But perhaps my favorite feature in this section is the ability to attach a memo to any transaction, which will cover a bit more in the next section.
Memos and bills
As I just mentioned, Zeta allows users to add memos to any transaction. Using this feature, you can ask your partner for clarification on a purchase you don’t remember, add reminders about upcoming due dates, or really any other helpful notes you see fit. You can then view all of these notes by visiting the Memos section of the app, accessed by tapping “More” and then “Memos” in the app. You or your partner also have the ability to respond to any of these memos, making it a simple way to communicate when you can’t meet face to face.
Another feature of Zeta I found helpful is the Bills section, also reached via the More tab. From what I can tell, Zeta automatically picked up on due dates for certain recurring bills based on your transaction history and places them on a calendar. You can refine these due dates by making changes to their recurring cycle, amounts, and spending category . Of course you can also manually add other bills you wish to keep track of. Even better, Zeta allows you to select from various reminder options (email, text, push notifications), and select whether these reminders should go to you or both you and your partner. Oh, and you can add custom emojis to mark your billing calendar with — a surprising nice touch.
My Experience with Zeta
Selecting bill alerts
Of all the features Zeta has, the bill due calendar may just be my favorite. First of all I was impressed with how the app automatically detected recurring dates and took a lot of the work out by filling the calendar for me. Plus the ability to remind myself and my wife about upcoming due dates — and via my preferred medium — is also super helpful. To be fair most of the items Zeta found are already set up to autopay but there’s definitely still value in knowing when certain transactions will be coming up and receive alerts about those that won’t pay themselves.
The “More” tab
Speaking of the bill calendar, as I noted, this feature is included in the More section on the app along with a few other tabs. This actually raises an issue I have with Zeta in that I find the whole More tab to be a bit clunky. Not only is it somewhat annoying to have to tab an extra button to access what I want (woe is me, right?) but the app also defaults to the main line up once you select your tab, meaning that going from Bills to Memos requires you to hit the More tab in between. It’s also ironic that these happen to be my two favorite features, so perhaps I’m just a bit biased in this area. Regardless I hope the app can find a more elegant way to lay out their navigation and make switching between functions easier.
Building a budget
Another minor annoyance I found in Zeta is that building a budget can be a bit cumbersome. For example, although Zeta auto-categorizes transactions from the jump, it seems you need to start from scratch when selecting which categories to focus on instead of just plugging in numbers to some preset favorites. To be clear, you can add a number of pre-programmed categories and have transactions show up under those tags but, until you do so, they’ll simply be lumped into “everything else.” On the one hand this actually works fairly well for my wife and I as we only focus on a few spending categories instead of getting too granular, but I suspect those who want a more line by line budget may find this set-up process tedious — especially as the “Edit Budgets” workflow seems to operate more like a webpage than an app to me, offering autofill but not great support for scrolling.
Not to pile on but my issues with the budgeting section don’t stop there. For one thing, as far as I can tell, the only way to access this feature is via the widget in Overview. Sure it has a fairly prominent position there but, considering that budgeting is a big part of managing your money, I’d expect it to have a proper home of its own.
Zeta on desktop
After that rant about the troubles I had trying to set up a budget in Zeta, I found that the task is made easier via Zeta for desktop. That’s right — you can also access all of your Zeta data by visiting their website and logging in. The larger screen makes adding new budget categories much easier than on the app. Plus you can access much of the same info and other tabs you do on the app in a slightly rearranged form. For that reason I’d definitely recommend trying out the desktop site when getting started with Zeta and then making subsequent changes and updates via the app.
Final Thoughts on Zeta
Overall I found myself really appreciating some of Zeta’s features. Some of my personal favorites included the ability to append memos to transactions, set bill reminders, and build savings goals into your budget. On top of that I can definitely see how the app could succeed in helping couples stay on top of their finances and manage their money more effectively.
With that said, like I mentioned in my review of Honeydue, I do question some elements of the app’s premise. While I’m all in favor of married couples still retaining separate bank accounts, I can’t help shake the perception that having private or secret accounts feels duplicitous. However I fully acknowledge that not all couples are alike nor is everyone using Zeta going to be in a place in their relationship where they can fully merge their finances. Therefore, although I wanted to at least mention this, I realize I may be unfairly judgemental here.
All in all, aside from the tweaks I recommended regarding setting up your budget, I really like what Zeta has built. Admittedly my wife and I may not use it quite as intended but I do think that the bill reminders could certainly be of use to us as an extra backup. So, if you and your partnering are looking for an easy way to manage your finances together and master your money, Zeta could be a great place to start.

Top 10 web design tips to get the ideal website
Let’s be clear: web design is an involved discipline that can take a lifetime to master. As if that weren’t hard enough, it’s also a field that’s evolving every second as technology keeps advancing—imagine da Vinci’s frustration if people complained the Mona Lisa “looked old” after just five years.
Web design is something that pretty much everyone on the managerial end of a business has to deal with, but only design professionals truly understand. If you want a great web design, you have to learn the basics, so you can communicate want you want. Even if you’re hiring a professional to design your page for you, you still need some background information to discern a talented web designer from a mediocre one and explain what you need them to do.
We know how hard it is for non-designers to get the hang of this whole web design thing, so we created this handy guide to walk you through the basics. Here are the top ten web design tips you need to know about (plus some useful dos and don’ts), divided into three categories: Composition, Aesthetics and Functionality. Whether you’re hiring a designer or DIY-ing, check your final web design for these ten fundamentals.
Composition —
1. Clear out the clutter.
First, let’s address one of the most common beginner mistakes in web design: a cluttered screen. Most people have a list of everything they want on their website, and without knowing any better, they just throw it all on screen��and on the same page.

Basically, every element you add to your web design waters down all the others. If you include too many distracting elements, your user doesn’t know where to look and you lose a coherent experience. By contrast, if you only include the necessary elements, those elements are more potent since they don’t have to share center stage.
More white space means less clutter and that’s what really matters in a minimalist, clean web design.

See how the home screen in the Intenz example by Top Level designer Slaviana features nothing but the essentials: navigation menu, logo, tagline, main call-to-action (CTA) and some sparse imagery for atmosphere and to show off the product. They feature other information of course, but present it later so their screens are never too crowded. It’s the visual equivalent of pacing.
For a web design to be effective, it needs to be streamlined—there must be a clear path or paths for the user to follow. There are many different ways to achieve this (some explained below), but the first step is always to create space for high-priority elements by removing low-priority ones.
Do:
Trim the fat. Audit your designs for the essentials. If an element doesn’t add to or improve the overall experience, remove it. If an element can live on another screen, move it there.
Limit pull-out menus. Pull-out menus (drop-downs, fold-outs, etc.) are a good way to reduce clutter, but don’t just sweep your problems “under the rug.” If possible, try to limit these hidden menus to seven items.
Don’t:
Use sidebars. New visitors probably won’t use them. Plus, if all the options don’t fit in your main navigation menu, you need to simplify your navigation structure anyway (see below).
Use sliders. The motion and new images in a slider are distracting and they weaken your control over what your users see. It’s better to showcase only your best images, all of the time.
2. Use ample white space.
How are you going to fill all that space you created after clearing out the clutter? Might we suggest filling it with nothing?

Negative space (a.k.a. white space) is the technical term in visual arts for areas in an image that do not attract attention. Typically, these are empty or blank, like a cloudless sky or a monochrome wall. Although boring on its own, when used artistically, negative space can complement and enhance the main subject, improve legibility and make the image easier to “take in.”
My mantra is: simple is always better. It draws attention to what’s important for the user almost instantly. Also, simple is attractive.

In the Streamflow example by Top Level designer Hitron, the tagline and CTA take the main focus, not because they’re flashy or garish, but because of all the negative space around them. This landing screen makes it easier for the user to understand what the company does and where on the site to go next. They include gorgeous imagery of the clouds, too, but in a beautiful, minimalistic way—a clever composition with plenty of strategic negative space.
Do:
Surround your most important elements with negative space. The more negative space around something, the more attention it receives.
Avoid boring layouts with secondary visuals. Other aesthetic elements like color or typography (see below) can pick up the slack visually when there’s a lot of negative space.
Don’t:
Emphasize the wrong element. Surround only top-priority elements with negative space. For example, if your goal is conversions, surround your email or sales CTA with negative space—not your logo or sales pitch.
Use busy backgrounds. By definition, backgrounds are supposed to go largely unnoticed. If your background doesn’t have enough negative space, it will steal attention from your main elements.
3. Guide your user’s eyes with visual hierarchy.
If using a technical term like “negative space” didn’t phase you, what do you think of “visual hierarchy”? It refers to using different visual elements like size or placement to influence which elements your user sees first, second or last. Featuring a big, bold title at the top of the webpage and tiny legal information at the bottom is a good example of using visual hierarchy to prioritize certain elements over others.

Web design isn’t just about what you add to your website, but how you add it. Take CTA buttons; it’s not enough that they’re simply there; skilled designers place them deliberately and give them bold colors to stand out and suggestive text to encourage clicks. Elements like size, color, placement and negative space can all increase engagement—or decrease it.
The Shearline homepage example above prioritizes three elements: the title, the image of the product and the call to action. Everything else—the navigation menu, the logo, the explanatory text—all seem secondary. This was a conscious choice from the designer, enacted through a smart use of size, color and placement.

Review this chart from Orbit Media Studios to learn how to attract or repel attention. It’s an oversimplification of a complex topic, but it works well for understanding the bare basics.
Do:
Design for scannability. Most users don’t read every word of a page. They don’t even see everything on a page. Design for this behavior by making your top priorities hard to ignore.
Test multiple alternatives. Because visual hierarchy can get complicated, sometimes trial-and-error works best. Create a few different versions (“mockups”) and show them to a new set of eyes for different opinions.
Don’t:
Use competing elements. Visual hierarchy is about order: first this, then that. Stagger how much attention each one of your essential elements receives so your users’ eyes easily follow a clear path.
Go overboard. Making elements too big or featuring too much color contrast can have the opposite effect. Use only as many attention-grabbing tactics as you need—and no more.
Aesthetics —
4. Choose your colors strategically.
Now that you’re familiar with the concepts of good composition, let’s talk about the specifics of that composition. We’ll start with color, a powerful tool for any designer.

For one thing, every color has a different emotional connotation. If your brand identity is passionate and energetic, an exhilarating red would fit better than a tranquil blue. Aside from choosing the best colors to represent your brand, you also need to use them well, like contrasting colors off each other to establish visual hierarchy.
To use color effectively in web design you have to understand how colors are formed and how they relate to each other. Harmony and balance are the keys to success.

Just look at how Top Level designer Desinly uses orange in the web design for Oil Sands Masterclass above. First, orange is a smart choice because it’s often associated with the heavy operation equipment the company deals with. On top of that, they pair the orange beautifully with a black background to make it stand out more. They also use the same color consistently as a highlight for keywords and buttons, plus they even integrate it into the background photography.
Do:
Establish a color hierarchy. Use a single color each for your main elements (primary), highlights (secondary) and other less-important elements (background).
Stick with consistent themes. Once you have an established color palette, stick with it. Keep your primary, secondary, and background colors consistent throughout your entire site.
Don’t:
Choose your own personal favorite colors. The effects of colors have a proven effect on marketing. Research color theory and don’t waste a critical branding opportunity.
Clash colors. Choosing colors logically isn’t enough; they also need to go well with each other. Purple and red may both represent your brand well, but the effect is lost if they clash and make an ugly final design.
5. Don’t skimp on photography.

Although optional, if you do choose to use real-life photography in your web design, make sure you do it right. Effective, meaningful photography can further your business goals, but poor-quality photos hold you back.
With photography there has to be a connection between branding and concept. Photography can create contrast, attract attention or even draw your eyes to the next section of the page.

Using photography in web design follows many of the same guidelines for good photography in general. A stunning photo hung in an art gallery can be just as stunning on a website, but the mood, style and topics have to coincide. Just look at the tantalizing photograph in Top Level designer JPSDesign’s web design above. Those blueberries would look delicious anywhere, but it’s particularly effective on a grocer’s website.
Do:
Use real people. Images of people tend to engage users more—especially pictures of your actual staff or actual customers.
Set the right atmosphere. Photography comes in almost infinite styles, so use the ones that best reflect what your website is going for. If you want a cheerful website, use pictures of people smiling.
Don’t:
Use obvious stock photography. The operative word there is “obvious.” Stock imagery can be beneficial, but only if the user doesn’t realize it’s stock.
Use low resolutions. This is the era of high definition, so low-resolution photography makes a brand seem old or unsuccessful. Bonus tip: use a compressor to reduce large file sizes so you can have your cake and eat it too.
6. Optimize typography to build your brand.
While the words you or your copywriter choose are extremely influential, you can also enhance their effectiveness by giving them the right look.

Typography encompasses all the visuals of text, particularly fonts, but also other elements like size, text color, style (italics, bold, etc.) and the spacing between letters, words and lines. All of these impact the visual hierarchy and how your brand is perceived.
Typography can be visually appealing, but if you use distracting fonts, your reader won’t be able to focus on what you’re trying to say and can become irritated with your website. Combining bold typography with a minimalist twist is your winning ticket.

Like colors and photography, typography comes in a diverse array of styles, so pick the one that complements your brand most. To add a little sophistication to the Her Habesha web design above, Top Level designer Studio Ubique uses a striking yet classy typography for the titles. But notice how the typography changes to subtle, modern sans-serifs for the product titles below the pictures to achieve a balance.
Do:
Use web fonts. For all the variety in fonts, remember to stick with verified “web safe fonts” that can be displayed on most devices and computer monitors. You can learn how to identify them here.
Study the different types. Do you know what a serif is? Typography is extremely nuanced, so bone up on the five types of fonts to give yourself some context.
Don’t:
Overuse flashy fonts. Flamboyant, attention-grabbing fonts can work well for titles or standalone words, but are too distracting when used excessively.
Use the same typography for everything. As in the Her Habesha example, typography works best when it’s balanced. Use different sets for headers, subheaders and body text—and stay consistent with these sets throughout the site.
Functionality —
7. Streamline navigation.
Finally, we move on to functionality: what your site can do. The conversation about functionality should always start with navigation, the backbone of any website.

Everyone has their own methods for finding their way around a website. A good web design caters its navigation to its target users so that it feels intuitive—the less users have to think about it, the better.
But that’s no easy feat. It starts with how the entire site is organized: what gets its own page, what gets shunted to a subpage, what is and is not featured in the main menu. Each of these questions need to be answered before the actual web design really takes off.
From there, you have to design your navigation in a way that’s easy for visitors to use, just like in the example above.
Do:
Find a balance for the amount of options. You want to give users plenty of options, but you don’t want to overwhelm them. Organize your page categories in a way that satisfies these conflicting goals.
Build navigation around real user data. When shopping for shoes online, some users would search under “clothing” and some under “accessories.” Different user groups have different preferences; build your navigation architecture around how your users think, according to actual data. You can conduct some user tests if you’re in the dark.
Don’t:
Experiment with unusual formats. While experimentation in healthy doses can elicit some new and great ideas, it’s not recommended for something as vital as navigation. To avoid making your user think too hard, stick to the conventions that users already understand: top header navigation menu, logo linked to the homepage, search bar with magnifying glass icon, etc.
8. Prioritize mobile.

Older (but not old!) people tend to think of web design in terms of desktop screens, but the truth is nowadays people do most of their browsing on mobile devices. That’s why you need to make sure your mobile site is in peak condition. Not just for your user’s sake, but for Google’s as well—the Google algorithm factors in mobile responsiveness to their search rankings.
“Mobile responsiveness” refers to how well your site appears on small-screen devices. If your website is cut off on mobile devices or the images appear in the wrong places, your visitors won’t have a pleasant experience using your website. In addition to smaller screens, mobile devices also have a whole new set of design guidelines, including controls like “swipes,” so don’t assume your desktop version will translate seamlessly.
These days it’s really important to consider a mobile first approach. People tend to use mobile layouts differently than desktop versions, so how the website will perform on mobile is integral to an effective design. Focus on minimal, clean design and eliminate clutter to make it easier for users to focus on the content.

Your mobile version should be a top consideration, right from the start. But that doesn’t mean you can neglect your desktop version. Your website needs to look good no matter what device people use to look at it. Take a look at the web design above to see how Top Level designer Ink’d created variations of a design and—with some slight tweaking—makes it look good on both large and small screens.
Do:
Design the mobile version first. When designing the mobile version, you work with only the essentials because of the limited screen space. It’s easier to tackle the mobile version first and then add elements to the desktop version rather than designing the desktop version first and then removing elements.
Prioritize devices based on user data. “Mobile” devices is an umbrella term, but different phone and tablet types have different screen sizes and technical considerations. Refer to user data to see which devices your visitors use most, then prioritize them in the design.
Don’t:
Use m.dot sites. Those mobile sites that have “m.” in their URL were an early solution to mobile responsive designs before designers knew mobile would overtake desktop. Today, they’re slower to load and damaging to SEO—the best option is to design a single site that works on all relevant devices.
9. Make text easy to read.

Designing a site specifically around visuals could harm its legibility. If you’re using a font that looks good but no one can read, you’re throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
When we say a website should be easy to read, we’re talking about three different meanings:
Well-written. The copy text is written to suit your business goals and in a voice that appeals to your audience.
Aesthetically laid out. The copy text is displayed well, preferably with plenty of space and in digestible blocks that don’t overwhelm the reader.
Legible. The font and size are both conducive to reading, without strain or double-backing.
While legibility stems mostly from typography, you also must consider composition and structure, as well as how the text interacts with other elements—not to mention the quality of the actual writing.
Having an amazing web design won’t matter if no one can read your text. Top Level designer akorn.creative takes this to heart—see how in the web design above they faded the background photograph to black to create more contrast with the text and make it readable.
Do:
Pay attention to color pairings. How the text color interacts with the background greatly affects legibility, especially with people who have reading or sight disabilities. Try to stick with contrasting pairs (light and dark tones), and if all else fails, you can always fall back on the classic black-and-white.
Test designs on different readers. What’s legible to you may not be legible to everyone. Test your designs with various readers to cover all your bases.
Don’t:
Use cursive or showy fonts for body text. Extravagant fonts work well in making headers and titles more visible, but when the user has to read line-after-line of text, it’s best to stick with a simple font that’s easy on the eyes.
Include large blocks of text. Large blocks of text intimidate readers, even outside of web design. It’s best to break them up using proactive page formatting or even forced paragraph breaks.
10. Communicate what you want to your designer.

Let’s say you have a grand idea for a feature of your website. The better you’re able to explain it to a designer, the more likely the final version will turn out like you envision.
Because it’s a team effort, web design doesn’t just involve technical skills, but also communication skills. Communicating what you want for your site, in detail, is the direct path to getting a satisfactory design. Web designers aren’t mind readers, after all.
In the AUSMAIDS example by Top Level designer akdcreative above, it seems as if the client knew they wanted a widget that allowed the user to input the numbers of rooms and the frequency of the visits. The designer took that idea and made it look good. That’s the ideal collaboration between client and designer, and the stellar final product shows it.
Do:
Plan out what you want beforehand. Either write what you want on paper or create a wireframe. Both help you remember everything and they give your designer a solid jumping off point.
Keep an open mind. It’s your designer’s job to make your website as great as possible, so keep an open mind to their suggestions, even if it’s different than what you anticipated. Chances are, they know something you don’t.
Don’t:
Be vague or generic. Using vague and generic terms like “colorful” or “interactive” don’t really say much. Which colors? How do users interact? Be as specific as possible—or agree to leave it up to the designer.
You’ve got this! (Or at least your designer does.)
It’s one thing to read these 10 web design tips, but it’s another thing entirely to apply them to your own site. Fields like color theory, typography, composition and mobile responsiveness are all pretty in-depth, so don’t be discouraged if you’re not getting it all in one sitting. Only professional designers can truly appreciate the nuances of these areas. Hiring someone who understands these web design principles instinctively is usually the safest route to great design.

How to set up event tracking in Google Analytics
Event tracking is one of the most useful features in Google Analytics.
With just a little bit of extra code, you can capture all kinds of information about how people behave on your site.
Event tracking lets you monitor just about any action that doesn’t trigger a new page to load, such as watching a video or clicking on an outbound link. This data can be invaluable in improving your site.
There are two different ways you can set up event tracking in Google Analytics. One way is to add the code manually. The other is to set up tracking through Google Tag Manager.
Both methods are doable without a developer, although you may find it easier to use Google Tag Manager if you have no coding experience.
How to set up event tracking manually
What exactly is an event? Before you start tracking events, it’s important to understand how they’re put together. Each event is made up of four components that you define. These are category, action, label, and value.
Category
A category is an overall group of events. You can create more than one type of event to track in the same category “basket.”
For instance, you could create a category called Downloads to group a number of different events involving various downloads from your site.
Action
An event’s action describes the particular action that the event is set up to track. If you’re tracking downloads of a PDF file, for instance, you might call your event’s action Download PDF.
Label
Your label provides more information about the action taken. For instance, if you have several PDFs available for download on your site, you can keep track of how many people download each one by labeling each separate event with the PDF’s title.
A label is optional, but it’s almost always a good idea to use one.
Value
Value is an optional component that lets you track a numerical value associated with an event. Unlike the first three components, which are made up of text, value is always an integer.
For instance, if you wanted to keep track of a video’s load time, you would use the value component to do so. If you don’t need to keep track of anything numerical, it’s fine to leave this component out of your event.

Step one: Decide how to structure your reports
Before you dive into tracking your events, come up with a plan for how you want your data to be organized. Decide which categories, actions, and labels you’ll use, and choose a clear and consistent naming pattern for them.
Remember, if you decide to change the structure of your event tracking later, your data won’t be reorganized retroactively. A little thought and planning up front can save you a lot of hassle down the road.
Step two: Connect your site to Google Analytics
If you haven’t done so already, set up a Google Analytics property and get your tracking ID. You can find your tracking ID by going to the admin section of your GA account and navigating to the property you want to track.
Once you have your ID, add the following snippet right after the <head> tag of each page:

Step three: Add code snippets to elements you want to track
Here is the format for an event tracking code snippet:
ga('send', 'event', [eventCategory], [eventAction], [eventLabel], [eventValue], [fieldsObject]);
After filling in the information that defines the event you want to track, add this snippet to the relevant element on your webpage. You’ll need to use something called an event handler to do so.
An event handler is a HTML term that triggers your tracking code to fire when a specific action is completed. For instance, if you wanted to track how many times visitors clicked on a button, you would use the onclick event handler and your code would look like this:

Step four: Verify that your code is working
Once you’ve added event tracking code to your page, the final step is to make sure it’s working. The simplest way to do this is to trigger the event yourself. Then, check Google Analytics to see if the event showed up.
You can view your tracked events by clicking “Behavior” in the sidebar and scrolling down to “Events.”

How to set up event tracking with Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager can be a little tricky to navigate if you aren’t familiar with it. However, if you’ve never worked with code before, you might find tracking events with GTM easier than doing it manually.
If you have a large site or you want to track many different things, GTM can also help you scale your event tracking easily.
Step one: Enable built-in click variables
You’ll need GTM’s built-in click variables to create your tags and triggers, so start by making sure they are enabled. Select “Variables” in the sidebar and click the “Configure” button.

Step two: Create a new tag for the event you want to track
Click “Tags” on the sidebar. Then click the “New” button. You’ll have the option to select your tag type. Choose “Universal Analytics.”

Step three: Configure your tag
Set your new tag’s track type to “Event.” Fill in all the relevant information – category, action, label, etc. – in the fields that appear underneath, and click “Continue.”

Step four: Specify your trigger
Specify the trigger that will make your tag fire – for instance, a click. If you are creating a new trigger (as opposed to using one you’ve created in the past), you will need to configure it.

Step five: Save the finished tag
After you save your trigger, it should show up in your tag. Click “Save Tag” to complete the process.

Decoding the Facebook Algorithm: A Fully Up-to-Date List of the Algorithm Factors and Changes
If you do Facebook marketing, one thing that you might want to understand is the Facebook algorithm.
The Facebook algorithm helps make sense of the huge number of posts that people and businesses share every day and chooses the posts to show in our News Feed based on a huge number of factors.
We want to help you understand how your Facebook posts get viewed on Facebook. So we’re collecting all the relevant Facebook algorithm factors, updates, and changes and placing them here in this post for easy reference.

Facebook algorithm values
Understanding the Facebook algorithm starts with knowing the core values that Facebook uses to guide their thinking and work. These values can give you a hint of what content will do well or not so well on Facebook.
Here’s a brief summary of Facebook’s News Feed values:
Friends and family come first: The main objective of the News Feed is to connect people with their friends and family. So posts from friends and family are prioritized. After those posts, Facebook found that people want their feed to inform and entertain them.
A platform for all ideas: Facebook welcomes all ideas while making sure that everyone feels and is safe. They aim to deliver stories that each individual wants to see the most, based on their actions and feedback.
Authentic communications: Facebook prioritizes genuine stories over misleading, sensational, and spammy ones.
You control your experience: Individuals know themselves best. So Facebook creates features (such as unfollow and see first) to let people customize their Facebook experience.
Constant iteration: Facebook strives to constantly collect feedback and improve the platform.
The overview of the Facebook algorithm
So how does Facebook decide what to show in a News Feed?
Here’s a quick overview of how the Facebook News Feed works, according to Adam Mosseri, VP of Product Management for News Feed:
To make it easy for you to understand the Facebook algorithm, we went through all the (known) changes that Facebook has implemented to its algorithm and came up with a list of factors that we think may determine whether your post shows up or not.

August 28, 2017: Pages that repeatedly share false news
Facebook will be blocking Pages that share false news from buying ads on Facebook1Facebook, 2017. 
Facebook found that some Pages had been using Facebook ads to build their following and share false news more widely. To prevent the spread of false news on Facebook, Pages that repeatedly share false news will no longer be allowed to buy Facebook ads (until they stop sharing such news).
The false news will be identified by third-party fact-checkers.
How may this affect your Page? If you share false news on your Page (perhaps unintentionally), you might be blocked from buying ads. It’s great to always check the validity of content before sharing it.
August 17, 2017: Video clickbait
Facebook will be demoting Facebook posts that pretend to be a video2Facebook, 2017.
Spammers have been tricking people to click on Facebook posts that look like a video but aren’t. These deceptive posts are often videos with just a static image or they feature a false video play button when it’s actually a link.

How may this affect your Page? Facebook warned that Pages that rely on such practices will see a significant fall in reach while most other Pages won’t be affected much4Facebook, 2017.
August 2, 2017: Webpage load time
Facebook will be showing fewer stories with links that might take a long time to load5Facebook, 2017.
It’s frustrating when a website takes a long time to load. Facebook found that “As many as 40 percent of website visitors abandon a site after three seconds of delay.”
Hence, Facebook is rolling out an update to show more posts with links that load quickly and fewer posts with links that might load slowly, in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? If your websites are particularly slow on mobile, you might see a fall in referral traffic from Facebook. Here are some tools and tips for improving your mobile site performance.
May 17, 2017: Clickbait headlines
Facebook is rolling out an update to show fewer posts with clickbait headlines6Facebook, 2017.
In its continued effort to make Facebook an informed community, Facebook is reducing the number of clickbait stories in the News Feed. This includes posts with headlines that withhold or exaggerate information, such as the following:
“When She Looked Under Her Couch Cushions And Saw THIS…”
“WOW! Ginger tea is the secret to everlasting youth. You’ve GOT to see this!”
Posts that link to articles with such headlines will rank lower in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? If you depend on such headlines to get a wide reach on Facebook, you will see a fall in your reach. The good news is that once you stop posting such clickbait stories, your Facebook posts will stop being affected by this change.
May 10, 2017: Low-quality webpage experience
Facebook is rolling out an update to show fewer posts and ads that link to websites with low-quality experience7Facebook, 2017.
To help build an informed community on Facebook, Facebook will be showing fewer posts that are “misleading, sensational and spammy”. Specifically, they are referring to websites with low-quality experiences, such as the following:
Websites that contain little substantive content
Websites that have a large number of disruptive, shocking, or malicious ads
Posts that link to such websites will rank lower in the News Feed and might not be allowed to be used as Facebook ads.
How may this affect your Page? You might experience a small increase in traffic if you do not share such content. Otherwise, you’ll likely see a fall in your reach and referral traffic.
January 31, 2017: Authentic and timely stories
Facebook is making two changes to help authentic and timely stories rank better8Facebook, 2017.
To surface authentic content, Facebook will be analyzing Facebook Pages to see if they have been posting spam or trying to game the News Feed by asking for Likes, comments, or shares. If Facebook finds that a Page’s posts might not be authentic, such as people are often hiding those posts, Facebook will rank those posts lower in the News Feed.
To show people stories at the right time, Facebook will now study how people interact with posts in real time. For example, if there’s an important soccer game going on and many people are talking about it on Facebook, Facebook will show relevant posts higher in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? Some Pages might see a tiny increase in their referral traffic. Consider posting timely, relevant posts to get more reach on Facebook.
January 26, 2017: Video completion
Facebook is going to show long videos that people spend time watching to even more people9Facebook, 2017. 
When ranking videos in the News Feed, a factor that Facebook considers is “percent completion” — the percentage of the video you watched.
Facebook now recognize that it takes more commitment to complete a long video than a short one. So it will now put more weight on the “percent completion” factor for longer videos.
As an example, if people are, on average, watching 50% of a 30-second video and 50% of a 10-minute video, the 10-minute video will rank better in the News Feed than the 30-second video. That’s because the 10-minute video has to be more engaging than the 30-second video to keep people watching for five minutes (vs 15 seconds).
How may this affect your Page? If you create long, engaging videos, you might see an increase in your videos’ reach. Short videos, as a result, might see a fall in reach.
August 11, 2016: Personally informative stories
Facebook will be showing you more stories that are personally informative to you10Facebook, 2016. 
From its Feed Quality Program, Facebook found that people enjoy stories that are informative to them. Using the patterns that they learned from the program, Facebook will try to identify stories that are informative — usually, if they are related to people’s interests, if they engage people in broader discussions, and if they contain news relevant to them.
Facebook will then combine this new signal with signals of how relevant the story might be to each individual, to predict if they might like it.
How may this affect your Page? Informative content might get more reach on Facebook. From our recent experience, educational and entertaining content performs really well on Facebook.
June 29, 2016: Stories from friends
Facebook will be showing stories from close friends higher up in the News Feed11Facebook, 2016. 
Despite the previous update, people are still worried about missing important updates from their close friends. So Facebook is tweaking the News Feed algorithm again to rank posts from close friends higher up in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? You’ll likely see a fall in your Facebook reach and referral traffic as posts from friends will rank better than posts from Pages. Facebook recommends posting content that your audience are likely to share with their friends12Facebook, 2016.
April 21, 2016: Time spent viewing
Facebook will be ranking articles that it thinks you will spend time reading, higher in the News Feed13Facebook, 2016. 
Facebook learned that the amount of time someone spent reading or watching the content of an article indicates how interesting the article was to them. So Facebook is adding a new ranking factor — how long someone might spend looking at the article.
To keep things fair between short and long articles, Facebook will be looking at the time spent within a threshold.
A smaller change within this update is that Facebook will be showing fewer posts from the same Page together in the News Feed. That’s because people find that repetitive and prefers content from a diverse range of Pages.
How may this affect your Page? There shouldn’t be any significant changes to your Page reach. That said, this reinforces the importance of creating engaging content.
March 1, 2016: Facebook Live
Facebook is more likely to rank Facebook Live videos higher in the News Feed when those videos are live than when they are no longer live14Facebook, 2016.
Facebook found that “People spend more than 3x more time watching a Facebook Live video on average compared to a video that’s no longer live.”15Facebook, 2016 That’s because those videos are more interesting when the event being filmed is happening live than after the event.
How may this affect your Page? You might see that your live videos perform better than your other Facebook videos in terms of reach and engagement. Experiment with Facebook Live videos and see if they work better for you.
February 24, 2016: Facebook Reactions
Facebook recently rolled out Reactions — their supercharged ‘Like’ button — to help businesses better understand how people are responding to their content16Facebook, 2016.
For a start, when someone uses a Reaction, Facebook will infer they want to see more of that type of post, just like when they Like a post. But this could change17Facebook, 2016.
In the beginning, it won’t matter if someone likes, “wows” or “sads” a post — we will initially use any Reaction similar to a Like to infer that you want to see more of that type of content. Over time we hope to learn how the different Reactions should be weighted differently by News Feed to do a better job of showing everyone the stories they most want to see.
How may this affect your Page? You will get a better sense of how people are reacting to your Facebook posts with the data in your Facebook Page Insights. If you’re interested in learning more about Facebook Reactions, you can find more information here.
December 4, 2015: Surveys
Facebook surveys thousands of people every day to improve the News Feed ranking18Facebook, 2015.
Besides looking at quantitative signals such as Likes, comments, and shares, Facebook also surveys thousands of people every day to understand whether the News Feed algorithm is showing people the posts they want to see.
Here’s an example of the survey:
If a popular post isn’t something that the people surveyed want to see, Facebook will rank that post lower in the future.
How may this affect your Page? This shouldn’t have a significant impact on your Page’s reach as viral posts are usually anomalies. But I believe it’s good to know that Facebook does not only look at Likes, comments, and shares when ranking your posts but also whether people actually want to see those posts. Relevance is key here.
July 9, 2015: Greater user control over the News Feed
Facebook is making it easier for people to adjust and customize their News Feed settings19Facebook, 2015. 
The preferences tab will be more visible and more intuitive, allowing people to find Pages and people to like and follow, and easily selecting to follow/unfollow certain content.
June 29, 2015: Actions on Videos
Facebook now considers more actions on videos while ranking videos in the News Feed20Facebook, 2015.
Facebook found that many people don’t feel inclined to Like, comment on, or share a video even when they enjoyed the video.
So besides considering whether someone watched the video and for how long, Facebook is now taking into account of more actions such as choosing to turn on the sound, watching the video in full screen, and enabling high definition. These actions indicate that they enjoyed the video.
How may this affect your Page? If your followers like the videos that you post, this update will help them see your videos more often in their News Feed.
June 12, 2015: Time spent on stories
How much time you spend viewing stories becomes a factor that Facebook uses to determine what to show at the top of your News Feed21Facebook, 2015.
While many people might not Like, comment on, or share a post that they found meaningful, they would likely spend more time on it than other posts. Hence, Facebook is taking this as a signal for ranking Facebook posts.
By understanding what types of content someone prefers, Facebook can surface similar types of content higher up in their News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? Facebook does not expect Pages to see significant changes in terms of reach. But if you want to improve your Facebook reach, making your content engaging could help.
April 21, 2015: Content from friends and Pages
Facebook is rolling out three updates to improve the experience of the News Feed22Facebook, 2015.
The first is for people who do not have much content to see — maybe because they don’t follow many people or Pages. Facebook used to have a rule that prevents people from seeing multiples stories from the same source in succession. They are now relaxing the rule so that if you reach the end of your News Feed but still want to see more stories, you’ll see more.
The second is to show posts from friends you care about, higher in your News Feed so that you are less likely to miss them. If you read and interact with posts from Pages, you’ll still see them on your News Feed.
The third is to reduce or remove stories about friends liking or commenting on a post, such as this:
How may this affect your Page? You’ll likely see a fall in reach as posts from friends will be prioritized before posts from Pages.
March 5, 2015: Facebook Likes
Facebook to update the way Page likes are counted, removing the likes of memorialized accounts and deactivated accounts23Facebook, 2015.
How may this affect your Page? It’s possible that you might see a small decline in the overall Likes for your Page once this update occurs.
January 20, 2015: Facebook targets hoaxes
Facebook aims to reduce the number of hoaxes in News Feed with algorithm tweak24Facebook, 2015.
To reduce the number of posts containing misleading or false news, Facebook has announced that the News Feed algorithm will begin to factor in when many people flag a post as false or choose to delete posts.
Facebook will reduce the reach of such posts and add a warning on the post (without reviewing or removing the post).
How may this affect your Page? Facebook found “from testing that people tend not to report satirical content intended to be humorous, or content that is clearly labeled as satire. This type of content should not be affected by this update.”25Facebook, 2015 Only Pages that often post hoaxes and false news will be affected.
January 7, 2015: Video is growing
Facebook has provided some new stats and tips on using video, including these:
In just one year, the number of video posts per person has increased 75 percent globally and 94 percent in the US.
The amount of video from people and brands in the News Feed has increased 3.6x year-over-year.
Since June 2014, Facebook has averaged more than 1 billion video views every day.
On average, more than 50 percent of people who come to Facebook every day in the US watch at least one video daily.
Seventy-six percent of people in the US who use Facebook say they tend to discover the videos they watch on Facebook.
How may this affect your Page? Facebook could be favoring video posts. Experiment with Facebook videos and see if they perform better than other post types.
November 14, 2014: Overly promotional Page posts
Facebook is rolling out an update to reduce the number of overly promotional posts in the News Feed26Facebook, 2014.
Facebook heard from people that they want less promotional content on their News Feed and more stories from friends and Pages they like.
After digging into their data, Facebook found that these are the types of posts that people find too promotional:
Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app
Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context
Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads
Here’s an example:
How may this affect your Page? Pages that often post such content will see a significant fall in their reach over time. To grow your reach, Facebook recommends posting relevant and high-quality content27Facebook, 2014.
September 18, 2014: When people Like and comment
Facebook will be looking at when people are Liking, commenting, and sharing28Facebook, 2014.
Facebook used to only look at the total number of Likes on a post when ranking it in the News Feed. Now, Facebook will also look at the rate at which people are Liking, commenting on, and sharing a post.
If people are engaging with the post right after it is posted, and not as much a few hours later, this suggests that the post was most interesting at the time it was posted, but potentially less interesting at a later date. Based on this signal it is more likely to appear higher in News Feed earlier on and lower at a later date.
How may this affect your Page? The reach of your posts isn’t just determined by the number of Likes they get but also by the rate at which people are interacting with it. Posts that consistently receive a good amount of engagement will be shown to more people on Facebook.
September 11, 2014: Offensive or inappropriate ads
Facebook stops showing ads that are offensive or inappropriate29Facebook, 2014.
When people hide ads in their News Feed, Facebook takes it as a signal that others might not want to see them, too, and show them to fewer people30Facebook, 2013.
Now, Facebook is also asking people why they hid the ads. If it’s because the ad is offensive or inappropriate, Facebook will stop showing the ad.
How may this affect your Page? If someone reported your ad to be offensive or inappropriate, you might see a significant fall in the reach of the ad.
August 25, 2014: Bounce rate
Facebook will be looking at bounce rate to determine if an article is using a clickbait headline31Facebook, 2014.
If someone clicks on an article and returns to Facebook immediately (or “bounce”), it might mean that they didn’t find what they were expecting. This is often because the article is using a clickbait headline. Facebook will be using this signal when ranking the article in the News Feed.
In addition, Facebook will also be monitoring if people are Liking, commenting on, or sharing the article after they click on it. If few people are, it’s likely that the article is not valuable, relevant, or meaningful. Facebook will then rank it lower in the News Feed.
Facebook will also be ranking posts with a link preview higher in the News Feed than posts with a link just in the caption — as the link preview shows more information about the article.
How may this affect your Page? Facebook found that posts with link preview “received twice as many clicks compared to links embedded in photo captions”. Experiment to see if that applies to the content you’re sharing.
June 23, 2014: Better videos
Facebook will now be able to understand (and rank) videos uploaded directly to Facebook better32Facebook, 2014.
For videos that are uploaded to Facebook directly, Facebook is now able to know whether someone has watched it and for how long. It seems that they are unable to do that for links to YouTube (or other video sites) videos.
Having this new information will allow Facebook to rank Facebook videos better. Early tests have shown that people are watching more videos that are relevant to them.
How may this affect your Page? Videos you upload directly to Facebook will likely perform better than links to videos on other sites such as YouTube. This was a mistake that we had been making for a while.
September 11, 2014: Like-baiting
Facebook will show fewer posts that explicitly ask for Likes, comments, or shares33Facebook, 2014.
Some Pages try to game the News Feed algorithm by explicitly asking for Likes, comments, and shares. Here’s an example:
As people have reported that such posts are less relevant than posts with a similar amount of engagement, Facebook will be ranking these posts lower in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? According to Facebook, “This update will not impact Pages that are genuinely trying to encourage discussion among their fans, and focuses initially on Pages that frequently post explicitly asking for Likes, Comments and Shares.”34Facebook, 2014
August 23, 2013: High-quality content
Facebook has developed a new algorithm to find and show high-quality content to users35Facebook, 2013.
To build the algorithm, Facebook surveyed thousands of people and put the results into a machine learning system. Here are some of the questions they asked:
Is this timely and relevant content?
Is this content from a source you would trust?
Would you share it with friends or recommend it to others?
Is the content genuinely interesting to you or is it trying to game News Feed distribution? (e.g. asking for people to like the content)
Would you call this a low quality post or meme?
Would you complain about seeing this content in your News Feed?
The algorithm also uses thousand other factors to determine if a post is a high-quality content. Some of these factors include “how frequently content from a certain Page that is reported as low quality (e.g. hiding a Page post), how complete the Page profile is, and whether the fan base for a particular Page overlaps with the fan base for other known high quality Pages”36Facebook, 2013.
How may this affect your Page? Pages that are seeing good engagement on their posts might see an increase in their reach. Here are some tips from Facebook37Facebook, 2013:
— Make your posts timely and relevant — Build credibility and trust with your audience — Ask yourself, “Would people share this with their friends or recommend it to others?” — Think about, “Would my audience want to see this in their News Feeds?”

Decoding the Facebook Algorithm: A Fully Up-to-Date List of the Algorithm Factors and Changes
If you do Facebook marketing, one thing that you might want to understand is the Facebook algorithm.
The Facebook algorithm helps make sense of the huge number of posts that people and businesses share every day and chooses the posts to show in our News Feed based on a huge number of factors.
We want to help you understand how your Facebook posts get viewed on Facebook. So we’re collecting all the relevant Facebook algorithm factors, updates, and changes and placing them here in this post for easy reference.

Facebook algorithm values
Understanding the Facebook algorithm starts with knowing the core values that Facebook uses to guide their thinking and work. These values can give you a hint of what content will do well or not so well on Facebook.
Here’s a brief summary of Facebook’s News Feed values:
Friends and family come first: The main objective of the News Feed is to connect people with their friends and family. So posts from friends and family are prioritized. After those posts, Facebook found that people want their feed to inform and entertain them.
A platform for all ideas: Facebook welcomes all ideas while making sure that everyone feels and is safe. They aim to deliver stories that each individual wants to see the most, based on their actions and feedback.
Authentic communications: Facebook prioritizes genuine stories over misleading, sensational, and spammy ones.
You control your experience: Individuals know themselves best. So Facebook creates features (such as unfollow and see first) to let people customize their Facebook experience.
Constant iteration: Facebook strives to constantly collect feedback and improve the platform.
The overview of the Facebook algorithm
So how does Facebook decide what to show in a News Feed?
Here’s a quick overview of how the Facebook News Feed works, according to Adam Mosseri, VP of Product Management for News Feed:
To make it easy for you to understand the Facebook algorithm, we went through all the (known) changes that Facebook has implemented to its algorithm and came up with a list of factors that we think may determine whether your post shows up or not.
Do this: The Facebook algorithm loves …
Posts with lots of Likes, comments, and shares
Posts that receive a high volume of Likes, comments, or shares in a short time
Posts that are Liked, commented on, or shared by one’s friends
Link posts
Post types that one interacts with often
Post types that users seem to prefer more than others (e.g., photo, video, or status update)
Videos uploaded to Facebook that receive a large number of views or extended viewing duration
Posts that are timely or reference a trending topic
Posts from Pages that one interacts with often
Posts from Pages with complete profile information
Posts from Pages where the fan base overlaps with the fan base of other known high-quality pages

August 28, 2017: Pages that repeatedly share false news
Facebook will be blocking Pages that share false news from buying ads on Facebook1Facebook, 2017. 
Facebook found that some Pages had been using Facebook ads to build their following and share false news more widely. To prevent the spread of false news on Facebook, Pages that repeatedly share false news will no longer be allowed to buy Facebook ads (until they stop sharing such news).
The false news will be identified by third-party fact-checkers.
How may this affect your Page? If you share false news on your Page (perhaps unintentionally), you might be blocked from buying ads. It’s great to always check the validity of content before sharing it.
August 17, 2017: Video clickbait
Facebook will be demoting Facebook posts that pretend to be a video2Facebook, 2017.
Spammers have been tricking people to click on Facebook posts that look like a video but aren’t. These deceptive posts are often videos with just a static image or they feature a false video play button when it’s actually a link.

How may this affect your Page? Facebook warned that Pages that rely on such practices will see a significant fall in reach while most other Pages won’t be affected much4Facebook, 2017.
August 2, 2017: Webpage load time
Facebook will be showing fewer stories with links that might take a long time to load5Facebook, 2017.
It’s frustrating when a website takes a long time to load. Facebook found that “As many as 40 percent of website visitors abandon a site after three seconds of delay.”
Hence, Facebook is rolling out an update to show more posts with links that load quickly and fewer posts with links that might load slowly, in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? If your websites are particularly slow on mobile, you might see a fall in referral traffic from Facebook. Here are some tools and tips for improving your mobile site performance.
May 17, 2017: Clickbait headlines
Facebook is rolling out an update to show fewer posts with clickbait headlines6Facebook, 2017.
In its continued effort to make Facebook an informed community, Facebook is reducing the number of clickbait stories in the News Feed. This includes posts with headlines that withhold or exaggerate information, such as the following:
“When She Looked Under Her Couch Cushions And Saw THIS…”
“WOW! Ginger tea is the secret to everlasting youth. You’ve GOT to see this!”
Posts that link to articles with such headlines will rank lower in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? If you depend on such headlines to get a wide reach on Facebook, you will see a fall in your reach. The good news is that once you stop posting such clickbait stories, your Facebook posts will stop being affected by this change.
May 10, 2017: Low-quality webpage experience
Facebook is rolling out an update to show fewer posts and ads that link to websites with low-quality experience7Facebook, 2017.
To help build an informed community on Facebook, Facebook will be showing fewer posts that are “misleading, sensational and spammy”. Specifically, they are referring to websites with low-quality experiences, such as the following:
Websites that contain little substantive content
Websites that have a large number of disruptive, shocking, or malicious ads
Posts that link to such websites will rank lower in the News Feed and might not be allowed to be used as Facebook ads.
How may this affect your Page? You might experience a small increase in traffic if you do not share such content. Otherwise, you’ll likely see a fall in your reach and referral traffic.
January 31, 2017: Authentic and timely stories
Facebook is making two changes to help authentic and timely stories rank better8Facebook, 2017.
To surface authentic content, Facebook will be analyzing Facebook Pages to see if they have been posting spam or trying to game the News Feed by asking for Likes, comments, or shares. If Facebook finds that a Page’s posts might not be authentic, such as people are often hiding those posts, Facebook will rank those posts lower in the News Feed.
To show people stories at the right time, Facebook will now study how people interact with posts in real time. For example, if there’s an important soccer game going on and many people are talking about it on Facebook, Facebook will show relevant posts higher in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? Some Pages might see a tiny increase in their referral traffic. Consider posting timely, relevant posts to get more reach on Facebook.
January 26, 2017: Video completion
Facebook is going to show long videos that people spend time watching to even more people9Facebook, 2017. 
When ranking videos in the News Feed, a factor that Facebook considers is “percent completion” — the percentage of the video you watched.
Facebook now recognize that it takes more commitment to complete a long video than a short one. So it will now put more weight on the “percent completion” factor for longer videos.
As an example, if people are, on average, watching 50% of a 30-second video and 50% of a 10-minute video, the 10-minute video will rank better in the News Feed than the 30-second video. That’s because the 10-minute video has to be more engaging than the 30-second video to keep people watching for five minutes (vs 15 seconds).
How may this affect your Page? If you create long, engaging videos, you might see an increase in your videos’ reach. Short videos, as a result, might see a fall in reach.
August 11, 2016: Personally informative stories
Facebook will be showing you more stories that are personally informative to you10Facebook, 2016. 
From its Feed Quality Program, Facebook found that people enjoy stories that are informative to them. Using the patterns that they learned from the program, Facebook will try to identify stories that are informative — usually, if they are related to people’s interests, if they engage people in broader discussions, and if they contain news relevant to them.
Facebook will then combine this new signal with signals of how relevant the story might be to each individual, to predict if they might like it.
How may this affect your Page? Informative content might get more reach on Facebook. From our recent experience, educational and entertaining content performs really well on Facebook.
June 29, 2016: Stories from friends
Facebook will be showing stories from close friends higher up in the News Feed11Facebook, 2016. 
Despite the previous update, people are still worried about missing important updates from their close friends. So Facebook is tweaking the News Feed algorithm again to rank posts from close friends higher up in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? You’ll likely see a fall in your Facebook reach and referral traffic as posts from friends will rank better than posts from Pages. Facebook recommends posting content that your audience are likely to share with their friends12Facebook, 2016.
April 21, 2016: Time spent viewing
Facebook will be ranking articles that it thinks you will spend time reading, higher in the News Feed13Facebook, 2016. 
Facebook learned that the amount of time someone spent reading or watching the content of an article indicates how interesting the article was to them. So Facebook is adding a new ranking factor — how long someone might spend looking at the article.
To keep things fair between short and long articles, Facebook will be looking at the time spent within a threshold.
A smaller change within this update is that Facebook will be showing fewer posts from the same Page together in the News Feed. That’s because people find that repetitive and prefers content from a diverse range of Pages.
How may this affect your Page? There shouldn’t be any significant changes to your Page reach. That said, this reinforces the importance of creating engaging content.
March 1, 2016: Facebook Live
Facebook is more likely to rank Facebook Live videos higher in the News Feed when those videos are live than when they are no longer live14Facebook, 2016.
Facebook found that “People spend more than 3x more time watching a Facebook Live video on average compared to a video that’s no longer live.”15Facebook, 2016 That’s because those videos are more interesting when the event being filmed is happening live than after the event.
How may this affect your Page? You might see that your live videos perform better than your other Facebook videos in terms of reach and engagement. Experiment with Facebook Live videos and see if they work better for you.
February 24, 2016: Facebook Reactions
Facebook recently rolled out Reactions — their supercharged ‘Like’ button — to help businesses better understand how people are responding to their content16Facebook, 2016.
For a start, when someone uses a Reaction, Facebook will infer they want to see more of that type of post, just like when they Like a post. But this could change17Facebook, 2016.
In the beginning, it won’t matter if someone likes, “wows” or “sads” a post — we will initially use any Reaction similar to a Like to infer that you want to see more of that type of content. Over time we hope to learn how the different Reactions should be weighted differently by News Feed to do a better job of showing everyone the stories they most want to see.
How may this affect your Page? You will get a better sense of how people are reacting to your Facebook posts with the data in your Facebook Page Insights. If you’re interested in learning more about Facebook Reactions, you can find more information here.
December 4, 2015: Surveys
Facebook surveys thousands of people every day to improve the News Feed ranking18Facebook, 2015.
Besides looking at quantitative signals such as Likes, comments, and shares, Facebook also surveys thousands of people every day to understand whether the News Feed algorithm is showing people the posts they want to see.
Here’s an example of the survey:
If a popular post isn’t something that the people surveyed want to see, Facebook will rank that post lower in the future.
How may this affect your Page? This shouldn’t have a significant impact on your Page’s reach as viral posts are usually anomalies. But I believe it’s good to know that Facebook does not only look at Likes, comments, and shares when ranking your posts but also whether people actually want to see those posts. Relevance is key here.
July 9, 2015: Greater user control over the News Feed
Facebook is making it easier for people to adjust and customize their News Feed settings19Facebook, 2015. 
The preferences tab will be more visible and more intuitive, allowing people to find Pages and people to like and follow, and easily selecting to follow/unfollow certain content.
June 29, 2015: Actions on Videos
Facebook now considers more actions on videos while ranking videos in the News Feed20Facebook, 2015.
Facebook found that many people don’t feel inclined to Like, comment on, or share a video even when they enjoyed the video.
So besides considering whether someone watched the video and for how long, Facebook is now taking into account of more actions such as choosing to turn on the sound, watching the video in full screen, and enabling high definition. These actions indicate that they enjoyed the video.
How may this affect your Page? If your followers like the videos that you post, this update will help them see your videos more often in their News Feed.
June 12, 2015: Time spent on stories
How much time you spend viewing stories becomes a factor that Facebook uses to determine what to show at the top of your News Feed21Facebook, 2015.
While many people might not Like, comment on, or share a post that they found meaningful, they would likely spend more time on it than other posts. Hence, Facebook is taking this as a signal for ranking Facebook posts.
By understanding what types of content someone prefers, Facebook can surface similar types of content higher up in their News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? Facebook does not expect Pages to see significant changes in terms of reach. But if you want to improve your Facebook reach, making your content engaging could help.
April 21, 2015: Content from friends and Pages
Facebook is rolling out three updates to improve the experience of the News Feed22Facebook, 2015.
The first is for people who do not have much content to see — maybe because they don’t follow many people or Pages. Facebook used to have a rule that prevents people from seeing multiples stories from the same source in succession. They are now relaxing the rule so that if you reach the end of your News Feed but still want to see more stories, you’ll see more.
The second is to show posts from friends you care about, higher in your News Feed so that you are less likely to miss them. If you read and interact with posts from Pages, you’ll still see them on your News Feed.
The third is to reduce or remove stories about friends liking or commenting on a post, such as this:
How may this affect your Page? You’ll likely see a fall in reach as posts from friends will be prioritized before posts from Pages.
March 5, 2015: Facebook Likes
Facebook to update the way Page likes are counted, removing the likes of memorialized accounts and deactivated accounts23Facebook, 2015.
How may this affect your Page? It’s possible that you might see a small decline in the overall Likes for your Page once this update occurs.
January 20, 2015: Facebook targets hoaxes
Facebook aims to reduce the number of hoaxes in News Feed with algorithm tweak24Facebook, 2015.
To reduce the number of posts containing misleading or false news, Facebook has announced that the News Feed algorithm will begin to factor in when many people flag a post as false or choose to delete posts.
Facebook will reduce the reach of such posts and add a warning on the post (without reviewing or removing the post).
How may this affect your Page? Facebook found “from testing that people tend not to report satirical content intended to be humorous, or content that is clearly labeled as satire. This type of content should not be affected by this update.”25Facebook, 2015 Only Pages that often post hoaxes and false news will be affected.
January 7, 2015: Video is growing
Facebook has provided some new stats and tips on using video, including these:
In just one year, the number of video posts per person has increased 75 percent globally and 94 percent in the US.
The amount of video from people and brands in the News Feed has increased 3.6x year-over-year.
Since June 2014, Facebook has averaged more than 1 billion video views every day.
On average, more than 50 percent of people who come to Facebook every day in the US watch at least one video daily.
Seventy-six percent of people in the US who use Facebook say they tend to discover the videos they watch on Facebook.
How may this affect your Page? Facebook could be favoring video posts. Experiment with Facebook videos and see if they perform better than other post types.
November 14, 2014: Overly promotional Page posts
Facebook is rolling out an update to reduce the number of overly promotional posts in the News Feed26Facebook, 2014.
Facebook heard from people that they want less promotional content on their News Feed and more stories from friends and Pages they like.
After digging into their data, Facebook found that these are the types of posts that people find too promotional:
Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app
Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context
Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads
Here’s an example:
How may this affect your Page? Pages that often post such content will see a significant fall in their reach over time. To grow your reach, Facebook recommends posting relevant and high-quality content27Facebook, 2014.
September 18, 2014: When people Like and comment
Facebook will be looking at when people are Liking, commenting, and sharing28Facebook, 2014.
Facebook used to only look at the total number of Likes on a post when ranking it in the News Feed. Now, Facebook will also look at the rate at which people are Liking, commenting on, and sharing a post.
If people are engaging with the post right after it is posted, and not as much a few hours later, this suggests that the post was most interesting at the time it was posted, but potentially less interesting at a later date. Based on this signal it is more likely to appear higher in News Feed earlier on and lower at a later date.
How may this affect your Page? The reach of your posts isn’t just determined by the number of Likes they get but also by the rate at which people are interacting with it. Posts that consistently receive a good amount of engagement will be shown to more people on Facebook.
September 11, 2014: Offensive or inappropriate ads
Facebook stops showing ads that are offensive or inappropriate29Facebook, 2014.
When people hide ads in their News Feed, Facebook takes it as a signal that others might not want to see them, too, and show them to fewer people30Facebook, 2013.
Now, Facebook is also asking people why they hid the ads. If it’s because the ad is offensive or inappropriate, Facebook will stop showing the ad.
How may this affect your Page? If someone reported your ad to be offensive or inappropriate, you might see a significant fall in the reach of the ad.
August 25, 2014: Bounce rate
Facebook will be looking at bounce rate to determine if an article is using a clickbait headline31Facebook, 2014.
If someone clicks on an article and returns to Facebook immediately (or “bounce”), it might mean that they didn’t find what they were expecting. This is often because the article is using a clickbait headline. Facebook will be using this signal when ranking the article in the News Feed.
In addition, Facebook will also be monitoring if people are Liking, commenting on, or sharing the article after they click on it. If few people are, it’s likely that the article is not valuable, relevant, or meaningful. Facebook will then rank it lower in the News Feed.
Facebook will also be ranking posts with a link preview higher in the News Feed than posts with a link just in the caption — as the link preview shows more information about the article.
How may this affect your Page? Facebook found that posts with link preview “received twice as many clicks compared to links embedded in photo captions”. Experiment to see if that applies to the content you’re sharing.
June 23, 2014: Better videos
Facebook will now be able to understand (and rank) videos uploaded directly to Facebook better32Facebook, 2014.
For videos that are uploaded to Facebook directly, Facebook is now able to know whether someone has watched it and for how long. It seems that they are unable to do that for links to YouTube (or other video sites) videos.
Having this new information will allow Facebook to rank Facebook videos better. Early tests have shown that people are watching more videos that are relevant to them.
How may this affect your Page? Videos you upload directly to Facebook will likely perform better than links to videos on other sites such as YouTube. This was a mistake that we had been making for a while.
September 11, 2014: Like-baiting
Facebook will show fewer posts that explicitly ask for Likes, comments, or shares33Facebook, 2014.
Some Pages try to game the News Feed algorithm by explicitly asking for Likes, comments, and shares. Here’s an example:
As people have reported that such posts are less relevant than posts with a similar amount of engagement, Facebook will be ranking these posts lower in the News Feed.
How may this affect your Page? According to Facebook, “This update will not impact Pages that are genuinely trying to encourage discussion among their fans, and focuses initially on Pages that frequently post explicitly asking for Likes, Comments and Shares.”34Facebook, 2014
August 23, 2013: High-quality content
Facebook has developed a new algorithm to find and show high-quality content to users35Facebook, 2013.
To build the algorithm, Facebook surveyed thousands of people and put the results into a machine learning system. Here are some of the questions they asked:
Is this timely and relevant content?
Is this content from a source you would trust?
Would you share it with friends or recommend it to others?
Is the content genuinely interesting to you or is it trying to game News Feed distribution? (e.g. asking for people to like the content)
Would you call this a low quality post or meme?
Would you complain about seeing this content in your News Feed?
The algorithm also uses thousand other factors to determine if a post is a high-quality content. Some of these factors include “how frequently content from a certain Page that is reported as low quality (e.g. hiding a Page post), how complete the Page profile is, and whether the fan base for a particular Page overlaps with the fan base for other known high quality Pages”36Facebook, 2013.
How may this affect your Page? Pages that are seeing good engagement on their posts might see an increase in their reach. Here are some tips from Facebook37Facebook, 2013:
— Make your posts timely and relevant — Build credibility and trust with your audience — Ask yourself, “Would people share this with their friends or recommend it to others?” — Think about, “Would my audience want to see this in their News Feeds?”
