being competitive, she'd have to switch. The timing was smart, she's ineligible for seniors right now, but will be able to make a name for herself outside of Russia on the international stage having never competed outside RUS before, as an armenian skater, and can build up titles and respect in both division. Most people will be unaware she was even tied to RUSFED at any point. She has an abundance of time to wrack up titles and earn Armenia more placements.
My only concern is, is Russia prepared to lose more athletes? We've seen two in the space of 2 weeks defect, and all I can say is, will there be more? Will Plushenko encourage his juniors to look outside of Russia when they cannot compete with Eteri's students and Russian judging? And is Russia prepared to lose more and more athletes the longer they're banned from international sport?
Even from the perspective of Ice Dance, they had the departure of Smolkin/Davis to Georgia, using Eteri's Georgian Citizenship to justify Diana's switch in nationality, and her marriage to Gleb to cement it, and the pair of Karina Akopova/Nikita Rakmanin to Armenia.
In the world of Ice Dance, sure, this isn't a big loss, but Diana and Gleb abandoning Russia altogether and training in US/Canada could be foreshadowing, along with departures such as Samo and Titova, of the future of RUSFED and what this means for their development. The oversaturation and the blatant corruption is discouraging athletes, driving them away from not only the sport, but their country. And if the Federation doesn't make changes soon, they're in danger of seeing this worsen, and the potential for a collapse of this integral part of their sports economy, as more and more athletes decide to leave.
And the potential for success if they choose this route is already being proven. Sofya Samo had just within the last 2 weeks won the Summer Championships of Kazakhstan with a healthy 20 point margin between herself and second place Sofia Farafonova. And while Samo, on a clean slate will have to wait to build up her ranking to go to any major comps, she'll most likely be in the running for a national title by the end of 2024. Titova, likewise, will most likely be in the running for an Junior title in Armenia, and potentially a senior one if she is eligible.
Athletes are seeing the appeal in leaving for success in an easier climate, than sticking around to be mistreated by judges and beaten by 12 year olds with 3As and Quads. And RUSFED has tp recognise now, with so many departures over this last season, that they have a problem.
Now, do I necessarily think it's ethical to allow athletes to leave like this? If they have dual citizenship, sure. If not, and other countries are offering them citizenship to skate for them, then it becomes more tricky. I recognise the trouble that Ice dancers and Pairs face to find partners, but for singles, where the only benefit is to become more competitive, especially in a climate where the Russians are trying to outmaneuver a ban,,, especially when those athletes go on to still live and train in Russia and only visit the countries they compete in to well, compete, it becomes a lot harder to say whether its right or not. On one hand, those athletes have the ability to provide more opportunities for domestic athletes if they do well, but on the other hand, they're also taking opportunities from domestic athletes on principle, and for many domestic athletes who have worked hard, it will feel like a slap in the face to have a Russian athlete waltz in a snatch up all the titles they've worked for for years, under veryyy different conditions and with less resources.
And the ban, although many complain, must be upheld. (On that, though, I will talk more in depth in another post about my thoughts.)
All in all, the switches will be interesting to observe, and we'll see what happens as the season progresses, if any more athletes decide to make the decision to leave.

UGH MY QUEEN! I am so obsessed with Loena, and I can’t believe how much pop and power and presence she has on the ice with every move of her blade. This was so strong, and unless there are any calls in the review, there is no question she should go into 1st from GOE and sheer performance ability (even if the skating skills and tes are comparable).
Score: 74.88 into 1st Place

My hope for next season and leading into the Olympic season is that the ISU somehow revives womens skating cause yes it’s beautiful yes it’s lovely but is it exciting? Ehhhh.
In my personal opinion it’s the discipline that’s stagnated the most post Covid. You can argue that the crown goes to ice dance in that regard but even though the judging is shitty and the ISU insists on ridiculous themes for the rhythm dance we’re still getting quality and creativity through the bouts of corruption.
I just feel like women’s choreography has plateaued, it’s become uninteresting, very little memorable programs. Same elements same ordering same music like it’s becoming a by bland to watch. And my honest wish for the future is to reignite the spark it once had.
