press clippings!
october 2010
autumn marches on.
october contained two interesting events for my own worst enemy. first, at the cantab, we returned for a one night only show as the 'classic lineup' with john cahill on drums. we featured mostly the songs off no guarantees and it rocked!
second, we headed back to the beloved verdant studio in athens, vermont for first of many sessions, again with pete weiss at the helm. it's as good a time as any to start working on a new record, ain't it?
here's a nice pic of verdant, where the magic happens...
january 2010
two great ways to start off the new year...first, we sold out the lizard lounge on saturday night (opening for mars' cd release) and second, michelle from www.bostongroupienews.com posted a great pic from the show on their website...thank you lizard, mars, michelle & the folks at bgn for all the support!
november 2009
very nice to find some kind words in this month's NOISE magazine from one of the legends of the boston music scene, the one and only liz borden...
september 2009
kind of a cool very thing here, sue was selected as "miss september" for the club bohemia calendar; all the credit goes to mickey bliss for the photo, calendar design, and for having impeccable taste in subject matter. check it out...
january 2009
can you believe we have been playing music together for 11 years?
2008 was capped off with an invitation to perform at the weisstronaut's 10th annual holiday bash at church, and it's fair to say that a very good time was had by all. mowe contributed one holiday original, "all i want for christmas (is a shot and a beer)" and took a stab at several rockin' holiday classics: john lennon's 'happy chrsitmas (war is over)', the pretenders '2000 miles', joni mitchell's 'river', the dogmatics 'christmastime' and last but not least, 'do they know it's christmas' by band-aid! extra-special thank yous go out to our guest vocalists (you know who you are...)
and in case you're wondering, my own worst enemy's christmas wish CAME TRUE: nbc network has officially cancelled that awful tv show that stole our band name.
august 2008
well it's never a right time for some shameless self-promotion, so here we go....total action has garnered a couple great reviews in recent local and national press. on our press page, check out what north carolina's indie-music.com and somerville's northeast performer has to say.
for those not so much into reading, you can hear it for yourself on itunes or at any newbury comics, where total action is only 10 bucks. or cut out the middleman and get a copy at one of our upcominig shows: friday sept. 19th at the castle bar (with the prime movers and the in out), or saturday oct. 11th at the cantab (with red invasion, mars and the lyres). details are on our shows page.

September 1993 calendar listings flyer for Cambridge, MA rock club The Middle East.
“Here’s the correct Middle East schedule for the month”—but without the year. Good thing one of the shows listed here was the WMBR Breakfast of Champions 10th Anniversary show with Helium, Versus and Fuzzy. Great gig, and yes, I was there. I even have a blank tape labeled as if it were a recording of that show, but for some reason it’s another show (Magic Hour) instead.
Also of note: Velocity Girl and Tsunami on the 30th. I may not have gone to that one, though, as by this point I’d seen both bands times many, many times. The fact that is was scheduled for the downstairs room definitely indicated they were a big draw by then, too.
Funniest intro goes to the Mecca Normal show on the 22nd: “WZBC presents Special Date Night.” Uh, yes, many Mecca Normal songs are about relationships...

TODAY IS THE DAY! I Can Spin A Rainbow, my first original album in over four years is OUT NOW !!
i co-wrote this record with my songwriting hero edward ka-spel (from The Legendary Pink Dots) and we are beyond excited to share it with you....head over to the official project page for everything album, download, vinyl, stories, pictures, videos, tour dates and lyrics:
http://amandapalmer.net/icanspinarainbow
i just wrote an epic 5,700+ word blog about the entire project, including tons of pictures from the studio and feelings about the process. (there were lots of feelings). here's an excerpt.....
the first exciting encounter i had with the web was getting an AOL account - but i had nobody to write to. the only other people i knew with email accounts were my goddamn parents. somehow - and i forget how - i found the pink dots bulletin board system, and coincidentally it was run by a guy from boston, alan ezust. there was a little community of people who loved the pink dots right in my home city: alan, jon whitney, who also ran the proto-band-loving website brainwashed.com, and sandy charron, a DJ at the freeform college radio station WZBC. they became my first friends-through-the-internet, and since we shared a love of the dots, our friendship deepened at shows and events, and soon we were all hanging out in real life. it was that posse that welcomed me over to alan’s house, where i actually got to “meet the band”. i wrote at length about that night in The Art of Asking (go read it), but suffice it to say, it was a life-changing one. edward listened to my first demo tape (at this point, less than twenty human beings had actually heard ANY of my songwriting - and the idea of ANYone, much less my hero, listening to my songs made me paralytic)….and he privately encouraged me to keep writing and recording. it was like getting permission from god to be a real artist. i floated on a cloud for a few weeks after that moment. i was real.
when i found out through the grapevine that the pink dots were coming through boston and needed a “place to crash” when i was about 19, i asked my parents if we could volunteer our house. they said yes (forever grateful, folks) and my first karmic contribution to the great rainbow-circle of couchsurfing was cast. jason stayed the night, we made the band eggs, my life was basically complete.
a few years later, i was studying in germany and went to see the band on tour in cologne. since i spoke fluent german, they asked if i wanted to hop in the van for a few shows and help sell CDs to the german fans. it was like being asked to run off with the circus. i ditched my university responsibilities and Got In The Van. experiencing lo-budget van touring (I LOVED IT) changed my life, and when i look back, it was the first time i really got a taste of what it meant to travel from town to town, doing the business of making music for people. i was also an epic drunk in those days...but i’ll save most of those harrowing stories for a later book. suffice it to say i humiliated myself by drunkenly shoplifting my own bands merch, a move that i carried like a shackle of extreme shame for years until i finally begged edward’s forgiveness about fifteen years after the fact. he forgave me. poor drunk amanda.
it was hamburg where we played the first night together, and can’t describe to you how fucking artistically explosive that night was for me, and for brian. i got made-up and ready early, i watched the band play their entire set, with those sparks in my heart just as strong as when i stood at edward’s feet when i was 15, and then we took stage ourselves, riding on the flame that they had lit. i still rank that show as one of the best the dresden dolls have ever played. we were on FIRE that night, lit by the fuse of history and inspiration.
and i think it was on that tour that edward and i had The First Conversation. could we make a Thing together someday? a recording of some kind, co-write music? he said yes, and i floated on a cloud for another few weeks…thinking that everything in my life really had come full circle.
some people probably fantasized about working with brian eno or bowie - i fantasized about working with my own heroes. this guy.
....
you can read the rest of the story on the project page. xx

Front and back of program schedule flyer for The Record Hospital on Harvard radio station WHRB, fall 1994.
There’s no season or year info on this flyer, but I’m fairly certain it represents the Record Hospital fall 1994 lineup. There I am on Tuesdays, from 9 to 11pm. And there’s my pal Carl right after me from 11pm to 1am.
And hey, it’s 2021 and both Carl and I are still doing radio! My show is Wednesdays from 6 to 7pm on KHUH in Seattle, and Carl’s show is Tuesdays from 5 to 7pm on WZBC in Boston.

Summary: This week we feature the voice of Palestinian historian Joseph Massad who spoke at Harvard University during Anti-apartheid Week as part of a series of events sponsored by the Harvard Palestine Solidarity Committee. Joseph Massad is Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University.
This talk was followed by a robust Q&A session, from which we shall hear one exchange. It is from a student concerned that should the walls come down in Israel, and 5 to 6 million Palestinian refugees return to inhabit historic Palestine and should Fatah and/or Hamas come to power, what would happen to the Jewish population? We conclude with that question and its answer.
Credits:
Notes: This Week In Palestine (a weekly part of Truth and Justice Radio) is an award-winning three-quarter-hour segment of news from Palestine and discussion of issues relevant to the Palestinians' struggle for freedom from Israel's brutal military occupation and colonization of their homeland. It speaks from the point of view of Palestinians and those who care about them. It's a regular part of Truth and Justice Radio, aired Sundays 6-10am ET on WZBC 90.3FM, Newton, MA, streaming live and archived for two weeks at wzbc.org; TJR's website, truthandjusticeradio.org, has a link to This Week In Palestine archives back thru 1-6-2008; editions are also accessible at radio4all.net or by navigating through our playlists. (At this important time, TJR has been airing Palestine coverage IN ADDITION to that provided by This Week In Palestine.) We hope you'll write to us at

The Foreign Resort previews 'She Is Lost' Single
Danish post-punk trio The Foreign Resort release their new single 'She is Lost' on April 19. This is the first song from the band’s next full length album, marking a return to the analogue sound of their 'New Frontiers' album, only this time the sound is more minimalistic and with plenty of electronics and spacious drums to create a dreamy yet upbeat soundscape full of contrast. The release is timed with a 10-day Canadian tour and a performance in Toronto at the prestigious Canadian Music Week.
For lead singer Mikkel B. Jakobsen 'She is Lost' is a very personal song about what he sarcastically refers to as “the summer of love”: “It was one of the worst summers in my life. I came out strong on the other side, but this song was written partly when things were looking very bad and I was not doing the right things to get to a better place and partly when I had realized it was not just me who was the problem. Hence the title 'She is Lost'.”
The band has also contributed the track 'Skyline/Decay' to 'Alternative F̷acts: A Shoegaze Resistance Compilation'. Curated by DKFM Shoegaze Radio, this involves shoegaze and dream pop artists in opposition to tyranny, and in support of civil liberties and women's health. All proceeds from this compilation shall be split evenly between American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood.
The Foreign Resort are Denmark's finest musical export of post-punk and dark new wave, led by singer and songwriter Mikkel Borbjerg Jakobsen. The band combines the shadowy mysticism of The Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem. Intricate reverb-enveloped guitar lines glide over Steffan Petersen’s motorik bass and Morten Hansen’s powerful drumming, all while Mikkel’s taut and sincere vocal delivery demands your attention.
Having toured with The Raveonettes, A Place to Bury Strangers and Swervedriver, The Foreign Resort has also shared bills with bands like DIIV, The Soft Moon, The KVB, Slowdive, Minor Victories and, most recently, Cold Cave. They've also toured the USA relentlessly, addicted to the allure of America's lost highways. Since 2010, the band has been rigorous in playing more than 400 shows across North America and Europe with performances at several festivals incl. SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Wave Gotik Treffen in Germany and now also Canadian Music Week 2017.
The band's latest release 'The American Dream' was dubbed “post punk par excellence” by Deep Ground, with Slug Magazine saying this is “an EP that possesses a singular fault: It is not long enough”. The Foreign Resort’s 2014 album “New Frontiers” ranked among the year's top albums at radio stations like WZBC Boston and KDHX St. Louis as well as numerous European and American blogs. With several music videos to their credit, there is no video for the new single 'She is Lost' yet, motivating the band to crowdsource their new video.
