You didn't have the heart to tell him. The jumpers material made your skin itch and the design that had been knitted to the front was ghastly. But you just didn't have the heart to tell him.

And it was that exact reason that led you to wear it during your latest visit to the bookshop.

Aziraphale had many love languages. In fact, you're fairly certain that he is the only being you've ever met that practices all of them. Yet some he still displayed more than others and gift-giving was certainly one of them. So, when he'd gifted you with a jumper of questionable design to help you wrap up warm for the winter how could you have possibly said no?

He seemed so excited, having watched intently for your reaction and lighting up like a Christmas tree when you slightly bent the truth and told him you loved it. You didn't think you could survive seeing the disappointment that would surely etch itself across his expression if you were honest. You'd swallow your pride and wear the god awful thing if only to make your angel happy.

As you stepped out of the cab that had dropped you to the shop, you spotted the all too familiar Bentley pull up a few feet away, the nearby street lights bouncing off its sleek paint job. A groan of frustration crept past your lips. If anyone was going to find joy in teasing you relentlessly for your current attire it was Crowley.

You watched as he stepped out of the drivers side and your warning to 'not say a word' died on your tongue. He wore a sweater that rivalled yours in hideousness. A snake was knitted to the front, winding the entire way around Crowley's side and up his back, the head reappearing on his shoulder. The whole thing was completed with googly eyes. The snake's forked tongue poked out in a comedically cartoonish fashion.

Crowley spared a single, tired glance down at your own monstrosity of a jumper. “You too?”

You nodded with a sigh, not missing the look Crowley threw you once he'd realised how utterly ridiculous you both looked.

“I think we can both agree that this is a lot less embarrassing when you remember we're doing this for Azira's sake,” you said plainly.

“Of course,” Crowley agreed, doing everything in his power to maintain some shred of dignity. “It's romantic really, when you think about it.”

You both took a moment to get into character, preparing to act as though you adored your current outfits before you entered the bookshop. The bell that sat above the door sounded as you both stepped inside.

“I'm terribly sorry but I'm afraid we're quite closed– oh!” Aziraphale's words fell short as he found both you and Crowley, both of you looking as though you were straight out of a poorly budgeted Christmas flick. “My dears, what a lovely surprise!”

The angels smile only widened at the sight of what you were wearing. “You both look wonderful!”

He laid a gentle hand on either of your cheeks as he continued to shower you both in compliments. Suddenly wearing the horrid jumpers didn't seem so bad if this was the outcome.

“We love them, Azira,” you lied.

“Yep, love them! I haven't taken mine off since you gave it to me.” Crowley joined in on your efforts to sell the lie. And by the way the angel's eyes brightened at your words you assumed you were successful.

“I'm so glad to hear it, I just knew you'd like them. That's precisely why I bought more!”

“You what...”

Confusion, realisation and then utter fear chased each other across your expression as Aziraphale opened a nearby cupboard and produced two more folded piles of woollen Christmas jumpers.

You and Crowley shared a horrified look as the bundle of clothes were handed to you. You tried to be optimistic but something, namely the googly-eyed reindeer knitted to the jumper at the top of your pile, told you that these wouldn't be any better than the monstrosity you were currently wearing.

You fought against the look of disdain that had subconsciously begun to settle on your face. You mustered your best smile as you thanked him for his thoughtfulness.

“Really angel, you're too good to us,” Crowley chimed in, grimacing slightly. He evidently felt bad about lying to his beloved.

“Oh, don't mention it, my dear boy. You look so very dashing in them after all.” Aziraphale said lovingly. His hand gently fell against your shoulder. “The both of you.”

And just like that, you were reminded why you were going through all this trouble. Why you were lying directly to your angel's face. The sight of him so happy filled you with so much joy it rivalled the burning embarrassment you felt each second you spent wearing the ridiculous garments. It was entirely worth it if it meant you got to see your angel smile. And now that he was offering you more with a smile brighter than ever, well, how could you possibly refuse?

CHAPTER ONE- EINSTEIN

November 1993

Mulder watched Ellen Reardon tear the photograph with steady hands and coolly discard eight year old Cindy’s image into the fire. The glossy coating bubbled as the paper twisted and melted amidst the searing flames. To his left, he saw Scully take a deep breath, heard her swallow hard. Neither of them said anything beyond the necessary pleasantries, making their excuses as they awkwardly vacated the Reardon household for the final time.

Scully carefully navigated the steps down from the porch and cut across the lawn with a slow, defeated gait. Mulder headed to the driver side door without discussion.

He broke the silence as they headed towards the airport.

“She seemed awfully quick to dismiss the daughter she loved and raised for eight years, don’t you think?”

Scully dragged her eyes away from the hundred yard stare that had heretofore been aimed out of the passenger window, her elbow neatly tucked onto the door ledge. She turned her face towards him, thoughtfully slow, her pouted lips peeling away from the forefinger that had been pressed against them. She sighed and shrugged.

“Grief can manifest in a lot of different ways, Mulder. She’s still processing everything. She just found out her own child murdered her husband. We don’t know what she’s feeling.”

Mulder nodded regretfully. Scully returned her gaze to the passing view, crooking her finger beneath her nose now. The pout returned. Mulder knew this meant she was mulling something over.

“You ever think about having kids, Mulder?”

This was so unexpected he laughed. Not a loud laugh but an airy, shocked chuff. He did a double take to check whether or not she was serious. She turned to consider him again, her face calm, her eyes steady. She was serious. His cheeks rounded as he attempted to form a response.

“No, I can’t say I have ever thought about it, Scully. To be honest I don’t even know if I could keep a pet alive. I think it helps to pass that test first before you consider being responsible for other humans.”

They drove the rest of the way to the airport without speaking. It didn’t even occur to him to ask if she ever thought about the subject herself.

December, 1993

Mulder surreptitiously watched Scully slide the last of her papers into her briefcase and clip it shut. She lifted her winter coat over her shoulders, letting it hang open over her skirt suit as he busied himself peering at a set of negatives through a loupe.

“You going to be at home in a couple hours Mulder? I wanted to swing by. I, ah, I have a little something for you.”

He looked up from his light box with some surprise.

“A gift? For me?”

“Yeah,” Scully answered, letting out a shallow breath, her eyes darting off to the side, her chin tilting up. She fingered a coat button at her waist.

“A couple hours? Better give me three,” Mulder hedged, thinking of the places that might possibly be open past five p.m. on a Thursday night two days before Christmas, and where he could buy a suitable festive offering for Scully.

Some time later, he’d just finished hastily wrapping the best thing he’d been able to find at such short notice when he heard a soft knock at his apartment door. He tugged it open, still holding the scissors in one hand. Scully stood in the hallway with her arms behind her back and a slightly self-conscious look on her face.

“Come on in,” he motioned to her. “This is all very mysterious.”

Scully quirked a playful eyebrow at him as she stepped inside, crab-walking into the living room with her back turned away from him to keep the contents of her hands concealed.

“I didn’t wrap it,” she said, apologetically. She stood still, hesitating.

“That’s okay, Scully, I’ll let you make it up to me somehow.”

She stared at him for a few seconds then shook her head a little, seeming to remember why she had come. She pulled her right hand out from behind her hip and presented him with an empty glass bowl. He nodded in thanks, but couldn’t conceal the confusion that played across his brow.

“And, ah, this,” she added, producing a clear plastic bag filled with water, clutched in her left fist. In the center of the turgid offering floated a bright orange goldfish; its tail twitching from side to side, its mouth lazily bobbing open and shut. He took it and lifted it up to better catch the light.

“Carnival in town?” he joked, grinning. “How many targets did you have to shoot down to win this for me, Scully? Isn’t it cheating if you have a firearms certificate?”

She smiled back.

“It’s so you can practice keeping something alive. Pass your test before you consider any…. further responsibilities.”

Was she blushing, he wondered? He couldn’t properly tell because she hid her face from his peering gaze almost immediately, looking down as she reached into her overcoat pockets. She lifted out some fish flakes, a bag of brightly colored pebbles, and a slim paperback entitled Practical Fishkeeping: A Beginner’s Guide .

She rested the last of his gifts down on the coffee table and looked up at him with an awkward, tight little smirk. He stood there balancing the fish and the bowl, just holding her gaze and smiling. She blinked and looked down at the empty glass orb, suddenly reaching out to take it back.

“Let me fill this up for you,” she offered, swiftly walking off through the dining room and into the kitchen. He followed.

At the sink, she placed the bowl down and turned on the cold water. She motioned for him to come closer.

“The guy at the pet store said you’re supposed to half fill it with new water, and the other half with the water from the bag. But you should let this get to room temperature first, then float the baggie in it for a while before making the transfer.”

Scully shut off the faucet and lifted the bowl from the sink, the water gently swishing from side to side. She slid it towards the back of the kitchen counter, next to the knife block, and reached out to take the bag from Mulder’s grip, gently placing it where the bowl had just been sitting. She reached up to tear some paper towels off the roll that was suspended under the cupboards, wiping up a few drops that had escaped, then padded the damp sheets together and turned to toss them into the trash can.

Mulder watched this whole domestic performance with quiet awe. The way Scully moved about his kitchen with ease, confidently knowing where things belonged and happy to take charge of them, pleased him greatly. It made him feel more at home than he’d ever felt while alone in his own space.

He realized he was staring at her. Scully took a deep breath and looked away, her eyes skipping past him into the next room, drawn to the lumpy package sitting on the dining table. It was gift-wrapped in cheap, gaudy paper featuring snowmen dancing pas de deux with eerily satanic elves: the only roll they’d had left at the gas station where he’d stopped in desperation.

“Is that for me?” she queried, gently.

“Oh, yeah,” he confirmed, dashing over to pick it up. He held it out for her to take, and she thanked him as she did, tucking it under her arm.

“You’re not going to open it?” he asked.

“It’s not Christmas yet, Mulder,” she said, teasingly. “I’ll take it to my parents’ house and put it under the tree to open Christmas morning.”

“But I opened mine,” he countered. His mind flashed to the image of Scully unwrapping his gift in front of her parents and siblings before Christmas Day Mass. It was a wall mounted key rack topped by a cat figurine with beady little humanoid eyes banded across its face. He'd panic-bought it at the gas station car wash gift shop. Women liked cats, right? He cringed, second-guessing his hasty decision, but it was too late now.

“It’s a fish, Mulder. I couldn’t wrap a fish.”

“Okay,” he relented, regretfully. Scully’s family were going to think he was such an ass.

“Anyway, I should get going,” she said with a sigh. “My sister just told me my little brother announced he’s not coming home for the holidays. She’s working on him but I gotta call my mom and talk her off a ledge just in case.”

He nodded. Began walking her to the door. As he pulled it open for her he reached out two fingers and a thumb, gently tugging at the sleeve of her coat. She hadn’t even taken it off. She looked back at him.

“Thanks for the gift, Scully. It’ll be nice to have some company at home as well as in the office now.”

Scully smiled shyly, stepping into the hallway.

They both looked up at the sound of the elevator doors opening at the other end of the hallway. Three men stepped out and approached the apartment directly opposite Mulder’s.

Number forty-five. It had been unoccupied for weeks.

They made for an odd trio: Mulder’s balding African American building manager in a folksy blue checked shirt, starting up what sounded like sales patter as he fiddled with the lock; a tall, white, clean shaven formal type with a vaguely unnerved expression, a fussy silk tie and nary a hair out of place, and a cherubic Asian American man whose only facial definition was provided by a thin line of beard along his jawline, dressed down in a chunky woollen sweater and cargo pants. The latter two waited patiently as the key proved sticky and awkward to turn, the super rattling the handle with some frustration. They turned their faces in languid unison to return Mulder and Scully’s curious gazes.

The taller man nodded upwards briefly in greeting, his silvered coif catching the light from the overhead bulbs. First Mulder, then Scully, returned the gesture with polite smiles and nods of their own, and the shorter man grinned, the rounded apples of his cheeks shining as he tilted his head downwards, looking directly at Mulder for a few seconds through notably long eyelashes.

The super got the door open, disappearing inside as he announced that the unit was available immediately, but fussy tie and chunky sweater lingered for a moment in the hallway, their eyes roaming over the length of Scully. Or Mulder. Or perhaps both. After a few seconds, the taller man, the one with the greying hair, softly reached for the elbow of his companion, looping his arm around the crook of it and tugging him through the open door, leading the way.

Just before he vanished from sight, the younger man lifted his hand and fluttered his fingers in their direction, mouthing but not verbalizing a quick, flirtatious “’bye.”

Mulder and Scully looked at one another in amused bewilderment. Scully raised her eyebrows and tilted her chin.

“New neighbors, huh?” Her eyes sparkled momentarily.

Mulder nodded, commenting, “Guess so,” while emitting a breathy chuckle.

They moved on.

She shoved her hands deep into her pockets, her left elbow squeezing her present against her ribs. “Okay, well, you should avoid feeding the fish for the first twenty-four hours while it settles in. And keep the lights dim.”

“Aye-aye, Captain,” he grinned.

Scully looked at him a bit playfully. “So… are you gonna give it a name?”

The thought hadn’t crossed his mind. He felt a bit put on the spot. “Well, I don’t know Scully,” he hedged. “I’ll have to give it some consideration. Naming is a very important part of the pet keeping process.”

Scully’s eyes danced with the matching grin she was only half suppressing. After a beat, she spoke. “You can do it, Mulder, I believe in you.”

He bowed his head in gratitude, his hand gliding down the edge of the door.

Scully allowed herself to give him a satisfied smile, then turned on one heel and swept down the hall. At the elevator, she pushed the button before turning back.

“Merry Christmas, Mulder,” she offered, with a shy smile.

“Merry Christmas, Scully,” he said in a low voice, leaning into the doorframe.

Well past midnight, Mulder reached the final page of the fishkeeping manual and closed the book. He reached over and placed it on the coffee table, turning onto his side ready for sleep. He lifted his head one last time, watching the little orange molly now happily exploring the confines of its bowl on top of the chest of drawers in the apartment entryway.

“Hey, Einstein,” he murmured into the gloom. “What do you say we get you a partner?”

The fire flickered on the other side of the room, illuminating the area and filling their bodies with warmth. Will wrapped his arm around Nico, pulling him closer so that their bodies were just touching. They had just gotten back from doing all their Christmas shopping - which really wasn't too difficult, since all they needed was a few presents for friends and for Will's family. It couldn't have taken more that two hours. Still, it had been snowing the whole time, and the two were slowly starting to freeze to death. But as they shared warmth with one another, it surely wouldn't take long for them to return to their usual selves.

"Hey, Neeks," Will began, breaking the comfortable silence, "can I talk to you about something?"

Nico glanced up at him, slightly skeptical. Was it something bad? Would it be something that he wanted to hear? What was Will planning? Despite these thoughts, he somehow found himself saying, "Yeah, sure."

"My dad wanted me to spend Christmas back home," he announced.

Nico nodded. "Okay." That wasn't that bad. He could deal with that.

"And, like, I know that you're not going to your dad's," he continued.

"Yeah..."

"So, my dad said I could bring you round with me, if you wanted to come?"

Or maybe it was that bad. Maybe he couldn't deal with that. They'd been in a relationship for over a year now, but Nico still hadn't actually met Will's family, and he hadn't exactly been looking forward to it. What if they didn't like him? What if they found him too weird? What if they didn't approve of his relationship with Will? What would they even think of him?

"You don't have to, if you don't to, of course," Will reassured him, "but it would be nice, y'know?"

From what Nico had heard though, Will's family was nice. He had a lot of siblings, and as far as Nico knew only Will's dad lived there. Plus, he could have sworn that Will had mentioned at some point that his dad was bisexual, so he probably wouldn't have any problem with Nico. Perhaps a visit could be fun.

"I'll come," Nico said, before he could change his mind. "I mean, it's probably about time that I met your family."

Will grinned. "Thanks, Neeks!" He pulled him into a tight hug, circling his hand around Nico's back, and planted a kiss on his forehead.

A young girl came running up to Will as soon as the two stepped through the door, reaching out her arms for a hug. Will laughed and reached his arms out too, picking the girl up so that he held her at eye level. She kissed his cheek.

"Hi Will!" the child greeted. "Who's the dude behind you?"

Nico had been standing awkwardly by the wall as this exchange carried out, until the girl looked directly at him. He quickly shot her a smile, unsure of how else to react. He had never really understood how to deal with children.

"This is Nico," Will introduced.

The girl grinned. "Is he your husband?"

Will laughed. "Not yet."

"Will he be your husband?" she asked.

"Maybe one day," Will said, before giving her a quick kiss on the forehead and putting her back down. "Where's Dad?" 

"In the kitchen!" the girl announced. She took one more look at Will, then smiled at Nico, then turned around and ran away, deeper into the house.

"That was my little sister," Will explained. "Lucy." He took Nico's hand, and began to walk in the same direction as Lucy. Nico walked alongside him.

When the two arrived in the kitchen, Nico's first thought was just how much Will looked like his dad. They had that same sun-kissed skin, curly golden blonde hair, and eyes that seemed to hold the entire sky. His dad stood by the oven, presumably getting dinner ready for tomorrow. Since it hadn't been eleven until Will and Nico had arrived after the long journey, they assumed it would be too late to have dinner on that night. Besides, they had already stopped off for something to eat at a service station on the way.

"Son! Merry Christmas!" Will's dad exclaimed, approaching the pair. He gave Will a hug, patting him on the back, before pulling away and looking at Nico. "And this must be your boyfriend, right?"

"Nico di Angelo," Nico introduced, holding out his hand to shake. "And, yeah, I'm Will's... boyfriend." Instead of taking his hand in return, Will's dad pulled Nico into a hug as well, which he didn't protest against. Now Nico knew where Will got his talent of good hugs from. "It's very nice to meet you, Mr Solace."

"Please, call me Apollo, or 'Dad', if you want."

Nico tried his hardest not to blush. "Uh, okay, sure."

"Stop teasing him, Dad," Will said, pulling Nico towards him. The familiar heat from Will's hand on his arm was comforting. "Thank you for inviting us, though."

"You’re my son, Will, you don't need to thank me for inviting you to your own home," Apollo replied.

"Thanks for inviting me, then," Nico chimed in.

Apollo just smiled. "Well, you boys should probably get up to bed, you've got a big day tomorrow." He glanced over at Lucy, who was stood in the corner. "Will, can you take Lucy up to bed, as well?"

"Sure, Dad."

Will let go of Nico's arm and made his way over to Lucy, picking her up again. He made his way out of the kitchen and up the stairs, with Nico following closely behind. Before they reached Will's old room, they turned into Lucy's room, which held a few beds, one of which was empty. Nico assumed that the rest of the children sleeping in here were Will's other siblings. He watched Will go over and put Lucy into her bed, tucking her in and giving her a goodnights kiss, and couldn't help but smile.

The two left the room, and Nico followed Will into his old room. A double bed sat in the centre of the room, with light blue sheets and matching pillows. Fairy lights strung from the ceiling illuminated the room in a faint glow, making the various movie posters just visible on the painted yellow walls. Will smiled as he looked around at all the memories, and whispered, "It's exactly how I left it."

Five minutes later, they had gotten changed and were tucked into bed, their bodies intertwined. It didn't take long for them to fall into a peaceful sleep.

The next morning, Will and Nico found a spot on the sofa whilst his younger siblings opened their presents. Nico had already given Will his present as soon as they had woken up - a Christmas sweater with the words 'You Are My Sunshine', and an image of the sun with a woollen hat, scarf, and snow falling all around, which Will had immediately put on.

"Will!" a girl shouted, running up to him. It was the girl that Nico had met the night before - Lucy. "Will, I got a paper cut opening a present." She held out her finger, displaying the tiniest cut, but Will didn't seem to acknowledge how insignificant it probably was. Nico's supposed that, to the child at least, it was significant - the small tears in the corners of her eyes was enough to prove that.

"Oh no!" Will cried, gently holding her finger. "Don't worry, Lucy. I know how to make it better." He produced a small plaster from his pocket, with a snowflake pattern running down it, and wrapped it around the wound. "There, you're okay now." His voice was soft and calming, and watching the scene made Nico fall in love all over again.

Lucy smiled, and wiped away her tears with her other hand. "Thank you, Will." She returned to opening her presents.

"Why didn't you tell me that you're so good with kids?" Nico wondered, looking up at Will with admiration.

Will just laughed. "I guess it just never came up."

The two continued to watch the children, until all the presents had been unwrapped and the two were left in the room alone as Apollo returned to the kitchen to continue preparations for dinner and the kids went to play in another room. Nico looked over to the tree, spotting something that shouldn't have been there.

"Wait, there's still a present left," he said, standing up and making his way over. It a small box, wrapped in a silver wrapping paper covered in green Christmas trees, different to the red wrapping paper covered in various cartoony characters that the rest of the presents had been wrapped in. He picked it up, turning it around in his hand.

"That one's for you," Will said. "From me."

Nico looked Will directly in the eye, and smiled. His gaze then returned to the present and he began to carefully open it, revealing another small, black box.

"Open it, then," Will invited.

Taking a deep breath, Nico took the lid off the box, and stared down at the shimmering diamond ring.

"Nico di Angelo," Will began, standing up and taking Nico's hand, "will you marry me?"

Nico stared down at the ring, holding back tears, and then up at Will, giving him the biggest smile ever. “William Solace, you don’t even need to ask.”

Settle Down With Me, Part One

Y’alright folks? Long time no see, how’re you getting on? Excited for Christmas (if you celebrate it)? 

So I received a request to write an imagine based on the song ‘Kiss Me’ by Ed Sheeran, and was hit by a wave of inspiration, so wrote this. It’s going to be a mini series, with probably four parts (if you saw my earlier post that said three, I changed my mind). So thanks to the anon for the request, and I hope you all like it!

Part Two

You stopped, took a deep breath, and knocked on the door. The sounds rang harsh and hollow, and an eternity of silence seemed to follow it.

“Come in!” came a familiar voice from the other side, muffled but cheerful.

You opened the door to a conference room with a large table in the middle, stretching across the room, and a hive of people sat around it, with only a few empty seats scattered about. Some were chatting in hushed voices, some looked up at you as you entered, others scribbled absentmindedly on their notepads. You searched for your godfather’s face amidst the crowd, and quickly located him at the head of the table. Emma was sat to his right, and she smiled warmly at you as you met her eyes. She wasn’t technically your godmother, but you knew it wasn’t Chris who remembered to buy you a birthday card every year. You hurried towards them as Chris beckoned you over. You went to him first, acutely aware of all the eyes fixed on you. When you reached him you stood awkwardly, unsure how to greet him. You would usually go in for a hug, but this was a professional setting. You didn’t know if you were allowed to tell people that the director of the project they were all here for, one of the most renowned and talented film directors of your time, was your godfather, and he’d got you a job on the film – or even if you wanted people to know.

But he took the decision out of your hands when he stood and wrapped you in a big hug, like he had been doing since you could remember.

“Don’t be nervous,” he whispered, “Today is just about getting to know each other and setting out our vision for the film. It’ll be really casual.”

You nodded, a little shaky, before moving into Emma’s open embrace. She didn’t say anything, but held onto your hands as she pulled away and gave them a squeeze, rendering words redundant. You gave a small smile, then left to take your seat further down the table.

The producers sat closest to Chris on the one side of the table, and actors on the other, with the various departmental directors filling in further down. In your best attempt at a purposeful walk, you made you way down the room, trying not to stare at the famous faces along the way. Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Harry bloody Styles…

You found two empty seats together and sat in the further one, hoping no one would sit next to you. The last few people filtered in and you sighed in relief as the seat remained empty.

Chris broke the relative silence by standing and announcing, “Well, we’re still waiting for Jack but I think we’d best get started without him.”

Nods of approval and the shuffling of papers signified general agreement, but just as Chris made to start the meeting, the door burst open.

 In the doorway stood a tall, slightly dishevelled-looking blonde. He wore a dark grey, woollen jacket, unbuttoned to reveal a navy-blue sweater, with a dark green tartan scarf hung loosely around his neck. He was undoubtedly stylish, but far more striking was his face. Despite his angular features, he looked soft and boyish. His hair was already fairly long, but you could see that it would go curly if it grew a little longer. He smiled sheepishly through light panting, exposing deep dimples in each cheek, and his vibrant blues eyes darted around the room. He was easily the most handsome man you had ever seen, even against the wealth of good looks that sat around that very table.

You swallowed a gasp.

“Mornin’ all, how ye daein? Sorry I’m late, the traffic this morn’ was summin’ fierce.”

Good God, he’s Scottish.

The smile in his voice rang around the room and vibrated in your chest.

This is not good. This is very not good.

“Not to worry, Jack, we’re only just starting,” Chris replied and indicated for him to sit.

You watched, fixated, as he scanned the room for a seat. He caught your gaze and grinned, prompting you to snatch your eyes away and fight the blush that threatened to creep up your neck, with questionable success. You kept your eyes trained on the pad of paper on the table in front of you, but listened as he walked around the table and sat down in the empty seat next to you. You risked a glance at him, only to find he was already looking at you. The curiosity painted on his features morphed into a smirk, and he winked at you.

Bollocks.

 You spent the meeting doing your best to concentrate on what Chris was saying, ignore the man beside you, and supress the groans of frustration that rumbled in your throat at his every movement. The vaguely sweaty musk carried across the inches between you, which was hopelessly distracting. Why does he smell so good? He fidgeted often, scratching his arm or chin, shifting in his seat, crossing and uncrossing his legs, and every time he did your mind wandered to him and his perfectly chiselled face. In the end, you had to focus so hard on concentrating that you basically wrote down every word of Chris’ brief. You had never been more relieved than when a break was announced and you could get up and get some refreshments.

 You pushed your chair out to head towards a table laid out at the back, and as you stood you saw that his scarf had fallen off the back of his chair. You picked it up, and as you straightened found yourself face to face with the blonde bombshell that you had been trying so hard not to fall in love-at-first-sight with.

“Um, this is yours, I think,” you mumbled, extending it towards him in an attempt to put something between you. He really was standing very close.

“Oh thanks very much. I should really be more careful with it,” he chuckled, “It’s new.”

“It’s very nice,” you said, trying to be polite and friendly.

“Ye know what it’s made of?”

“Boyfriend material?”

As soon as the words left your lips you were horrified. It was a just instinct, as was the heavily sarcastic tone it came dripped in, but he was sure to think you were being far too forward.

“Nay,” he said, inclining his head and fully laughing now, “Cashmere, I thought it was fancy.”

You bit your lip to hide your embarrassment. “Sorry, I guess I’ve heard that line one too many times.”

 You made your way to the refreshments table together, in silence, and each made yourself a cup of tea. You felt him watching as you poured in the milk, and had to force your hand not to shake. You didn’t know why, but he made you far more nervous than the whole experience did.

“Ye make a good brew,” he said over your shoulder, “Ye cannae trust someone who can’ make a good brew.”

You smiled, “Thanks. I’d usually make it in a teapot, but needs must.”

“Oh, she’s classy.”

You inclined your head a little smugly, but internally gasped. Where had that sudden burst of confidence come from? Your voice was steady and you somehow managed to appear sophisticated and nonchalant. In an attempt to quit while you were ahead, you shuffled to a relatively quiet corner and cradled your drink, but were surprised to see that he had followed you over.

“I’m Jack, by the way.”

“Y/N”, you replied and took his outstretched hand.

With a knowing look he asked, “Is this yer first time workin’ on a film?”

You nodded, “How did you guess?” with a mix of sarcasm and curiosity.

“Ye wrote down Chris’ every word. I get it though, got massive respect for the guy but he’s a wee bit intimidating. I feel like I have te learn everything I can from ‘im.”

Little he knew, you couldn’t be further from intimidated by Chris, and it was his own charisma that had you furiously scribbling. For some reason, however, you felt disinclined to tell him about your relationship with Chris, and only nodded.

“So what’s yer role on the film then?”

“I’m a sort of assisting assistant director, I guess. I’m pretty sure my official title is ‘General Dogsbody’. You can call me GD for short.”

That made him laugh richly, causing a warm, joyful tingling to rush over your body in a way that you had never experienced before.

“It’s a foot in the industry though, once ye’ve go’ that, as long as ye work hard, ye’re set.”

“Well, that’s the idea anyway.”

“How’d ye manage te get the job?”

Internally cursing, you opened and closed your mouth like a goldfish, trying to come up with a way to sidestep the question without outright lying.

“Umm…”

Thankfully, you were saved by a dark, curly-haired man whom you recognised as one of the actors, rushing up to Jack and crushing him in a hug.

“Jack, mate, how’ve you been?”

You stood awkwardly as they caught up briefly, clearly friends beforehand. But after a moment Jack looked over to you and smiled, “Aneurin, this is Y/N, she’s a GD. Oh sorry, an AD.”

You giggled, and marvelled that you had known his man for an hour but already had an inside joke with him.

“Okay everyone, that’s great. I think we can call it a day.”

You sighed in relief, all but dead on your feet. You’d just finished a busy day, filming on the beach in the morning with Fionn, Harry and Ni, then doing some spitfire stuff with Jack in the afternoon. You technically didn’t need to be there for the afternoon, but you liked seeing Jack in his uniform. Anyway, you were there to learn, so that’s what you were doing whenever you had the chance. It was still very early days in the shoot but you were already knackered. This film-making business was hard work. Chris had given you the role of organising the lads, to keep them in check and on schedule, as well as being a runner on set. He’d even consulted you on a shot once or twice, but you reckoned that was probably just to make you feel a bit important.

“How’re you doing petal?” Chris cooed, pulling the monitor off from round his neck and wrapping an arm around your shoulders in a sideways embrace.

“I’m good, just tired. These early mornings are killer. How about you though? Your job is much harder than mine!”

He smiled, “I’m doing what I love, it’s never a chore.”

As Jack was clambering out of the spitfire, you noticed out of the corner of your eye that he was watching your exchange with some curiosity. When he caught your eye, he shot you a quizzical look, one eyebrow raised and brow furrowed. You looked away, ashamed that you still hadn’t told him that Chris was your godfather, and focused on the ground as Chris placed an affectionate kiss on your head.

You scuttled off to your hotel room faster than usual to avoid Jack’s inevitable questions.

 That evening, after you’d had a warm shower and some food, you were sat cross-legged on your bed, enjoying some well-earned me time. Much to your displeasure, however, it was interrupted by a knock on the door.

“Y/N!” Harry sing-songed through the door; of course it was Harry.

You unfolded your limbs and got up to open the door.

“What do you want?” you huffed.

“Don’t be mardy, come hang out. We’re all in Glynn-Carney’s room.”

“I’m in my comfies.”

“Comfies?” Harry smirked.

You rolled your eyes and pointed at your sweats and baggy jumper – sweater paws and all.

“Oh who cares. Look, doesn’t a bottle of wine and some good company sound better than sitting here on your own?”

“The company is questionable at best, but the wine is tempting.”

 Harry led you down the corridor and the door was opened to reveal a group of already giddy twenty-something year olds and more than a few bottles.

“There’s a little more than a bottle of wine here I see. Who started on the whiskey?”

Everyone instantly pointed to Jack, who shamelessly raised his hand.

“Dumb question,” you muttered.

You sat down, and took the glass of wine offered to you.

 “So, Miss Y/N, you’re in charge of us, right?” Tom said with a twinkle in his eye, “What shall we do?”

“I don’t know,” you scoffed, “Watch a film or something?”

“We were thinkin’ summin’ more along the lines o’ a drinking game” Barry chuckled.

“We have work tomorrow. I don’t think Chris would be too pleased if we all show up hungover.”

“Best make it something enlightening and/or educational then,” Aneurin grinned.

“Enlightening and/or educational,” you huffed in disbelief. “You can wipe that shit-eating grin off your face Ni,” you laughed, somehow expelling the disgruntled attitude from you. “We’ll play truths. Someone asks you an uncomfortable question, you answer or you drink. It’s a bonding exercise, so we can get to know each other better.”

 They seemed to like your idea, and began asking each other questions, which were mostly, unsurprisingly, sex-orientated. When it was Jack’s turn to ask you a question, he rounded on you and asked, without hesitation, “What is the nature of your relationship with Christopher Nolan?”

Harry gasped and exclaimed, “Is Y/N screwing the director! You sly fox!”

“Ew, no mate, he’s her godfather,” Fionn corrected, hitting him on the arm.

You shrugged, indicating that it was true, and looked a little sheepishly at Jack. You watched as the realisation dawned on his face. “Wait, Fionn, how did you know?” he questioned, once he had fully processed the information.

“Viv told me.” Vivienne, the head make-up artists, was a notorious gossip and somehow knew everything about everyone. You all nodded in understanding.

“Well, now you know,” you said with a little uneasiness, “Let the piss-taking commence, I suppose.”

“Us lot? Take the piss? Never. Anyway, it’s not like you’re only person on the film that’s not here purely on merit… oh wait.” Harry grinned.

“Purely on merit, Styles? I thought you were just here to bring in the teenage girl demographic,” you retorted, followed by a chorus of ‘ooohh’s.

Thinking you’d got off the hook with your question, you tried to move on, but before you could, Barry proclaimed, “Y/N needs a new question, she didn’t even answer tha’ one.”

“What’s your sexual fantasy?” Tom piped up.

You groaned, as your eyes skipped to Jack’s for just a second. You were unwilling to share, as in recent weeks your sexual fantasy had involved one blonde-haired, blue-eyed Scottish arsehole, so instead took a big gulp of your drink.
