If you are a writer, reading becomes all the more crucial to your very existence. Books aren't just a world that we can lose ourselves into. They are the crux of a person's entire lifetime of experiences. To write 'Oliver Twist', Dickens had to have studied the underbelly of Victorian era London. He would have seen how orphanages function under that facade of charity. More than that, he would have had to wrack his brains to form the structure of the story and the characters. Every good book is the result of decades of toil. And it has been handed to you for free (at least the classics).
