“There is no single face in nature, because every eye that looks upon it, sees it from its own angle. So every man’s spice-box seasons his own food.”
— Zora Neale Hurston
Fantasy has always been on of my favorite genres -- the expansive, unlimited possibilities, a wealth of real world seeds to inspire magic, the infinite colors of scale, scope, and scene. Literally, playground for dreamy, wandering imaginations.
Even so, I had to learn to freely embrace what I really 'saw' when I was read stories, what my own mind envisioned, self-immersing in the wonderscape that books really just serve to inspire. The hesitancy came from the countless messages and corrections, questions, and criticisms I heard received about where, how, and why my imagination was should unleash because I didn't look much like the usual protagonists.
The irony being obvious -- that schema is pure point opposite the genre.
The world of romantafantasy is so gloriously vast now. No limits on references, representations, and gods blessed published and fanfic writers. Somewhere along the quest I landed in that garden soft bed of luxury, and it was a whole wrap. All the inspirations living rent free in my mind while reading anything that wasn't 'coded' for audiences who were not European, thin, hetero -- well, they're quite beautiful in flight. My Prythian imagination is a sprawling symphony of cultures, colors, and kinds.
We make the space for our natures, and relish in their worlds, freely. Dreamers don't take permission, because Feyre Darling, you bow to nothing and no one but your crown.
A minor manifesto I guess @>- ^_^ <3

AAAA I WAS SO TIRED LAST NIGHT I FORGOR TO MAKE A POST LMAO
but here's what happened yesterday!!!!!! uhh i went to philly with a buddy to go to this funky place called wonderscapes!!!!!
it's like an art place but with such weirdcore exhibits like. there was a god damn piano but with people's voices as the notes huhhhhh
but my favorite one i saw was a wall filled with little rolled up papers colored red on one side and people wrote on them. some of the messages were either encouraging, heartfelt messages or people's last words. like. let that sink in. that's fucking crazy to think about.
but anyway i wrote in one so!!!!!!!! that's my rant for today :P

Hi! Do you have some books you've read recently and liked enough to recommend (fiction or not, doesn't matter) ? I've been in a reader's block lately. I can't seem to find a book I can concentrate on.
anon, i'm so sorry i never saw this! (and that i was sorta MIA for a while)
so okay: what to do about reader's block.
i'm going to get to some recs for you in a moment but one of the first things i recommend doing and something that usually knocks me out of a reading slump just about every time is to re-read a fave.
you know the characters, you know the story, you know the language, and you love all of it. let yourself fall back into the world again.
but in case you want to read something new to you instead, here's some books i've read (not necessarily recently but most are recent reads) that i loved:
the house in the cerulean sea by tj klune. modern fantasy. tons of found family feels. i'm actually in love with this book.
the sculptor by scott mccloud, graphic novel. a chonk of a book, but a quick read. not the easiest book to read but man was it good.
the good thieves by katherine rundell. middle grade historical. gorgeous language, set in 1920s new york city. the explorer by the same author is also good.
letters to the lost by brigid kemmerer. young adult contemporary. some difficult subject matter with grief and loss but really nicely done.
hollowpox: the hunt for morrigan crow by jessica townsend. middle grade fantasy series. book 3 in the series, but this whole series is awesome. highly recommended.
wonderscape by jennifer bell. middle grade sci-fi. really really fun story about three kids who get pulled into a game of the future.
six wakes by mur lafferty. sci-fi. a clone wakes up to discover she's died recently - and she's not the only one.
the woman they could not silence by kate moore. history, biography. about a woman who was put into an institution by her husband for having the temerity to speak her mind and her fight to get out and reform the sanitariums in the us. this author also wrote radium girls.
moxie by jennifer mathieu. young adult contemporary. about standing up and fighting for yourself and for others who can't fight for themselves. wish this book had been around when i was in high school.
the midnight library by matt haig. contemporary fantasy. one of my new faves. just gorgeous. haig always does really well with mental illness, which makes sense considering his background.
the weed that strings the hangman's bag by alan bradley. mystery series. one of the books in the flavia de luce mysteries. i don't love most mysteries, but i adore flavia. she's such an odd duck, and a singular character.
the curse of the boyfriend sweater by alanna okun. essays. these are essays on crafting and how they relate to the author's life and reading them made me feel like a friend was telling me stories.
i hope you get out of your slump soon anon, and i hope you find something on this list you can fall in love with.
#booklr#book recs#long post#if anyone is interested i can do a lifetime recs list of my all-time faves
