Xenia Rubinos - “Don’t Put Me In Red” (2021)

Xenia Rubinos is a Puerto Rican/Cuban musical artist based in New York.

“Don’t Put Me In Red” is the artist’s response to the many lighting designers she worked with, who always chose the color red for her sets. The color red is often stereotypically associated with Latinas and she felt it minimized her work and identity. She would start going up to each lighting designer before her shows telling them to specifically not put her in red. 

Throughout the song, she is confronting the oppression of Latin people throughout history. She is taking back her identity and calling out racism, colonization, and prejudice - reminding the white oppressor that they are not the same. 

“Ask me where I’m going/ Don’t ask me where I’m from

I speak in 3 languages/ You barely speak in 1

Kids you put in cages/ Look like they could be my sons

You forget we were here/ When the West was won“

The video is shot in black-and-white, leaving it completely void of red or any color. Subtitles are also present throughout, sometimes cueing in the viewer to what the artist is feeling and thinking as she performs for us. These artistic choices are intentional, showing the true feeling and direct statement of the protagonist.

One of the best things about working at Urban Artifact (besides the unbelievable beer) is getting to meet and hear some of my favorite artists. I’ve had a music crush on Xenia Rubinos’ beats, composition, singing, and style since her first album came out a couple years ago (and this darling NPR Tiny Desk concert got recorded). I was thrilled to have her dance and sing her way into the hearts of the crowd at UA on June 22, 2017.

She came with her long-time collaborator Marco Buccelli on drums and Jackson Hill filling in the middle on bass, guitar, and synth. Here’s Jackson’s rig:
