Thoughts on Solo Leveling Episode 19: The 10th S-Rank Hunter

The seventh episode of season 2 was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING XDXDXDXD Spoilery thoughts for the anime, novel, and manhwa prior to Ragnarok below:

For folks who are curious about Lee Minsung, the novel and manhwa go a little more into the stuff he does. There's a character who's been kind of erased from the anime (and partially from the manhwa), Yoo Suhyun, who's Yoo Jinho's (and Yoo Jinsung's) cousin, as well as the niece of Yoo Myunghan (Jinho's father), through Myunghan's brother, Yoo Seokho. Suhyun has a larger presence in the novel (and manhwa), and she's basically Jinho's closest friend outside Jinwoo, and one of Jinho's main allies. She works as an actress. She narrates a bit about Minsung, and how he's known as a creep in the industry.

During Sung Jinwoo's "re-evalulation"/continued evaluation, Minsung continues the press conference (Yen Press/Ize Press English translation Volume 3, Chapter 7: The Tenth S-Rank Hunter), and thinks about how his joining Reapers to convince people he's here to help people is for money and to wash away controversies about “his father pulling strings to get him out of the mandatory Korean military service.” (It's also referenced in the manhwa, in the Ize Press English release, Volume 5, Chapter 13, but minus the bit about Minsung's father, Lee Wonkyu, vice-president of Yoojin Construction... Jinho's father's company, who helps sponsor the Monitoring Association; that's brought up later, when Minsung talks to Woo Jinchul, but not specifically in re: the military service).

Anyway, what we're really here for is Baek Yoonho and Choi Jongin flirting and both being thirsty for Sung Jinwoo.

What am I meant to do with this aldkjalj Jongin alkdjlaj you are so thirsty for Jinwoo alkdjalj Anime, thank you for feeding my ship, bless.

Jongin and Yoonho's banter is very cute as ever. I do want to caveat that this is how Yoonho describes his goal of getting Jinwoo in the novel:

“Yoonho didn’t back down. He leaned in close enough to Jongin that their foreheads touched. “We lost some of our members. Shouldn’t we get him as compensation to fill out our ranks?”

Compensation. Yoonho so thirsty for Jinwoo. Everyone so thirsty for him. I'm sad the line was cut/modified/whatever happened. It's lovely. (It's kept in the manhwa, though, tragically, Jongin and Yoonho don't brush foreheads there; Ize Press English release, Volume 5, Chapter 13).

It's an interesting change to have Go Gunhee be against the idea of the press conference (at least at this time). That's not how it is in the novel/manhwa. Not that important, it's just a change. Also, Jinchul's interaction with Minsung is funnier in the novel and the manhwa (much more threatening). I imagine they cut it short for time/no one cares about Minsung (probably also why he disappears entirely when Jinwoo comes out of the building).

They're so cute. I just like the way Jongin is drawn in this bit.

I just love how Igris is always at Jinwoo's side. (Iron is also here, but he's not important, sorry Iron). Igris best boi.

I need to caveat that in the novel, Jongin has this comment to Yoonho while Jinwoo is trapped by the reporters:

[Jongin]: “It looks like my new hunter is having a hard time thanks to all this attention.” [Yoonho]: “Who says Hunter Sung is your new hunter?” [Jongin]: “It’s a joke. Can’t you take a joke?”

Jongin then suggests that he and Yoonho team up for a threesome in order to keep rivals from grabbing Jinwoo and to talk with him in private. And to escort Jinwoo home. It's actually Jongin's idea. And Jongin follows up Yoonho's offer to take Jinwoo home,

“Jongin joined in. “Yes, come with us, please. We have something we’d like to discuss with you on the way.”

AND THEN...

Just the way this is rephrased from how it is in the manhwa and his expression and just... SO THIRSTY FOR JINWOO alkdjaldjalj The Jinwoo thirstification of Jongin in adaptations and especially the anime is my everything.

There's also some cute shippy stuff with Yoonho and Jongin that is sadly cut out of the anime (but that is in the novel if you want to check it out).

Another minor change: Jinwoo does actually get the Orb of Avarice checked out at the auction in the novel and the manhwa. Here he doesn't. Probably time saver. Cute we get to see him actually, I imagine, going to the bathroom to get weapons to sell so he can buy his fireproof gear (in the novel, he just takes out a loan). This is mostly relevant in that even the auctioneer looking at the orb ships them (kinda):

“Even in Korea, Jongin Choi, the mage hunter also known as the Ultimate Hunter, was said to be searching for a magic amplification sphere that provided a buff of over 50 percent. And along came a brand-new S-rank hunter with a magic sphere that could amplify magic by 100 percent?”

Another novel addition to Yoonho's speculation that's been completely axed in the anime: earlier in the novel in particular, Jinwoo takes an interest in investigating video game mechanics and how they might apply to his situation with the system, so he can better manage things. He makes a forum post about it, which comes to nothing. Yoonho, after the failed attempt to recruit Jinwoo, finds it. Also, Yoonho literally "moans" in jealousy over Jinwoo's leveling up. I didn't make that up:

“What if a hunter who can increase his power actually exists? Moreover, what if that growth occurred so quickly that he’d gone from an E rank to an S rank in several months? “……” A moan spilled out from Yoonho’s mouth. He got chills just thinking about it.”

A more interesting anime change: Jinwoo doesn't kick Jinho out. In the novel and manhwa, Jinho gets a motel (well Jinwoo puts him in a motel, anyway). I think this is nice! They're friends and coworkers, and Jinwoo gives him a place to sleep. That's really sweet :3 Husband has a spot :3

I also really love how Jinwoo gives all the people he cares about shadow bodyguards.

And we have giant "Tusk" (Fang) and a bit of Esil tease! She looks good!

Overall, great episode :D Looking forward to the next!
